exas Hill Country is known as the heart of Texas. Texas has plenty of beautiful natural attractions, including forests, plains, deserts, mountains, ocean fronts, drylands, wetlands and almost every ecosystem loved by man. The Hill Country of Texas is known as the backyard playground for Texans and visitors alike. Our 2013 Annual Convention is being held Thursday, September 12 to Sunday, September 15 in the heart of the Texas Hill Country. And, like everything in Texas, the 2013 Program Committee is doing it all in a BIG way, starting with our beautiful resort and convention space. Set among the picturesque Hill Country near San Antonio, Texas on 600 scenic acres, the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort offers the largest convention and meeting space in the area with 265,000 square feet. This sophisticated yet relaxed resort destination is sure to inspire, and provides the perfect environment for business and networking, as well as a little fun and relaxation. Our 2013 Convention theme Make It Happen is born out of the challenging business times we have all been experiencing for the past many years. We have all learned how to adjust to the new normal and find our ways to Make It happen each and every day both in our business and personal lives. Taking control of our destiny and being todays leaders is the backbone of our industry. Leadership is core to our success. The keynote speaker for the 2013 NIBA convention is Howard Putnam, the former CEO of Southwest Airlines. His powerful message will focus on the importance of people in successful business and leadership. Along with Mr. Putnam, other valuable sessions will focus on todays important topics for business leaders, including sessions on new media marketing and the Affordable Care Act. As always, the highlight of the NIBA Annual Convention will be the highly rated Convention Expo, which will be held
Sunday, September 15 this year. Be sure to join us for the opportunity to view the incredible showcase of products and services from our participating industry manufacturers. Additionally, the ability to catch up and network with friends and industry colleagues is always a bonus! As is the tradition at the NIBA Convention, the closing event will be a spectacle you dont want to miss. We will close this years Convention at the beautiful Knibbe Ranch, enjoying everything from mechanical bull rides to Texas 2 Step dancing. The venue will allow the attendees to engage in some networking, all the while enjoying the festivities being offered. Its hard for me to believe that my term as President is already half over. This year has been a challenging experience for me, balancing my responsibilities at NIBA with my real job back at home, as well as my real responsibilities as a father and husband, but it has been a privilege and an honor to serve, and I cant begin to place a value on how this experience has helped me grow as a person. Im looking forward to a long hot summer with a few family vacations, but I cant wait for September to arrive. San Antonio will be an amazing convention and Im looking forward to seeing my NIBA family again. Hopefully somewhere in-between the networking, break-out sessions, and keynote speakers, I will find some time to float down the lazy river and enjoy an ice-cold beverage. I hope to see you there!

he NIBA Technical and Education Committee is always looking for ways to improve upon that which is established. This year, with the significant assistance of Almex Group, we were able to host the single largest HD Splicing seminar with the largest number of NIBA members on record. Member company participants included: Blair Rubber; Depreux; Flexco; Great Lakes Belting; Industrial Rubber Specialists; Kaman Industrial; Mulhern Belting; Nashville Rubber and Gasket; Quality Belt Services; Regional Conveyor Services; REMA Tip Top; Rubber and Accessories; Texas Rubber; Turner Supply; and Virginia Carolina Belting. In addition, there were member supported facilitators or observers from an additional seven companies. We should be proud of the action in which these member companies engaged to support the training events geared to strengthen the belting industry. During the two and one half day event, attendees with all levels of splicing experience were encouraged to participate in interactive classroom training. Instruction on the myths of this is how weve always done it arguments versus industry standards made for engaging dialog. Splicing choices were first pre-empted through detailed understanding of how a conveyor belt is manufactured. This was followed by performance parameters throughout the conveyor structure. Terms such as T1 and T2, operating versus rated tension, motor HP calculation for operating tension, and all manner of splicing considerations were detailed. Hands-on vulcanizing train-
ing, both step and finger splicing, set the stage for understanding the underlying chemistry of the process, as well as techniques for maximizing the splice strength. Mechanical splicing also played a role. Benefits and limitations were discussed, as was selection and installation demonstrations. The event was concluded by pull testing adhesions on the class sample splices. This made for some surprising results and very active class participation and interactive learning. The Technical and Education committee is grateful for the support of the members and the NIBA Board. It is also paramount to recognize Almex Group for hosting the event at their new spacious and state-of-the-art facility in Atlanta, GA. The record breaking size of the 2013 HD Splice school could not have been possible without their support. As it is, the attendees were exposed to the best the industry has to offer, setting the stage for challenging the experienced and educating the novice.

he emphasis on training is increasing all the time within our organizations. With the majority of our companies setting a credit hour requirement each year for all employees, it can become difficult to find new and creative courses and material. Organizations are depending more and more on in-house training and continuous improvement programs, which is why a Train the Trainer seminar could be the answer to jump start your companies training programs. A Train the Trainer seminar is simply a dynamic training session developed for your managers or employees that are responsible for conducting training with in your organization. We have all sat through plenty of power point lectures in our day. This program focuses on new and creative ways to engage your audience, understand the adult learner, essential delivery skills, and activities that enhance learning. New and fun ways to conduct training include utilizing hands on product sessions, role playing, case studies, games, panel discussions, and other techniques the make training fun and exciting. The goal is to make learning new products exciting and stick long after the session is over.
As a product manager myself who is burdened with the responsibility of conducting two day training sessions quarterly on the subject of lightweight/ heavyweight belting products and applications, I find myself struggling to keep it fresh and exciting. After attending a local Train the Trainer seminar put on by the Fred Pryor Seminars, I found myself enjoying the role of a facilitator once again. I assure you the sales associates that attend the training are happy they no longer have to stare at the back of my head and power point slides for 8 hours a day. I highly recommend attending one the Train the Trainer seminars. It is an excellent way to pinpoint training needs in your organization and prepare, plan, and execute those training sessions. Visit www.pryor.com to learn more about these Train the Trainer programs.

The New Generation SM5 Tension Meter provides a belt-frequency reading of 7Hz to 450 Hz +/-5 Hz. Featuring staggered-leg geometry with four alternating point levels between the top and bottom of the fastener strip, G Series Fasteners provide varying points of penetration versus a continuous line. This increases the strength and durability of the splice. G Series Fasteners are machine-applied for consistent compression, resulting in a uniform and flat splice, even with belts that are prone to belt wave. Compatible with slider bed conveyors, G Series Fasteners are ideal for use in food manufacturing, package and parts handling, and filter media. This spring, Flexco introduced Clipper Laundry Patch Fasteners to its lineup. The fasteners integrate proven Clipper wire hooks with a heat and pressure sensitive patch. When applied with the custom lacer with heated jaws, the fasteners are installed simultaneously with the application of the patch material. During the application process the adhesive melts, permeates the laundry tapes to bind the fibers and once cooled provides a strong, long-lasting splice. The installation is 2.5 times faster than conventional installation methods. Once installed the hooks are covered by the patch material and prevent linens from catching on the splice in the laundry feeding and folding equipment. When conventional rubber lagging fails to correct belt slippage, Flexco recommends Flex-Lag Medium Ceramic Lagging. Whether the conditions are dry, wet, muddy, or sticky, Flex-Lag Medium Ceramic Lagging is up for the task. With 39% ceramic tile coverage, the raised dimples embed themselves into the belts underside to achieve non-abrasive
