Using Traffc Information
Using Traffc
Information
Your nvi can receive FM TMC (Traffc
Message Channel) traffc or MSN

Direct traffc content, depending upon
the traffc receiver connected to your
nvi.
Your nvi displays both types of traffc
content in the same manner.
NOTE: Garmin is not responsible for
the accuracy of the traffc information.
Understanding FM TMC
Traffc
The FM TMC traffc receiver, which
is integrated in the power cable, is
included in some nvi 755, 765, and
775 packages. FM TMC traffc receivers
receive traffc information that is
broadcast over the FM Radio Data
System.
The FM TMC subscription activates
automatically after your Garmin GPS
device acquires satellite signals while
receiving traffc signals from the service
provider. You can add other FM TMC
subscriptions at any time. Check the
Garmin Web site at www.garmin.com
/fmtraffc for other available services.
Understanding MSN

Direct Traffc
The MSN

Direct receiver, which is

integrated in the power cable, is included
in the nvi 785 packages. MSN Direct
receivers receive MSN Direct content,
including traffc information.
For information about activating MSN
Direct service or using MSN Direct,

The traffc receiver and nvi must
be in data range of an FM station
transmitting traffc information.
NOTE: Heated (metallized)
windshields could degrade the
performance of the traffc receiver.

Traffc in Your Area

When you are receiving traffc

upper-left corner of the Map page. The
traffc icon changes color to indicate
the severity of traffc conditions on
your route or the road you are currently
travelling.
Severity Color Code

Using Traffc Information
Traffc on Your Route
When calculating your route, the
nvi examines the current traffc and
automatically optimizes the route for
the shortest time. If a severe traffc
delay occurs on your route while you
are navigating, the nvi automatically
recalculates the route. You might still
be routed through traffc if no better
alternative routes exist.
If a non-severe traffc delay occurs on
your route, the traffc icon shows how
much time the delay has added to your
route. This time is already included in
your estimated arrival time.
To manually avoid traffc on your
route:
1. On the Map page, touch the traffc
icon.
2. Touch Traffc On Route.
3. Touch the arrows to view other traffc

Frequency Selection Tips
For best results, select a frequency below
90.1 FM.
When searching for an appropriate FM
frequency on your FM stereo, look for
an unused frequency that has steady,
consistent static. If you hear slight noises
and sounds in the background of the
static, select a different frequency.
As you travel, you might need to change
the frequency for the FM transmitter.
A frequency not used by a radio station
in your area might be used by a station
elsewhere.
FM Transmitter
Information
The FM transmitter is intended to
transmit the audio from the nvi to your
FM stereo.
Do not adjust your FM settings while
you are driving your vehicle.
The distance between the vehicle power
cable, the nvi, and the FM stereo
antenna may also affect the noise level.
Vehicles with antennas located far
away, such as a rear-mounted antenna,
may experience more interference from
outside noise sources than vehicles with
front-mounted antennas.
As you drive, you may notice changes
in the background static even though
there is no FM station using that
channel. You may notice this as you
drive through intersections where certain
kinds of traffc lights or other municipal
electronic systems are operating. You
might also notice this effect when the
terrain changes, allowing distant stations
to be received by your car stereo that
were not received when you made your
initial frequency selection. These and
other sources of electrical interference
may make it necessary to look for
another frequency.
