Previous experience
FEED and Detailed Design for pigging capability of two FPSOs off the Ivory Coast, Nov 11-Ongoing Lead engineer. A major oil producer required the design and installation of a system that would allow for operational and inspection pigging of two gas export lines from two FPSO vessels located off the Ivory Coast. The project involved a laser scan survey of the gas export systems, pipelines, topsides pipework and geometry of the turrets of the two FPSO vessels and the land terminal facility. The scan was needed as the drawings supplied by the operator did not reflect the 'as built' state of the plant and could not be relied upon for accuracy. This project also required me to become fully conversant with laser survey techniques and the associated software to interface the output files into a 3D CAD format that could be used in subsequent design work. The CAD models were critical to accurately determine and design the optimum sizes and locations of the new Pig Launcher/Receivers and associated valves and pipes. The successful conclusion of the FEED project resulted in the project team being awarded the detailed design work for the new installation. Project is ongoing with completion set for September 2012. Technical Due Diligence and Feasibility Analysis, Ocean Wave Energy Device - Dartmouth Wave Energy Ltd, 2011. Conducted a detailed technical analysis of an Ocean Wave energy conversion device for a private investment company, prior to a 1.5 Million capex. Identified; metocean data, hydrodynamic performance characteristics, systemic weaknesses of the design, DNV standards, hydraulic performance, corrosion characteristics, deployment issues, tribology of internal friction surfaces, fatigue analysis, filtration requirements and '100 year wave' survivability analysis. Concluded the analysis by deriving the required solutions and presenting the design team with a detailed plan to ensure project success. Technical Feasibility Analysis- Laser Doppler Flowmetry application for determining blood flow for medical devices, 2011. This project related to a design of device that was used to determine accurate values of blood velocity and oxygen content in human internal organs using non-invasive methods. The technical study into this project required a meta-analysis of peerreviewed scientific journals regarding Laser doppler flowmetry to determine the current scientific understanding behind this technology. Using this meta-analysis, a synergetic overview of the product was derived and used to determine if the product was viable for the specific medical application it was designed for. This project required liaison with senior medical scientists and a specialist design company to determine if the project could be delivered on budget and would be of practical use to the medical profession. Technical Feasibility Analysis- Additive Layer Manufacturing in Formula 1 and Aerospace. 2011. Project involved the scrutiny of a new metals manufacturing method using laser-sintering of titanium dust to produce solid geometric objects for engineering applications. The analysis required a study into the microscopic structure of metallic laser sintered components in order to determine if it satisfied the material characteristics required of Aerospace components for flight certification and for use in Formula One applications. This required close liaison with a Formula One chief designer and the head of R&D at a major defence and aerospace company. Technical Feasibility Analysis- Vertical Axis Wind Turbine Project 2011. The project was to assess a vertical axis wind turbine design using sailing technology that had vertical fabric sails which aligned automatically to present the most efficient drag-profile into the prevailing wind. The design was low speed, low noise and was intended to be deployed in military conflict zones and disaster relief areas prior to commercial roll out. The technical analysis included a calculation of the aerodynamic performance and a wind speed/power performance assessment to determine the economic viability of the device. Early adopters targeted were military and NGO groups. This required liaison with senior military officers in the MOD procurement supply chain to determine the deployment implications of this device in Afghanistan, primarily in forward operating bases where the environmental conditions would be extreme and the probability of damage was high.

Technical Feasibility Analysis- Ultraviolet Sterilisation of Pathogenic organisms- 2011 Conducted a meta-analysis of peer reviewed scientific papers that described studies into the use of UVC light in the 254nm wavelength in order to deactivate the DNA of pathogenic bacteria and viruses in food products, primarily milk and fruit juices, for human consumption. A review of all available scientific studies, into this technology, determined that there was a nascent health threat from a carcinogenic element (Furan) being synthesised in the foodstuffs during UVC exposure of fructose. This project involved liaison with the chief scientist at Dairy UK, Coca Cola and UK food testing laboratories. Head of Steam and Rotating Plant Group- Heysham 2, Nuclear Power Station- 2010 Head of engineering group responsible for the conventional plant at Heysham 2 Nuclear Power Station. Responsible for the 1.2 GW turbine-generator systems, feed, condensate, cooling water and decay heat systems. Significant projects included the recovery of a 660MW Parsons turbine-generator system that had failed due to an unwinding of coupling bolts caused by vibration, aerodynamic and electromagnetic interference. Royal Navy Engineering Officer- 2001-2010 Commissioned Engineering Officer in the Royal Navy engineering branch. graduate training programme 2001-2004. Attended the Royal Navy Marine Engineering

Served in Aircraft carriers, Destroyers, Frigates and Royal Marines landing craft on deployments in over 50 countries around the world. Responsible for the ships engineering plant and up to 100 technical staff. Also responsible for the operation of the ships propulsion and auxiliary marine engineering plant, including diesel generators, gas turbines, pumps, rotating shaftline & propellers, gearboxes, desalination systems, hydraulics, electrical distribution, refrigeration, air-conditioning and all marine ancillaries. Design and Manufacture of Two Axis Motion simulator. 2004-2007 Concurrently with RN career; designed a two-axis motion simulator that was capable of interpreting real-time telemetry from a computer game or a real-world vehicle via accelerometer feedback and deriving motion cues that would allow a human operator to get instant sensory feedback to gain greater control over the vehicle being operated. This was achieved by mimicking the acceleration forces by tilting the occupant about a central axis on a gimbals frame. Responsible for initiating the project and subsequent set up of a new company vehicle, securing 250K venture capital funding, recruiting an engineering/marketing team, designing, procuring and testing of all mechanical components and integration with the electronics and electrical systems. Technical Analysis Project- Propulsion System- 6Bn CVF Aircraft Carrier Project -2002. Headed the propulsion project assessment team for the CVF Aircraft Carrier project at MOD Abbeywood. The project was to assess if the proposed design of the propulsion system for the new 6Bn aircraft carrier was fit-for-purpose within a naval conflict environment. Two designs of aircraft carrier had been presented by two defence contractors bidding for the contract (Thales & BAe systems). The project required analysis of; hydrodynamics, shock loading, sea wave loading and the effect of a sub-surface weapon detonation in close proximity to the aircraft carrier hull and fatigue analysis of roller bearing contact faces. The analysis found that the propulsion system being proposed had significant weaknesses and was unsuitable for a military application. It was an Achilles heel in a mission-critical unit that could have resulted in a UK defeat in a major conflict. The two contractors modified their proposals on the basis of this analysis and resubmitted a modified design.
