HOW TO STAY HEALTHY DURING THE HOLIDAYS

Tis the season for cold weather, warm fires, holiday parties and massive feasts with family and friends. With all the delicious food and merriment the holidays are one of the most difficult times to have and keep the motivation for maintaining a healthy lifestyle and regular workout plan. Lets face it, its tempting to stay inside and stuff your face with candy canes and mini chocolates. Celebrating and eating a little unhealthy is okay, but it is important to stay focused so you dont lose sight of your goals. Here are some tips to prevent that holiday bulge: Eat four to six meals instead of saving your hunger for that special holiday meal. To curb your appetite before a big meal, eat something water-based such as soups, fruits or vegetables to hold you over. Plan a workout before your holiday party or feast. Why not use those little delectable candies as a reward for that hard run you did on the treadmill earlier? You wont feel as guilty, plus your metabolism will be working harder after a good workout. When eating, slow down! Meals are not races. It takes at least 20 minutes for our brain to realize that we are full. Try a little bit of everything and remember that there is no rush. Offer to bring a healthy dish to holiday meals and parties. Chances are, the host will be happy to have some help and guests will be thankful for an alternative. Take advantage of the nutritionally dense holiday foods. Health enhancing foods such as cranberries, turkey, sweet potatoes and chestnuts can supply our bodies with nutrients when consumed in moderation. Try recipe modification. Making small changes to your dish can make it more nutritious and sometimes even tastier. If youre worried about a holiday cooking disaster, try it out before the big day. Beware of liquid calories, especially alcohol. Alcohol contains almost as many calories per gram as fat and tends to lower our inhibitions. Therefore, you are less likely to care how much you drink or eat. So instead of always reaching for that drink, switch to a non-alcoholic drink such as water or diet coke. Dont hang out by the buffet table when socializing at a party. Its too easy to get carried away in a conversation while munching on high-calorie snacks. Make an effort to position yourself away from the snack foods while at the party.

CORNERSTONE ENDOWMENT DINNER

The YMCA of the Capital Area hosted the Cornerstone Endowment Dinner for its donors on Tuesday, Oct. 23, at City Club Baton Rouge. The Y recognized various lifetime members and donors, presenting them with vases as a token of their appreciation. The purpose of the endowment fund is to save money and use the interest generated to better the Ys organization. The YMCA Cornerstone Endowment Fund began in 1998, when the Y realized how much these donors funds could help sustain the Y. In 2011, the Y had over $2.5 million in the Baton Rouge Area Foundation. As of today, the balance has grown to over $3 million. Josh Landry spoke on behalf of Gary Golden and told Goldens story of his experience at the YMCA Christian Values Conference. The conference offers the opportunity for teens to grow personally and spiritually. Golden was asked to spend a week at Blue Ridge Mountain and speak to the teenagers there. To his surprise, it was the hardest yet most rewarding week of his life. To read more, go to ymcabr.org/endowment.

NO PHONE SUPPORT ZONE

The YMCA kicked off the No Phone Support Zone campaign on Saturday, Nov. 10, at the C.B. Pennington, Jr. YMCA. At the event the Y encouraged parents to put away their cell phones for a while and actively participate in their childs youth sports and activities. In todays society, people are more attached to their cell phones than ever before. In 2011, American citizens sent over 1.5 trillion text messages and logged 5.3 billion minutes on Facebook in a single month, which is equal to 101,000 years. With all of the technological advances we have had, some people are becoming further detached from the things we value and deem important. By participating in the No Phone Support Zone, the Y believes both parents and children can have a more fun and wholesome experience during youth activities. To learn more, go to ymcabr.org/nophone.

Children who are 4-years-old currently enrolled in a Pre-Kindergarten program may also register for this program.

LEGENDS BALL
The Baranco-Clark YMCA hosted its first annual Legends Ball on Friday, Nov. 9, raising $8,000 toward YMCA programs and services. The proceeds from the ball will help individuals and families have an opportunity to utilize the Ys programs and services. The event honored special individuals that have impacted the community of Baton Rouge. The honorees included former LSU mens head basketball coach, Dale Brown, and former Baton Rouge chief of police, Jeff Leduff.

HEALTHY FAMILY HOME: MAKE FAMILY TIME A PRIORITY

If work and activity schedules are making family time or meals together impossible, first see if you can change or even eliminate any of your commitments. What could you streamline or drop to make more time together possible? If you cant shuffle things around, then how could you grab other chances to spend time or eat together? How about mornings or weekends?

We hope you have a safe and happy holiday! From all of us here at the Y

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: UPCOMING EVENTS COACH DENNIS BLUNT Breakfast with Santa
In late August, the Y needed one more coach for the 9-10 Fall Football League. One of the present coaches decided to ask someone he saw fit for the job, Dennis Blunt. Coach Blunt stepped up and volunteered to coach the team. Coach Blunt did an outstanding job with the 16 football players. By mid-season, they had come together as a successful football team. Most impressive was Coach Blunts ability to work with an autistic player on the team. Coach Blunt made sure that he and the rest of the team treated this player as an important part of the group like any other player on the team. He made sure that this player had as much playing time in the game as his teammates. The players mother was thrilled with Coach Blunt and how he handled her son. She was also extremely pleased with the YMCA of the Capital Area Flag Football Program. Coach Blunt has been a tremendous asset to the program and the Y is proud to have had him as one of our volunteer coaches, said Greg Wroblewski, Paula G. Manship Sports Director. Have breakfast with Santa on Dec. 8 from 9-10:30 a.m. at the Dow Westside YMCA Community Room.
