Professional Development Philosophy - Professional Development at Weston Preparatory Academy should: Enhance the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and beliefs to create high levels of student learning Focus on the use of best practices to increase quality instructional strategies Be a continuous process linked to the goals of : School Improvement Grant (SIG) School Improvement Plan (SIP) Schoolwide Title I Plan Emphasize job-embedded professional learning that can be sustained over time Use data to assess needs, identify areas for improvement and evaluate the effectiveness of the professional learning on job performance and student growth Include teacher collaboration and reflection
Needs Assessment: Professional development needs are identified by the Core School Improvement Team. The team consists of lead teaches from each grade level team as well as key administrators. The team analyzes student achievement data to identify areas of challenge that could be improved through implementation of the professional learning process. In addition, information is gathered from the analysis of the teacher evaluation rubrics to further target specific needs of each educator. Finally, the analysis data is aligned with the goals of the School Improvement Grant, School Improvement Plan, and the Schoolwide Title I Plan. Survey data collected from PLC teams and individual teacher goal sheets provide further emphasis on targeted needs. As result of this needs assessment process, the following goals have been established: 1. Provide ongoing professional development and support to align the curriculum with Michigan Grade Level Content Expectations, to identify grade level by skill introduction, reinforcement, and mastery, and provide resources to support the curriculum in all core areas. The next step in the curriculum alignment process will be to align the curriculum with the Common Core Standards for College and Career readiness. 2. Provide ongoing professional development and support on identified research based programs in the curriculum areas identified as having the greatest need. 3. Provide ongoing, job embedded professional development through the use of coaches to mentor and assist staff in the use of data to drive their instruction as well as identification of content area best practices to improve their instructional practices. 4. Provide ongoing professional development in the use of technology to engage students as active learners. 5. Provide ongoing professional development in the use of positive behavior supports to decrease student disruptions and increase focused learning time. 6. Provide ongoing professional development, to effectively increase staff collaboration time.
