Gizelle asked Frank Peters some questions about his decision to hire Kerry: What influenced your decision to hire Kerry? Mainly the efforts of Gizelle, and to support our community. I have a brain injury so I can relate to the challenges of others! Have there been any challenges in hiring someone with different abilities? There are challenges when hiring any staff, as all staff have strengths and weaknesses. Trying to learn the employees challenges and working on customer service skills is part of it. What kind of skills does Kerry need to work at RMCF? A good attitude, a smile, independence and focus.

Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory in Harrison Hot Springs is one of our newest champion employers. Frank Peters & Marcy Howell, the owners, hired Kerry from the CSCLs Supported Employment Services last December. Kerry helps package all products for sale, welcomes customers by serving samples of fudge, and assists Frank & Marcy with anything else that needs to be done. You can always find Frank or Marcy making Fudge, Caramel apples, Rocky pop or Peanut brittle to name a few. There is always something to do at Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory!

Employer Appreciation
On December 1, 2009, the staff at the Supported Employment Program hosted an Employer Appreciation event at the Chillibowl Lanes. Invitations were sent out to 15 Champion Employers who have opened up their workplaces to individuals with developmental disabilities.

The purpose of this event was to honour organizations for their outstanding policies and practices in hiring and employing people with developmental disabilities.
Employers who report satisfaction with S.E.P. services: 75% of employers were Very Satisfied and 25% were Satisfied with services. Employers who report that SEP staff respond quickly to questions and issues in the workplace: 100% Very Satisfied Individuals who report satisfaction with S.E.P. services: 64% Very Satisfied, 28% Satisfied, 8% Neutral.
Participant comments: If someone is looking for a job its a good opportunity for them to be with the Supported Employment Program. Im satisfiedI got what I wanted out of the program.
Employer comments: I believe this program is great. The support is amazing. All ideas & any additional support is always put into place to help the employee be more successful (ie; checklists, pictorials). Staff always respond to emails and any concerns. S.E.P. staff made this happen & has been supportive along the way. The new employee shows promise with some help. S.E.P. staff guidance has made the difference.

The Purpose of the window sticker project is to recognize employers who have hired employees with developmental disabilities. This is part of a promotional campaign developed to inform the public of
the meaning of this window sticker and encourage people to patronize businesses that display this sticker. The stickers are made in BC, and the initial batch of 750 stickers were donated by The Provincial Networking Group Inc. (PNGI)

The CSCLs Supported Employment Program will provide individuals with developmental disabilities the opportunity to perform real work in regular job settings for real wages. This will be achieved by providing all facets of pre-employment training including job search strategies, interview skills, resume preparation and life skills as they relate to the work place. Support staff will assist individuals to decide upon employment goals, will develop and implement marketing plans, provide onsite job coaching, follow-up and monitoring. Supported employment will enhance the quality of lives of individuals by promoting independence, productivity and self esteem.
