BACK RUB / THERAPEUTIC BODY MASSAGE Concept: Purpose:

Preparation 1. Assist patients condition, any contraindications, and the needs. Set the room temperature at 75 F. Create a warm, quiet, and comfortable environment with no interruptions to promote maximum effect. 2. Gather all necessary materials: Linens Lotion Alcohol Massage oils Blankets Towels 3. Remove wrist watch. Perform hand hygiene (infection control). 4. Greet patient. Explain the procedure. Offer backrub or massage to patient. Close the door and curtain. Raise bed to the highest position and lower side rails closest to you. Provide low indirect lighting with background music. 5. Assist patient to prone position / lying on his back or it can be in a side-lying position with the back exposed from the shoulders to the sacral area. Loosen or remove patient clothing. Drape the client with a sheet or use a bath blanket to cover areas not being treated. 6. Warm lubricant or lotion in your palm or place container in warm water. Squeeze small amount of lotion in the palm of your hand to warm and rub hands gently together. 7. Exposed areas and begin applying lotion (oil) to the shoulders, back, and sacral area. 8. Using light gliding strokes (effleurage). Place your hands beside each other at the base of patient spine and stroke upward to shoulders and base of the neck then back downward to buttocks in slow continuous strokes. Continue for several minutes, (approximately 3 mins.). Apply additional lotion as necessary. 9. Massage patients shoulder, entire back, areas over

Strokes: Knead the patients skin by gently alternating grasping and compression motions (petrissage) using the fingertips/palms & wrist. Use friction particularly to the group of muscle in the back, shoulder, upper arm, where tension is being held. 11. To complete: massage with additional long firm stroke & in a rhythmic movement of the fingertips going downward. Repeat it 3-5 minutes. Some variations strokes such: closed palmic, etc. 12. Assess patients condition during massage: observe for any unusualties, i.e signs for reddened skin or open areas. Pay particular attention on skin over bony prominences. 13. Pat patient skin using dry towel and remove excess lotion. Apply powder (if patient requests it). 14. Perform hand hygiene. 15. Assess patients response and record your observations on patients chart.
