RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
In this thesis, a rigorous research methodology is needed to acquire
data with its inherent complexity as an institution for scientific study and
discovery. Different methods of data collection should be used to gather
information.
In the unique scope of architecture in the field of astronomy, it is
advantageous to consider qualitative research methods and interviews which
allow the interviewed to communicate data and information comprehensively
to gather a holistic picture of the operation of facilities, particularly complex
astronomical and scientific instruments. Qualitative research methodology will
form the brunt of the research.
3.1. RESEARCH DESIGN
3.1.1. Descriptive
Descriptive research methodology is used for this study. The
thesis is based on facts from books, articles, academic journals, thesis
and other publications. The research is a comprehensive analysis
consisting of literature review on building astronomical observatories
and their guidelines on domes and telescopes, planetarium design and
construction, and the exploration of the concept of celestial ecotourism.
The literature review will provide for concise and comprehensive
guideline to planning and designing the architecture of the project in
both its research and educational facilities.
3.1.2. Historical
The research looks to historical sources in books, journals and
articles in understanding the topics concerning astronomy and its
history integral to the proposed museums storyline, and historical
records of astronomical phenomena applicable in the Philippine
hemisphere which dictate the proposals educational and research
centers year round schedule of activities and operations.
3.2. RESEARCH TECHNIQUES
3.2.1. Interviews
Qualitative research with interviews is advantageous in
gathering the most relevant data and information for the thesis
concisely. Interviews on learned personnel to gather recommended
requirements and design data on the many different astronomical
facilities and its instruments used in astronomical studies, and how it is
utilized so that the design of the new facilities may accommodate these
new improvements, if there can be improvements made.
3.2.2. Observation and Site Reconnaissance
The research looks to proper observation the existing site/s
present facilities through site visits and analysis to determine and
support the statement for its appropriateness or lack thereof. And
further site observation and reconnaissance for data gathering of the
proposed new site with analysis of site conditions, road networks,
proper site boundaries, terrain and topography.
3.2.3. Case Studies
Research of local and foreign best practices of similar building
typology are essential to the gathering of accurate and up to date
design data particularly in its need for designing and building
astronomical observatories, telescopes, planetariums, interactive
science centers and the new concepts of celestial ecotourism
architecture. The study of best practices provides factual and tested
references for the design of the project.
3.2.4. Research Participants
In the thesis focus on celestial ecotourism, the research will use
quantitative research methodology consisting of surveys to the
community to gather and support data on public interest in astronomy
related activities and particularly in the feasibility of astronomy themed
overnight camps and hotels and its potential.
