Stewardship 2014: Building for Our Future
In the Gospel according to Luke, J esus tells his disci-
ples a parable to show them that they should always
pray and not give up.
We are called by J esus to pray and not lose heart. We
must not lose heart that we can affect change, both
here at St. J ohns through our gifts of time, talent and
treasure, and in the wider world through our outreach
efforts, and our support of our diocese and the national
church. This is especially true as we write the next
chapter in the history of St. J ohns beginning this
fallas we seek to build our future together.
J esus concluded this parable by asking, When the
Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth? Each
fall, as we consider our financial pledge for the com-
ing year, we have the opportunity to look in the mirror
and ask ourselves, are we living our faith?
One of our stewardship objectives this fall is to en-
courage each of us to remember that God loves us,
and all that we have comes from God, with the recog-
nition that our pledge is merely a symbol of that
awareness. We are also seeking to discuss the im-
portance of our mission here at St. J ohns and the
return of faith your dollars provide, as part of a faith
-based conversation that discusses why we giveand
how it can move us closer to the life and practice of
J esus.
The noted Christian stewardship expert Charles
LaFond adds, Our pledge to the church is our way of
being in community with each other. Our pledge is our
way of showing God that we are grateful for all God
has given us. Our pledge is our contract with Goda
way of being released to spend the rest of our money
joyfully.
A pledge is also our commitment to one another. Our
pledge, our profession of faith, builds upon the gifts of
those who came before us. It paves the way for those
who follow us. Who is St. J ohns Episcopal Church?
Its you and its me. Thats who our dollars support.
We need not bear the burden alone, however, if we
strive to maintain a vibrant and thriving ministry, oth-
ers will join us. If we build it, they will come.

All Saints Day is November 1st
Many parishes celebrate All Saints on the first Sunday
of November, this year it is November 2nd. There are
many layers of celebration that day. We remember all
those who have passed on in the last year. We remem-
ber the Saints of the church and we remember those
around us who have shown through their lives their
Christian faith. Have a discussion with your family
who might be someone they would consider a present
day saint and what would be some qualities they
might feel a contemporary saint might possess.
Stone Soup is Coming!!
Stone Soup is coming on November 23rd. Once again
our church school will host coffee hour by making
stone soup. We will learn the origins of the stone soup
story, the story of the Feeding of the 5,000. Please
join us as we feed all by sharing what we have.
Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service
Tuesday, November 25, 2014
St. Johns Church @ 7:30 p.m.
A joint choir from St. J ohns and North Congrega-
tional will enhance our worship. Attendees are
asked to bring an offering of canned goods to be do-
nated to local food banks, which clearly needs even
more help than usual in these difficult times. Baked
goods for a reception following the services are ap-
preciated. This is a wonderful time to get together
with our neighbors to celebrate Thanksgiving.
Please contact the office for more information.
