The key takeaways are Toyota's guiding principles, their green purchasing guidelines for suppliers, and some of the substances and standards mentioned in the guidelines like ISO 14001, LCA, IMDS, etc.

Toyota's seven guiding principles focus on being a good corporate citizen, respecting local cultures, providing clean products, developing new technologies, fostering teamwork and innovation, pursuing sustainable growth, and collaborating with partners.

The main guidelines for suppliers include acquiring ISO 14001 certification, managing substances of concern, reducing CO2 emissions, recycling and recovery rate management, responding to LCA assessments, and environmental initiatives related to their business activities.

Background of Toyota Guiding Principles

and Toyota Green Purchasing Guidelines 2007
Ever since the company was established in 1937, Toyota Motor Corporation, Japan or TMC have continuously
strived to contribute to the sustainable development of society through the manufacturing and provision of
high-quality and innovative products and services.
Though such continuous effort, Toyota Motor Asia Pacific Engineering & Manufacturing Co., Ltd. or TMAP-EM,
established in 2007, has adopted Toyota Motor Corporation, Japan or TMC management philosophy, values
and methods that have been passed down from generation to generation throughout the company and
summarized this management philosophy into what is known as the Toyota Guiding Principles which
originally issued in 1992, revised in 1997.

Toyota Guiding Principles

to be good corporate citizen of the world
2. Respect the culture and customs of every nation and contribute to economic and social development
through corporate activities in the communities

As you may see that Toyota Guiding Principles reflect its idea of what kind of company it would like to be.

Toyota Guiding Principles were created in the expectation that all Toyota Group Companies and business
partners would understand and share fundamental management principles and contribute to society by
referring to these principles.
Recently, as business operations become more global, societys expectation of a companys contribution
towards sustainable development has increased and the scope of such expectation has expanded. In response
to this, the Contribution towards Sustainable Development pamphlet was prepared in January 2005 to
explain Toyota Guiding Principles which has showed Toyotas expectation of firm and sustainable
development along with environment and society. Detail described in the next page.

1. Acquisition of ISO14001 Certification (Related to all Toyotas suppliers)
Toyota undertakes systematic management of environmental preservation activities and works to continuously
improve these activities. TMAP-EM requests that all suppliers also create the systems necessary to carry out
and continually improve environmental preservation activities. To do this, suppliers are requested to acquire
ISO14001 certification as describe below (If you have already obtained certification, then you are requested
to maintain that certification).

2. Management of Products and Materials Delivered to Toyota

In line with EU regulation, Toyota has promoted the elimination of using the four substances of concern
since middle of 2005. The implementation has covered to both CBU domestic and export models which
including suppliers parts, direct and indirect material as detail describe below:

2.1) Vehicle parts (including customized vehicle, accessories and raw material attached to

vehicle body such as touch up paint and engine oil)

2.1.1) Management of Substances of concern (SoC)

For the suppliers parts, to ensure the products supplied to Toyota do not contained any of

four substances, TMAP-EM has requested to supplier to submit the test report which be certified

by certified body. Moreover, suppliers have been asked for audits of management system for

substances of concern which are Lead (Pb), Mercury (Hg), Cadmium (Cd) and Hexavalent

Chromium (Cr6+) to ensure that their management of substances of concern is thorough.

Applicable suppliers have to conduct the audit based on the Check Sheet for SoC Management

and submit the results to TMAP-EM.

In addition, TMAP-EM will carry out the audits as needed to check the state of management
systems for the four substances of concern at suppliers. From the whole process must been
finished before operation begin and every supplier must input the data into IMDS to guarantee
their parts.
The SoCs banned regulation is mentioned in the Toyota Technical Standard TSZ0001G which
attached in the drawing. Therefore suppliers should early study and apply the regulation into
their productions.

2.1.2) Recycling/recovery rate management (IMDS)

To enable calculation of recycling/ recovery rate in the EU End of Life Vehicle (ELV), application

suppliers must submit the material data requested by TMAP-EM at the times specified.

2.1.3) Responses to Eco-VAS* (LCA*)

Toyota Motor Corporation introduced Eco-VAS, a comprehensive environmental impact

evaluation system for vehicle development in 2005, to reduce environmental impact. Lifecycle

assessment (LCA) methods are used to determine the environmental over a products lifecycle,

and suppliers that provide applicable parts and raw materials may be requested to submit

environmental data for the items indicated in the following.

For the purposes of LCA, we may confirm the change in environmental impact of any new
parts that are adopted or any parts whose design is modified with respect to earlier parts.

1. Fuel efficiency
4. Disposal recovery rate

2. Emissions
5. Substances of concern

3. Noise
6. Lifecycle environmental impact

2.2) Raw materials and supplementary materials used at plants

2.2.1) Management of Substances of Concern (SoC)

Toyota has been active proponent of voluntary measures to reduces and completely eliminate

usage of substances of concern which are Lead (Pb), Mercury (Hg), Cadmium (Cd), and

Hexavalent Chromium (Cr6+) at plant and in production process. Toyota prohibited substances

specified in the Toyota technical standards TSZ0001G, delivering by suppliers of raw materials

and supplementary material. When all suppliers use a new item, applicable suppliers must

submit Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), Chemical Composition Data (CCD) and other

documents required to indicate the results of their compliance audit for materials to be

delivery to Toyota related function as describe below:

3. Environmental Initiatives Related to Supplier Business Activities

In addition to ISO14001 acquisition, TMAP-EM has requested its suppliers to set ambitious targets and work
on various environmental improvement activities. Suppliers delivering parts, raw materials, and supplementary
materials should also take an active approach to environment initiatives as part of their business activities as
describe below:

3.1) Compliance with environmental laws and regulations

Supplier business activities must comply with all applicable environmental laws and regulations.
Document to submit to TMAP-EM and when to submit them
Suppliers do not need to submit compliance documents to TMAP-EM, but TMAP-EM will check on
compliance as needed.

3.2) Improving environmental performance

Suppliers must work on improving the following items of environmental performance in their business
activities:
Environmental Initiatives
1. Reduction of CO2 emissions
2. Reduction of VOC emissions (Volatile Organic Compound: VOC)* * In case of having relevant process
3. Reduction in the use of natural resources
4. Reduction of the volume of waste generated
Document to submit to TMAP-EM and when to submit them
Suppliers do not need to submit environmental improvement action plan to TMAP-EM,
but TMAP-EM will request and audit on the improvements, as needed.

3.3) Environmental and social distribution (Voluntary action)

Suppliers should have environmental and social activities for strengthen relationship to communities.
Document to submit to TMAP-EM and when to submit them
Suppliers do not need to submit documents to TMAP-EM, but TMAP-EM will periodically request
suppliers to send the report to TMAP-EM, as needed.

4. Reduction of CO2 Emissions and Usage of Packaging

and Wrapping Materials in Logistics

In transportation of goods accounted for energy which resulted in increasing Carbondioxide emission that
is the major cause of Global Warming. One of important environmental issue of transportation is usage of
packaging such as paper, plastic etc. This environmental issues continuous occurred and now being vital
problem of society.
As a result, Toyota undertakes active measures to reduce CO2 emissions which resulting from energy consumption
in logistics. Toyota is also working to reduce usage of packaging and wrapping materials. Suppliers involved
are also requested to implement environment measures in their own logistics activities. TMAP-EM take active
measures as follow:

4.1) Report of energy consumption to Toyotas related function as detail described below:
