Question 2 Carbon monoxide can be oxidised to carbon dioxide. 2CO(g) + O2(g) 2CO2(g) 3 mol of CO and 2 mol of O2 are mixed. When the reaction is complete there will be A. 4 mol of CO2 produced. B. 2 mol of CO2 produced. C. 1 mol of CO unreacted. D. 0.5 mol of O2 unreacted.
A soluble fertiliser contains phosphorus in the form of phosphate ions (PO 43-). To determine the PO43- content by gravimetric analysis, 5.97 g of the fertiliser powder was completely dissolved in water to make a volume of 250.0 mL. A 20.00 mL volume of this solution was pipetted into a conical flask and the PO 43- ions in the solution were precipitated as MgNH4PO4. The precipitate was filtered, washed with water and then converted by heating into Mg2P2O7. The mass of Mg2P2O7 was 0.0352 g. a. Calculate the amount, in mole, of Mg2P2O7.
d. Calculate the percentage of phosphate ions (PO43-) by mass in the fertiliser. Ensure you express your answer to an appropriate number of significant cant figures.
Gravimetric exercises (2005) -1 The following information refers to questions 1 and 2. The amount of calcium carbonate (CaCO 3; molar mass = 100.1 g mol ) in the ore dolomite can be 2+ determined by gravimetric analysis. The dolomite sample is dissolved in acid and the calcium ions (Ca ) present are precipitated as calcium oxalate (CaC 2O4; 11molar mass = 128.1 g mol ). The calcium oxalate is filtered, dried and strongly heated to form calcium oxide (CaO; molar mass = 56.1 g mol ). Question 1 In one analysis the mass of dolomite used was 3.72 g. The mass of calcium oxide formed was found to be 1.24 g. The percentage of calcium carbonate in the dolomite sample is closest to A. 26.9 B. 33.3 C. 56.0 D. 59.5
Question 2 Two possible sources of error in this analysis are I - the precipitate of calcium oxalate is not rinsed with water after being filtered. II - the calcium oxide is not heated to constant mass. Which of these two errors, if any, would lead to a result that is too high? A. I only B. II only C. both I and II D. neither I nor II Click here for solution Question 3 Hydrogen and chlorine react according to the equation H2(g) + Cl2(g) 2HCl(g) 3 mole of H2 and 2 mole of Cl2 are placed in a vessel and sealed. When reaction is complete the vessel will contain A. 5 mole of HCl B. 6 mole of HCl and 1 mole of Cl2 C. 4 mole of HCl and 1 mole of Cl2 D. 4 mole of HCl and 1 mole of H2
Question 4 An organic compound is known to contain only carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. The compound contains, by mass, 39.1% of carbon and 8.7% of hydrogen. The number of carbon atoms in the empirical formula is A. 1 B. 2 C. 3 D. 4 Click here for solution
The diagrams, on the right, represent equipment used in an investigation to determine the chloride ion concentration in a water sample. Atomic mass Ag=107.9, Na=23.0, Cl=35.5, N=14.0, O=16.0
a) Describe how you could, using the equipment in the diagram, determine the chloride ion concentration in a water sample. Include a balanced equation. . Click here for solution
b) If the volume of the water sample being tested is 50.0 mL and the mass of the dried precipitate obtained is 3.65 g, calculate the chloride ion concentration in the water sample in ppm. Click here for solution
