Light Up Rotary
AUGUST - MEMBERSHIP & EXTENSION MONTH:
In Rotary Year, the month of August emphasize the importance of exciting and
effective service projects to help attract new members and retain existing ones.
The membership slogan Each Rotarian: Reach One, Keep One
emphasizes the need for Rotarians to focus on both recruitment and retention
in their membership growth efforts.
Reach one - because Rotary membership is by invitation, it's essential that
each Rotarian reaches out and invites someone to join.
Keep one because it's not sufficient to simply sponsor someone into Rotary;
ment in membership retention.
a Rotarian, one of our primary responsibilities is to help identify and propose new members.
interested in and committed to advancing the mission of Rotary. Together we can help our club fully represent commu-
vice.
Wishing you good luck in your membership endeavors.

PRESIDENTIAL MESSAGE
GARY C.K. HUANG
PRESIDENT 2014-15
AUGUST 2014
In Rotary, we mark August as Membership and Exten-
sion Month. There is a good reason why we remind
ourselves of the importance of membership early in
every Rotary year: because the job of growing our
membership is one that we can never begin too soon. It
is also a job that we can never stop working on. In or-
der to keep serving, Rotary always needs to be grow-
ing!
We have talked for many years about the importance of the family of Rotary. In this
Rotary year, I want to make not just the family of Rotary, but our own Rotary families,
a priority in our membership. After 37 years of following me in Rotary, my wife,
Corinna, finally became a Rotarian last year. We attended the chartering of a new club
in Taiwan together, and she said, "It's time for me to become a Rotarian too!" So she
joined that club. And soon, so did a lot of other people. Now that club has 102 mem-
bers, and it's the second-largest club in Taiwan.
Inviting our spouses into Rotary isn't just about getting our numbers up. It addresses
the reality that Rotary still has far more men as members than it does women, and that
is something we need to work on. When we bring more women into Rotary, our clubs
become more appealing to prospective female members and become more produc-
tive as well.
This year we are going to have something new in Rotary: a membership support team
pin. This means that if you invite a new member into Rotary, you get a special pin to
wear with your Rotary gearwheel. But we all know that the job of growing membership
doesn't end when a new member joins. It ends only when a new member is enjoying
being a Rotarian and never wants to leave! And making sure that our clubs are enjoy-
able places to be is a key part of growing membership.
People come into Rotary for all kinds of reasons, but they stay because Rotary is fun to
be a part of. So I want to remind all of you to have fun in your clubs and your districts.
Rotary is based on the idea that our service is more effective when we serve together
with our friends. So let's enjoy our Rotary service, share it with others, and Light Up
Rotary together!

MEMBERSHIP
You can keep your club and member-
ship active and thriving by:
-
- Finding new members
- Engaging current Rotarians
HOW STRONG IS MY CLUB?
Assess your club regularly to learn what works and what
doesn't. Ask yourself: Do your members reflect the diverse
professions and cultures in your community? Are you
club attractive to new members?
Use the
strengths. Find more ideas for evaluating your club in the
Strategies for Attracting and Engaging Members guide
HOW CAN I TAKE MY CLUB FROM GOOD TO
GREAT?
You can find ideas for energizing your club in Be a Vibrant
Club: Your Club Leadership Plan.
Your district leaders can also offer
solutions. Contact your assistant gov-
ernor, district membership commit-
tee, or district governor, if you feel
your club could use a boost.
HOW DO I FIND NEW MEM-
BERS?
Rotarians join and stay with their
clubs primarily because they seek
opportunities for community service,
fellowship, and friendship. Many of
the non-Rotarians you know are look-
ing for the same things. Invite them
to help with your service projects,
attend a networking night, or partici-
pate in a club get-together and help
them see for themselves how Rotary
connects leaders to make a positive change.
Here are some potential candidates to consider for mem-
bership:
- Friends and family members
- Business acquaintances
- Professional colleagues
- Younger community leaders who are already con-
nected to Rotary through Rotaract, RYLA, peace fellow-
ships, Youth Exchange, and other programs
Learn more in the Strategies for Attracting and Engaging
Members guide.
HOST AN INFORMATIONAL MEETING
You can share the benefits of joining your club by hosting
an information session for potential and new members.
Find ideas, along with sample formats, resources, and
worksheets in New Member Orientation: A How-to Guide
for Clubs.
PROSPECTIVE MEMBER INFORMATION SES-
SION
Invite club members to share their experiences, talk about
an overview of Rotary.
NEW MEMBER ORIENTATION
Help new members expand their understanding of Rotary
by hosting a series of information sessions. Suggested
topics include Rotary history, opportunities for service,
and The Rotary Foundation.
COURSES AND WEBINARS
Encourage new and existing members to take advantage
of the many resources available through Rotary to stay
current. Courses in the Learning Center and webinars
make it easy to learn at your own pace.
HOW DO I ENGAGE CURRENT MEMBERS?
Work hard to deliver an experience that will keep mem-
bers engaged and excited about Rotary. Successful strate-
gies include:
Regularly recognizing members for their achieve-
ments
Keeping members involved in club projects and ac-
tivities
Encouraging members to take on club leadership
roles
Sending out monthly email news-
letters
USE SOCIAL MEDIA TO AT-
TRACT MEMBERS
Is your club on Facebook? Is your
website up-to-date? Are you sharing
ties and projects with your commu-
nity? Having an active social media
presence can help attract new mem-
bers and inspire current ones. Find
ideas for developing your social me-
dia strategy and public images. (learn

ARMENIA RC YEVERAN PROJECT
Armenia-Norway Rotarian Friendship Bings Peace to Small Armenian Villages
The Rotary Club of Yerevan has a long history of partnership with Hamar Vest Rotaryklubb of Norway. In
2013, a flagship program was construction of over 2 km long water and sewerage water pipeline in the remote
Tatev village of Southern Armenia. The project brought safe and clean drinking water to the village high
school, ensured hygiene conditions for about 200 6-18 year old students, provided potable water to 40% of
the village population.

selected to promote api breeding and honey production. The project is implemented by the Rotary Club of
Hamar Vest Rotaryklubb of
Norway. The project provided each of the 10 families with four beehives, necessary toolkits and hired the best
api specialist to train the villagers in honey production. Berkaber is a mountainous village with rough terrain
and alpine valleys that make it perfect for honey production. The village lands are not good for agriculture and
The village will start harvesting honey in late July. Armenian and Norwegian Rotarians will spend two days
there in early October to celebrate the successful completion of the program and enjoy the delicious, organic
and ecologically clean honey. We invite all our Rotarian friends to join us for this adventure and enjoy this
mysterious country.
