The Wilderness Basics Course

AN ONGOING HERITAGE OF EDUCATION, EXPLORATION AND PRESERVATION

Do you lack the experience and knowledge to venture into the wilderness? Do you want to improve your current wilderness skills, explore new areas and meet fellow hikers?
Then do what several thousand others have done over the past 40 years; let the dedicated, experienced, volunteer staff of the Wilderness Basics Course (WBC) help you achieve a better understanding of how to enjoy and explore the wilderness. The comprehensive course consists of lectures, demonstrations, films and slide shows on such subjects as selecting the proper equipment, food preparation, filtering water, clothing, animal encounters, map and compass use, physical conditioning and first aid. The course also includes five outings held every other weekend to such places as Anza Borrego Desert, Jacumba Mountains, San Jacinto and the Mammoth mountain areas. Through the outings, students learn how to car camp, backpack and even to camp in the snow, and will have a choice of learning either snow-shoeing or cross-country skiing. The WBC is designed for both beginning and experienced backpackers, with each student being given a choice of approximately 20 different trips to choose from for each weekend outing. The trips are divided into categories, from easy to extremely challenging, making sure that each student is able to find a trip that matches their physical abilities. To help students get in shape before the outings there are conditioning day hikes as well. WBC students are also eligible for discounts on equipment purchased at several local retailers. The WBC is offered only once a year to both members and non-members of the Sierra Club at two locations: the Scottish Rite Center in Mission Valley and San Pasqual High School in Escondido. The San Diego classes are held every Tuesday night for 11 weeks, starting January 2lst, from 7 PM to 9:30 PM. The cost of the course is $95 (cash or personal check). Students are encouraged to pre-register, by calling (858) 272-9229, as the class is limited to the first 300 students. On-line registration for the Mission Valley course is also available at www.wildernessbasics.com starting on September 1, 2002. Students may also register on the first night of class. For information on the class being offered in Escondido please call (760) 728-8220 (different starting dates).

Come join us to learn about exploring our wilderness areas. Be a part of our ongoing heritage!

FOSTER LODGE: YOUR MOUNTAIN CABIN

BY

BOB SPAHLE

Did you ever dream of having your own cabin in the mountains? The one nestled in the pines at 5,500foot elevation? The one where
you can see Mt. San Jacinto in the distance as you lie in your hammock? The one where you cook
Thanksgiving turkey on the grill out on your deck? The one where you teach the kids to cross-country ski on one of the snowy winter weekends? The one where you sing holiday songs around the huge Ben Cartwright fireplace? Well, your dream came true! As a Sierra Club member, you are part owner of a mountain cabin! Its called Foster Lodge. The San Diego Chapter of the Sierra Club owns two cabins in the Laguna mountains, where members have enjoyed the outdoors since 1952. And how much would you expect to pay for a weekend in a place like that? $150? $100? At least $50? Guess again. You can spend the weekend at Foster Lodge for only $7.00! Thats right, seven bucks! This has to rank as the best entertainment bargain of the century. Location! Location! Location! Foster Lodge is in the Laguna Mountains, only an hour away from San Diego. Check out the Foster Lodge ad in this publication of the Hi-Sierran (p. 30) for directions, pictures and rates. You can also check out the lodge on our website at sierraclub.org, then search for Foster Lodge. Foster Lodge makes a great home base for a drive to Julian; a hike on the Pacific Crest trail; a short trek to Foster Point, with its spectacular desert view; or a jaunt to the Laguna Lakes in the meadows across the road. Twice a year a Holistic Weekend is held at the Lodge to rejuvenate body and mind. The Sierra Club also hosts a Nature Knowledge Workshop and Wilderness Basics Course event at the Lodge. Throughout the year, the Lodge is filled with events, live music and smores around the campfire. Private Parties! You can rent the large cabin for get-togethers with family and friends, holiday, birthday or anniversary parties, weddings, church events, school

trips, club meetings or any other special event. Call Dianne Pietila at 858/274-3100 for information or reservations. Volunteers are us! To keep the rental rates at such a reasonable price (mostly 7 bucks a weekend), volunteers do all of the maintenance. If youve ever thought of helping out the Sierra Club, the Lodge is a wonderful place to start. Numerous times a year, the Foster Lodge Committee organizes work parties at the cabins. We always need volunteers to join in the fun. We provide delicious meals, and you provide the elbow grease. Not only do you get the fulfillment of volunteering for a good cause, but you also meet new friends in the great outdoors. The Lodge can use your help at the upcoming work parties scheduled for September 14-15 and November 9-10. Currently, there is an opening on the Committee for a Maintenance Chair to help out on projects. (The salary isnt great, but the benefits are unbelievable!) If you are interested, call Bob Spahle at 619/224-8990 for more information. Wanted . . . Hosts! Hosts Wanted! Either way you say it, the Lodge welcomes new people to join our host staff. You can be in charge of the cabins on a weekend, similar to a Bed & Breakfast situation. The only difference is we provide the beds, and visitors provide their own breakfast (lunch and dinner, too)! The best part is that as a host you stay free for the entire weekend, and you get your very own private host room! Host training is available twice a year to familiarize you with the cabins and your duties as a host. Dont hesitate to call

our Host Scheduler, Susan Parrish, at 619/478-5188 to get the scoop. Foster Lodge Committee meets at 6:00 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month at the North Clairemont Recreation Center at 4421 Bannock Avenue to plan events and organize maintenance activities. Come on out to see what we are all about. Just call Mary Eggen at 858-4531615 to R.S.V.P. Newsletters are published by the Foster Lodge Committee every quarter. These newsy little marvels of modern journalism keep us all informed of the latest and greatest happenings at the Lodge. To get your name on the mailing list, contact our publicist, Carol Ray, at 858-274-5374 or e-mail her at [email protected]. Donations? you ask. Of course! The Lodge can always use donations. Since the Sierra Club is a non-profit organization, all furnishings and maintenance are paid directly from fundraising events and rental fees. If you have building materials or gently used furniture in good condition, Foster Lodge will put them to good use. Contact Mary Eggen at 858-453-1615 to make arrangements.
This is just a glimpse of what Foster Lodge has to offer you, your family and friends. When work and the pressures of life in the fast lane get to you, or you just want a quick out-of-town get-away, remember that peace and serenity are not far away. Come on up to relax in your hammock and enjoy the best that nature has to offer in your very own HS mountain cabin!
