Back to the Glasshouse!
May is one of the best months for flowers inthe glasshouse here in England. Thankfully, this last winter was much kinder than theprevious one so heating bills were much lower.I always look forward to March when thesunshine starts to feel warm on my face andthe daytime temperature in the glasshouseregularly rises above 20°C. We had anunusually warm and sunny March this year, followed by the weest April on record! It is a maer of judgement as to when to startwatering your cacti. I usually begin with heavysprays and start watering the pots when theplants are showing signs of expansion orgrowth. I do this when we have the first periodof bright weather at the end of March but someyears it can be mid-April. It is important not toleave the so-bodied South American genera(Rebutia, Gymnocalycium, Parodia etc) dry fortoo long, since they can struggle to becomecompletely turgid as the temperature climbs. Ileave watering Mexican cacti a lile longer andsome, such as Ariocarpus and other sensitivegenera, until May.Again, I am very grateful to the authors whohave taken the trouble to write articles for the
Cc Ee
. We have a good selection, although I would have liked to publish moreabout the other succulents. It appears thatmore people are visiting habitats, and many ofthese travels are in search of succulents, so Ihope to have more reports of these in future. The
Cc Ee
team is pleased thatrelationships are now being established withother societies around the world. We are, forinstance, exchanging advertisements so thatour readers can see other organisations whichmay have a publication of interest. We want to make the information in the
Cc Ee
available to as manyreaders as possible. If you are responsible forthe production of a journal and would like toreproduce one of our articles, then please ask.As long as the author and photographersagree, then there should be no problem ingranting permission. The reproduction inanother language is especially welcome. If you go to the download pageyou can now download an index to the Cactus Explorer. Theindex is the cumulative index of all foureditions published to date. I am very gratefulto Roy Moram for compiling this usefulindex. Now that the growing season has arrivedhere, I suspect that I shall receive less articlesfor the next issue. Please don’t be disappointedif the August issue is smaller. Unlike printed journals, we do not keep articles ‘in stock’ sothe size of individual issues will vary.Of course, over the coming months, you maywell see flowers on unusual cultivated plants. Please send us your digital pictures, with orwithout text, for use in our ‘In the Glasshouse’feature, although it could be in your garden ifyou are lucky enough to have a suitableclimate! The editorial team thanks you for yourcontinued interest and hope that those of youliving in the northern hemisphere have a goodgrowing season.
