Ive lost count of the number of times my 16-year-old daughter Jenny refuses to eat her dinner,
says Karen Pickles. I try to make her eat some of her vegetables, but after coming home from a long day
at work I dont feel like arguing about food. Good food goes in the bin because Jenny is feeling fat.
Being a teenager these days is very different from what it was 20 years ago. While nowadays
most people know whats good for you, todays teens ignore this and go on diets. A recent study shows
that 15% of 14- and 15-year-old girls miss a meal at school once a week and 20% regularly skip breakfast.
And it is not just the girls. Some 10% of teen boys skip lunch once a week and 12% miss breakfast.
Getting a teenager to eat better is not difficult. It is important to educate young people about
nutrition and to understand the pressures they are under. First of all, teenagers should understand the
connection between eating well and good health. They should get five portions of fruit and vegetables per
day. Eating fresh fruit and vegetables can help improve the memory, which means that they might only
need to study one hour instead of two. A lot of teens dont have breakfast because they think it will make
them fat. They need to understand that eating breakfast can help them to keep their weight down because
it makes their metabolism go faster.
And dont forget. Exercise is essential to help teenagers keep fit, healthy and use up any excess
calories.
