Introduction

1.1 Biography of Author

Theres no biography available about the lives of the writers of
Tuhog so this is just a brief introduction or facts about them.

Tuhog was written and directed by one of the most formidable

director Veronica Velasco. Velasco has always found humor in the
cruelty of fate. Her films have always been grounded on premises
where an act of fate results in absurd and sometimes torturous
scenarios that test the limits of humanity. In I Do (2010), the dream
wedding of two teens is constantly delayed by occurrences beyond
their control, pitting their youthful love against youthful impatience.
In Last Supper No. 3 (2009), a props-man turns into the butt of an
overextended joke when he misplaces a wall dcor he borrowed from
an opportunistic family for an ad campaign, forcing him to experience
the frustrating inanities of the Philippine judicial system.

Veronica has also directed in numerous Maalaala Mo Kaya

episodes like Birth Certificate, Wheel Chair (II), Ketchup and many
more. In the movie Tuhog (2013) Veronica worked alongside with
Jinky Laurel in making a masterpiece. Jinky Laurel is known for her
works Tanging Yaman in 2010. She was involved in different movies
of the famous movie sequel Shake, Rattle, and Roll.
The movie Tuhog shows diversity in Filipino films. It is not our
typical Filipino film since it doesnt have a happy ending which is
common for Filipino films. They showed exemplary work in writing the
story which tackles about life and as well as death. Tuhog was made
in the 21st century, when people lose their faith not only to the
government but as well as to themselves so it is just fitting for the

present time since it gives the viewers extra ordinary lesson about
taking chances and following their hearts, things that many of us
cant do because of losing faith to our abilities and fear dominates us,
were afraid of what could be the possible outcome of our actions and
decisions.

1.2 Summary of the Movie

An accident occurred in which a bus crashed into a barricade
made of steel bars that changed the lives of three people Fiesta, a
middle aged woman, Caloy who wants to preserve his virginity for
his girlfriend who lives far from him, and Tonio, a retired old man
who wants to pursue his dream to be a baker and have his own
bakery. The three caught themselves stuck in a single steel bar
due to the accident they met and they have no idea on what will
happen to them next.

Fiesta is a bus barker who works at Janus Express. Her mother

left them when she was still young, and being the only child, she
was left with the responsibility of taking care of her alcoholic father.
Because of that responsibility and her devotion as a daughter, she
cant find a time to actually take care of herself and find someone
to love. What made it more difficult is that her father scares away
all the men who are trying to be closer to her and want to be with
her. But a guy named Nato turned her world around and changed
her life to the extent which she didnt even imagine. She finally
found someone who she thought would stay by her side and make
her happy. But then Fiesta found out that Nato already has a
family. Nato insisted that all that happened in the past between his
wife and him are all gone and that he wants to be with Fiesta. But
Fiesta does not want him to turn his back on his daughter, for she
knows how painful it is to be left by someone you sincerely love.

She didnt even tell Nato that she is pregnant with their child.
Before the accident occurred, Fiesta and Nato had a fight. Nato
told her that no one will ever love her and that he was the only one
who did but all she has done was pushed him away.

Caloy is the typical teenager who has raging hormones and is

experiencing hunger for new experiences. He has a girlfriend
named Angel who lives far away from him. Caloy and Angel
promised to give up their virginities to each other but because of
the long distance relationship and Caloys doubt about Angels
faithfulness to him, he broke his promise and gave up to another
girl. Little did he know that Angel already broke their promise as
well and gave up to her friend Jun Rey.

Tonio is a retired man who despite of getting past his prime still
wants to pursue his dream of being a baker and put up his own
bakery. His family is not entirely supportive of the dream he finally
wants to make come true. His daughter and son-in-law want to
borrow money from him but he refused to lend them. His family
thinks that it is very foolish of him to do the things he wants when
hes already so old and weak. He spent a lot of his money from
retirement to buy a place and equipments but he found it hard to
actually bake. Just like other people who are determined, he tried
his hardest until he successfully made his favorite bread pandesal.
And just when everything was falling into its place, Tonio
encountered a terrible accident.

The hospital has two operating rooms meaning only two persons
can live and to be able to make that happen one must sacrifice
his/her life. Fiesta has the smallest chance of surviving. She was
already having contractions and they have to get the child out of

her or else both of them will die. Fiesta told the doctor that he had a
miserable life and she wouldnt want her child to have the same life
she had. The doctor told her not to worry for he will take good care
of the baby. Being at ease and peace, Fiesta died with certainty
that her child will never have to experience the same fate he had.
Caloy and Tonio survived and continued their lives fully.

Analysis of Elements

2.1 Setting
The incident happened in the morning while Nato was driving.
They were brought to the hospital where the reminiscing took place
and the story of each individual was revealed.
They were riding a bus which the Janus Express owns and were
heading to different places. But because of a child who tried to
cross the street, Nato lost his control of the wheels and one thing
led to another, they clashed into the barricade of steel bars.

2.2 Characterization
Fiesta is a middle aged woman who takes care of her alcoholic
father. She has terrible luck in life and finds it hard to have time for
herself. Maybe because of the circumstances in her life, her self
esteem was not built strongly. She has a phobia; whenever a store
closes she gets afraid because she remembers her mother leaving
her in the store. She is a tough woman but is weak when it comes
to her love ones. The last thing she wants to worry about is her
own happiness for she is a very selfless woman. Any man would
be lucky to have a woman like Fiesta. She shows the personality of
very few Filipina women who are still conservative and a loving
daughter despite all the hardships, a woman who thinks of other

peoples happiness more instead of her own. Shes every mother

who would sacrifice her life for the life of her child.
Tonio is a persevering man who didnt find a time to make his
dream come true when he can still work his hardest. He had past is
prime so his family did not really believe that its still work the shot
of putting up a bakery. But he is very determined and do not want
to die without making it all come true. He has a strong personality
and represents the people who, despite of being late, still has a lot
of tenacity to make things happen. He is a risk-taker and a dream
believer.

Caloy is a young man who has raging hormones. He has a

relationship with Angel who lives far away from him. Because of the
long distance relationship, they found it very difficult to keep their
promise of preserving their virginities and giving it up to one
another. Caloy is the representation of every teen that cant control
their urges. Teenagers like Caloy and Angel exist in the present
times and sadly they are what we consider as the common
teenagers of todays. It is normal for teenagers to have urges since
they have developing bodies and they are yet to discover their true
selves. The hormones give feelings that sometimes a teen cannot
control.

Nato is the new driver of Janus Express who then changed not
only Fiestas life but as well as the two other protagonists. He is a
charming young man who fell in love with Fiesta. The problem is he
already got a wife and a daughter although hes already separated
to them and truly loves Fiesta. He represents men who I consider
weak. walang paninindigan as what Filipinos call. Men who are
despise for turning their backs on their obligations to their wives

and children, a failure as a husband and a father. A lot of men

today are like Nato. They chose to find their happiness and
became selfish to their families who they left waiting for them.

2.3 Conflict
They met an accident that put their lives in jeopardy. They were
stuck in a single steel bar. Nato was driving the bus they were in
although Nato still has a hangover for he and Fiesta had a fight the
day before the accident occurede. Caloy was chasing after Angel
who saw him with a girl who opened the door with just wearing a
shirt and underwear. Since Angel is in the other bus Caloy keeps
on calling her until Nato got carried away and lost his temper with
the other bus driver. A boy tried to cross the street and Nato lost
his grip on the wheels and maneuvered the bus into the barricade
made of steel bars. The three caught themselves penetrated by
one of those steel bars. The problem is that the hospital has only
two operating rooms meaning one of them are not going to be
operated and will die.

2.3 Ending
Fiesta has the smallest chance of surviving because the steel
penetrated and damaged her heart. She is pregnant with Natos
child and shes already having a contraction. Tonio told the doctor
that if one of them must die, it should be him since he had already
lived long enough but the doctor told him that he has more fighting
chances and that they can still save him. Caloy also insisted that
they should operate Fiesta first because hes stronger than Fiesta
and that he could wait for the operation to be done, but the doctor
told him that he will die because of bleeding if he doesnt get
operated soon.

When Fiesta and the doctor were the only ones left in the room,
Fiesta asked the doctor about her child and about what will happen
to the baby shes carrying. She told the doctor that she had a hard
life and that she doesnt want her child to experience the same
hardships she has experienced. The doctor told Fiesta not to worry
for he will take good care of the baby. And so Fiesta accepted her
death and told the doctor that she could die.

Caloy and Tonio were saved and Fiesta died. Tonio have
successfully put up his bakery while Caloy finally made up with
Angel.

Implication
Dont fear dying, for death is where the value of life comes from.
All of us dont have exemption of dying and because we are aware that
we will die one day, shouldnt this give us the reason to actually live? If
you know how short your life is, shouldnt you chase for your dreams
with more and love more? If you know that your life is almost over,
shouldnt you fight for you to live longer?
We dont have a do ever in life and we dont always avail second
chances. We need to make our dreams come true now for life is too
short to make more mistakes. When you are lying on your death bed,
the scariest thing is not dying but regretting. All the what ifs and why
didnt I haunting us is the worst feeling in life.

People must follow their dreams and chase hard for it. Do not apply
for the work you dont love, you wont be successful in it anyway since
success comes after love for your work. Do not go for a course you
dont like, you wont pass it anyway since achievements come after
love at what you do. We dont always realize these and the few people

who did, attain not jut success and achievements but most importantly,
happiness. And I think thats what people should aspire for, what
people should look for, true happiness. A lot of people may be
successful but not all of them are happy.

We must all live as if we are dying and die as if we have fulfilled our
lives fully and happily. Tuhog slapped me the reality of how short life
actually is and how I should make the most out of it. I think I have my
new dream now, a dream that other think is foolish but what I think is
right. I want to be happy and I want to attain my dreams. Right now I
think Im on the right path chasing my goals in life. Someday I will
make it all happen and hopefully, in my death bed someday I wont
have any regrets and what ifs.
What and if are two words non-threatening as word can be, but
put them together side by side and theyd have the power to haunt you
for the rest of your life.
