CEMENT TILES

made of cement & sand, locally manufactured by hydraulic pressed process.

come in plain monochromed colors, usually in red & green & also in multi-colored
design finished surfaces on top.
most cement tiles are pigmented to give them an "earthy" look similar to terra-cotta
tile.
Cement tiles are used primarily indoors because they're not frost-proof, and cement
tiles are usually finished with a top coat.
installed on concrete slabs with mortar as binder, finished with the corresponding
colored cement filler between joints, grind on top to have smooth surface finish & waxed to attain a
glossy look when done.
decorative cement tiles first appeared in France and Belgium at the end of the 19th
century.
Cement tiles are produced extensively in the United States and other countries. They
are available in the following commercial sizes:

25mm x 15cm x 15cm (1 x 6 x 6 inches)

25mm x 20cm x 20cm (1 x 8 x 8 inches)

25mm x 25cm x 25cm (1 x 10 x 10 inches)

25mm x 30cm x 30cm (1 x 12 x 12 inches)

CERAMIC TILES

relatively small, modular surfacing units made of clay or other ceramic material.
used for surfacing walls, floors & countertops.
fired in a kiln at very high temperatures to attain a durable, tough & dense material
that is water-resistant, difficult to stain & easy to clean & its colors generally do not fade.
come in almost unlimited number of sizes, colors & patterns.

CERAMIC TILE APPLICATION

1. Thick-Set Process tile setting process in which ceramic tile is applied over a Portland cement
mortar bed to 1 in. (19 to 38 mm) thick, which allows for accurate slopes & planes in the
finished work.
2. Thin-Bed Process tile setting process in which ceramic tile is bonded to a continuous, stable
backing with a thin coat of dry-set mortar, latex-portland cement mortar, epoxy mortar or an organic
adhesive, 1/32 to 1/8 in (0.8 to 3.2 mm) thick.
TYPES OF CERAMIC TILES:
1. Glazed Tiles has a face of ceramic material fused into the body of the tile & may have glossy,
matte or crystalline finishes in a wide range of color; principally used for walls (full height or
wainscoat) & also as table or counter top.

2. Unglazed Tiles hard & dense & derive their color from the body of the material, colors tend to be
muted; principally used for floors due to its unslippery surface.
3. Porcelain Tiles have bright colors; normally used for walls due to its fine, smooth, dense & glasslike finish.
4. Natural Clay Tiles have more muted colors; usually used for floors, sometimes on walls too,
because of its dense body with distinctive slightly textured appearance.
5. Quarry Tiles unglazed floor tiles having a natural clay body; also called promenade tiles; made
through plastic extraction process from natural clay or shale; impervious to dirt, moisture & stairs
resistant to freezing & abrasion.
6. Ceramic Mosaic Tiles small ceramic tile having a porcelain or natural clay body, glazed for
surfacing walls or unglazed for use on both floors & walls & usually face- or back-mounted on a
30cm x 30cm paper or netting as binder to hold tiny pieces for easy handling, laying & setting;
resistant to freezing & abrasion.
7. Faience Mosaic Tiles special tiles less than 15 sq. cm in facial form.
8. Paver Tiles unglazed ceramic floor tile similar in composition to ceramic mosaic tile but thicker &
larger in surface area; weather-proof & can be used on floors subject to heavy duty use.
9. Other special purpose ceramic tiles are:
Non-slip tiles
Ship or gully tiles
Frost proof tiles
Conducive tiles

STAMPED CONCRETE PATTERNS (SCP)

Stamped concrete pattern is concrete made to look like tile, stone, brick or
cobblestone. It is poured in place, colored, impressed with patterns to produce exquisite masonry effects.
Its variation in geometry & texture tend to impart a magnificently natural, rustic look,
as compared to geometrically perfect factory products.
The impressions can be grouted or ungrouted; grouted can be colored; was sealers can
polish the surface.
Preferably used for exterior terraces, courtyards, patio & driveways; can also be used
for interiors.

MARBLE

Marble is a metamorphic rock of crystallized limestone, consisting mainly of calcite &

dolomite, capable of taking a high polish that is commercially made available as a dimension stone.
