Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) Integrated with Fire Detection System
INTRODUCTION
We have all heard the adage, seeing is believing. It is human nature to trust what we see. Video cameras can provide valuable visual information to operating personnel when used in conjunction with fire detection systems. The purpose of this paper is to discuss modern Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) flame detection technology and the integration of CCTV with fire detection systems.
TYPICAL SYSTEM
The following describes a simple integrated flame detection/CCTV system and how it might function. The first component of the system is typically a fire alarm control panel that is third-party approved to the requirements of NFPA 72. It is addressable so individual alarm points can be easily identified by the operator and associated with specific cameras on the CCTV system. It is also capable of communicating with DCS, PLC and other systems via relay contacts or other communication protocols, such as MODBUS. The fire alarm system consists of several different components including optical flame detectors, smoke detectors, manual call stations, horns, strobes, suppression actuation valves, etc. The CCTV side of the system contains multiple cameras, a DVR/video controller, and a monitor. The cameras are mounted so their views closely match those of the optical flame detectors. The DVR/video controller has multiple channel inputs, one for each camera. The DVR/controller has either input contacts and/or is capable of communicating with the fire alarm control panel via MODBUS or contacts. The DVR is capable of simultaneously recording the video from all of the cameras, and keeping the last 10 minutes of non-event video. The recording quality and frame rate are all configurable based on the users needs. The normal screen on the CCTV monitor will show the live video from all or some of the detectors.

In the event of a detected fire, multiple actions will be taken. First and foremost, the fire alarm system will annunciate a fire and execute the automatic actions based on its configuration. This could include activating horns and strobes, fire suppression, and sending signals to other systems do things like shut off ventilation, close fire doors, etc. Second, the fire alarm system will communicate with the DVR/video controller and tell it which detector is in alarm. This requires that the detector incorporates an output for this purpose that can be used without conflict with the fire alarm system (because the outputs cannot be shared). The video controller will then maximize the view of the camera that is associated with the first detector in alarm. With this enlarged, high-quality, real-time video of the situation, the operator can immediately review the situation and take the appropriate action. Simultaneously the DVR will begin to continuously record the video feed from any camera with an associated detector in alarm. This way the 10 minutes prior to the alarm condition as well as the event itself is not lost and can be later reviewed. The operator can also switch to the live video from another camera to get another view of the situation if necessary.
SCENARIOS
There are multiple fire alarm scenarios where a camera integrated with an optical flame detector could prove very beneficial: Scenario One: An optical flame detector detects a fire, an alarm is sounded back at the main fire alarm control panel, and the live video feed from the appropriate CCTV camera automatically maximizes on the CCTV monitor. The operator looks at the live video and concludes that a fire is present and activates the fire suppression system for the area in alarm. The operator continues to monitor the situation to be sure the suppression system is affective and does not require any additional action to be taken. Scenario Two: Same as scenario one, but the operator does not decide there is sufficient evidence of a fire from the live video. The operator chooses to dispatch someone to investigate further, all the while monitoring the live video from the control room. This way the operator still has the option of instantly responding if the situation suddenly escalates. Scenario Three: Same as scenario one, but the operator concludes that the situation requires a more aggressive response than just activating the local suppression. For example, the operator could immediately call the local fire brigade rather than waiting to see if the suppression system can extinguish the fire. Once the fire brigade arrives on-site, the operator can direct their response to the fire using the live video available in the control room. Scenario Four: Same as scenario one, but the fire suppression system activates automatically with fire alarms signal, and extinguishes the fire. While watching the situation on the CCTV monitor, operator sees that the fire has reignited. This gives the operator the opportunity to manually activate reserve fire suppression system for the hazard (assuming there is one) and try to extinguish the before it escalates into a more dangerous event. the the the fire
Regardless of the scenario, a live video image gives operators and fire service personnel valuable information so they can respond to the situation in an informed manner.
CONCLUSION
A combined flame detection/CCTV system has many merits. The live video information supplied enables an immediate decision to be made without wasting time thus reducing the risk of an escalating event. This capability helps to minimize lost production and damage to equipment while maximizing the safety of personnel.

What is the xWatch? The xWatch is a high resolution color camera in an explosion-proof enclosure used for visual alarm information. The xWatch can be used alone or incorporated into any of the X-Series flame detectors. What does the xWatch actually see? The xWatch incorporates a 90 degree lens using ambient light to see in the exact area that the X-Series flame detector sees. When installed on the X-Series detectors the camera is factory aligned to match the detectors field of view. What type of camera output does the xWatch have? The xWatch is available with either NTSC or PAL format to output. Most surveillance systems only provide for a single format for the complete system, so NTCS and PAL can not be intermixed. The xWatch has a swappable camera module that makes for simple conversion between formats. How is the xWatch powered? The stand alone version of the xWatch requires 24 vdc to power the camera. The integral models are powered by the common 24 vdc power to the X-Series detector. If the xWatch is being used to view alarm conditions it should be powered from the back up power supply. How is the video connected? The xWatch has terminals to which a set of twisted pair wires are connected for the video output signal. The twisted pair can be converted to whatever type of monitor required. A typical installation uses active transceivers to convert the twisted pair to a BNC connection. How far away can I wire the video connection? The xWatch video signal is limited by many factors: wire size/quality of the twisted pair wires, shielding and conduit can reduce the distance of the maximum wire run. A passive transceiver will work with up to 1000 feet of twisted pair, while an active transceiver will work beyond 2000 feet of twisted pairs. Use of shielded and non-twisted pair wiring will cause degradation of the video signal and a substantially limited wiring distance. Actual distance should be checked on existing wires when retrofitting to the xWatch. What is a surveillance CCTV system? The main function of a CCTV system is to permit remote viewing of multiple cameras at a central location for surveillance. The system is configured with cameras, transmission lines, video switchers/recorders, and monitors. The system can have a frame rate of 30 frames per second to as low as 2 frames per second depending on the resources available to transmit the video. A system can be configured to record the images of an event upon an alarm signal or operator control.

Can I connect the xWatch in an Ethernet TCP/IP configuration? Yes and no. The xWatch is always connected with twisted pair wires to the CCTV system. The TCP/IP network connection is from the CCTV system. Ethernet based systems can also use gateways to provide Internet/WAN network connections. What are the CCTV system command and control requirements? Most surveillance systems use proprietary Graphical User Interface (GUI) software that is designed for stand alone operation of the system. The xWatch has been successfully integrated with the NetVision System to provide the GUI for the fire and gas system operational requirements. How can I retrofit an xWatch in place of a C7050 ultraviolet flame detector? The retrofitting of a C7050 ultraviolet flame detector is as easy as removing the power and signal wires from the detector controller and removing the tube module. The camera module plugs directly into the existing C7050 housing without any modification to the existing wiring at the device. Finally, connect the signal wires to the CCTV system. How do I adjust the camera position to center the picture? The camera module has horizon lines molded into the housing, by simply loosening the set screw the camera can be adjusted for the correct orientation. Can the xWatch be used as a general surveillance camera in non-hazardous applications? Yes. However it is typically price prohibitive. What is the warranty of the xWatch? The xWatch has the standard Det-Tronics one year warranty.
