JOURNAL WEEK 6

This was a busy week for the school as it was due to school Merdeka
celebrations activities. Thus, lessons were only conducted thrice throughout the
week and the rest were brought forward to the following week. There were lots of
activities and performances held such as dancing, catwalk modeling, drama and
choir. I was impressed with the pupils as one of the groups which participated in
the competition was from my class.
Looking at my students, they were so active getting themselves involved
in the activities. From there, I started to reflect, why was it sometimes during my
lesson, they were so passive and feeling reluctant to get themselves involved in
the activity? That was a big question mark for me throughout the whole week. I
tried to figure it out the causes on my own with some questions stuck in my mind.
Were my lessons not interesting? Were my lessons too much beyond their
proficiency level?
From the activities they had participated in the competition based on my
observation, I realized and noticed that the pupils were motivated to learn
something when there is a competition among group work. Focusing on this point,
I tried to flashback some of my lessons where it actually involved group work as
well as competition, pupils were eager and excited to learn.
Perhaps for the rest of my two weeks here, I should have done more small
competition among the pupils in order to motivate them to learn. Barely reading
text and answering questions on task sheets are just too mainstream and boring
for the pupils. Teachers of the new generation like us should be more attentive,
caring and creative in designing and implementing lessons and activities so that
pupils can actually learn under non-threatening atmosphere and thus, they would
be more developed in terms of social and emotional intelligence, which is also in
line with the principles mentioned in the KSSR curriculum.
