Due to popular demand, Francis Roads returns for another of his courses on West Gallery
Music. The music is joyful, rewarding and easy church music, sung in town and country during
the 18th and 19th centuries to whatever instrumental accompaniment might be available.
Francis Roadss course is especially suitable for singers who feel that they need practice
in holding a part, and players of wind and bowed string instruments who would welcome
ensemble experience. West Gallery music will be of special interest to choirs looking to
expand their repertoire with straightforward but rewarding material

Francis Roads studied at Pembroke College, Oxford, and


at the Royal College of Music, London. During a thirty year
teaching career he made great use of Renaissance music as an
introduction to classical ensemble playing for young musicians.
Francis also edits and performs West Gallery Church Music, and
in 1997 he founded the London Gallery Quire. In 2002 he was
awarded a PhD by Liverpool University for his thesis on some
Manx West Gallery manuscripts.

Travelling
Benslow Music campus is a five-minute walk from
Hitchin train station, which is served by fast, frequent
trains from Cambridge, Peterborough and London
Kings Cross. Road access from the A1(M) and the M1
is swift, and we are within easy reach of Luton and
Stansted airports. Call us if you need help in planning
your journey.

Checking in
Courses begins with tea at 6.30pm and you can register
and occupy your room from 4.30pm onwards. Courses
end at approximately 4pm on the last day.
