Figured World: A Figured World Is Like A Large Community That Has Its Own Ideas

Figured World: A figured world is like a large community that has its own ideas, beliefs, and goals. These concepts are portrayed through a specific type of communication within the figured world. Actors and artifacts make up a figured world or a distinct community. Figured worlds have specific characteristics in their actors and artifacts that create distinction from other figured worlds. The figured world I have chosen to observe is the last three movies (last one is in two parts) of the Harry Potter series: The Half Blood Prince, The Deathly Hallows Part I, and The Deathly Hallows Part II. Specifically looking at three scenes when Horcruxes are found. The goal in this figured world is to escape death and to survive when the enemy, Lord Voldemort, attacks. This figured world is not that of a real world; it is a magical world at a school that teaches students how to perform magical tasks (Hogwarts). The school, Hogwarts, has four different Houses and each House would be its own discourse community (Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, & Hufflepuff). Each of these houses has their own goals and ideas as far as the ultimate goal of survival for the figured world, but the movies focus mainly on Gryffindor and Slytherin. Within these three movies I will choose specific scenes that are occurring at different times or events. If the scene is in the middle of the day, then usually the three best friends (Harry, Hermoine, and Ron) are travelling to different destinations or finding information they need; they are considered the protagonists. The nighttime is when more creepy and deadly events occur. Many events can occur during any time in this figured world; fights, deaths, travel, confrontation, but tension is especially high at night time. In this figured world it is acceptable to use your wand to perform magical spells. It is also acceptable to cast spells when in danger or harm. Loud noises can be a distraction or surprising, but are expected it in many events that occur in this figured world because the protagonists are major targets of Voldemort and his army. Most forms of communication are in person (face-to-face). Use of letters is also an acceptable means of communication. It would be inappropriate for one to use their wand or any kind of magic in the real world (Muggle World). Actors: An actor can be defined as someone trying to fit in; one that cannot be themselves so they must act another way to get by. An actor has its own specific reasons/goals they must achieve in their figured world. I have chosen Harry and Dumbledore to observe because they are not only major actors in this movie, but in the entire series. - Harry Potter: The main character of the entire series, and is considered the the one due to the fact that he survived as an infant against the enemy, Voldemort; student that attends Hogwarts school of magic. He is meant to be the main tool to defeat Voldemort. - Dumbledore: Headmaster of the School of Magic, Hogwarts; most powerful wizard to live. Seen as a respectable adult in Harrys eyes, Dumbledore must ask Harry to help him complete his goal to get the horcrux.
Kripa
Voldemort: The enemy; the wizard who used his powers for the bad; out to kill Harry Potter and anyone else who comes in his way. Killing is nothing to him because he is full of evil and is obsessed with gaining power/being the most powerful wizard. - Ron Weasely: One of Harrys best friends, Ron plays an important role as a supporter and unintentionally comes up with helpful plans. - Hermoine Granger: Harrys other best friend; Hermoine is the brains of the trio. She knows different spells and tactics to get through confrontations. - Dalores Umbridge: A professor who attempts to take control of Hogwarts and later on, the Ministry. She is evil and possesses one of the horcuxes. - Goblin: Helps the trio gain access to Bellatrixs safe that possesses the gold cup (a horcrux). - Bellatrix: A follower of Voldemort, one of his key helpers; she strives to defeat anyone who comes in her way and she would kill Harry herself if she could. She is a crazy, creepy witch that is also not phased by cruel killings. Artifacts: An artifact could be a physical object or an idea; something that can be used as an example that describes a figured world or discourse community. Artifacts are significant because they aid actors with their goals and beliefs within the figured world. - Wands: Human actors in this figured world have wands that help them cast magical spells. In this scene, the actors wands help them by providing a source of light and also a means of escape from the cave. - Horcruxes(7): These are key items throughout the entire series, they are the seven objects that each contain a seventh part of the enemys soul (Voldemorts soul). I have chosen to observe scenes that all involve finding a horcux. - Boat: Provides a mean of transportation to the other side of the large pond where the horcrux lies. - Bowl of Poison: The poison protects the horcrux and must be drunk in order to be removed from bowl. - Shell: Must be used as a drinking tool to drink the poisonous liquid. - The Sword of Gryffindor: One of the two things that can destroy a horcux. If the sword cannot be used, a Basilisks fang must be used. - Cloak of Invisibility: a large piece of fabric that is told to be made from Deaths cloak himself; when one is covered by the cloak, he/she becomes invisible. Discourse Communities: Within figured worlds, there are discourse communities that are groups of actors that share a common belief or goal. - Harry and Dumbledore: Both actors have the goal to retrieve the horcrux and leave the cave safely. Capturing the horcrux is important to them because when it is destroyed, it will help them defeat the enemy. Communicate by talking to one another. - The Living Dead: Have the common goal to protect the captured horcrux and kill the ones who try to take it. Do not speak, but communicate with actions. - The Trio: (Harry, Ron & Hermione) Three best friends that tackle each task together and rarely individually. As best friends their common goal is to stick together and defeat the evil in this figured world (specifically Voldemort).
Kripa
Voldemorts Army: Voldemort and his other evil wizard friends that are out to get power and defeat Dumbledore and anyone who tries to stop them. Gryffandor: This is one of the main four houses of Hogwarts that is considered the good group of students. Their goal is to defeat evil and the enemy, Voldemort. Slytherin: One of the four houses of Hogwarts that is considered the evil group of students. They like to make snarky remarks and to defeat the Gryffandor house. Some students help Voldemort.
Literacy Practices: Literacy has many characteristics such as reading, writing, changes in society, communication within writing and speech. Making use of these characteristics would be defined as literacy practice. - Dumbledores Demands: Dumbledore must demand things of Harry such as, following his orders no matter what circumstances arise. This is an important literacy practice because it shows Harry the seriousness of the situation at hand. - Harrys Obedience: Harry must obey his professors orders not only because he is unaware of the severity of the situation, but also because he is the apprentice of Dumbledore. As a means of respect and trust, Harry must obey Dumbledore. - Hermiones Intellect: Hermione is the brains of it all, she reads and studies a lot and gains knowledge about different spells. Her logic aids them in defeating Voldemort. The Observations: Observation One January 28th, 2014 Time: 6:00PM-6:35 Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince Horcrux Scene *No specific time is given in the actual movie, the times given are just what time I thought were the times Description of Location: This scene is located in a deep dark cave that has a large pond that must be crossed in order to locate the horcrux. The little land that is in the cave is ice-like and cubicle. It isnt particularly slippery, but one must be cautious when walking on it. The actors must provide their own light using their wands. 6:00PM Harry and Dumbledore arrive on giant rocks in the middle of a large ocean in front of a huge entrance to a cave. In order to enter the deeper area of the cave, Dumbledore must cut his hand and wipe his blood on the sides of the rocks at the entrance of the cave. 6:02PM They have entered the deeper area of the cave and walk towards the large pond. This cave has an ice-like appearance. Dumbledore finds a large chain and asks Harry to pull it. As Harry pulls the chain, out comes an evil-like boat from under the
Kripa
water and approaches them. Both of them take the boat to the other end where the Horcrux lies. 6:10PM There is an ice block that looks like a bowl full of water and at the bottom of the water you see the horcrux necklace. Dumbledore already knows that the liquid is not water; it is something poisonous that can cause him to say and do a variety of things. He tells Harry to make sure the liquid has been drunk until the horcrux has been retrieved. 6:17PM Dumbledore takes the shell and takes his first gulp of the liquid, he already begins to lose control and does not wish to continue. Harry takes the shell and continues to feed Dumbledore (even if he tells Harry to stop). Finally all the liquid has been drunk and the headmaster asks for water. Harry sees they have succeeded and have captured the horcrux necklace. 6:27PM As Harry tries to use his wand to make water arise in the same bowl, the shell will not pick up the water. Harry walks to the edge of the icy blocks to retrieve water from the large pond. Suddenly, a creature grabs his arm and tries to pull him in. One after the other, creatures (the living dead) come and swarm Harry and pull him into the large pond. While Harry struggles deep in the water, Dumbledore reaches for his wand. 6:31PM Dumbledore uses his wand and casts a spell that uses fire to scare the creatures back into the water. Harry comes out of the water and they both climb into the boat to get back across the water. Observation Two January 29th, 2014 Time: 11:30-12:05PM Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince Horcrux Scene *No specific time is given in the actual movie, the times given are just what time I thought were the times Description of Location: This scene is located in the Ministry of Magic which is basically the Supreme Court of the figured world. Here that are many people around and various different offices. The main part of this scene occurs in the court room. To enter the Ministry, one must flush themselves down the toilet to basically transport. 5:30PM- Ron, Hermione, and Harry disguise themselves as adults who have permission to enter the ministry. In order to do that, they must drink a potion that contains a hair of each adult they are attempting to disguise as. They walk to the portal (restrooms that you flush yourself down to enter the ministry). Once they enter the ministry, they locate and enter the elevator. They see posters everywhere saying Harry Potter is Wanted. 5:38PM: In the elevator, a office member of the ministry asks Ron to go clean his office and Harry goes to Umbridges office to investigate. The three are split apart and
Kripa
Hermione must go down to the court to hear a case with the judge (Umbridge). Harry does not find the horcrux in Umbridges office and decides to head to the court room and runs into Ron who then joins him. 5:50PM: In the court room, the man that Ron is disguised as comes in to see that his wife is being questioned by the ministry about whether she is a witch or not. The apparent accusation is that she has stolen a witchs wand and is pretending to be a witch herself. Harrys disguise starts to wear off and he calls Umbridge a liar for the accusation. A man on the side announces that it is Harry Potter, and Hermione casts spells on him and Umbridge that basically makes them faint. Harry grabs the horcrux necklace off of Umbridge and the trio runs for the exit of the Ministry. 6:00PM: As they run, a man of the ministry board chases them to the portals. Each of them enter a portal, but the man joins the same portal Ron goes through. This causes Ron to be splinched (severely injured), but they end up in a safe environment.
Observation Three January 30th, 2014 Time: 9:30-10:07PM Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince Horcrux Scene *No specific time is given in the actual movie, the times given are just what time I thought were the times Description of Location: This scene is located in Gringotts bank of the figured world. The actors are to take a mine-like train to Bellatrixs account which is full of gold. They have to trick a dragon to cross over to her door and to escape. The account/safe is full of gold items that duplicate when touched. 9:30PM Hermione and Ron use the same potion to disguise themselves as Bellatrix (Voldemorts biggest helper) and just another random assistant. The Goblin is on Harrys back, and they use the Cloak of Invisibility to hide themselves. The goal was to get into Bellatrixs bank account. The Head Goblin became suspicious, but Harry casted a spell on him that made him loopy. 9:37PM The bank accounts are basically deep inside a mine-like environment. To get to Bellatrixs stash, they have to take a long ride down the railroad tracks. After some twisting and turning, they final arrive to Bellatrixs safe. 9:45PM They dont exactly stop right in front of her safe, they must first get passed a fire-breathing dragon. The head Goblin uses a toy to distract the dragon to allow them to cross to the entrance of the safe. They open the safe and as they enter they see tons and tons of gold. At the top of a large pile of gold, they locate the golden cup that is a
Kripa
horcrux. Harry begins to climb the pile and they realize that the golden items multiply every time they are touched. Everyone stays put as Harry climbs to retrieve the horcrux which falls down the pile and lands in the goblins hand. The goblin says Harry must give him the sword if he wants the cup, so they trade. The goblins leave Ron, Hermione and Harry stuck in front of the safe and no way to cross the dragon. 9:57: The two Goblins escape, and the trio must escape the dragon. They run around and hide behind poles to stay safe from the fires. They being to panic and try to think of an idea. Hermione makes a drastic plan and jumps onto the Dragon. Harry and Ron follow along and also jump onto the dragon. Hermione shoots a spell at the dragons tail to make it climb the top and escape the bank. The dragon struggles, but eventually they escape from the bank and fly to a safe environment again.
Interview One Harry Potter 01-30-2014 Interviewing Harry Potter: 1. How does it feel to be the one to go with Dumbledore to retrieve a dangerous horcrux? I felt scared, but more honored because he is one of the greatest wizards of all times. I look up to him and he is my mentor. I was scared, because I knew we were dealing with dangerous things, but I also knew with him around I would be protected. 2. Tell me about your relationship with Professor Dumbledore and how he has impacted your life. Our relationship was that of a mentor apprentice relationship. He taught me many things and gave me great advice that helped me in the long run. I had a lot of trust in him and knew that he had a good reason behind every action he made. He has saved me from Voldemort various times and has taught me to become a stronger wizard because he knew I would eventually have to face the enemy. 3. How do you think things would be if Dumbledore was still alive and helped you find the other horcruxes? Finding the horcruxes with Dumbledore would have made it easier to defeat Voldemort. Also, Voldemort is definitely scared of Dumbledore due to his power, so ultimately the process of defeating evil would have been easier or quicker.
Kripa
4. Give an example of a weakness Voldemort has and how do you plan on taking his weaknesses to your advantage? Voldemorts weaknesses are ones he has made himself: the horcruxes. Each horcrux is a part of Voldemorts soul; therefore, if my friends and I destroy each horcrux, we will essentially weaken him. 5. How would your life be if your parents were still alive? If only your dad was alive? If only your mom was alive? I would be like any ordinary wizard that would eventually be trapped in Voldemorts hell hole because him killing my parents was what motivated me to have revenge. If my dad was only alive, we would both work together to defeat Voldemort for my other. Same thing if only my mother was alive, we would collaborate and destroy Voldemort.
Interview Two Harry Potter 02-01-2014 Interview of a Fan: 1. How did you feel when Dumbledore died? How could things be if he lived? When Dumbledore died, I was shocked and heartbreaken. I thought the story line would fade because he was such an important role in not only in Harrys life but all the of the students of Hogwarts. He was the one true person that Voldemort was afraid of, and the fact that he would be no more made Hogwarts a vulnerable environment to attack. If Dumbledore lived, Harry would have felt more secured and if he needed help, Dumbledore would be able to help him find and kill the horcuxes. 2. Tell me about your feelings towards Snape at the end of the 6th movie. The last movie? Towards the end of the sixth movie, I had lost all my faith in Snape because he was such an important character. I thought he was true to Dumbledore, but he ended up betraying his and Harrys trust by killin him. By the last movie, I felt and immense amount of love and respect for Professor Snape because I realized how much he still loved Harrys mother and how much he had done to protect Harry (he followed all of Dumbledores orders). 3. Give an example of when your faith was restored in one of the characters? My faith was restored in Ron when he returned to Harry and Hermione and 7 part 1. Even though he had a lot of familial duties, he remained a loyal friend to Harry and Hermione when they needed him the most. 4. How would you have gone about Harrys situation if you were in his position when we went to the forbidden forest to face death? I would have definitely been more scared. He showed a lot more bravery and courage for taking one for the team by giving up his life to save the
Kripa
Wizarding World. I would have tried to fight back one last time rather than just standing and letting Voldemort attack me. 5. Give a few examples of other characters who played heroic roles that were not recognized as much. Neville Longbottom is definitely a heroic character because he defeated one of the strongest horcurxes (the snake), which allowed for Harry to defeat Voldemort once and for all. If he had not completed this task, Voldemort would still have been living.
