Explaining how the people of Greece adapted to and/or changed their environment to meet their needs Essential Questions In what ways did Ancient Greeks adapt to their environment? Materials for Learning Activity Boxes worksheet ( one per student) Pictures of different environments Procedure for Learning Activity Introduction ( 5 min., Whole Group) The teacher will introduce a character (Jim) to the class. He/she will set up the scenario that this character is moving and needs to find a place with a good environment to live in. Activity ( 20-25 min. Whole Group and Small Group) Each student will get the boxes worksheet. The teacher will show a picture on the Smart Board of an environment and in a small group he students will discuss with one another what the character could do with that land if they moved there. The students will write what they think in each box for each picture shown: there will be one with a river in it, a forest, a desert, and tropical location. When the students are finished discussing in their small groups, the class will come back as a whole and see what everyone said. Teacher will write down their answers on the board. After they have completed the boxes the teacher will explain that just as Jim needed to see what he could do with his environment and how he

would change it in order to survive, the Ancient Greeks had to do the same thing. The Greeks had to adapt to their environment in order to live. Show picture of hills on the Smart Board. Ask the class: What do you think the Ancient Greeks did on the hills they have? After class guesses, discuss how they used the hills for farming. Show picture of mountains. Ask the class, Since a lot of Greece is mountains, how did people settle down and build homes? After they guess, discuss how they actually built small communities in the mountains since they had to make best with the land they had. Show picture of Greece with the Sea all around it. Ask the class: If Greece is surrounded by water, what did they use the Mediterranean Sea for? Discuss how the Ancient Greeks used the Mediterranean Sea to trade with other countries. Closing (5 min. Individual) Students will then have a writing assignment. They will have to choose one way the Greeks adapted to their environment and why they did it. Assessment Observation- Most of the assessment will be from observation and discussion of the pictures and the questions the teacher asks the students. Writing- the teacher will collect the small writing assignment that the children have. He/she will look at them for an understanding of adaptation. Differentiation Advanced Learners- For those who are advanced, I would have them answer a more advanced writing prompt instead of the ones given to the others. Instead, I would have him/her answer if they would have adapted the same way the Greeks did? If no, what would you have done with the mountain, hills, and ocean? If yes, why would you have done that? Struggling Learners- I could work one on one with them while the other students are completing their writing assignment. Also, I could have a chart for them to fill out as we go along the adaptations of the Greeks so they have something to look at. Visual Learners- Pictures are provided of all the different environments for these learners. Technology Integration Smart Board- used to project the pictures of the environment on for the whole class to see.
