PART I GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
0.
FOREWORD
0.1 This Indian Standard (Part I) was adopted by the Indian Standards Institution on 26 February 1976, after the draft finalized by the Sanitary Appliances and Water Fittings Sectional Committee had been approved by the Civil Engineering Division Council. 0.2 The injection moulded HDPE fittings are used for connection, welding process, to HDPE pipes covered by IS : 4984-1972*. by
0.3 The requirements of injection moulded HDPE fittings are covered in .seven parts of the standard as given on page 10. This part of the series deals with the general requirements applicable to all IIDPE fittings. Specific requirements of .different types of fittings are covered in separate parts of the standard. 0.4 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS :2-1960t. The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified
value in this standard.
1. SCOPE 1.1 This standard ( Part I ) covers general requirements for materials, manufacture, methods.of test and inspection, and marking of all types of injection moulded HDPE fittings intended for connection to HDPE pipes covered by IS : 4984-1972* for potable water supplies.

2. COMPOSITION 2.1 The fittings shall be moulded from a compound consisting of virgin polyethylene in which carbon black and a suitable nonctoxic anti-oxidant are evenly dispersed. The addition of not more than 10 percent of the manufacturers own rework material resulting from the manufacture of fittings to this standard is permissible. No other rework material shall be used. The compound shall have a melt flow index not exceeding 0.4 when tested in accordance with IS : 2530-1963*. 2.1.1 The density 094 g/ml at 27C. 2.1.2 of the base polyethylene shall be greater than
The carbon black shall comply with the following requirements: when tested Appendix A in of

5. DIMENSIONS
5.1 The outside diameters and corresponding wall thicknesses of fittings at the free ends for weld shall comply with those given in Table 1 of IS : 4984-1972..
5.2 The outside diameters shall be the average of two measurements taken at right angles. The wall thickness shall be measured with a ball ended micrometer. Resulting dimension shall be expressed to 0.1 mm. 6. PERFORMANCE
6.1 Hydraulic REQmEMENTS - A fitting duly welded on all sides to straight length of a pipe of pressure rating (class) to which the fitting corres onds, when subjected to internal tessure creep rupture test in actor cp ante with the procedure given in 5 .%I of. IS : 4984-1972*, shall show no signs of localized swelling, leakage or weeping and shall not burst during the prescribed test duration. The temperatures, duration of test and stresses for the test shall conform to the requirements given in Table 3 of IS: 4984-1972*. Characteristics
6.2 Reversion Test-When tested in accordance with the procedure given in 7.3.2 of IS : 49341972* the dimensions shall not change by more than 3 percent in the lonnitudinal direction. 7. SAMPLING
7.1 Production Routine Tests - These tests are spot tests carried out during-manufacture to prove the quality of a lot of fittings, and shall be carried out bv the method specified in 4, 5, 6.1 and 6.2.
7.1.1 Lot - All fittings of the same size, same thickness, same length and produced from an injection moulding machine, in a single consignInents, shall be grouped together to constittrte a lot. 7.1.2 The conformity of the lot of the requirements of this spe& Scation shall be ascertained for each lot separately. The number of fittings to be sampled from each lot shall depend on the size of the lot and shall be in accordance with co1 1 and 2 of Table 2. 7.1.2.1 These fittings shall be selected from the lot at random. order to ensure the randomness of selection, procedures given l$ : 4995-1968t may be followed. 7.1.3 Number J{ Tests and Criteria for ConformiQ 7.1.3.1

The lot shall be deemed to satisfy the requirements of this specification if the number of defective fittings found in the sample does not exceed the corresponding acceptance number B given in co1 4 of Table 2, otherwise the lot shall be rejected. 8. MARKING
8.-l Ail fittings shall be clearly and indelibly marked at a prominent place visible even after the installation of the fittings with the following information: a) The manufazturers name or identificatibn mark, and b) The size of the fitting and the appropriate class (working pressure) of IS : 4984-1972* to which the pressure rating of the titting corresponds.

ISr8008(PartI)-1976 8.1.1 HDPE fittings conforming to specific requirements as prescribed .in the relevant parts of the standard may also be marked with Standard Mark . For fittings for which specific requirements have not been laid ln various parts of this standard, Standard Mark may be based ori the general requirements.
NOTE -The use of the Standard Mark is governed by the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 1986 and the Rules and Regulations made thereunder. The Standard Mark on products covered by an Indian Standard conveys the assurance that they have been produced to comply with, tho requirements of that standard under a well defineti system of inspection, t&ting and quality control which is devised and supervised by BIS and operated by the producer. Standard marked products are also continuously checked by BIS for conformity to that standard as a further safeguard. Details of conditions under which a license for thd use of the Standard Mark may be granted to manufacturers or producers may be obtained from the Bureau of-Indian Standards.
