1. How will ONGC use GATE
score?
ONGC will use GATE-2015 score for shortlisting of
the candidates, who have applied to ONGC to be
called for Personal Interview.

ONGC will get the GATE-2015 scores directly from
GATE authorities.

Only those candidates, who have appeared in
GATE-2015 exam in the relevant discipline and
simultaneously applied in ONGC, would be
considered for further selection process in ONGC.
2. GATE conducts its
examination in so many
papers. Will scores from all
the papers be considered by
ONGC?
No. The relevant subjects under GATE-2015 are
clearly mapped for different qualifications against
each post in the advertisement. Therefore,
Candidates possessing the essential qualification
for any post should take GATE-2015 exam only in
the subject mentioned against his qualification.

3. I am a graduate in Petroleum
Engineering and as per
advertisement; I will have to
choose either Mechanical
Engineering (ME) or
Engineering Sciences (XE) or
Chemical Engineering (CH).
Why is it so?
Graduate in Petroleum Engineering / Applied
Petroleum Engineering are essential qualification
/ Qualifying Degree for different advertised posts.
However, petroleum engineering is not one of the
subjects in GATE-2015. In order to give chance to
the candidates of Petroleum Engineering / Applied
Petroleum Engineering to apply to the posts in
ONGC, they are given choices of three subjects,
i.e., Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Sciences
and Chemical Engineering to appear in GATE-2015.
Hence, they may choose any one of the above
subjects to apply and appear in GATE-2015.

Likewise for the post of Transport Officer, Graduate
Degree in Auto Engineering is one of the
qualifications. Since, Auto Engineering is not one
of the subjects in GATE-2015, the candidates of
Auto Engineering qualification are required to
appear in Mechanical Engineering (ME) paper only.
4. When will ONGC Online
Registration commence?
ONGC online registration site will be activated
tentatively in January, 2015. The link for the portal
will be available on www.ongcindia.com under
career page.
The actual date of activation will be notified on
www.ongcindia.com in due course. Therefore, the
candidates who have applied for GATE-2015 to
apply for the posts in ONGC, are requested to visit
www.ongcindia.com regularly for updates.
5. I have appeared for my final
Semester / Year
Examinations and the results
are yet to be announced. Am
I eligible to apply for ONGC?
The eligibility and requirements of final year
students to appear in GATE-2015 is mentioned in
detail under Eligibility criteria in GATE-2015 online
brochure.

As far as ONGC is concerned, the interviews are
tentatively scheduled to be held in May, 2015.
Therefore, if the final year candidates apply and
are shortlisted, they must be in a position to
produce their final mark sheet / course completion
certificate at the time of interview.
6. I have completed 5 years
Integrated course i.e
M. Tech. Am I eligible to
apply?
If the qualifying degree / essential qualification of
the post which you intend to apply are Graduation
Degree in Engineering, then you should have got
B.Tech Degree in Engineering issued, on successful
completion of 4 years.
On the basis of your B. Tech Degree, you are
eligible to apply to the post.
7. I am a Departmental
candidate. Should I also
apply and appear in GATE-
2015?
Yes. Departmental candidates are also required to
apply and appear in GATE-2015 in the respective
subject. Though there is no upper age limit for
applying in GATE-2015, ONGC extends age
relaxation to Departmental candidates only to
the extent of their service rendered in ONGC
for enabling them to apply for the posts advertised.
8. Does one have to pay
separate application fees to
ONGC?
No. There is no separate application fee for
ONGC. Candidates are required to pay the requisite
fee for appearing in GATE-2015.

Details about GATE fees are mentioned in GATE-
2015 website. Information about GATE-2015 is also
available in website of 7 IITs (Bombay, Delhi,
Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras & Roorkee)
and also of Indian Institute of Science (IISc),
Bangalore.

I have completed B.Tech
degree in Production
Engineering. Can I apply to
the post of AEE Drilling
/Mechanical / Production?
No. candidate should have done Mechanical
Engineering only for consideration of the posts
where Mechanical Engineering is a qualifying
degree / Essential qualification.
Please refer the link Nomenclature of
Qualifying Degrees to know whether the
nomenclature of your degree will be treated as
essential qualification / qualifying degree for the
applied post.

10. How will a candidates
prepare for GATE-2015?
Subject-wise syllabus of GATE-2015 is available in
GATE-2015 brochure. It can be downloaded from
GATE-2015 websites.
11. I appeared in GATE last year.
Do I need to write GATE in
this again?
Yes. GATE-2015 score is the only valid score for
consideration for recruitment in ONGC.

Score from GATE-2014 or prior to that, will not be
considered by ONGC for its recruitment purpose.
12. I am a student of M.Tech /
passed M.Tech. During my
M.Tech admission, I
appeared in GATE. Will my
previous GATE score be
considered by ONGC?
No. ONGC will consider GATE -2015 score only. It
will not consider any previous GATE score.

13. Is there any upper age limit
for appearing in GATE?
No. GATE does not have any upper age limit.
However, ONGC has prescribed age limit for the
advertised posts.

As on 01.01.2015, the candidates should not have
crossed the upper age limit as mentioned in the
advt.,

Relaxations in age as prescribed by the Presidential
directive of Government of India will be extended
to other category candidates.
14. Is there any minimum % of
marks requirement for
appearing in GATE?
No. GATE does not have any % of marks
requirement.

However, ONGC has prescribed that those who
have secured minimum 60% or above marks in
the qualifying degree are only eligible to apply for
any post covered under this advertisement.
15. I have scored more than Calculation of percentage of marks in the qualifying
65% marks in my final
semester and the same is
mentioned on my degree by
my institute. However the
totalscore for all the
semester as a whole is less
than 60%. Which of the score
shall be considered by the

However, if the institute/ university declares that
you have 65% only in your last semester or a
qualifying statement similar to this, then we shall
consider the aggregate marks in all semester for
calculation of CGPA or % of marks.
16. Are there any physical fitness
criteria for appearing in
GATE?
No. GATE does not have any physical fitness
criteria; but ONGC has.

The candidates wish to appear GATE for
requirement in ONGC only must see the Pre-
Employment Medical Fitness Requirement of
ONGC before proceeding with the GATE application
process.
17. I am writing GATE only for
recruitment in ONGC. If I
want to change my GATE
examination venue or want
to correct a mistake in GATE
form or if I face difficulty in
downloading my GATE admit
card with registration
number, whom should I get
in touch with?
You have to get in touch with GATE authorities.
ONGC does not have any control on conducting
GATE examination. Any thing pertaining to GATE-
2015 examination requires to be dealt with GATE -
2015 authorities only.
18. Can I apply to ONGC before
I download GATE admit card?
No. GATE admits card will have your GATE
registration Number. You have to apply to ONGC
with GATE registration number. Otherwise we shall
not be able to retrieve your GATE Score.

ONGC does not have any other way to track down
a candidate and retrieve his /her score from
database provided by GATE other than his / her
registration number. Hence, all candidates are
advised to be doubly sure that they are entering
the right GATE-2015 registration number while
applying in ONGC.
19. Where the university does
not give percentage and only
gives letter
grades/CGPA/OGPA etc.,
how to fill-in the % of marks
in the on-line application?
The grade/CGPA should be converted into % as per
conversion formula applied by the
Institute/University for awarding class/division. In
case of non-availability of any such formula, ONGC
will have the liberty to convert CGPA into % by
applying its own procedure.
20. I am not sure whether I fulfil The onus of proving that you are eligible to get the
the criteria for getting benefit
under OBC category. What do
I do?
concession for belonging to OBC (non-creamy
layer) rests on you. Couple of suggestions:

a. Checkout the latest central list of OBCs
published by the National Commission for
Backward Classes (NCBC). The relevant link

llt. For getting the benefit of reservation, the
casts/subcaste/community essentially has to
be in central list. If the caste you belong to
appears in a state list but not in the
centralist, you are not eligible for getting the
reservation benefits.
b. Be very sure that you do not belong to
creamy layer. Your OBC certificate must have
a clear mention that you belong to non-
creamy layer.
c. OBC certificate has to be as per proper
format prescribed by Govt. of India. In case
your certificate is old and not as per format,
please get a new one issued by a competent
authority.

At any of recruitment process or at any stage after
that, If it is found out that the candidate has
obtained reservation benefits by submitting
False/incorrect certificate /information, he / she
will be terminated from the service of ONGC
immediately.
21. Who is entitled for
relaxation/concessions
admissible to people with
disabilities (PWD)
candidates?
Persons with disability of 40% or more will get the
benefits admissible to PWD candidates. It is
necessary to have a valid disability certificate
issued by the Medical Board constituted for the
purpose and duly countersigned by the Competent
Authority (Medical superintendent/CMO/Head of
hospital etc.)

Candidates whose degree of disability is less that
40 are not entitled for any concessions admissible
to PWD candidates.
22. My name on GATE
applications mentioned as
Gupta S.K. while in my class
X pass certificate the same
has been mentioned as Sunil
Kumar Gupta. Please advise
One has to essentially mention the same name in
your GATE application and application to ONGC. In
case, there is a mismatch in names (including the
way it is written) in GATE/ONGC application with
that of a document like class X/XII/graduation
mark-sheet, the onus will be on the candidate to
