QUESTIONNAIRE ANALYSIS I am currently involved in making a music magazine that focuses on British music. My target audience are males aged 16-19 who are interested in British music. I would be very grateful if you could answer the following questions about British music and music magazines by selecting/ticking the answers that apply.

1. Are you 16 -19 years old?

YES / NO

All of my respondents answered yes to this question, so they were between the age range of 16 and 19

What British music artists/bands do you currently listen to?: Mumford and Sons, The Vaccines, 30 Seconds to Mars, Rizzle Kicks, The XX, Olly Murs, Example, Arctic Monkeys, One Direction and Ed Sheeran. These were the responses to question two.

What attracts you to British music? The lyrics of the songs The instruments and vocals used The artists/bands Other (specify below)

Four respondents said that they believe the lyrics of the song attract them to British music. Three respondents said that they believe that the instruments and vocals used in the music attract them to British music. Six respondents said that they preferred the artist or band that attracts them to British music. 3. How much would you pay for a music magazine? (Please circle) Nothing Less than 1 1-2 2-3 3-4 More than 4 There was a 50% change in the results. 50% of the respondents would pay between 1 and 2 whereas the other 50% would pay 2 to 3 for a music magazine. Therefore my magazine would be priced between 1 and 3.

4. Do you currently buy/read music magazines? YES (If yes, please go on to ANSWER question 5)
Two of my respondents said that they read music magazines. This means that more music magazines need to be targeted at the 16 -19 year old age range.

NO (If No please go on to answer question 7)

Eight respondents said that they do not read magazines. There is multiple reasons for this which is explained in question seven.

From the two respondents that answered question four as yes, the magazines that they read are NME and Kerrang. These two magazines have a different genre to each other, but are read by my respondents. 6. What do you like about this magazine?

From the two respondents that answered question four as YES said they liked the magazine because of the contents that is actually in the music magazines and they also like the bands that are published in the magazine.

Four respondents said that music magazines were not of their interest. However I believe that this could change if the magazine was targeted specifically at their likes and dislike (this will be asked in the focus group). Four respondents also said that they thought that the music magazines already out there were not aimed at people like them. This means through the research I gather through the target audience, I can gather more responses that suit the target age group. Three respondents said that the thought the music magazines were too expensive so they did not buy them. One respondent said they do not read any magazines of any genre.

One respondent said that they would be encouraged to buy a music magazine if there were competitions that the target audience could win for example concert tickets. Six respondents said they would be encouraged to buy a music magazine if they could read exclusive news and interviews with artists or bands. Three respondents said they would like dates of upcoming events and concerts in the music magazine so it would be an easier way to check whats going on in the music scene. Four respondents said they will be encouraged to buy a music magazine if the price of the music magazine was decreased so it was more affordable.

Four respondents said that they preferred magazine A, which features the main image of Christina Aguilera. The reasons behind this magazine front cover being chosen was that it was clear to read and attractive looking, there was light colours and that the main image of the artist is pretty. Four

respondents said they preferred magazine B mainly because of the artist on the front of the magazine. The masthead billboard can be seen against the neutral colours used on the rest of the magazine. Magazine B also has a striking pose that attracts to the target audience. The other two respondents said they preferred magazine D because the props used make it interesting and that it is simple but effective 10. Nine out of the ten respondents said that they believe that they strongly agree that there should be one main image on the front of the music magazine. 50% of the respondents said that they believe that several images on the front of the cover are not needed as much as just one main image. There was a mixed response about the musical instruments on the front cover of the magazine. More respondents were against the idea rather than for but two respondents thought that there should be musical instruments on the front cover of the magazine. All of the respondents said they would prefer brighter colours rather than darker colours on the front cover of the magazine as they are more visually appealing and attractive to the target audience. 11. What specific images/photographs are associated with British music that you would like to see on the front cover that would attract to you? For the respondents that answered this question they responded with that there should be pictures of artists of bands on the front cover that are visually appealing to the audience so that they will be willing to buy the music magazine. 12. There was a mix of different answers from the target audience on this question. This is because there is a difference in the respondents genres of music, and their likes and dislikes. A concert guide in a music magazine is liked depending on the type of respondent and if they go to concerts. Therefore this question would be good to ask in the focus group session. Again the information about British music is controversial to what the respondent is like as a person. However it was clear from this question that Latest News and fashion were the most agreed contents to see in a music magazine. This means that I should include this into my magazine.

It is clear that the main feature that the target audience is a combination of interviews and images of the band/artist that is being interviewed. This should therefore be the base of my double page spread. Posters were given mixed responses by the respondents because they were attractive to some of them but not to other. Therefore a main image on the one side of the page may be best when it comes to my own design.
