&an3in( *ector
&an3in( sector plays an important role in the economic development of the country.
ommercial ban3s are one of the vital aspects of this sector, )hich deals in the process of
channelisin( the available resources in the needed sector. It therefore acts as an intermediary
bet)een the deficit and surplus (roup of the financial resources.
"inancial system contains t)o components vi2. depository and non>depository financial
institutions. ommercial ban3s and finance companies are the e4amples of the depository
institutions )here as Employee +rovident "und, 'evelopment &an3s, Insurance ompanies,
etc. are the e4amples of non>depository financial institutions. The study in this report is
concerned )ith the depository financial institutions i.e. #imalayan &an3 $td. "inancial
institutions play an important role in the proper functionin( of the economy. These
institutions act as an intermediary bet)een the individuals )ho lend and borro) financial
instruments. These institutions ma3e the flo) of investment easier.
'evelopment of &an3in( Industry in Nepal
$i3e other countries (oldsmiths, merchants and moneylenders )ere the ancient ban3ers of Nepal.
Te1arath Adda established durin( the tenure of the then +rime Minister Ranoddip *in(h /:F??
&.*0 )as the first step to)ards the institutional development of ban3in( in Nepal. Te1arath Adda
did not collect deposits from the public but (ave loans to employees and public a(ainst the
bullion.
&an3in( in modern sense started )ith the inception of Nepal ban3 limited /N&$0 on :FF@<E<?G
&.*. Nepal ban3 limited had a #erculean responsibility of attractin( people to)ard ban3in(
sector from pre>dominant moneylenders net and of e4pandin( ban3in( services. &ein( a
commercial ban3, it )as natural that N&$ paid more attention to profit (eneratin( business and
preferred openin( branches at urban centers.
11
Government ho)ever had onus of stretchin( ban3in( services to the noo3 and corner of the
country and also mana(in( financial system in a proper )ay. Thus, Nepal Rastra &an3 /NR&0
)as set up on &.*. ;G:?.G:.:@ as a central ban3 under Nepal Rastra &an3 act ;G:; &.*. *ince
then, it has been functionin( as the (overnmentHs ban3 and has contributed to the (ro)th of
financial sector. The ma1or challen(e before NR& today is to ensure the robust health of financial
institutions. Accordin(ly, NR& has been tryin( to chan(e them and has introduced a host of
prudential measures to safe(uard the interest of the public. NR& is yet to do a lot to prove
themselves efficient supervisors. NR& really re.uires stren(thenin( their policyma3in(,
supervision and inspection mechanism.
Inte(rated and speedy development of the country is possible only )hen competitive ban3in(
service reaches noo3s and corners of the country. Keepin( this in mind, (overnment set up
Rastriya &ani1ya &an3 /R&&0 in &.*.;G;;<:G<:G as a fully (overnment o)ned commercial ban3.
As the name su((ests, commercial ban3s are to carry out commercial transaction only. &ut
commercial ban3s had to carry out the functions of all types of financial institutions. #ence,
industrial development center /I'0 )as set up in ;G:? &.*. for industrial development. In ;G:D
&.*. I' )as converted to Nepal industrial development corporation /NI'0. *imilarly,
a(ricultural development ban3 /A'&0 )as established in ;G;@<:G<GE &.*. to provide finance for
a(ricultural produces so that a(ricultural productivity could be enhanced by introducin( modern
a(ricultural techni.ues. Moreover, security e4chan(e center )as renamed Nepal stoc3 e4chan(e
in :FFG.NE+*E opened its tradin( floor on :? Banuary :FF@.
Iith the establishment of R&& and A'&, ban3in( service spread to both the urban and rural
areas. NR& also (ave incentive to N&$ to e4pand their branches to rural areas. This helped the
common people reduce their burden of payin( hi(her rate of interest to moneylenders and
absolved them from 3o)to)in( before moneylenders. It is natural e4pectations of customers
)hich 3eep on increasin(. !nce they (ot ban3in( services, they )ere e4pectin( improvement
and efficiency. #o)ever, e4cess political and bureaucratic interference and absence of modern
mana(erial concept in these institutions )as hurdle in this re(ard. &an3in( service to the
satisfaction of customers )as a far cry. The inception of Nepal Arab &an3 $td. /renamed as
Nabil &an3 $td. on Banuary :, ;GG; A.'.0 on ;G@:<G?<;F &.*. /Buly:;, :F9@ A.'.0 as the first
1oint venture ban3 to be a milestone in the history of ban3in(. Nabil &an3 (ave a ne) ray of
hope to the slu((ish financial sector.
12
The very mar3etin( concept of Nabil &an3 forced the other ban3 in operation to be more
customers oriented and led the influ4 of commercial ban3s. #avin( observed the success of
Nabil &an3 based on mar3etin( concept and also because of liberal economic policy adopted by
the successive (overnments, follo)in( commercial ban3s came into bein(.
&ecause of hi(her return on investment and lo)er capital re.uirement, entrepreneurs )ere
interested in settin( up ne) ban3s includin( branches of forei(n ban3s. #o)ever, current
political and economic scenario of the country coupled )ith ne) prudential norms of Nepal
Rastra &an3 and stiff competition may ma3e the entrepreneurs (ive a second thou(ht to the idea
of establishin( ban3s.
ommercial &an3s
ommercial ban3s are the ma1or components in the financial system. They )or3 as the
intermediary bet)een depositors and lenders and facilitate in overall development of the
economy, )ith ma1or thrust in industrial development. In modern time, commercial ban3s, )hich
are facilitated, re(ulated and supervised by the central ban3, confine them and concentrate in
their activities of fulfillin( needs of their customers.
Modern commercial ban3s can be identified by different name such as business ban3s, retail
ban3s, clearin( ban3s, 1oint venture ban3s, they all perform the same basic function i.e. they
provide a lin3 bet)een lenders, those )ho have surplus of money and do not )ish to spend
immediately )ith borro)ers, those )ho do not have surplus money but )ish to borro) for
investment in productive purpose. &asically, by char(in( a rate of interest to borro)ers sli(htly
hi(her than they pay to lenders, the ban3s ma3e their profit. This is 3no)n as financial
intermediation.

Remittances
Remittance in simple )ords is the transfer of the funds> a portion of mi(rant=s earnin(s from the
mi(ration destination to the place of ori(in. Remittance transfers may be
domestic or international. The term 5remittance6 is normally limited to denote monetary and
other cash transfers transmitted by mi(rant )or3ers to their families and communities. 'omestic
remittances occur, for e4ample, )hen there is mi(ration from rural to urban areas )ithin a
country. *imilarly international remittances are defined as cross-border person-to-person
payments typically recurrent in nature /e.(. )ho send money to their families in their home

The emphasis is on person>to>person payments rather than payments to purchase (oods and

Concl$sions
&y and lar(e, a proper mar3etin( plan, a better strate(y and a smooth implementation are the
basic in(redients of any successful business. *o to operate any profitable business, lots of
home)or3 should be done. *ince the future pro(ram of #&$, are .uite (ood so delay should not
be made.
34
The study is primarily aimed at assessin( financial aspects of the ban3. It has been found that the
ban3 has )idespread branches around the ma1or cities and has a pleasant (ood)ill that it has
created in the mar3et throu(h its operations. The findin(s of analysis can be concluded as belo),
The ban3 has unsatisfactory cash reserve ratio over the revie) period. #o)ever, )e cannot
conclude it as a setbac3 due to statutory re.uirement of maintainin( avera(e cash reserve ratio on
a )ee3ly basis of immediately precedin( fourth )ee3.
The ban3, thou(h able to collect sufficient deposit does not have satisfactory loans and advances.
Analysis of other ratios sho)s that the ban3 neither has been able to perform outstandin(ly, at
least )hen )e conclude on the basis of annual report, nor has to lament for )hat it couldnHt
achieve. #o)ever, it has been noticed that the ban3s performance, from the profit to return in
assets, has been slac3enin( and that it needs improvement in its due course of operations. &ut )e
cannot overloo3 the macro>economic conditions and instability of the current affairs. The
dividend payout ratio of the ban3 has not remained in the satisfactory level. The net profit level
of the ban3 has (one up considerably over the last fe) years of operation, )hich, if not tac3led
prudently, )ould obviously hamper its profitability. #ad it been able to administer and follo) up
the loan that it had dispersed and evaluate the proposals and its creditability thorou(hly, it )ould
not have to face problems li3e these.
There is hi(h prospective and (ro)in( mar3et for card business especially ac.uirin( business.
No)adays, people are bein( a)are about card facilities and the advanta(es of holdin( a card,
)hich is (radually pro(ressin( in industriali2ation process and increasin( income level amon(
the hi(her and middle class society. *o the possibility of other ban3s and<or financial institutions
enterin( this field should not be i(nored
35
onclusively, the ban3 has been able to produce satisfactory results over the revie) period
despite environmental adversities. Ihile )e relate the present economic condition )ith its
performance, )e )onHt have any other option in hand apart from praisin( it for )hatever it has
been able to reali2e.
Recommendation
Recommendations to t#e "ank
Nepal too needs to develop the ban3in( habit of its people. Ie 1ust cannot ma3e any more
unsubstantial and detrimentally indi(enous e4cuses.
&an3 should try to focus on customer satisfaction and relation
&an3 should search for ne) opportunities and (reater covera(e in remittance service.
&an3 should try to chan(e the employee behavior by introducin( the concept of
team)or3 and dele(ate them ade.uate authority to carry out their )or3.
&an3 should try to satisfy its customer by providin( them prompt service.
To improve the s3ill of ban3s employee re(ular s3ill development pro(rams should be
initiated and periodic s3ill test for the employees can be applied
*ince so many ris3s are attached )ith the credit card business, #&$ should develop
innovative and effective ris3 mana(ement pro(rams and services for its members, )hich
helps to maintain credit card operation at a hi(h standard and prevent the fraudulent act.
"or this purpose, #&$ should (ive 3no)led(e about credit card fraud to its customer and
should prevent them from fraud by usin( latest technolo(y. &ut #&$ should also balance
36
technolo(ical cost and its respective benefits. Thus +ublic a)areness of credit card fraud
should be (enerated to capture more mar3et for credit card
To encoura(e fre.uent usa(e of cards, #&$ can introduce the concept of re)ard points.
"or e.(., for cardholders, every :GG rupees )orth of purchases made throu(h the card, the
cardholder (ains one point. These points could be redeemed for (ifts, select product
purchases and even for payin( the annual fees. *o every point )ould be e.uivalent to one
rupee. This )ould encoura(e more use of #&$=s credit card.
&an3 should build the effective feedbac3 channel so that the ban3 can 3no) and ma3e
correction from the valuable su((estions and comment and, feedbac3 of the mar3etin(
activity (iven by the consumer.
Recommendation to Internship +ro(ramme.
This internship pro(ram is fruitful to the student of &&A as they (et chance to (ain practical
3no)led(e about the &an3s, )hich they have been studyin( in their course.
As internship pro(ram is must in &&A course, students must (et clear (uidance re(ardin( the
)or3 at &an3s. Many &an3s have misconception about the intern students as they 3eep them for
fillin( purpose, doin( photocopies, fa4 etc.
Thus internship of &&A pro(ram should clearly specified alon( )ith the )or3 that interns are
ou(ht to do. It should specify that )or3 of any interns should be related )ith ban3in( activities
as they enter a ban3 to (ain a practical 3no)led(e about a &an3s.
Internship is very re)ardin( to every student of this pro(ram. It )ould )or3 more effectively
and (ives positive result if it becomes more specific. It has become difficult to ban3 as )ell as
interns re(ardin( the activities they are supposed to perform in an or(ani2ation. *o if it becomes
37
more specific and defines the criteria )ithin )hich interns are ou(ht to do )or3 or the )or3s
&an3 could (ive to the interns then this internship pro(ram surely )ould help every intern to
(ain ma4imum practical 3no)led(e about &an3s.
Recommendation to "aculty of Mana(ement / T.7.0
"irst of all I li3e to than3 to the faculty of Mana(ement by providin( the chance to read the
&&A course under the T.7, reno)ned university in the )orld by sittin( in the country. They
provide us the facilities to do internship in the financial sector of the country for the practical
3no)led(e of the course and ma3e us easily sellable in the mar3et after finishin( the course.
Accordin( to the course of &&A )e need to fulfill the internship but the faculty doesn=t specify
ho) to do and )hat )e have to do in the internship period. *o not havin( the 3no)led(e of this
)e student faces many problem in the startin( phase of the internship period. &ut )e are
successful to ma3e them convinced about our re.uirement and fulfill the t)o months internship
period.
I )ould li3e to than3s to all the people )ho help faculty of mana(ement to brin( this fruitful
