Lab 5: Conservation of Energy: Physics NYA Section-460 Presented To Mr.W.Chaya

This lab report summarizes an experiment on the conservation of energy. The initial potential energy was converted to kinetic energy, with an average error of 17% likely due to external forces acting on the system. Calculations estimated these external forces averaged 0.0548 N. While energy was not perfectly conserved, the results support the conclusion that energy is conserved, within experimental error limits, when external influences are minimized.

Lab 5: Conservation of Energy

Analysis of data: 10) As one compares the final energy with initial energy, one can come to conclude that there is a range of error. The data collected is then calculated to in terms of percent error and is found to be on average 17%. Thus, the mechanical energy is relatively conserved within 83%, but certainly external forces were present throughout this laboratory experiment. This percent error is relatively reasonable considering another force was acting on the system, it is justified. Refer to sample calculations 11) The external forces which contributed to the discrepancy of the data collected and the result of energy initial and final was estimated on average to be 0.0548 N for each trial. Refer to sample calculations 12) Through this laboratory experiment it can be concluded, from hands on, that energy is truly conserved. The initial energy which was only potential was converted to kinetic energy, however, to a certain degree. The results were biased by 17% due to the fact that throughout this experiment, external forces were present. In this case, the final energy turned out to be more joules than the initial; this can be explained as the track was tilted slightly adding a force and causing the velocity to be greater. If this is experiment is reproduced with no external factors acting upon the system, it is eminent that the energy would have been fully conserved. This experiment is therefore reliable and valid to represent the conservation of energy.
