Socialising
Australians enjoy informal socialising, and will host social functions such as dinners, barbeques or parties. Sometimes it can be BYO which means bring your own drinks or meat for a barbeque or bring a plate where each guest brings a plate with food to share with others. Although some Australians are vegetarians and vegans, and others belong to religious minorities that observe dietary restrictions, most Australians are not. Some may be uninformed about the dietary requirements of Muslims. If you have been invited to someones house to eat, it is a good idea to gently forewarn your host with the halal requirements you observe and/or offer to bring something to eat and share. Vegetarian options are usually available at restaurants, but be aware that these may sometimes contain alcohol.
Drinking alcohol is a common part of socialising among Australian adults, including in homes, at pubs and bars, as well as with dinner at restaurants and informal gatherings at work, such as after hours at the end of the week. It may help to decide ahead of time the level of comfort you have with being in the presence of alcohol-consumption, to help decide the types of events you wish to attend or decline. Australian culture and etiquette www.dfat.gov.au/facts/people_culture.html www.immi.gov.au/living-in-australia/chooseaustralia/about-australia/au-customs
Australia has no official state religion and people are free to practise any religion they choose, as long they obey the law. Australia is a predominantly Christian country, with around 61% of all Australians identifying as Christians. However, most other major religious faiths are also practised, reflecting Australias culturally diverse society. Australians are also free not to have a religion. About 20% of Australians indicated on the most recent census that they have no religion (this includes atheists and agnostics). www.dfat.gov.au/aib/the-land-and-itspeople.html
Clothing
The types of clothing that people wear reflect the diversity in Australian society, the social situation and variations in the weather. There are no laws or rules on clothing. Monash respects different cultures and styles of dress. Students generally wear casual clothing on campus. It is common for male and female students to wear jeans, t-shirts and jumpers. In the summer, students dress for comfort and can be seen in dresses, skirts, singlet tops and shorts. Australians are expected to wear certain clothingstylesin work situations. Most workplaces have dress standards but this varies on the type and location of the work undertaken. Outside the work situation, clothingstyleis a personal choice.
Gender equality
Australia does not practice gender segregation in comparison to some Muslim countries. As mentioned previously, men and women shake hands and there is no sexual inference in this type of mild touching. Australian values and laws affirm gender equality. The Sex Discrimination Act 1984 prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex, marital status, pregnancy or potential pregnancy in a range of areas of public activity, including work, accommodation, education, the provision of goods, facilities and services, the activities of clubs and the administration of Commonwealth laws and programs. In a 2012 global survey, Australia topped a list of 128 countries for womens access to education, equal pay, childcare and anti-discrimination policies.[1] In addition, legislation is now in place to make it easier for men to be involved in family and caring responsibilities.

Equal opportunity
Australians believe in equal opportunity. In Australia there are laws that protect people from unlawful discrimination based on:
race, colour, national or ethnic origin, nationality sex or gender, lawful sexual activity, sexual orientation, marital status, pregnancy or potential pregnancy, breastfeeding, status as a parent or carer religious or political belief or activity, industrial activity age, physical features, disability (past, present or imputed), medical record, or personal association with someone identified by reference to any of the above.
In Victoria, racial and religious vilification is also unlawful. Vilification is defined as a conduct that incites hatred against, serious contempt for, or revulsion or severe ridicule of another person or class of person on the grounds of their race or religion. If you feel you have been sexually harassed or treated less favourably on the basis of one the attributes listed above, the University has an Adviser Network where you can seek advice. We prefer you let us know if you are dealing with a problem. The University provides online equal opportunity training material for students studying at Monash. It is free of charge and you are most welcome to log in as a Monash student and complete the session. www.monash.edu/equity-diversity/ discriminationharassment/onlinetraining/ index.html Monash Equity and Diversity www.monash.edu/equity-diversity Discrimination and Harassment Adviser Network www.monash.edu/equity-diversity/ discriminationharassment/contact-anadviser.html
Discrimination is when people are treated less favourably on the basis of one or more of the attributes listed above. Sexual harassment is a form of unlawful discrimination and is against the law. It is any conduct of a sexual nature, which is unwelcome and in the circumstances is likely to cause someone to feel offended, humiliated or intimidated.

Schools
In Australia, there are both government and private schools. Government schools throughout Australia provide quality education for everyone in the local region, irrespective of their means, religion or background. Although government schools are free to Australian citizens, fees are charged for children of international students. If you have a sponsorship or scholarship from the Australian Government (e.g. the AusAID or IPRS) you will not have to pay school fees for your children at government schools. Private schools charge all students fees regardless of their citizenship status.

Halal food
Halal food products in Australia
Many grocery items available in Melbourne shops and supermarkets are halal. The best way to check if processed food is halal is to see if it is certified by the Halal Certification AuthorityAustralia. It can be useful to look at the labels of food products. The ingredients and food additives are usually listed on the label. Sometimes additives are represented by a number. A description of these additives can be found on the following websites. www.foodstandards.gov.au/consumerinformation/additives/ Halal products www.halalsquare.com.au www.halalhelpline.org
