Department of Biomedical Engineering BME 698-006 BioMEMS: Design and Research

Description: The course provides students with design methods of biomedical micro-electro-mechanical devices (BioMEMS) and integrated biometric systems. The course introduces the student to the miniaturized bioMEMS systems for DNA analysis, micro-fluidic devices for drug delivery, cell separation by dielectrophoresis, fluid mixing, lab-on-a-chip devices, pressure sensors, and biosensors using electrochemical, optoelectronics, and acoustoelectronics transducer platforms. Students do individual and teamwork research and prepare a presentation on a specific topic using published articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Prerequisites: BioMEMS 479-001, Chem 125, Chem 126, Phys 111, Phys 121, senior standing, and permission of instructor Co requisite: none Textbook(s)/Materials Required: Scientific Articles, Class lecture notes Objectives: 1. Provide general design techniques for miniaturized biomedical sensors, actuators and bioMEMS using simulation, materials science, semiconductor systems, optoelectronics, microelectronics circuits, electrochemical solid state devices, and transducer platforms. 2. Analyze design concepts of interface silicon/cell systems and integrated bioMEMS devices based on lab-on-a-chip concepts for DNA analysis, bacteria detection, cell research, cell statistics, drug delivery, biomedical sensors and actuators. 3. Develop multi-disciplinary research skills on system and fabrication design of innovative lab-on-achip integrated biomedical devices involving technical, feasibility, device performance, cost, and market need analysis. Topics: Bioanalytical sensors and actuators, specifications, and principle of operation. Integrated smart biomedical devices using bioMEMS and integrated microelectronics circuits. Design concepts of bioMEMS transducer platforms using optoelectronics, acoustoelectronics, and electrochemical. Design of biomedical pressure sensors, optical fiber endoscopes, and analytical microsensors. Design of microfluidic devices for DNA analysis, drug delivery, and fluid mixing Figures of merit, specifications, performance parameters, and biocompatibility of integrated bioMEMS. Silicon, glass, polymer, and ceramic wafers as basic materials for biomedical devices and interface with living cells. Design of packaging systems for bioMEMS using micromachining technologies. Combined design methods for integrated devices and microfabrication process Advanced soft lithography techniques and chemical etching for microfluidic systems. Thin film deposition and metallization of polymer substrates used for biomedical device fabrication. Polymer wafer bonding and integration concepts. Characterization methods for testing biomedical materials and devices Market and economics of the fabrication of miniaturized devices for biomedical application Schedule: 2 hour lecture; once per week

Course Objective 2: Analyze design concepts of integrated bioMEMS devices based on lab-on-a-chip concepts for DNA analysis, bacteria detection, cell research, cell statistics, drug delivery, biomedical sensors and actuators.
C-3) Demonstrate the ability to test the proposed design solution to determine if it meets the required needs. Determine a list of specifications for a given bioMEMS, select and design appropriate transducer platform, define all figures of merit, design microfabrication process flow, analyze possible errors and troubleshooting options. Prepare a presentation on a specific bioMEMS, discuss in detail principle of operation, specifications, parameters. Course Objective 3: Develop multi-disciplinary research skills on system and fabrication design of innovative lab-on-a-chip integrated biomedical devices involving technical, feasibility, device performance, cost, and market need analysis.
E-2) Present a suitable solution and/or logical answer to an engineering problem. I-2) Demonstrates the ability to self educate. Design of a specific lab-on-a-chip system, perform materials, process, and packaging design, simulate all dynamic parameters, prepare a set of optimized performance parameters. Demonstrate ability to read and understand a scientific article related to some BioMEMS system. Demonstrate ability to evaluate critically the merits of the paper and eventual flaws and suggest options for troubleshooting problems.
