Welcome to Emtelle
Introduction
The history of Emtelle and the history of telecommunications display strong parallels: as the influence of telecommunications spread worldwide, we responded by expanding our global operations; as technology allowed users easier access to a wider array of information, we eased our own customers’ access to highly flexible networks; as telecommunications providers and users grew more sophisticated, so did our response to their requirements and expectations; and as the power and diversity of telecommunications technology evolved, our portfolio of products and services did more than keep pace – it led the way. For the last twenty-plus years, the world of telecommunications has inspired Emtelle to create innovative technologies, products and business practices. We’re committed to maintaining that win-win relationship with our customers far into the future, and back up this commitment with high-quality training programmes, ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001 and PAS 99 certification, and a Corporate Social Responsibility policy that details the company’s ethical responsibilities in all its activities.
Our core business sectors
Emtelle can point to many years of experience and success in its two core business sectors:
FttX
(Fibre-to-the-X), where our renowned air blown fibre technology is used in numerous high-bandwidth applications; and Infrastructure, where we deploy our ducted network solutions for Telecom, Power and Geothermal applications, among others. To maximise its impact in the global market, Emtelle has identified those areas of the world where activities in the above-mentioned sectors offer the greatest potential for development: North America, Continental Europe, the UK and the Asia Pacific region. Our objective is to intensify our activities in these regions, establishing ourselves as the company of choice by offering network solutions that optimise cost of ownership of the network and maximise both performance levels and revenues.
Infrastructure Solutions
For many years now, Emtelle has been manufacturing PVC-U (Unplasticised Polyvinyl Chloride) main duct and HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) duct- and sub-duct solutions for the Telecom and Power markets in the UK and Ireland. The PVC-U ducts are available in outer diameters (ODs) from 30mm all the way up to 250mm. The HDPE ducts (low, medium and high grade) are available in sizes from 3-250mm OD. Our larger-diameter ducts complement our product offering for the Telecom and Power markets. A full range of bends, connectors and ancillary products is available to meet all system requirements.
FttX Solutions
Emtelle’s passive infrastructure system has seen the company become the world leader in air blown fibre technology, with reputable references available from Singapore to Australia, Sweden to Greece, Mexico to the USA (see page 12 for a full list of Emtelle’s FttX global projects). Directly or indirectly present in all important FttX markets worldwide, Emtelle produces a very small, lightweight, yet extremely robust passive infrastructure system based on microducts, into which Emtelle-produced fibre units are later blown in.

– the optimal FttX solution
Easier, quicker, more efficient and extremely flexible
Air blown fibre (as used by Emtelle’s technology) is an integral part of FttX solutions. The strain-free method of installing fibre optic cables and fibre units in microducts relies on the flow of compressed air passing over the entire length of the cable to create a fluid drag, which gently carries the cable down the microduct. In addition, a set of rollers or a caterpillar drive typically pushes the fibre optic product into the microduct.Suitable for numerous applications and customers, air blown fibre has become the preferred installation method for those who value reliability, cost-effectiveness and flexibility. The development of air blown fibre has revolutionised the design of fibre optic products, resulting in a new generation of minicables that take up less room and need no heavy reinforcement. In addition, these developments have reduced the costs of the fibre products and the microducts into which they are installed.Emtelle’s air blown fibre system is suitable for a wide range of applications, including:• Fibre-to-the-Home• Multiple Dwelling Units (MDU)• In-Building• Fibre-to-the-Curb/Node• Campus/Business Park• Mobile Telephone Mast Connections• City/Metropolitan• Long-Distance • Telemetry and Intelligent Transport systemsThis diversity of applications is constantly growing, driven by the tremendous flexibility of and its ability to deliver scalable and reliable end-to-end solutions that financially benefit the network operator and investor. To explore the benefits of in greater detail, let’s focus on two applications where FttX technology is gaining ground worldwide:
Multiple Dwelling Units (MDU)
MDUs are becoming an increasingly large market segment for broadband services. In the USA, 25% of people live in MDUs; in Europe, the figure is 50%; in Latin America and Asia, more than 75%. Worldwide, there are currently 670 million MDU-based living units, a number that will only rise as populations migrate to urban areas. As well as encompassing a large array of building sizes and architectures, MDUs also involve a diverse group of stakeholders, including investors, operators, customers, installers and homeowners. Some of these groups will largely have shared priorities. For example,
investors and operators
will be looking for a broadband network that can: maximise revenues; minimise initial capital expenses and ongoing operating expenses.
Installers
will be more interested in the ease with which the infrastructure can be set in place, modified, maintained and expanded. And
customers and homeowners
will certainly want shorter installation times, minimal intrusion, solid safety assurances and aesthetically pleasing solutions. Uniquely among FttX technologies, Emtelle’s solution addresses every one of these issues, ensuring that the best interests of all stakeholders are – and continue to be – met.
Telemetry
Telemetry involves the long-distance monitoring and management of equipment used in, for example, wind farms and oil and gas pipelines. Its many benefi ts include improved security, faster response times, the more effi cient use of personnel, safer working conditions, minimal escape of harmful substances, and maximum effi ciency. Emtelle’s solution is ideally suited for telemetry applications. For one, optical fi bre can easily handle telemetry’s high-bandwidth demands, maximising network uptime and reliability, and reducing the need for the auxiliary power cables required for signal boosting. And thanks to new trenching technologies, network components can be in the ground much more quickly – a vital characteristic in these often time-critical applications. In addition, a report
1
showed that the long-term costs of Direct Buried Duct technology – as used with – were decidedly lower than other installation methods, taking into consideration the initial investment as well as events that happen over the network’s lifetime.
