hen renovating
a home, many
homeowners look
to increase the homes curb
appeal. Curb appeal is a
term used to describe how the
homes exterior appears to
buyers the moment they pull
up to the curb. A home that
impresses prospective buyers
before they even go inside is
said to have a strong curb
appeal, and that curb appeal
can add significant value to a
home.
Homeowners looking to
improve the curb appeal of
their home can do so in a vari-
ety of ways. One often over-
looked yet effective way to
make a homes exterior more
appealing is to revamp the
driveway. Driveways may not
be high on a homeowners
renovation totem pole, but a
cracked or unsightly driveway
can give prospective buyers
the impression that a home
has not been properly taken
care of. When addressing a
driveway, homeowners have a
host of paving materials at
their disposal.
ASPHALT
Asphalt is an affordable
paving material, which likely
plays a role in its popularity
among homeowners. Asphalt
is also easy to install and
requires little maintenance,
two additional benefits to
homeowners who dont have
much time to install or look
after their driveway. Asphalt
is made from a combination of
concrete, gravel and tar, and
though its easy and affordable

K
eeping fit is essential
for the older popula-
tion, but many forms
of exercise can be difficult.
Pilates is a great way to stay
in shape while reducing the
risk of injury other exercises
may cause. Pilates focuses on
the quality of movement,
making it one of the best
ways for seniors to stay
healthy.
Pilates is suitable for
everyone, regardless of age or
level of fitness. Pilates can
enhance your immune sys-
tem, breathing and circula-
tion, while reducing stress,
fatigue, headaches and back-
aches.
Pilates lengthens the
muscles of the body instead
of building bulk. This is great
for the older population
because it improves balance,
posture and alignment. All of
these things are important to
continue our daily activities
efficiently. Each Pilates move
has a beginner, intermediate
and advanced stage, so the
class can be adapted to the
individual.
It is never too late to
start exercising, and the gen-
tle stretches of Pilates are a
perfect place to start.
Colleen Fox is the well-
ness coordinator at Cedar
Crest, has a Bachelors Degree
in exercise physiology and is
certified in Pilates. If you are

ntestinal parasites can cause
debilitating medical prob-
lems to dogs and cats, and
even to us humans! Most pets
will have worms at some
point in their lifetimes. These
worms are most commonly
seen in puppies and kittens but
any animal is susceptible, even
a pet that never goes outside.
Roundworms, hookworms,
whipworms, giardia, and coc-
cidia are the most common cul-
prits of these infections.
Routine dewormings and fecal
examinations are the mainstays
of identification and treatment
of these parasites. Year round
total parasite control, usually in
the form of a monthly heart-
worm preventative, is the way
to decrease the incidence of
intestinal parasite infections.
Fecal exams performed by
your veterinarian can diagnose
intestinal parasites by identify-
ing the eggs of the worms.
Adult worms like roundworms,
hookworms, and whipworms
are usually not shed in stools,
making identification by the
pet owner difficult. However,
the eggs of these worms are
present, though they are shed
intermittently. These eggs are
microscopic and too small to be
detected with the naked eye.
The Companion Animal
Parasite Councils guidelines
recommend fecal examinations
two to four times during the
first year of life and one to two
times per year in adults,
depending on health and
lifestyle factors.
Roundworms are the most
common intestinal parasite of
dogs and cats. Roundworm eggs
are shed in the feces of dogs
and cats and are spread when
animals or people come in con-
tact with the feces or soil.
These worms can also be trans-
mitted to puppies before they
are born and to kittens through
infected milk from the mother.
Roundworms can cause diar-
rhea, vomiting, and the potbel-
ly appearance seen in many
puppies. Roundworms do pose
a significant risk to humans.
Contact with contaminated
soil or feces can result in
human ingestion and infection.
Children are more vulnerable
to exposure because they are
more likely to put dirt or other
objects into their mouths.
Roundworms in humans can
cause fever, lung and liver dam-
age, and even blindness.
Hookworms are also a
common parasite in dogs and
cats. These worms are acquired
by adult pets through skin pen-
etration and ingestion of larvae
in contaminated soil. Puppies
and kittens can also be infected
across the placenta and
through milk. These worms
hook themselves to the intes-
tinal wall and feed on blood,
and can rapidly cause anemia
and sometimes black, tarry
stool. Hookworm larvae can
infect humans by penetrating
the surface of a persons skin,
typically through bare feet.
This results in itchiness at the
point where the larvae enter
the skin and visible tracks on
the skin from the worms
migration called cutaneous
larva migrans.
Whipworms infect only
our dogs, not cats. The worms
are passed in the feces and can
cause bloody diarrhea in dogs.
The biggest issue with whip-
worms is how tough they are in
the environment, surviving
adverse conditions and ex-
tremely resistant to drying.
This makes prevention and
diagnosis very important.
The good news is
intestinal parasites are easi-
ly treated with medication
as prescribed by your veteri-
narian. The Companion
Animal Parasite Councils
guideline for deworming and
prevention is as follows:
Administer dewormer to pup-
pies at two, four, six, and eight
weeks of age, followed by
administration of a monthly
preventive. Administer bi-
weekly dewormer treatment to
kittens between three and nine
weeks of age, followed by
administration of a monthly
preventive. Administer year-
round treatment with a heart-
worm preventive that has
broad-spectrum activity against
intestinal parasites. If your pet
was positive for worms,
rechecking the feces is impor-
tant to make sure all worms
have been eliminated.
This is not a complete
list of intestinal parasites and
is not meant to scare you into
fearing your pet, but to vali-
date the importance of regu-
lar fecal exams and year-
round total parasite preven-
tion. To prevent or control
intestinal parasites, consult
your local veterinarian. For
more information on guide-
lines, visit www.petsandpara
sites.org.

P
arents of yesteryear sel-
dom had to worry
about protecting their
kids from strangers once their
kids were safely inside the
home. But since the dawn of
the Internet, parents know
the safety of their private res-
idence can be easily compro-
mised. Be it through social
media, chat rooms or other
online outlets, strangers can
now gain access to children
in a variety of ways, many of
which are seemingly inno-
cent.
The prevalence of on-
line predators has many par-
ents looking for ways to pro-
tect their kids when they go
online. Some parents may
want to outlaw the Internet
altogether until kids reach
high school, but such a reac-
tion can put kids at a signifi-
cant disadvantage academi-
cally by barring them from
what is often a valuable
resource. Parents who want
their kids to get the most out
of the Internet without put-
ting them in danger of online
predators can employ the
following tips.
Warn kids about the poten-
tial risks and dangers of the
Internet. Many parents
would prefer their kids did
not know about Internet
predators, but that wish
should not outweigh the
desire to keep kids safe.
Teach kids that people on
the Internet may not always
behave honestly, misrepre-
senting themselves in an
effort to gain access to unsus-
pecting and often trusting
kids. Teach kids to take the
same approach with online
strangers that they do with
strangers they see in public,
never sharing any personal
information or engaging in
conversation with someone
they dont know. Teach kids
to tell an adult they trust
immediately if an online
stranger contacts them.
Use the filters at your dis-
posal. Parents can filter cer-
tain Web sites so children
cannot access them. Filter
sites geared toward adults as
well as any sites where kids
might be at risk of coming
into contact with potential
predators. Block chat rooms
and other sites where adults
can pose as kids and make
sure kids who are involved
with social media have made
their online profiles private
and only accessible to friends
and family members.
Monitor kids online activi-
ty on a daily basis. The
Internet is such a commonly
used tool that many kids go
online at least once per day.
Homework assignments and
other school functions are
commonly posted online,
and many kids communicate
with friends via the Internet
as much as they do in person.
Parents should monitor their
kids online activity on a
daily basis; scanning their
Web history and examining
their social media interac-
tions to be sure kids arent
putting themselves in harms
way. Kids may grow more
resistant to such monitoring
as they grow older, but par-
ents cannot turn a blind eye
to kids online activity sim-
ply to avoid a confrontation.

T
he kitchen is ar-
guably the most-used
room in the house
during waking hours. Having
a kitchen that is laid out in an
efficient manner can improve
productivity and make for a
more enjoyable experience.
Designers often stress having
an effective work triangle in
the kitchen. The phrase
kitchen work triangle start-
ed with the Building Research
Council (formerly the Small
Homes Council) at the
University of Illinois. The
idea came from studies of
space usage and the search for
efficient kitchen designs.
What the triangle essentially
means is positioning three key
items of the kitchen for effi-
ciency. The stove, sink and
refrigerator represent the
three main points of the trian-
gle. Having these items spaced
accordingly can make work
easier. Having them too close
together can create a
cramped, ineffective room.
The placement of the triangle
to install, asphalt, as any kid
can tell you, can get awfully
hot under the summer sun.
Asphalt can also crack rather
easily, so homeowners must
weigh its immediate afford-
ability against the likelihood
that perhaps it will need to be
replaced sooner than other
materials.
BRICK
Brick is among the more
expensive paving materials, as
brick is a labor-intensive
material to install. But brick
allows homeowners to create
distinctive patterns that can
add quite a bit to a homes
curb appeal. Once installed,
brick driveways dont require
much maintenance, though
cracked bricks will need to be
replaced.
COBBLESTONE
Cobblestone can be very
pleasing to the eye, but that
aesthetic appeal wont come
cheap. Among the more
expensive paving materials,
cobblestone can also be a
handful to maintain, as weeds
can penetrate the cobble-
stones rather easily. Loose or
missing stones can be unsight-
ly and will need to be
replaced.
Many homeowners who
love the look of cobblestone
choose to use it along walk-
ways or on their patios, as
these areas wont require as
much materials, saving both
money and the time it takes to
maintain the cobblestones.
CONCRETE
Concrete is perhaps the
ideal paving material for the
homeowner who wants to
express his or her individuali-
ty. Thats because concrete
driveways can be laid in a
variety of colors and designs,
adding a touch of personality
in a place many homeowners
likely thought such expression
was impossible.
Though affordable, con-
crete can fall victim to the
elements, as extremely cold
temperatures can cause the
concrete to shift and ultimate-
ly crack. Concrete pavers can
remedy this problem, though
that will add to the overall
cost of the project.
GRAVEL
A gravel driveway can
give a home a historical look
that few of todays homes can
boast. Gravel is an affordable
material that requires little
maintenance, though weeds
can grow through gravel and
must be removed to maintain
the driveways appeal.
Washout is a concern for some
who want a gravel driveway,
but edging the driveway with
a material like timber or blue-
stone can prevent the gravel
from washing away should
heavy rains fall.

points alone does not make a
successful layout. According
to the University of Missouri
Extension, the triangle space
should also be measuredac-
cordingly. Put 4 to 7 feet
between the refrigerator and
sink, 4 to 6 feet between the
sink and stove and 4 to 9 feet
between the stove and refrig-
erator, with the ideal size
resulting in a work triangle
where the three sides total
between 15 and 22 feet.
human urine may work as
well. Reapplying the product
weekly around the plants is a
good idea.
REPEL THE DEER
There are many organic
or chemically-based products
on the market that deer may
find offensive to the taste or
smell.
Hot pepper, sulfur and
eggs or even the use of soapy
water have been successful in
certain instances. The use of
blood meal or even human
hair around the garden may
repel the deer and keep them
on a different foraging path.
However, remember that any
deer that is very hungry may
ignore unpleasant tastes or
smells for a quick bite.
CHANGE PLANTS
If other food sources are
available, there are some
species of plants and trees
that deer will avoid. Filling
your garden with these plants
can help you maintain a beau-
tiful, albeit untasty, environ-
ment for deer.
When planting annuals,
select among:
Alyssum, Begonias,
Calendula, Celosia,
Dianthus, Foxglove,
Geraniums, Parsley, Poppy,
Snapdragons
In terms of perennials, plant
these items once, and deer
could stay away:
Ageratum, Anemone, Astibe,
Bearded iris, Catmint,
Honeysuckle, Lantana,
Monkshood, Rock rose,
Rosemary, Soapwort,
Wisteria
Plant these herbs alongside
flowers for even more pro-
tection:
Chives, Eucalyptus, Garlic,
Mint, Thyme, Wintergreen
Gardeners who use a
combination of methods to
keep deer out of their yards
and gardens may have a high-
er success rate at deterring
these animals.

S
oup-only suste-
nance, de-toxify-
ing smoothies
and fat-burning super-
foods are just a few of
the many ways people
have attempted to lose
weight in recent years.
Although many diets
can help a person shed
unwanted pounds or get
healthier, many more
fail to address the prob-
lems boomerang dieters often
face: the fundamental lifestyle
choices that lead to weight
gain in the first place.
A common problem for
dieters is the inability to keep
weight off once they have
lost it. Registered dieticians
Julie Upton and Katherina
Brooking, authors of the book,
The Real Skinny: Appetite for
Healths 101 Fat Habits & Slim
Solutions (Tarcher/Penguin),
find that there is a pattern to
the weight gain yo-yo. That
pattern, the authors suggest,
often involves unhealthy fat
habits that are a common
component of dieting woes.
Once these poor lifestyle
choices are recognized and
replaced with slim solutions,
weight loss and a healthy rela-
tionship with food is much
more attainable.
Upton, a representative
of the American Dietetic
Assoc-iation and frequent
contributor to national news
programs, and Brooking, who
has a masters degree in nutri-
tion science from Columbia
University, combine their
experience and expertise on
the subject of food and also
include data collected from
numerous nutritionists and
dieticians in their book.
Instead of touting
quick-fixes, gimmicks
and the latest trendy
food, the authors
present a weight-loss
guide that offers real
solutions for real life.
Examples of some of
the strategies offered
in the book include:
Stop placing blame
on others or finding
excuses why you cant
lose weight and focus on the
ways you can.
Understand the facts behind
metabolic rate and find the
right number to burn the max-
imum number of calories.
Know the difference
between curves and extra
pounds.
Recognize that losing weight
is actually the easy part.
Keeping the weight off is the
real challenge. Aiming for
smaller goals (5 percent of
body weight at a time) can
help you keep weight off over
the long haul.
Exercise is essential. Few
people can keep weight in
check without increas-
ing physical activity.
Increase the amount of
protein you eat, which
can help you feel sated
and less likely to
overeat. Upton and
Brooking suggest these

computer should be kept in a
common area where parents
can monitor how much time
kids are spending online,
what theyre doing and who
theyre speaking to while
surfing the Internet. When
kids have their own comput-
ers or tablets in their bed-
rooms, parents can easily lose
track of how much time kids
are spending online. This
makes it easier for online
predators to gain access to
kids, who have a harder time
recognizing potential preda-
tors than adults.
Remember kids can get
online on their Smart-
phones, too. Computers are
no longer the only way for
kids to get online. More and
more kids, especially those in
high school, are doing their
online surfing via their
Smartphones. Monitor kids
mobile phone usage just like
you do their computer usage.
Peruse their call and texting
history, and discuss any sus-
pect usage with them imme-
diately.
Kids spend more time
online now than ever before,
and that usage figures to
increase in the coming years
as the Internet becomes
increasingly accessible.
Parents should take steps to
ensure their youngsters are
safe when going online.

Finding

Restaurant

Party
O
ver the last couple of years, dining out has become an even bigger luxury than it
once was. Thanks to the struggling economy, many people have decided to cut
back on spending, and dining out has become casualty of such events.
While the economy is gradually rebounding, dining out is still largely reserved for
special occasions among those whose memory of the recession is still fresh. However,
dining out does remain a strong choice when hosting a special occasion such as a birthday
party or anniversary celebration. When choosing a restaurant to have such a gathering,
consider the following tips to ensure that rare restaurant night out goes off without a hitch.
NEW
whats
in dining?
Look for versatility in a menu. When
dining out, the emphasis is obviously on the
food. Couples might enjoy certain
restaurants they have previously patronized,
but that does not necessarily make the
restaurant ideal for a party. When shopping
for a restaurant, look for one that boasts a
versatile menu that can cater to a vast array
of palates. Especially for larger parties, the
versatility of the menu is very important.
Restaurants that boast a large entree
selection that includes meat, poultry,
seafood, and even vegetarian dishes ensures
each guest has options.
Examine the elbow room. Because dining
out has become such a luxury, comfort
should be another key consideration. Look
for a restaurant that provides ample elbow
room so everyone can relax and wont feel
crowded.
Be sure there are places to park. Chances
are, most guests will be driving to the party.
While it seems like an afterthought, the
restaurant should provide ample, and ideally
free, parking. Avoid restaurants that charge
for valet service or inquire if such service
can be included on the tab ahead of time.
Reserve well in advance. If its a truly
special occasion, be sure to begin the process
of finding a restaurant as early as possible
and make a reservation the moment a
decision is made. Reservations can always
be cancelled should things not work out.

W
hile the Decla-
ration of Indepen-
dence states that
we have the right to life, lib-
erty and the pursuit of happi-
ness, sometimes lives are lost,
liberties are denied and happi-
ness is ruined by people and
companies who behave badly.
At times that bad behavior is
intentional, but very often it
is the result of negligence.
Negligence sometimes
includes those situations
where a person knows or
should know their actions
pose a risk to others but con-
sciously disregards that risk
and engages in risky behavior.
Many times negligence in-
cludes that situation where a
licensed professional fails to
live up to the minimum stan-
dards of performance and the
duty owed a client or a patient
he or she is serving. Neg-
ligence sometimes in-volves
something as everyday and
mundane as the failure to
remove ice from ones side-
walk in a timely manner. It
can include something as dra-
matic as an airline pilot, a
ships captain, a train engineer
or a bus driver taking the con-
trols while drunk or falling
asleep while in control.
Another example of negli-
gence is when a pharmaceuti-
cal company sells a drug that
does not meet FDA standards,
and the person taking the
drug is harmed.
What is important to
know is often times people are
not hurt by negligent behav-
ior but not always.
When people are not
spared the effects of the negli-
gence of others, when their
lives, liberty or happiness are
destroyed or just damaged, the
law offers help to the victims.
There is nothing the law can
do to bring back lives lost or
restore lives broken or banish
the sadness it caused, but it
can help the victims of negli-
gence cope with its effects and
hopefully restore order to
their lives.
Through the mechanism
and procedures of the civil
justice system in the form of a
lawsuit, the law provides the
victim the opportunity to
obtain a money judgment that
can help pay for medical
expenses, to help make up for
lost income, to help defray
other financial losses, and to
compensate them for pain,
suffering and other personal,
physical, psychological or
emotional damage.
Before any lawsuit is
started, the facts and available
evidence of a particular case
must be carefully investigated,
assembled, and evaluated to
determine whether a legiti-
mate and legally supportable
claim exists that can justify
bringing legal action. If a law-
suit is pursued, it must be
started within the time frame
of the applicable statute of
limitations. It is the responsi-
bility of the attorney to then
litigate and/or negotiate to
settle the case.
A lot of time, effort,
knowledge and experience is
required to successfully win
the lawsuit or bring a success-
ful settlement. This cannot be
done without an experienced
attorney who can properly
represent those who have suf-
fered.
Through its 38 years of
practice, Azrak & Associates
has successfully helped victims
of negligence win in various
courts or reach a successful set-
tlement. If you feel that you are
a victim of negligence, contact
our office at 973-839-9062 or
lawyers@ azraklaw.com for a
consultation. Usually, we can
quickly determine if you have a
cause for which the civil justice
system can provide a remedy.

uying a new home is
the most expensive
purchase a person is
likely to make in his or her
lifetime. It also can be one of
the more stressful. The
Employee Relocation Council
states that moving is the third
most stressful event in life, fol-
lowing death and divorce. But
a well-timed move can reduce
stress and save money.
Moving during certain
times of the year can result in
considerable savings. Moving
during the summer, when
children are out of school and
the weather is nice can make a
move more manageable. Keep
in mind that because late
spring and summer are the
peak moving seasons, they
also tend to be more expen-
sive. Many moving companies
and truck rental agencies will
charge a premium if you use
their services during the sum-
mer. Furthermore, crews may
change in the summer when
students on vacation could fill
in for regular, more experi-
enced movers.
High prices are not only
reserved for those who buy a
new house during the spring
and summer. Renters may find
spring and summer is also the
peak season for rentals. Many
apartment managers can
attest that the dates between
June 2 and August 30 are
quite busy in terms of apart-
ment turnover. College stu-
dents are more likely to move
as soon as the academic year
ends, and many landlords plan
leases to expire in the summer
months to ensure that re-rent-
ing places will be easier
thanks to a flooded apart-
ment market. According to
Apartment Wiz, a Houston-
based apartment locating
service, although there might
be greater apartment avail-
ability during the warm-
weather months, it also
means greater competition
between prospective tenants.
That greater competition can
drive up prices.
But apartments are hard-
er to fill in the fall or at the
onset of winter. Thats because
many people do not want the
hassle of moving once school
has started or the weather has
chilled. Landlords who are
stuck paying utilities and
advertising fees for vacant
apartments are far more likely

Time your move right to save money
continued on page 28
to negotiate rent prices, lease
terms and even security
deposits during the winter in
an effort to fill the apartment
quickly.
People sitting with
homes on the market are also
more likely to negotiate dur-
ing cooler months when foot
traffic has fizzled out. That
can make shopping for a home
in the fall advantageous to
home buyers.
Here are some other tips
to reduce stress and save
money when moving into a
new home or apartment.
Move mid-week. Weekends
are a prime time for truck
rentals and moving compa-
nies. Pick a Tuesday or a
Wednesday to move, and
youre much more likely to
find an available moving serv-
ice (even during peak moving
months); you may even be
able to negotiate a lower rate.
Pick a mid-month moving
date. Many people move at
the beginning of the month
when leases are up or after
mortgage payments are made.
Fewer people move in the
middle of the month, so you
might find more affordable
moving deals if you can wait a
few extra weeks.
Schedule a fall or winter
move. The American Moving
and Storage Association say
half of all moves occur during
one-third of the year
between the beginning of May
and Labor Day. Beat the rush
by moving outside of these
dates.
Get an early start. Many
people underestimate the
amount of time it takes to
actually move their belong-
ings. Try to schedule a moving
company to come very early
in the morning to give you
ample time to pack up the
truck and unpack at your new
home.
