Luc Can
Master of Business Administration (2000) In the late 1990s Luc Can took time away from his job as Deputy Director and Head of the Securities Department with the Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV), to gain formal management training with Monash University. His decision to return to study opened a world of opportunity. Returning home in 2001, Luc was promoted to Director of the International Banking Department at BIDV, a position he held until 2004, when he decided to return to Monash to undertake further postgraduate study. Since then his academic career has gone from strength to strength in 2003 Luc received the Australia-Asia Award to support him during his studies (one of only two Vietnamese students so far to have received this honour), and in 2007 he was awarded the prestigious Humphrey Fellowship (part of the US Fulbright Exchange Program), offered by the US Government through the Department of State. Luc has now returned to Vietnam to continue his career in banking and finance, and to further his experience in teaching and research.
Sindy Madrid
Master of Business Information Systems (2010) Working as a commercial CRM Manager, Sindy manages CRM solutions to profile customers in order to target offers, develop products, and allocate sales and resources. She also works with users to define business requirements and translate them into system design. After working in the Business Intelligence field for a while, I got to a point where I felt I needed a more solid theoretical background to complement my work experience, and complement my practical knowledge with a more integrated framework, Sindy says. Thats why I decided to look for a university program that offered units to support my work activities. I was granted the Chile Bicentennial Scholarship which allowed me to study in any university in Australia. I reviewed the Masters programs of all universities in the Business Information area. Monash was the one that offered the most attractive subjects and most relevant to what I needed to know at work.

After completing an undergraduate degree in computer science, Ashwin manoharan decided to continue his studies in a masters program. Originally from India, Ashwin says one of the main reasons he selected Monash was its reputation. Monash University is well known around the world and I heard about its high standard of education, he said. The amazing feature about this course is its flexibility. I was initially thinking of specialising in one field and ended up specialising in two fields, network computing and network security. As a Monash graduate with two specialisations, I believe this will be a great assistance to gain eventual employment.

Research excellence
Our researchers are continually recognised in competitive grant rounds of organisations such as the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), the Australian Research Council (ARC) and the Cancer Council and the National Heart Foundation. We win a significant proportion of awards for research, reflecting our strengths in areas such as neuroscience, foetal development, malaria and communication impairment. Our people, programs, platforms and a new precinct for biomedical sciences research at Clayton, plus a prominent presence at The Alfred (Alfred Medical Research and Education Precinct), Monash Medical Centre (Monash Health Research Precinct), a network of clinical schools at hospitals across Victoria, and at our own campuses at Peninsula, Gippsland, Caulfield and Malaysia means that we are able to translate a high volume of research into clinical outcomes.

A team of Monash University researchers has made a major breakthrough in the international fight against malaria. They have provided a new approach to treating and controlling the disease that is contracted by half a billion people and causes around one million deaths a year, claiming the life of a child across the world every 30 seconds. The Monash University ARC Centre of Excellence in Structural and Functional Microbial Genomics has been able to deactivate the final stage of the malaria parasites digestive machinery, effectively starving the parasite of nutrients and disabling its survival mechanism, resulting in the death of the parasite. The teams successes have laid the scientific groundwork for the development of a specific class of drugs to treat the disease. Researchers used the Australian Synchrotron, located adjacent to Monash Universitys Clayton campus, in the process of their work. The results of the teams research have been published in the prestigious US journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Applicants must have successfully completed an undergraduate 21,000 degree at a recognised University. The AASW also requires applicants for social work courses to have completed undergraduate studies of the individual and society prior to their entry into a social work degree. The Monash Department of Social Work stipulates that prerequisite undergraduate studies must include the successful completion of two semesters in studies of the individual and two semesters in studies of society. Studies of the individual would include units in psychology, human development, genetics, personality, psychopathology, or studies of individual theorists in these areas. Studies of society include subjects like sociology, anthropology, philosophy, history, gender studies, politics, and multicultural studies. A test of relevance will be applied in the sense that these studies would need to be relevant to the practice of contemporary Social Work. The Department of Social Work would not, therefore, regard students who have (for example) only studied society via studies of the Renaissance in Florence as having appropriate prerequisites. Additionally, applicants must have completed some formal study in Indigenous studies. If the number of applicants exceeds the number of places available, past academic standing will be a factor in selection. Students require a bachelors degree in nursing or biological, medical, paramedical, agricultural or veterinary sciences, or equivalent qualifications or experience in the reproductive sciences gained after completing a pass degree in another field. (BSc should include a major field of study in: anatomy, biology, biochemistry, genetics, pharmacology, physiology, microbiology, immunology or zoology). 28,200

Research students completing a higher degree by research with the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences have the opportunity to work with world class researchers in the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Science (MIPS) or the Centre for Medicine Use and Safety (CMUS). MIPS is the largest and most experienced group of pharmaceutical scientists in Australia. In the recent Excellence in Research for Australia assessment, Monash scored top marks for its research in the fields of pharmacology and pharmaceutical sciences, and nanotechnology. These results are impressive news for the faculty and MIPS whose strategic focus is concentrated in these fields. Medicinal and biomolecular chemistry, another faculty focus, also scored highly at 4/5. CMUS looks at new models and systems of healthcare practice. It aims to make the use of medicines as safe and effective as possible. CMUS has two major research nodes one within the faculty and the other located in the Department of Pharmacy at The Alfred hospital. Researchers have excellent access to multidisciplinary research collaborators. They are in an ideal position to address issues around medicine use and safety across all sectors the home, the broader community, hospitals, residential aged care facilities and the interfaces between these sectors.
