Below are some details on the PCI Exams:
The course provides participants five days of intensive training.
The PCI Course Exams consist of two parts:
1. Multiple Choice / Fill in the Blank Exam
2. Practical Exam (using inspection instruments)
If you do not meet the pre reqs then your training end on the fifth day after the exams
If you do meet the pre reqs and pass the course exam listed above, you will stay and take another set of exams on the
sixth day to become fully certified.
The PCI Certification Exams consist of three parts:
1. Multiple Choice / Fill in the Blank Exam
2. Practical Exam (Using inspection instruments)
3. Written Inspection Plan Exam
About the PCI Program
Please keep in mind that the PCI course can also benefit employees on the production side.
This course can help make production employees be more aware of:
1. toxic metals
2. specifications
3. safety hazards associated with coatings production
4. personal protection equipment used by production coating employees
5. how to do a proper surface preparation cleanliness of the substrate
6. methods on how to remove the contaminations from the substrate
7. hot dip galvanizing factors affecting the surface preparations
8. how to check the coating thickness
9. how to evaluate the method of surface preparation and required blasting profile criteria for T.S.A. application
10. importance of proper surface preparation

The PCI program standards are based and designed to meet the Body of Knowledge (BOK) in ASTM D3276 Standard
Guide for Painting Inspectors (Metal Substrates).
The objective of this course is to throughly train individuals in the proper methods of inspecting surface preparation and
installation of industrial and marine protective coatings and lining systems in array of industrial structures and facilities.
There are no prerequisites to attend the PCI Course. However, candidates should be prepared for an intense and fastpaced week of training with evening homework and study in order to cover an extensive amount of information in 5 days.
Taking the PCI course is a commitment that will require extra effort for successful completion.
Program attendees receive a training certificate. Attendees who complete the course and pass the course exam with a
score of 70% or better become eligible to receive a PCI Basic Inspector level card. A Certification-level written and
practical exam is offered on day 6 for those who meet the prerequisites for certification-level testing.

Course Format
The course provides participants 5 days of intensive training and includes multiple workshops and problem solving
exercise so that participants may immediately apply the learning in a classroom setting, without the pressure of
production and project schedules. In order to enhance the learning environment and illustrate the importance of
teamwork, the workshop and exercises will be done in small teams
This course is completed with a comprehensive written examination and a practical (instrument use) examination.
Students passing both components of the basic course exam at 70% or higher and meeting the prerequisites for
certification can take the written and hands-on certification exams on day 6. A passing grade of 80% or higher on the
written and hands-on certification exam is required to become an SSPC Certified Coating Inspector.
If you fail any of the exam components, SSPC will allow you one exam or exam component retake within one year from
when you first sat for the initial exam(s). You must first formally apply to SSPC and obtain written permission to retake
any exam. There will be a fee to retake the exam.
If you fail the exam or component the second time, you must wait at least six months and then retake the PCI training
course and exam.
Anyone who is unable to pass the written course exam, the written certification exam or the certification practical exam a
third time will be considered ineligible to participate in the PCI program for a minimum of two years from the date of the
