The purpose of this module is to provide Y-Cable protection for transponder cards such as the ONS15454 multirate and 10G transponders. This allows a path for the working client transmit interface to connect to the network in the event the opposite interface in the protection pair should fail. There are two versions of this unit, one for multimode applications (CS-MM-Y) and one for single mode applications (CS-SM-Y). Figure 1 shows the unit block diagram of the Y-cable protection module. When the module is used in the coupler direction, the individual signals enter the module from the CPL-RX ports and pass through a passive coupler to the CPL-TX port. When the module is used in the splitter direction, the signal enters the module from the SPL-RX port and is split through a passive splitter to individual signals to the SPL-TX ports. Figure 2 show the physical appearance of the ONS15216 Y-Cable Protection Flex Layer Module. Figure 3 shows how the module front panel ports are mapped and labeled. Figure 1 shows the physical appearance of the ONS15216 four channel VOA Flex Layer Module. VOA adjustment access is identified by VOA adjustment ports VOA 1 to 4 Adjust. Figure 2 shows the unit functional block diagram. The input signals always flow from the VOA#-RX ports to the VOA#-TX ports. The pound (#) in the previous name convention identifies the number of ports and is limited from 1 to 4. The input signals are attenuated by the manual adjustment of the VOAs that are placed between the input and output ports. Figure 3 shows how the module front panel ports are mapped and labeled. The VOA#-TX ports are mapped with the even ports from 2 to 8 and the VOA#-RX ports are mapped with the odd ports from 1 to 7. 34 2006 Cisco Systems, Inc. Al l rights reserved. Product Overview 36 Cisco ONS 15216 Optical Supervisor Channel (OSC-1510) OSC for Ethernet connectivity from NOC to each network device 1 RU, 19- or 23-in rack mounted Interface connectors OSC Add/Drop ports: West and East directions Monitor ports: West and East directions SC-type connectors The Cisco ONS 15216 Optical Supervisory Channel (OSC) 1510 allows communication to any site without the need for a functioning OADM, EDFA, or mux/demux at that site. This type of communication is established by removing the OSC signal from the composite DWDM signal before the composite signal passes through any other ONS 15216 equipment. The OSC signal is then added into the composite signal enabling Ethernet connectivity from the network operations center (NOC) to each device on the ring. The ONS 15216 OSC-1510 is a 1-RU 19- or 23-inch rack-mounted shelf assembly. To help with port identification and cabling, there is a retractable tray located under the front panel that contains a port layout diagram. The front panel of the OSC-1510 is shown in Figure 1. The OSC Add/Drop ports are used to pass through the OSC signals in West and East directions. Monitor ports in West and East directions are also provided so a user can check for the presence of the OSC channel in the composite DWDM signal. The ONS 15216 OSC-1510 uses SC-type optical connectors. 37 2006 Cisco Systems, Inc. Al l rights reserved.
