history of medford
linebackers and
medford sports hall of fame
medford linebackers:
in 1961, then superintendent of schools, dr. leonard b. mayfield and medford High
Principal les Harris, along with representatives of st. marys High school and approximately
20 business people were invited to the first meeting. bud Parsons was elected temporary
chairperson. Ground rules were discussed, and it was agreed that the purpose of the organi-
zation was to support and back the school districts admissions programs and policies, and
in no way attempt to interefere with such programs and policies.
The first meetings were held at 7 a.m. at norths chuck Wagon, but as interest grew and
attendance increased, meetings were scheduled at noon for lunch with that meeting time re-
maining today, 51 years later.
The high school coaches of the sport in season were the weekly guests of the lineback-
ers club. coaches discussed past and future games and usually illustrated their presentation
with films of the previous weeks game. Today medford linebackers still meet each Thursday
at noon in the board room of central High school to hear from the football coaches of north
and south medford, st. marys, and cascade christian High schools. current membership is
around 80 members.
The central purpose of the organization in the early days was to support the districts
athletic facilities needs. The focus on facilities still remains the number one priority for the
medford linebackers. The initial project of the linebackers club was to raise funds to build a
grandstand for the football games. That grandstand is what is known today as the West Grand
stands in spiegelberg stadium. other recent projects spearheaded by the linebackers in-
clude: installation of a new artificial playing surface called, field turf in spiegelburg stadium;
resurfacing of an all-weather, 6-lane track surface in spiegelburg stadium; installation of all-
weather track surfaces at both Hedrick and mclaughlin middle schools and lighting at bower-
man field at north medford High.
medford sPorTs Hall of fame:
in 1985 the city of medford celebrated its 100th birthday. one of the last big events of
the centennial year was the establishment of the medford sports Hall of fame, a befitting way
the city of medford felt to commemorate medfords rich sports history. Tommie smith, commu-
nity member and sports enthusiast, really was the visionary of the medford sports Hall of
fame and was the driving force behind the first Hall of fame induction in 1985.
after the centennial, the medford linebackers organization adopted the Hall of fame to
ensure that the rich and storied history of medford athletes, coaches, and contributors contin-
ues to be recognized and to find their rightful place in medford history. To date there have
been four inductions: 1985 -- 100 inductees; 1990 --- 20 inductees; 2007 --- 10 inductees; and
2012 -- 16 inductees, making a total of 146 in the medford sports Hall of fame.
The goal of the Hall of fame committee is to continue with inductions every five years.
