NOVEMBER 2014
WELCOME!
Dear Parents,
When it comes to education, we know you want the best for your children.
And when it comes to public schools, parents in Washington, DC, have some
tremendous choices. Like traditional schools run by DC Public Schools,
charters are public, tuition-free, and open to all District residents.
Both traditional and public charter schools are committed to quality
education. The difference is that traditional schools are run by a central
authoritythe chancellor of DC Public Schools. In contrast, public charter
schools are run by nonprots, under agreements approved by the DC Public
Charter School Board (PCSB).
Public charter schools are located throughout the city and focus on providing
quality education. Based on student progress, parent satisfaction, and student
achievement, we rate most public charter schools as Tier 1, 2, or 3, with Tier 1
being the best.
Different charters use different approaches to learning. Some use very
structured educational environments. Others focus on language immersion,
blended learning, Montessori, expeditionary learning, adult education programs,
and more.
Please use this book as a guide to nd the best school for the students in your
family. You can pick the public charter school that meets your familys needs,
even if it is located beyond your neighborhood.
Please visit the schools youre interested in, meet the teachers,
and stay involved in your child's education.
Sincerely,
Scott Pearson
Executive Director,
DC Public Charter
School Board
EARLY
CHILDHOOD
& ADULT
EDUCATION
Early childhood and adult education schools
worked with PCSB to develop the academic
metrics included in the PMF. The Early Childhood
PMF measures student progress and achievement
in reading and math. The Adult Education PMF
measures program effectiveness by tracking
student progress, student achievement, and college
and career readiness.
To learn more and see performance results on
early childhood and adult education public
charter school programs, visit data.dcpcsb.org
or dashboard.dcpcsb.org.

HOW DO I FIND A
SPACE FOR MY CHILD?
DC public charter schools are public, tuition-free, open to all students, and
do not have selective entrance requirements. They offer District families a
wide variety of educational choices. They are independent from the traditional
public school system. The DC Public Charter School Board oversees, but
does not manage, the schools. The Board uses a Performance Management
Framework (PMF) to rate a public charter schools academic performance,
and places each charter school in one of three performance tiers:
Tier 1 (high-performing), Tier 2 (mid-performing), or Tier 3 (low-performing).
