It is necessary to emphasize that when we speak of a code of ethics we are not talking about the law. In well governs and law abiding societies like Japan, there are adequate professions in law to protect the legal rights of every citizen. In the code of ethics, our concern is with what is morally wrong or right. Situations which require the professional engineer to consider the morality of his actions arises under circumstances in which they may exist conflict of interest between the individual professional and any or all of the entities with which he has to interact i.e., community, employee, client or person. The hallmark of a true professional is the care and diligence which he exercises in the execution of duties in his professional calling. The professional owes a duty of care

towards those he serves in ensuring that their interests are protected and in this respect, there is a guideline which is what the code of ethics is all about.

The importance of integrity Our moral principles are statements of what we believe to be rules of right conduct. As a child we may have been thought a principle along the line of dont lie, dont cheat or steal or have anything to do with those who do. As we become an adult, we need to make more complex decisions, we often reflect on our principles when we consider what we ought to do in different situations. Example; Is it ok to lie to protect someones feelings? Is it ok to exaggerate your work experience on your CV? Can you cut some corners on a project to meet the tight deadline?

If a person act with integrity that person acts in ways that are consistent with his own code of principle. Indeed, integrity is one of the cornerstones of ethical behavior.
