Oral presentations 2
The skill of making oral presentations in English is very important. This is something that you
will probably have to do many times in your professional and academic life, not only as the
task for your English courses.
Oral presentation is a form of oral communication. There are many different forms of oral
communication (conversation, dialogue, debate, small talk, monologue). Some are rather
organized, others are spontaneous. (For instance, small talk talking about small topics,
in order to maintain social communication.) Some take at least two people, some even more.
Only the monologue is just one person speaking for quite some time. In the oral presentation
too, there is (usually) one person speaking but this is different than the monologue. It is well-
organized and it addresses a particular audience with a particular purpose.
It is important to know that in the oral presentation, there are several factors that influence
what it will look like. The presenter must know all of them and adapt her/his presentation to
the different parameters.
|LearningObject|5
Some major factors include:
1. WHO is doing the presentation, one presenter or several of them?
2. WHAT is s/he talking about, what is the content of the presentation?
3. TO WHOM is s/he talking to, who is the audience, general public, professionals, close
colleagues, ?
4. WHY is the presentation made to inform about something, to invite to action, to persuade
?
5. WHERE does the presentation take place in a small or large conference room?
6. WITH WHAT MEANS is the presentation made just orally or you include some visuals and
extra materials?
7. HOW do you make the presentation?
For this class, this is one of the most important factors, because the answer to this question is
that you make the presentation in ENGLISH.
There some important steps before you start preparing the presentation itself.
Check to be sure you know all the factors!
They ALL have effect on you presentation
In is not the same to talk about your project to a few colleagues in the classroom or to an
international committee judging it!
The question HOW to make presentations in English has two parts:
1. How do you organize your content? It must be done in a logical order, brief but detailed
and efficient.
2. How do you organize your English? It must be done in understandable (though not perfect)
English, with correct words and phrases, put together effectively.
I How to organize the content?
A good presentation has these parts:
Introduction
Development (main part, body)
Conclusion
In the introduction:
1. Introduce yourself
2. Start with an interesting statement, citation, joke, picture in order to get the audiences
attention
3. State the title and the topic (longer than the title, explanation, brief elaboration)
4. Say briefly why you talk about this (to inform, to persuade, because of the special interest
of the topic, )
5. For longer presentations, outline the sections in the main part
Steps 1 and 2 are optional, depending on the situation.
In the main part, development, body:
1. Organize the facts and ideas in a logical order
2. Describe parts, components, steps, ideas, arguments, etc
3. Describe their function
4. Describe their potential use and importance
5. Mention why this is relevant to the audience
|LearningObject|6
Note: This is only a suggestion.
The actual body of your presentation depends on the content you want to present. It is
different when you describe an experiment that your team has made or when you argue
against media piracy!
In the conclusion:
1. Summarize the main points of your presentation
2. Dont introduce any new facts
3. Invite the audience to think about it, or discuss, or react (buy your product)
4. Thank the audience
Steps 3 and 4 are optional and depend on the situation.
II How to organize your English:
Decide on the level of formality (formal, informal, neutral)
The safest is neutral
Depending on the topic and the audience, it can be:
a bit informal (tell a joke or an anecdote, directly address the audience, even use some
slang). You could do this when doing an oral presentation for your team and a few other
colleagues.
more formal (use impersonal language, use formal vocabulary)
Some useful phrases:
For the introduction:
In this presentation I am going to talk about
This presentation deals with
The topic of this presentation is
OR: It can be some interesting question or quotation, but use it carefully!
For defining, describing
X is (general word: device, process) that/which (specify what it does, looks like, is used
for)
Use relative clauses
Use phrases for describing functions
Use logical sequencers:
for temporal order (to begin with, first(ly)
for addition (and, also, moreover)
For the conclusion:
In conclusion,
To conclude,
As you can see
Finally, here is what can be your instruction kit for making oral presentations. Of course,
always have in mind the concrete situation.
1. Check the factors that determine the presentation (picture) and decide what is appropriate
in YOUR situation
|LearningObject|7
2. Organize your content, make notes, preferably in English
3. Make sure that you know all the IMPOTRANT words in English (check the dictionary if you
have to)
4. Write down some important and complex sentence structures that you will use
5. Check the pronunciation of all the words you are not sure about
6. Prepare the extra material, visuals, handouts and check spelling
7. Practice your oral presentation, to check the time (dont make it shorter or longer!), and to
check your performance.
8. Dont worry if you make mistakes in English!
9. Relax before you start and do your best!

Zakljuak Lekcija 14

even some complex ideas in a clear and concise manner. We hope that the presentations in
