Nation Building Working Group Convenes at Harvard University


Symposium brings together university programs and tribal representatives to discuss collaborations and community needs. CAMBRIDGE, MA, May 15, 2013: The Harvard University Native American Program in conjunction with the Harvard Project on American Indian Economic Development Honoring Nations Program held a one day symposium highlighting the work universities, foundations, and professional organizations are doing in support of tribal Nation Building. Supported by the Hauser Fund Grant Program through the Harvard Initiative on Learning and Teaching, participants and presenters formed a working group of university and professional programs. University programs represented included the American Indian Studies program and the Center for American Indian Education at Arizona State University, the Native American Studies program at Dartmouth College, the One Sky National Resource Center for American Indian/Alaska Native Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services at the Oregon Health and Science University, the American Indian Studies Programs and the Native Nations Institute in the Udall Center for Studies in Public Policy at The University of Arizona, the Tribal Learning Community and Education Exchange program at the University of California Los Angeles, the Joseph A. Meyers Center for Research on Native American Research at the University of California Berkeley, and the Partnerships for Native Health program at the University of Washington. The National Congress of American Indians, the National Indian Education Association, and the Bush Foundation also participated. Representatives from the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation, the Fort Peck Tribes Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Wellness Program, and the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin shared their experiences working with universities to address some of their most pressing needs. The experiences and suggestions shared at the symposium were discussed the following day by the newly created working group whose focus will include

opening up avenues to access university knowledge and resources to meet the needs of tribes and community leaders. Present at the working group meeting were; Dr. Manley Begay from the University of Arizona, Dr. Dedra Buchwald from the University of Washington, Dr. Steve Colt from the University of Alaska, Dr. Michelle Hale from Arizona State University, Ms. Megan Minoka Hill from the Honoring Nations Program, Mr. Norbert Hill from the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin, Mr. Dwight Lomayesva from the University of California Los Angeles, Ms. Shelly C. Lowe from the Harvard University Native American Program, Dr. Dawn Mackety from the National Indian Education Association, Dr. Dennis Norman from Harvard University, Ms. June Noronha and Mr. Jaime Pinkham from the Bush Foundation, Dr. Martn Snchez-Jankowski from the University of California Berkeley, Dr. Malia Villegas from the National Congress of American Indians, and Dr. Dale Walker from the One Sky Center. The Harvard University Native American Program, an Interfaculty Initiative under the Office of the President and Provost, brings together students, faculty and scholars for the purpose of advancing the well being of Indigenous peoples through self-determination, academic achievement, and community service.
