Ancient Lore

During the marriage of Orlanth and Ernalda, our women women

learned secrets from Ernalda, making Ernalda our main deity.
Our clans earliest famous event was when Pella, the pottery
goddess, made the first pot to store grain in.
During the Storm Age, we adopted strangers into our clan. Our
worst enemies in those days were the beastmen.
We were originally a Balanced Clan.
At the Dawn, we first awakened Ernalda, the Mother Goddess.
Our attitude toward dragons and their ilk was positive; we sought
understanding between the two peoples and entered into their
dragon knowledge.
1329
When we arrived in Dragon Pass, we claimed more land than we
needed, to grow into. We built a clan hall, some steads, and a
temple to Ernalda. But when we left Heortland, we lost much of our
connection with the gods.
1330
The outlook for trading was good.
Orlev, a thane of the Jenestni clan, asked us for information
about Kuschile, chief of the Arnoring clan. He reminded us that we
owed his people a favor. We endeavored to answer his questions.
Orlev asked us if Kuschile was a holy chief. We said, Kuschile is
as pious as the average Orlanthi chieftain. Orlev departed, and
thanked us for the information. Not long afterwards, he returned
to our tula to withdraw his thanks. The information you gave us
was mistaken at best and deceitful at worst. Our relations with
the Arnorings have been sorely tested, and it is your careless
words which are to blame.
Yinkin cultists came and asked for our help against the Peluski,
who they had found out were raising dogs. We gave them gifts, so
they could hire mercenaries. They thanked us and departed. Soon we
heard that the Yinkin people were successful in their raid against
the Peluski, and that the dogs were slain.
Emissaries of the Wildcat clan sought our support in the Orlanth
and Aroka heroquest. We sent many worshippers to the ritual. Our
worshippers enjoyed their lengthy pilgrimage to Orlanths holy
place. The Wildcats Wind Lord was unable to complete the
difficult quest, and their elders lamented what would doubtless be
a continuing drought.

The famed poet Ordangmar was our honored guest at a great feast.
All were enraptured by his poesy, except for Ashart, who thought
the poet defamed his honor. We proposed that the two resolve their
differences with an arm-wrestling match. As expected, Ashart
easily bested Ordangmar. The poet disappointed many by leaving
immediately, and vowing never to return.
1331
The god-talkers said we would be blessed with many children this
year.
Explorers found the warrior Nallindia, who fled from the injustice
of the Pharaoh, and said we should give her asylum. We adopted her
as a weaponthane. She took her place in the chiefs household. The
people were proud to see a foe of the Pharaoh honored in such a
fashion.
An attack by the Orlundi cut short Jarosars exploration mission.
Baranwolf was attacked by a weird Chaos monster. We killed the
creature, but there was no way to heal Baranwolf, and he died. We
sacrificed to Orlanth in Baranwolfs honor.
Tarkalor was bullied and insulted by a pair of Arnoring
weaponthanes at their clan market. We sent for shamans to curse
them. Shamans came and said they would curse the Arnorings for the
low price of 15 cows. We accepted the arrangement. We waited to
hear that they suffered humiliating effects from the curse, but we
got no such news.
Our cattle raid against the Undaroli was spotted. We drove the
Undaroli from the battlefield, and were able to plunder their
tula. Nallindia distinguished herself in the fighting.
Harbard of the Isolting clan offered us gifts. We threw a feast
for thanes of Harbards clan. They toasted our generosity, and
said they would speak of it to others. Our people made merry, and
also toasted the clan ring.
Jarosar convinced the Isoltings to create a new trading route.
The harvest was poor.
The young farmer Harnkorl reported that his stead was haunted. We
conducted a divination. The spirits of our ancestors said that
this ghost was sent by the Vanstatchi to vex us, as part of their
feud against us. We sent for shamans to banish the ghost. Shamans
came and said they would banish the ghost for the low price of 15
cows. We accepted the arrangement. They danced around Harnkorls
stead, banged on a drum, and ate a brew of moss and lichens. Their
eyes rolled back in their heads, and they spoke to the ghost. The
bangings of the ghost stopped. The shamans said they had banished
it.

Drought struck our lands. The spectre of starvation hovered over

us. We sacrificed to Heler, but our pleas for help went
unanswered.
Explorers found Humakts Raven Banner. We chose to keep Humakts
Raven Banner and ponder its bittersweet blessing.
Spirit-talkers showed up and asked if we needed anything from
them. We did not want anything from them, but gave them
hospitality. The old one told us we would be rewarded for our
generosity.
Jarosar led a caravan to trade with the Tree Brothers.
Drought struck our lands. The spectre of starvation hovered over
us. We sacrificed to Heler, who broke the clouds and showered our
lands with blessed rain.
1332
The god-talkers predicted that other clans would form bad opinions
of us, no matter how generous we were.
Our scouts found a strange clan of beast folk who were like ducks.
Tempering mercy with shrewdness, we exacted payment from the
ducks, whose larders were heavy.
Aransanda began the Ernalda Feeds the Tribe heroquest. Daga, god
of drought, attacked Aransanda. Aransanda convinced Daga to mend
his evil ways and soon found herself back in the ritual ground.
Her quest ended prematurely.
Offir, a thane of the Wildcat clan, asked us for the details of
the The Storm Age story. We told him what he wanted to know. He
thanked us and departed. After Offir left, our god-talkers said
that our clan magic had suffered because we aided the irreverent.
They said that Korol, the chief of the Wildcats, is so impious
that the gods want nothing to do with him.
We raided the Jenestni. We drove the Jenestni from the
battlefield, and were able to plunder their tula.
The Orlundi raided us for 13 cows while we were raiding.
Korlmar and his family came from distant Esrolia, to ask for
membership in our clan. We accepted them, and on that day they
became Espentil.
While exploring our tula, we turned up a cave with green-colored
clay that we can use for making high-quality pottery.
A two-headed calf was born; the people saw it as an ill omen. We
sacrificed to Uralda for protection from deformed cattle. The godtalkers said that Uralda had heard our pleas.

The ducks delivered their annual tribute of food.

Aransanda began the Ernalda Feeds the Tribe heroquest. But she was
unable to enter the place of the gods.
Brandgor of the Undaroli clan lodged a legal claim against us,
demanding many cows as compensation for the death of his nephew,
who was slain by Orlmar Half-foot. We paid him a third of what he
asked.
We stole 42 cows from the Undaroli.
We stole 16 cows and 34 sheep from the Undaroli.
1333
The god-talkers expected that our esteem among the other clans
would increase.
Hindala was accused of deliberately spreading disease. We cured
her with magic rituals.
The exploration mission to the northwest returned, having sighted
many dragonewts there. Alirene, one of our weaponthanes, said we
should go back to steal a silver statue of a dragon from them. We
sent a party to steal the statue. They found the statue, but also
attracted the attention of the dragonewts, who attacked furiously.
There were many more dragonewts than we had expected. They held
them off until a good opportunity to escape presented itself. In
so doing, they slew 5 dragonewts.
Ducks came and demanded compensation for kinsmen they said we
slew. We paid a cottars wergild for each dead duck. The ducks
squawked mightily, but accepted the payment.
A trickster came to laugh at us, and to offer us a blessing that
would help us on our next heroquest. We politely declined his
offer. He chortled through his nose and left.
We raided the Jenestni. We were driven off and had no opportunity
to obtain booty. Alirene distinguished herself in the fighting.
We found Peluski hunters poaching deep within our territory. We
offered their clan the chance to buy hunting rights on our land.
The traders of the Peluski closed their ears to our offer,
claiming that we were unworthy of trust.
Jarosar could not persuade the Rune Ducks to create a new trading
route.
Aransanda began the Ernalda Feeds the Tribe heroquest. Daga, god
of drought, attacked Aransanda. Aransanda attacked and defeated
Daga and soon found herself back in the ritual ground. Her quest
ended prematurely.

Our cattle raid against the Undaroli was spotted. We drove the
Undaroli off, and were happy to have survived the battle.
While plowing the fields, the carls found something strange. It
was the enormous skull of some kind of dragon creature. We
displayed it in a holy building.
Factions appeared among the weaponthanes, who squabbled over the
division of loot from a raid. We let them resolve the matter
themselves. Weaponthanes on both sides of the dispute were ashamed
that their squabble had reached the ears of the ring. They pledged
to behave properly in the future.
Yinkin cultists offered to perform a ritual which would make
better hunters out of our alynxes. They would be better able to
kill disease-bearing forest rats, or so the Yinkini said. We said
wed owe them a favor. They gathered our alynxes together, and
successfully performed their Yinkin ritual.
We raided the Orlundi and eluded their patrols. As the battle
began, Jarosar remembered a powerful dream he had the night
before, a dream that could have meant victory or defeat. He
acquitted himself bravely. We could do no more than fight on the
land we wished to claim, and eventually had to withdraw.
We were raided by the Peluski. Asborn was wounded while facing the
Peluski charge. He rallied our warriors and attacked. Asborn swung
his sword like a whip to drive off dogs. The Peluski broke and ran
from his charge. Everyone said that Asborn had done a great thing.
Sadly, Asborns wound never stopped bleeding, and he fell in the
middle of the battle. He died before we could heal him. We drove
the Peluski off, and their survivors left without plundering our
tula.
1334
The god-talkers foretold few arguments within the clan.
Acting as our emissary, Jarosar asked the Orlundi to make good on
the obligation they owed us, and provide us with food. Jarosar
asked for a bit more food than custom demanded. The Orlundi carls
seemed much affronted by this request. Their chief, Olende, said
he would give us no more than the customary amount. Jarosar asked
for no more and no less than the usual amount. The Orlundi
provided us with the food without further complaint.
An ill-omen vexed us when a young, unmarried woman of our clan saw
the shadow of a bird pass over her. We sacrificed to the gods for
luck. The god-talkers said the signs were good, and that the bird
shadow which passed over Engarna should be ignored.
We raided the Orlundi and eluded their patrols. Although they
resisted this bitterly, we were able to hold part of the Orlundi
tula.

We raided the Orlundi and eluded their patrols. Before the battle,
Broyan was touched by Orlanths blessing. He fought hard but was
overmatched by an enemy Orlanthi, and had to flee. We were driven
off and had no opportunity to obtain booty.
Someone killed some of our horses. We made the claim before their
clan ring. They denied that they had slain our horses. Enastarra,
who argued our case with them, thought they were lying.
We learned that the Orlundi had declared a feud against us.
Our expedition to the west returned. We learned that this place
was called Beast Valley, for it was teeming with Beastfolk:
minotaurs, centaurs, duck-men, fox people even wasp people.
Jarosar came across a small community of wasp-riders. They gave
our explorers tokens of friendship, and said, Many of your kind
have offended us, claiming our land as their own. But you show us
a degree of respect, and we wish to encourage this attitude in
you.
We were able to attract 17 new cottars to the clan. They brought
with them 6 children.
A new clan came to Dragon Pass; they were called the Boskovi. They
sought permission to travel through our lands on their trek
northwards. We proposed an alliance with them. Their clan ring
agreed that it would be good to have friends in a new land. To
seal the arrangement, we exchanged gifts of equal value. Then we
let them pass through our tula.
Iskalli led a caravan to trade with the Rune Ducks.
Aransanda began the Ernalda Feeds the Tribe heroquest. Daga, god
of drought, attacked Aransanda. Aransanda survived Dagas blows.
Aransanda went to the elves and asked for their help. The elves
accepted her, and gave her the seed she needed. The seed burrowed
into the earth and led Aransanda to Maran Gor, who was keeping
Barntar as her thrall. Aransanda convinced Maran Gor to release
Barntar by telling her that without him, the people would starve.
Aransanda found Esra and Uralda in the halls of the dead, held
prisoner by Ty Kora Tek. Aransanda invoked their kinship, and Ty
Kora Tek returned Esra and Uralda to her. Aransanda tried to leave
the tunnel in the earth, but a terrible woman stood in the way.
Aransanda invoked her kinship with the terrible woman, who agreed
to let them pass. The people rejoiced, looking forward to
overflowing bushels now that crop yields would improve.
We raided the Orlundi. Although we pressed them sorely, the
Orlundi werent willing to flee from their land. We took 7 Orlundi
auxiliaries captive.
We were able to ransom the prisoners.

We were raided by the horse nomads. We drove the horse nomads off,
and their survivors left without plundering our tula.
Hindala was again accused of deliberately spreading disease. We
cured her with magic rituals.
We raided the Orlundi and eluded their patrols. We were driven off
and had no opportunity to obtain booty.
1335
Our seers predicted that the hunters would find little game this
year.
Wilms came to ask us for a gift of luck and divine favor,
reminding us that we owed his clan, the Turtles, a favor. We gave
more than the customary amount. Wilms said that the Espentils were
good friends, and that his people would not forget this.
We stole 35 cows and 24 sheep from the Orlundi.
While exploring in Prax, we found a group of bird-riding nomads
willing to help us raid a neighboring clan. The nomads were very
appreciative of the gifts we sent them.
We spotted a cattle raid by the Jenestni. We were driven from the
battlefield and looted.
The Undaroli raided us for 18 cows.
Jarstakos won a bet with the Squat Oak chieftain, and won much
grain. We gave them hospitality. They seemed pleased that we
honored them in this way. Jarstakos asked them if they wanted to
gamble some more, but they declined.
We spotted a cattle raid by the Orlundi. We were driven from the
battlefield and looted.
Uralda cultists sought aid in a great ceremony to prevent cattle
sickness in a distant corner of Dragon Pass. We sent Voskandora to
the ceremony with heartfelt prayers and hopes for the rituals
success.
We freed the Rune Ducks from their obligation to pay us tribute.

Aransanda took her boots off, and found earth
from the realm of the gods inside. We put this earth in a jar, and
considered it a great treasure.
Our explorers found spirits at Mount Kero Fin, who claimed kinship
with Orlanth. Helganna the Knowing said we should sacrifice to
them. We did so. Helganna said that the signs were good, and that
the spirits would favor us.
The Jenestni raided us for 25 cows.
1336
Eurmal laughed during Sacred Time, and said that misfortune would
plague us until we replaced at least half of our clan ring.
Explorers met a bark-clad shaman, who made dire predictions, and
said we should sacrifice to Kolat, the spirit-herding god. We
sacrificed Humakts Raven Banner to Kolat. The god-talkers could
not say whether Kolat had received our sacrifice, because
Orlanths brother is not one of the gods we usually worship, and
they did not know which signs to look for.
We caught Bastakos of the Anmangarn clan sneaking into one of our
steads. We told the Anmangarni that they would have to pay to get
him back. They convinced us to let them pay less than the
customary ransom.
Hindala was again accused of deliberately spreading disease. We
cured her with magic rituals.
We were raided by the Narri. We drove the Narri off, and their
survivors left without plundering our tula.
The Undaroli raided us for 12 cows.
Someone killed some of our horses. We made the claim before their
clan ring. They denied that they had slain our horses. Enastarra,
who argued our case with them, thought they were lying.
We stole 25 cows from the Orlundi.
Men gathered before the ring and said the women were not behaving
properly. The other ring members urged Jarstakos to curb his
criticism of the women. Jarstakos would not withdraw his
complaints against the women. He promised to curse them even more
vehemently in the days to come.
Men gathered before the ring and said the women were still not
behaving properly. The other ring members urged Jarstakos to curb
his criticism of the women. Jarstakos admitted that his complaints
were, by and large, without foundation. He told the men this, and
they also withdrew their criticisms of the women.

Jarosar led a caravan to trade with the Isoltings.

The harvest was poor.
Jarosar led a caravan to trade with the Rune Ducks.
We were raided by the Trolls. Trolls tried to crush Jarosar with
spiked maces. They sent packs of trollkin to tackle him. Finally
they forgot about our other warriors and just tried to kill
Jarosar. Nothing they did could hurt our champion. We drove the
Trolls off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula.
A woman from the Peluski clan came to sell us thralls. We bought 5
thralls. Then we freed them to become cottars in our clan.
Our cattle raid against the Orlundi was spotted. We drove the
Orlundi off, and were happy to have survived the battle.
The Orlundi raided us for 27 cows.
1337
The god-talkers saw many ravens, and suspected there would be
battle later in the year.
Acting as our emissary, Jarosar sought an alliance with the
Zethnorings. They were pleased with the generous gifts we sent.
Jarosar said to them, You will profit greatly from an alliance.
Their chief, Ernaldness, declined our offer. You speak like
greedy people, Ernaldness clucked, and we of the Zethnoring clan
pride ourselves on our generosity.
Thanes and priests from the Narri clan accused Vininna of secret
murder. We conducted a divination. The signs showed that Vininna
was innocent. We told them that their rock spirit was wrong. They
were affronted at first, but gradually conceded that the spirits,
even a spirit so great as their rock spirit, can sometimes be
wrong. We still think she did it, they said, but will seek
further proof before demanding her death.
Jarosar began the heroquest of Issaries the Conciliator. Jarosar
found himself in a strange and blasted place, a place he should
have recognized but did not. He found Lhankor Mhy among the
Orlanthi there. Jarosar pointed out to Lhankor Mhy that the world
would need travelling, talking, and trade, before being remade.
Lhankor Mhy agreed to go, after chiding Jarosar for being
imprecise and using ill-chosen words. Then Jarosar saw a fearsome
warrior who had to be Storm Bull. He said, This way! There is
chaos to fight! Where? said Urox, following along. Jarosar
searched for a very long time to find the worst part of the
problem. The problem is that people are enemies, and no longer
talk with one another, he thought. This realization led Jarosar to
dig in a hillside and uncover a passageway. The group crossed the
big water by walking down the steps of the tunnel. Along the way,

Storm Bull had to fight many chaos beasts. The worst was a
gigantic chaos thing, one whose name could only be pronounced by
the dead. Jarosar let Storm Bull fight alone. Storm Bull defeated
the chaos creature, slaying it utterly. Jarosar found the Digging
Stick People, who were suffering because the Long-Noses and BigTeeth were at war. Neither Lhankor Mhy or Storm Bull were
interested in helping Jarosar make peace between the warring
peoples. Jarosar said to Storm Bull, A big important battle is
coming up, and all peoples must learn to unite, and to fight only
their real foes. Storm Bull agreed to come along, but Lhankor Mhy
did not. Jarosar met with Oriska, the Long-Nose priestess, who
said that she had no reason to make peace with the Big-Teeth. He
went immediately to talk to the Big-Teeth. Jarosar met with
Paratur, the Big-Teeth war leader, who also said peace was
impossible. Jarosar asked the Knowing God for help, interrupting
some pointless thing that Lhankor Mhy was doing. Lhankor Mhy said
that Oriska was nothing but an overgrown cow, and Paratur just a
big alynx. Then Jarosar knew to tell Storm Bull to romance Oriska,
and Oriska agreed to attend a peace parley. He told Storm Bull to
kick Paratur, and Paratur agreed as well. Then Jarosar had to
decide what to propose to them. He said, The Big-Teeth must only
attack weak and sick Long-Noses. He said, The Long-Noses must
accept that some of them will be eaten. Oriska and Paratur made
peace. Through this talking, they made trade. And with trade,
traveling began again, and the world started to knit itself back
into place. Jarosar had done his work, and prepared to leave the
realm of the gods. After the others left, Jarosar was left alone
with the tiger Paratur. Paratur purred, Now, I never did promise
not to eat you, did I? Jarosar offered to trade treasures with
him. Paratur agreed as long we did not offer him a Digging Stick
People treasure. Paratur gave Jarosar a necklace of stones that
looked like tiger eyes and let him pass. The people celebrated
Jarosars successful enactment of the Issaries the Conciliator
myth. A delegation from the Narri clan was on hand to welcome him
back, give gifts to our clan, and promise to end their feud
against us.
We raided the Orlundi. Although they resisted this bitterly, we
were able to hold part of the Orlundi tula.
We raided the Orlundi and eluded their patrols. Orlaront had the
chance to fight like a hero that day. He acquitted himself
bravely. We drove the Orlundi from the battlefield, and were able
to plunder their tula.
The Peluski raided us for 21 cows.
The Wildcats raided us for 25 cows.
Orlkensor, a warrior of the Six Brothers clan, returned the young
girl Ernaldinni, who had run away from us, claiming to be an
orphan, and seeking adoption into their clan. We told Orlkensor
that we owed his clan a favor. Slights make war, but favors make

peace, he responded. Your words are generous, and I am honored

to accept them.
The harvest was plentiful.
Hindala was again accused of deliberately spreading disease. We
tried magic to cure her madness. We found that she could not be
helped; the madness was too strong in her. We outlawed her. She
left our tula, muttering.
The Jenestni raided us for 23 cows.
Someone killed some of our horses. We attacked the Orlundi.
We raided the Orlundi and eluded their patrols. We drove the
Orlundi from the battlefield, and were able to plunder their tula.
We took 4 Orlundi auxiliaries captive. The Orlundi were expecting
our attack, so we knew they had slain our horses. The people were
glad that we had struck against our treacherous foes.
We were able to ransom the prisoners.
Jarosar could not persuade the Old Owls to create a new trading
route.
Ernaldesta Strongheart of the Orlundi came to plead for peace and
to offer us 23 cows as one-time tribute. We demanded 15 cows, paid
to us every year, and the Orlundi thought we asked for too much. A
few days later we heard that they had hired magicians and
mercenaries from Tarsh who promised that they could beat us off if
we raided again.

We were raided by the Orlundi. We drove the Orlundi from the

battlefield, striking them down as they fled.
Natalina Strongheart of the Orlundi came to plead for peace and to
offer us 24 cows as one-time tribute. The Orlundi agreed to our
demand for yearly tribute of 10 cows. We swore to Humakt and to
Ernalda to refrain from raiding the Orlundi for as long as they
continued to pay tribute. Of course these oaths were binding on
them as well.
1338
The god-talkers sensed the presence of disease spirits.
We approached the Orlundi clan with an offer of peace. We proposed
a reciprocal marriage between clans to seal our peace. They said

that they would sooner intermarry with beastmen than with us. And
beastmen were their ancient enemies.
Markalor wanted vengeance against the men who had killed his
father many years before. We sent a delegation to demand wergild
for the slaying of Markalors father. The Anmangarn lawspeaker
said that their clan should not be liable for actions taken so
long ago, when Intagarn and Lhankpent belonged to another, faraway
clan. Furthermore, the two men had changed since they burned
Brandgor. They have renounced their brutal ways, and are now as
judicious and honorable as any Orlanthi thane. Yet, said their
chief, Orstanor, in the interests of harmony between our clans,
we will pay the wergild you ask.
We were raided by the Horse-Spawn. We exchanged missile fire with
them, but never closed.
We gave gifts to the Squat Oaks so that we could cross their tula.
We raided the Vanstatchi. Orlaront realized that Korlmhy, the
Vanstatch defender who was holding us off, must be performing an
Elmal quest. Orlaront tried to cast doubt on Korlmhys knowledge
of Elmal, but Korlmhy wounded Orlaront. We drove the Vanstatchi
from the battlefield, and were able to plunder their tula.
Priestesses of Chalana Arroy said they would heal our sick and
wounded in exchange for a future favor. We asked them to heal all
of our sick and wounded. They did so, and the people rejoiced. The
priestesses departed, reminding us that they would one day return
to ask for a favor in return.
Glendara, a carl of our clan, said that her prize stallion,
Tempest, had been stolen by Rangarda Dark-Eyes of the Isolting
clan. We launched a legal claim against Rangarda Dark-Eyes. We
took our claim to her clan ring. Rangarda denied that she had
anything to do with the disappearance of Glendaras horse. Her
clan leaders seemed to make an honest effort to determine the
truth, but ultimately ruled that there was no evidence of
wrongdoing on Rangardas part. Glendara was most displeased by
this result.
Our explorers found a cache of loot in the Dragonewt Wildlands,
and the dragonewts did not stop them from taking it. Our explorers
found a cache of loot in the Dragonewt Wildlands, and the
dragonewts did not stop them from taking it.
Acting as our emissary, Baranthos sought an alliance with the
Zethnorings. They were pleased with the generous gifts we sent.
Baranthos said to them, You need warriors to protect you, and we
need food. Their chief, Ernaldness, agreed that our two clans
should be allies. Your swords will protect us, and we will cook
the food for your victory feasts.

Broyan attempted the heroquest of Orlanth and Aroka. Broyan became

as one with Orlanth. Ernalda told him that his nephew, Daga, was
causing a drought and harming the people. Orlanth said that he
would drive off or kill Daga. Broyan fought against Daga.
Victorious, he returned to us, claiming that he had slain Daga
where even Orlanth could not. We added the magical Klanth of
Orlanth to our treasures.
The sons and daughter of Glendara recovered the stallion called
Tempest, which they found secreted away on the tula of the
Isolting clan. They slew one of Rangarda Dark-Eyes sons, and
wounded another. We sent gifts to the Isoltings, to smooth
relations with them. They praised us for our generous gesture, and
gave us a reciprocal gift equal in value to our own. They said
that we should consider the fighting between the families of
Glendara and Rangarda as a personal matter, and one which would
not interfere with the strong relations between our two clans.
1339 *
Issaries said that if we acquired more treasures in the next two
years, he would reward us richly in years to come.
Warriors of the Taralings demanded safe passage through our tula
so they could attack the Orlundi. We allowed them to travel
through our tula. We heard later that the Taralings had torched
many Orlundi steads, but the Orlundi had fled in confusion, and
there had been no fighting.
Jarosar could not persuade the Narri to create a new trading
route.
We gave gifts to the Squat Oaks so that we could cross their tula.
We raided the Vanstatchi. We were losing the battle. Our warriors
were shamed by Orlaronts cries. They turned and faced the
Vanstatchi and fought harder to make up for their failure of
nerve. We drove the Vanstatchi from the battlefield, and were able
to plunder their tula.
Jarosar could not persuade the Blue Jays to create a new trading
route.
Jarnandar began the Chalana Arroy Heals the Scars heroquest.
Jarnandar found himself in a strange palace, where foreigners
requested his healing aid. He healed them, and then went to heal
the wounded Storm People. He healed the foreign people. One of the
foreigners blocked Jarnandars way and threatened to kill him. He
cured the foreigner of his foreignness, and so he protected
Jarnandar. He said his name was Elmal. Jarnandar healed many storm
people, but was then confronted with Orlanth, who wanted to kill
him. Jarnandar healed his wounded judgment; he made him one of his
attendants. The Unholy Trio appeared in the world and caused
trouble at Orlanths court. Orlanths brother, Kolat, argued with
them. So Malia first used her terrible gift, the scar of disease,

and made Kolat unwell. Jarnandar defeated Malia without hurting

her, and healed Kolat. The Unholy Trio embroiled the world in war.
Storm Bull decided to kill all of them, starting with his brother,
Ragnaglar. They fought; Urox wounded Ragnaglar and was ready to
kill him. Jarnandar threw himself between the two combatants.
Storm Bull would not relent. He learned two important secrets,
which allowed him to confront Urox. Urox did not kill Ragnaglar
that day. King Heort was killed in the war against Chaos, and
Humakt tried to prevent Jarnandar from healing him. Jarnandar
healed the scar of certitude under Humakts tongue. He then healed
King Heort, who kept people alive while Chalana Arroy and the
other gods went to hell to heal Yelm and the world. Jarnandar
returned to the land of mortals from his successful quest. Our
sick people were healed, and those on the ring who were ill
reported feeling much better.

They left, shaking their fists and repeating their threats. Even

1340
All of the omens were unlucky.
Iskalli convinced the Zethnorings to create a new trading route.
Explorers met a bark-clad shaman, who made dire predictions, and
said we should sacrifice to Kolat, the spirit-herding god. We
sacrificed ten cows to Kolat. The god-talkers could not say
whether Kolat had received our sacrifice, because Orlanths
brother is not one of the gods we usually worship, and they did
not know which signs to look for.
Brennas uncle found out that she was sneaking off into the forest
to speak with a spirit. We sacrificed to the spirit. Our godtalkers saw many good omens after the sacrifice was made.
We stole 16 cows and 19 sheep from the Undaroli.
Brodasart, son of Glendara, was slain by relatives of Rangarda
Dark-Eyes of the Isolting clan. We sacrificed in honor of
Brodasart.
We approached the Vanstatch clan with an offer of peace. We
offered to lend them some of our magic. They were pleased by our
generosity, and we ended the feud.

Odayla cultists offered to perform a ritual to make the hunting

better in our area. We let them share in our clan magic. They
departed, telling us that we would know when the ritual had been
completed when the forest filled with elk.
Explorers from our clan found the body of a dragonewt warrior
lying in a stream bed. We decided to make magical armor from its
hide. It was difficult to skin the dragonewt corpse without
destroying the hide, but our tanners and magicians managed the
task. We attuned the armor to Enastarra.
Iskalli could not persuade the Boskovi to create a new trading
route.
1341
The god-talkers said that Issaries and Orlanth would judge us by
our ability to increase our herds.
We spotted a cattle raid by the Jenestni. We drove the Jenestni
off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula.
Orlev said he had been given poor hospitality among the Arnorings,
and that they were deliberately slighting us. We sent a delegation
to protest the Arnoringss poor hospitality. They claimed to be
offended by our accusation of poor hospitality. Orlev is a fool,
and you are fools to be pressing his claim! their lawspeaker
cried.
Einarth Milk-Eyes came to us with a prophecy. It seemed to mean
that we should start a tribe, but first we must succeed at the
tribe-making quest.
Broyan began the Storm Tribe heroquest. Broyan was told by Ernalda
to make a tribe, so that he could challenge the Emperor. But the
Doubting Wheel rolled up and told Broyan not to make a tribe. He
tried to catch the Doubting Wheel in a net. When he threw a net
over it, the Doubting Wheel shrank down and became a tiny thing,
small enough for Broyan to put in his purse. Broyan found Yinkin,
who said he would join the tribe if Broyan could defeat the
champions of the Plant Tribe. Broyan fought both of them. He tore
off the many feet of Rustling Veins, which gave it sustenance. He
blunted the many swords of Sharp Green, which gave it power. The
Plant Tribe was defeated, and Yinkin said that his Cat Clan would
join the Storm Tribe, provided it finds a way to remember its good
laws. Broyan found the Knowing God trapped inside a great cube. He
recited a poem about square things becoming round. The cube showed
no signs of having heard the poem. He hit the cube. The cube was
broken, and so was Broyans hand. The Knowing God, who hardly ever
even smiles, could not stop laughing. I might come to your
confederation moot, he said, if these tears of mirth ever end,
and I regain my sight. Broyan found Vadrus, who had decided to
fight Yinkin and his Cat Clan. He challenged Vadrus to a contest
of strength. Vadrus accepted the challenge. They arm-wrestled, and
Broyan won. You have bested me, so I am obliged to do as you

wish, Vadrus said, I will seek a foe other than Yinkin, and may
even attend this confederation moot of yours so long as that
accursed cat is not among the chieftains there. Broyan found more
chieftains to bring their clans to the confederation moot, but
when they got there, they fell to fighting, and blamed him for
making contradictory promises. He offered to fight each and every
one of them. They were quite ready to do this, and Broyan was
preparing for the battle when Ernalda brought him implements of
tribal regalia. She brought the Chest of Torcs, with which he
could gift the clan leaders. She brought the Hall of
Understanding, where people would settle their differences by
talking them out. She brought the Crown of Authority, which made
people respect his sacral powers and pledge allegiance to him.
Most of the clans agreed to make the tribe, but there were still
some who were stubborn. Then warriors of the Night Tribe came and
attacked the quarrelling clans. Broyan led the fight against the
Night People. Everyone banded together to fight these hungry
enemies. After they defeated the night warriors, they acclaimed
Broyan as their king. Broyan returned to the land of mortals, his
quest successful. The god-talkers said that our next attempt to
make a tribe would benefit from the favor of Orlanth. To
everyones great joy, our heroquest succeeded, and our clan
readied itself for tribe-making in the near future.
An exploratory party was captured by gigantic bull-men, who took
them as thralls. Only Iskalli was allowed to return, to warn us
never to venture onto Beastfolk lands again. We warned other clans
not to go to the lands of the beastfolk.
Aransanda convinced the Blue Jays to create a new trading route.
Jarstakos convinced the Hendarti to create a new trading route.
Humakti warriors said we should give them permission to enter our
tula and fight the undead. We granted it, and sacrificed to
Humakt. They praised us as a wise and honorable clan. They tramped
around our lands for many days, but did not find the creatures
they were looking for. They were good guests, though, and did
little to disturb us.
We found fused lumps of iron in the hills nearby.
Bastakos, of the Six Brothers clan, asked us to give him grain,
because we owed him a favor. We gave him more than he wanted.
Bastakos praised our generosity, and said that all of Dragon Pass
would hear of it. Our carls were displeased with us; they said
that generosity had to be tempered with common sense.
Einarth Milk-Eyes came to us again with a similar prophecy. It
seemed to mean that we should start a tribe. We took his words to
heart, and decided it was time to assemble a tribe.

We approached the Orlundi clan with an offer of peace. We offered

them payment. They were pleased by our generosity, and we ended
the feud.
1342
The god-talkers predicted many piglets would be born this year.
The Six Brothers came to demand that we trade our iron to them. We
arranged a trade agreement with them. We crafted a trade agreement
with the Six Brothers, which let them get first pick of our iron
each year.
We conducted a divination to pick a name for our tribe, which
suggested we call ourselves the Sambari. We met to decide which
clans should get invitations to join our tribe.
Garstal accused his wife, Doranda, and Vastyr, his young nephew,
of adultery. We conducted a divination. The spirits of our
ancestors said that Doranda and Vastyr were blameless, and that we
would suffer if they were outlawed. The ring interrogated them.
They steadfastly proclaimed their innocence. They seemed sincere
in this. The ring asked their kinfolk if they could have done it.
No one could believe what Garstal accused them of. He has been
drinking too much, driven by baseless and unthinking jealousy.
They were exonerated. They thanked us for being wise enough to see
the truth.
We asked the prosperous Clan Isolting to join our new tribe. We
told them that the other clans would supply warriors to protect
their herds. They acknowledged that there was strength in numbers.
The Isoltings said that they would come to a confederation moot.
We learned of the Jenestni demands for joining the new tribe. We
agreed that the other clans of the tribe should not trade with
outsiders when they could trade with the Jenestni instead. We
agreed that the other clans should lend them fertility magic. We
demanded favorable trade terms for other clans of the tribe
seeking Jenestni grain. To make the deal more attractive, we
promised to give them a treasure. The Jenestni ring saw
opportunities in our proposal.
We talked to Wildcat leaders to see if they wanted to join our new
tribe. We agreed that the other clans would sacrifice to Elmal. We
agreed to a pledge of respect for Elmal in the rites of kingship.
They gratefully accepted the council seats we offered them. The
Wildcats said that they would come to a confederation moot.
Clan Narri, on whose tula is found the War Rock, negotiated the
terms under which they might join the new tribe. We promised them
better respect for shamans. They were pleased, and a little
surprised, that we agreed to treat shamans as the equals of
priests. We argued over the sacrifices that each clan should give
to the spirit of the War Rock. They accepted the sacrifices we

suggested. The Narri said that they would come to a confederation

moot.
The ferocious Six Brothers clan made many demands when we sought
to bring them into our tribe. We agreed that they should lead
tribal raids. In exchange for the things they wanted, we told them
that they would have to assign their extra weaponthanes to patrol
other clans. We dickered over the amount other clans would pay to
equip their warriors. We offered them less than they had asked,
but still convinced them that our offer was a good one. We agreed
to bar the Blue Jays from the tribe. We gifted them. We abandoned
negotiations with the Six Brothers.
Kentvent attempted the heroquest of Orlanth and Aroka. He was
unable to enter the place of the gods.
The Turtle clan had its tribe-making demands all written out
before our emissaries even got there. We agreed that they should
sit in the Lhankor Mhy seat of the tribal council. We agreed that
all kings of our future tribe would have to know how to read. We
made them agree to make a large map, incorporating the exploration
of all the clans of the tribe. The Turtles said that they would
come to a confederation moot.
Aransanda began the Ernalda Feeds the Tribe heroquest. But she was
unable to enter the place of the gods.
We negotiated with Clan Peluski, the first clan to settle in our
immediate area, to see if we could bring them into our clan. We
agreed to propitiate the spirit of the crossline stone. They
grudgingly accepted the one seat we offered them. We told them we
would make war on the Beastfolk. We also made certain that they
understood just how high a price the tribe would be paying by
prosecuting their war for them. The Peluski said that they would
come to a confederation moot.
1343
The god-talkers foretold that our cows wouldnt give much milk.
The pig clan, Clan Taraling, made many demands when asked to join
our new tribe. We agreed that each of the other clans should
provide them with ten baskets of acorns a year. We agreed that
other clans should sacrifice to Mralota, the Pig Mother. We agreed
to allow a Mralota priestess on the tribal council every four
years. We said the tribe would see to it that they paid no more
tribute to the Six Brothers. The Taraling ring wanted to join our
tribe.
We found an old series of sacred stones in a forest clearing on
our tula. We conducted a divination. The spirits of our ancestors
said that the slumbering stone spirits were malign, and had once
served the dragon empire. They said we should leave them alone. To
be safe, we let the stones alone, and told our hunters to stay
away from them.

Many of our sheep became sick. We sent for shamans to drive away
the disease spirits. No shamans came. The sick sheep soon died.
When our emissaries went to the Orlundi to speak of a new tribe,
their earth priestess had much to ask of us. We agreed that the
other clans of the new tribe should help fortify the temple. We
promised them the Ernalda and Asrelia seats on the tribal ring.
The Orlundi said that they would come to a confederation moot.
The confederation moot started badly. Many of the clans were
offended by the concessions granted to others. We bargained to get
the satisfied clans to please the dissatisfied ones. We made
progress. We gave cows to the dissatisfied clans. The chieftains
failed to praise our generosity. We said they could always quit
the tribe later. The dissatisfied clans seemed happier, but still
had unresolved concerns. We spoke eloquently in praise of the
agreement. We made progress. Soon there were only minor objections
to the terms we negotiated. The confederation moot was a success.
We became a tribe, the Sambari.
The clans of the new tribe gathered to choose a king. We supported
the candidate chosen by the Peluski clan, which owed us more
favors than any other. Our eloquence swayed the clans, and our
candidate, Maniski of the Peluski, was chosen to rule.
The time came for Maniski to undergo the rites of kingship. We
celebrated the birth of a new tribe. Maniski completed the rites
of kingship. The celebration lasted for days.
One of our carls was found dead, a victim of secret murder. We
conducted a divination. The spirits of our ancestors groaned, and
said that Karendra was murdered by bandits crazed by bad wine. We
blamed outlaws for the crime. We sent a war party to punish the
outlaws. We found outlaws and did battle with them. We slew 2 of
them, and either captured the others or drove them off. We
interrogated the captives, but they all denied having anything to
do with Karendras death.
The weaponthanes complained that they had not raided in years.
We raided the Anmangarni and eluded their patrols. Orlaront struck
down an Anmangarn god-talker before the enemy was ready to fight,
then collected his powers for the battle to come. He acquitted
himself bravely. We drove the Anmangarni from the battlefield, and
were able to plunder their tula.
Iskalli convinced the Boskovi to create a new trading route.
Humakti warriors sought our help in a war party against walking
corpses. We let them share in our clan magic. They thanked us for
the aid and departed.

Enastakos, of the Vostang clan, asked us to give him cattle,

because we owed him a favor. We gave him more than he wanted.
Enastakos praised our generosity, and said that all of Dragon Pass
would hear of it.
Ferena began the Uraldas Blessing heroquest. Ferena went back to
an ancient time, a time before Umath, before Yelm, and long before
Orlanth, a time where everything was good for her four-legged
people. But things were bad for the two-legged people, who were
hungry, and asked Ferenas bulls for help. She found a high place
in order to watch the two-legs as they left. The bulls chased the
two-legs away, and the two-legs yelled and shrieked most
piteously. The biting things came, and Ferena could not protect
her children from them. So she embarked on a journey to the home
of the two-legs. First, she was attacked by biting things which
were neither large nor small. Ferena withstood the first attack of
the biting things, but was wounded. Second, she was attacked by
biting things with hollow teeth full of poison. Ferena withstood
the second attack of the biting things, but suffered further
injuries. Third, she was attacked by biting things that lurk
behind rocks. Ferena withstood the third attack of the biting
things, but again her flesh was torn. Although it took every last
bit of her strength, Ferena made it to the tula of the two-legged
people. Ferena was glad she had watched for their trail when they
were chased away by the bulls. Ferena attempted to enter the twoleg camp, but the two-legged bulls tried to capture her and pen
her up. She made the secret sign to Ernalda. Ernalda noticed the
sign, and from the greeting Ernalda gave her, Uralda recognized
Ernalda as her mother. Life is almost good, Ernalda said. But
my children have found this new thing called hunger, and I do not
know what to do Ferena said she had a plan. Ferena headed back
to her people, this time with some of Ernaldas two-legged bulls
to protect her. She told her bulls to tell the herd to get ready
for a journey to the land of the two-legs. The bulls did not want
to understand why. They also did not want to be without cows, so
they followed her, all the way to the two-leg encampment, where
they lived for some time. The bulls saw the two-legs cutting up
and eating other cows, and were afraid. Ferena said to them, A
little lost blood is nothing, when there is life to be given. The
bulls accepted what Ferena said, and troubled her no more. Later,
the cows complained that the two-legs were taking their milk, and
Uralda explained that by treating the two-leg children as their
own, there would always be two-legs. And, wherever there were twolegs, there would be fat and happy cows. This comforted them.
Ferena returned to the land of mortals, her quest successful
despite her wounds. Ferena searched through her belongings, and
found a new thing there: a cow made of clay. We knew at once that
this was a great treasure, a gift from Uralda.
1344
It was an auspicious year for heroquesting.
Iskalli led a caravan to trade with the Jenestni.

Yinkin cultists offered to perform a ritual which would make

better hunters out of our alynxes. They would be better able to
kill disease-bearing forest rats, or so the Yinkini said. We
offered them alynx kittens. They were honored, and inspected the
kittens carefully. A tear fell from the leaders eye. These
creatures are too beautiful to take from you. We will perform the
ritual, and will return the kittens to you as a token of our
esteem. Then they gathered our alynxes together, and successfully
performed their Yinkin ritual.
A large wild boar disturbed the pig-tenders, whose sows were
sorely troubled by them. Our stout warriors guarded the herd, and
saved us from loss.
A family returning from a visit to the Taralings were slain by
Praxian Sable Riders. Only the young boy, Derik, survived. We
conducted a divination. The god-talkers said that Derik would grow
to be strong and wise. He would leave us, and would become known
as a great hero. He would bring death to a deathbringer, laying
him under a cairn of skulls. He would found a new people, a nation
of outsiders, and would bring honor to the clan.
Iskalli convinced the Brown Boars to create a new trading route.
Einarth Milk-Eyes came to us with a prophecy that seemed to mean
we must become king of the tribe, and reenact our main deitys
heroquest, and six others. We were pleased to honor Einarth with
gifts. Einarth said that our generosity was a first step on our
new path, and gave us his blessing before wandering off again.
A dispute broke out between the pig priestesses and the grain
priestesses. We encouraged the opposed priestesses to find
agreement. After several heated exchanges, and several calmer
discussions, they were able to resolve their dispute.
Uralda cultists offered to perform a ritual to benefit our herds.
We accepted their offer, and gave them gifts. They thanked us for
the gifts. They gathered up our cows and then walked around them
seven times, whisking them with the Holy Tail. After performing a
lowing dance, they pronounced the ritual complete. They departed,
to the cheers and good wishes of the carls.
1345
Orlanth said we would have good luck on raids this year.
Iskalli began the heroquest of Issaries the Conciliator. Iskalli
found himself in a strange and blasted place, a place he should
have recognized but did not. He found Lhankor Mhy among the
Orlanthi there. Iskalli pointed out to Lhankor Mhy that the world
would need travelling, talking, and trade, before being remade.
Lhankor Mhy agreed to go, after chiding Iskalli for being
imprecise and using ill-chosen words. Then Iskalli saw a fearsome
warrior who had to be Storm Bull. He said, This way! There is
chaos to fight! Where? said Urox, following along. Iskalli

searched for a very long time to find the worst part of the
problem. The problem is that people are enemies, and no longer
talk with one another, he thought. This realization led Iskalli to
dig in a hillside and uncover a passageway. The group crossed the
big water by walking down the steps of the tunnel. Along the way,
Storm Bull had to fight many chaos beasts. The worst was a
gigantic chaos thing, one whose name could only be pronounced by
the dead. Iskalli let Storm Bull fight alone. Storm Bull defeated
the chaos creature, slaying it utterly. Iskalli found the Digging
Stick People, who were suffering because the Long-Noses and BigTeeth were at war. Neither Lhankor Mhy or Storm Bull were
interested in helping Iskalli make peace between the warring
peoples. Iskalli said to Storm Bull, A big important battle is
coming up, and all peoples must learn to unite, and to fight only
their real foes. Storm Bull agreed to come along, but Lhankor Mhy
did not. Iskalli met with Oriska, the Long-Nose priestess, who
said that she had no reason to make peace with the Big-Teeth. He
went immediately to talk to the Big-Teeth. Iskalli met with
Paratur, the Big-Teeth war leader, who also said peace was
impossible. Iskalli asked the Knowing God for help, interrupting
some pointless thing that Lhankor Mhy was doing. Lhankor Mhy said
that Oriska was nothing but an overgrown cow, and Paratur just a
big alynx. Then Iskalli knew to tell Storm Bull to romance Oriska,
and Oriska agreed to attend a peace parley. He told Storm Bull to
kick Paratur, and Paratur agreed as well. Then Iskalli had to
decide what to propose to them. He said, The Big-Teeth must only
attack weak and sick Long-Noses. He said, The Long-Noses must
accept that some of them will be eaten. Oriska and Paratur made
peace. Through this talking, they made trade. And with trade,
traveling began again, and the world started to knit itself back
into place. Iskalli had done his work, and prepared to leave the
realm of the gods. After the others left, Iskalli was left alone
with the tiger Paratur. Paratur purred, Now, I never did promise
not to eat you, did I? Iskalli offered to trade treasures with
him. Paratur agreed as long we did not offer him a Digging Stick
People treasure. But Iskalli offered the necklace we had won on a
prior quest. Paratur leapt upon Iskalli and tried to devour him.
Iskalli was badly mauled by the Big-Tooth, but escaped and made it
back to the realm of mortals. The people celebrated Iskallis
successful enactment of the Issaries the Conciliator myth.
Explorers came from all around to show us their maps.
Sora Goodseller arrived to tell us of three new tribes that had
arisen in the wake of our new tribe. They were the Culbrea tribe,
the Aranwyth tribe, and the Estarelder tribe. We warned the Elves
against one of the new tribes. They thanked us for our kindly
warning.
Enastakos, a warrior of the Hiordlings, wished to marry Enothea,
daughter of the chief. Harbard, the Hiord Lawspeaker, came to help
plead his case. We left the matter to Enothea, and the eternal
attraction between man and woman took its course.

Our cattle raid against the Vostangi was spotted. We took 6

captives from the Vostangi. The Grey Net helped us capturing
prisoners.
We were able to ransom the prisoners.
Beneva, daughter of Randalyar and Orngerin married Hendrick of the
Jenestni. Everyone agreed it was a fine feast, and that the couple
would do well.
The harvest was poor.
Bandits attacked our exploration party in the tula. Iskalli
attacked, but was wounded and had to return home.
Trollkin were found in the grain bins. We sacrificed them. The
god-talkers said that the signs were good. Eurmal probably liked
our gift of trollkin.
While exploring our tula, we found traces of an ancient battle. We
conducted a divination. Unfamiliar spirits appeared to our godtalkers. They said that they were the shield-bearers of Fynin, the
Legless King, who battled the Ore Digging Tribe on this very spot,
more than a thousand years ago. The great Fynin died here on that
day, but killed a score and ten of his foes. The spirits recited
the details of this battle, and said we should reenact it, so that
Fynins spirit would give us a gift. We ritually reenacted the
battle. At the height of our ritual, we heard the clash of sword
on shield, and saw the Legless King fighting his last, valiant
fight. Soon afterwards, 4 weaponthanes from far-off Tarsh came to
our tula. They said that they had dreamt about King Fynin, who
told them to come here and offer their services to us. We adopted
the weaponthanes. They told us their version of the story called
Humakt the Champion, which was well-known up in Tarsh.
The Orlundi didnt send the annual tribute they had promised.
1346
The god-talkers expected that our esteem among the other clans
would increase.
Someone took the Clay Cow. We conducted a divination to find out
who had stolen it. The god-talkers sat with leather sheets on
their heads, and finally told us that it would be found in a copse
of trees. They said anyone who tried to recover it would be safe
from all harm. We sent an exploration party to recover it. At the
cost of 4 lives, Ferena recovered the Clay Cow. She found it on
the tula of the Vostang clan.
The Orlundi raided us for 26 cows.
We stole 28 cows from the Orlundi.

Penterest, the young child of carls Enent and Perandal, was found
out in the bush, with puncture wounds on his neck. We sacrificed
to Urox for protection from chaos. The god-talkers said the signs
were good; Urox had heard our pleas.
Enastarra began the Humakt the Champion heroquest. Enastarra saw
Eurmal stab Grandfather Mortal with the new thing called Death.
She took the sword called Death from Eurmal through flattery.
Enastarras family protested her plan to sever her ties to them.
Enastarra said, Death must be impartial; I must not have kin,
lest I shield them from its embrace. Enastarra severed her ties
to her kin, becoming a stranger. Orlanth came to Humakt and
demanded the Death weapon. Enastarra told Orlanth, You will never
rule Death. Orlanth would not give up the sword, and so the two
of them fought. Orlanth was not slain, but many of his thanes
were. Orlanth came back and treated Enastarra like a cottar.
Enastarra said that death was more important than safety and
shelter. Enastarra refused to accept the cottars role, and so the
two of them fought. Orlanth was not slain, but many of his carls
were. Orlanth came back again, treating Enastarra like a carl.
Enastarra said that her severing of clan ties couldnt be
reversed. They fought for four days and four nights. Orlanth was
not slain, but many of his cottars and thralls were. Finally,
Orlanth and Enastarra became tired beyond mortal reckoning, and
could not go on. Those slain in the battle between Enastarra and
Orlanth became undead creatures and attacked. Enastarra told
Orlanth that only she could be trusted to fight undead, but the
undead regrouped. It took a day and a night for Enastarra to
destroy them all. Orlanth created a special position for her and
told her they were partners. Then Orlanth humbly asked for the
sword of Death. Enastarra gave Orlanth the sword. Enastarra
returned to the land of mortals from her successful quest. She
gained a treasure, Humakts Shield.
Spirit-talkers showed up and asked if we needed anything from
them. We did not want anything from them, but gave them
hospitality. The old one told us we would be rewarded for our
generosity.
Aransanda began the Ernalda Feeds the Tribe heroquest. But she was
unable to enter the place of the gods.
Our expedition to Mount Kero Fin returned. Iskalli and the others
examined a long-abandoned encampment, littered with human bones
and found ancient scrolls. The people were pleased to learn of
this great discovery.
Kurash, a thane of the Hendart clan, asked us for information
about Garnath, chief of the Undaroli clan. He reminded us that we
owed his people a favor. If you do not stand behind your words,
said Kurash, They are worth little, and will not erase your
obligation to us. Nonetheless, I will listen to what you have to
say. Some of the people were offended by his words to us, but we
entertained his question anyway. Kurash asked us if Garnath was

honest, or full of guile. Garnath is honest to a fault, we said.

Kurash departed, and thanked us for the information. Not long
afterwards, he returned to our tula to thank us again. Your words
gave us insight into Garnath, and we used that insight to coax
tribute from them. He gave us gifts, and the people were happy.
We raided the Vostangi and eluded their patrols. Arnbord, a Wind
Lord of the Vostangi threatened to turn the battle against us
single-handedly. Orlaront challenged the enemy to single combat.
The two champions met. To the credit of our clan, Orlaront
prevailed, and Arnbord breathed no more. We were driven off and
had no opportunity to obtain booty.
1347
The god-talkers predicted that other clans would form bad opinions
of us, no matter how generous we were.
Iskalli convinced the Ernaldori to create a new trading route.
A trickster came to laugh at us, and to offer us a blessing that
would help us on our next heroquest. We politely declined his
offer. He chortled through his nose and left.
Dangmet, a rebellious thrall belonging to the Vostang clan, came
to beg for our aid. He wanted us to protect escaped thralls from
outraged Vostang thanes. We offered to buy the rebellious thralls
from the Vostangi. Iskalli was told that there were 4 rebellious
thralls, and that they were worth five cows apiece. We paid what
they asked. We let them live free, as outlaws. The people were
glad; by rescuing unfortunate, mistreated thralls we honored our
ancestors and strengthened our clan magic. During our absence,
Dangmet slipped away and rejoined his group. He and the other
thralls soon melted into the landscape. We later heard that they
migrated to other parts of Dragon Pass, where they soon were taken
as thralls by another clan.
Aransanda said that Barntar was needed.
Maran Gor would not listen to her arguments. Aransanda convinced
Maran Gor to release Barntar by telling her love was stronger than
hate. Aransanda found Esra and Uralda in the halls of the dead,
held prisoner by Ty Kora Tek. Aransanda appealed to kinship, but
Ty Kora Tek said this meant nothing to her. She convinced Ty Kora
Tek to let them go since they still had much life in them.
Aransanda tried to leave the tunnel in the earth, but a terrible
woman stood in the way. Aransanda invoked her kinship with the
terrible woman, who agreed to let them pass. Aransanda took her
boots off, and found earth from the realm of the gods inside. We
put this earth in a jar, and considered it a great treasure.

We raided the Vostangi. We drove the Vostangi from the

battlefield, and were able to plunder their tula. We took 10
Vostang auxiliaries captive.
We were able to ransom the prisoners.
A new clan arrived and wanted to claim some of our land as their
own. We ceded them some of our land. They were the Oak Trees, and
they declared us their saviors.
We were raided by the Vostangi. We drove the Vostangi off, and
their survivors left without plundering our tula.
The Wildcats raided us for 22 cows.
Orldag came to ask us for a gift of luck and divine favor, saying
that his clan, the Isoltings, would owe us a favor. He said that
as tribe-mates, we should extend them a favor now in exchange for
one in the future. We gave more than the customary amount. Orldag
said that the Espentils were good friends, and that his people
would not forget this.
An exploratory mission came home early to report that one of them
had been taken by Tusk Riders, and could now be presumed dead. We
sent a war party to hunt for Thadart. Orlaront, who led the party,
searched valiantly for him, but there was no trace of Thadart to
be found.
Borngold, of the Narri clan, asked us to give him cattle, and
promised that his clan would owe us a favor. We gave him more than
he wanted. Borngold praised our generosity, and said that all of
Dragon Pass would hear of it.
We were raided by the Trolls. Orlaront found several trollkin
starting to eat pieces of our temple to Ernalda. He flew into a
killing rage, and none of them escaped. We drove the Trolls off,
and their survivors left without plundering our tula.
A terrible plague struck our tula. We sacrificed to Chalana Arroy,
goddess of healing. Our god-talkers said that the signs were good;
the merciful goddess looked upon our sacrifice with favor. And
indeed, the sick recovered over the next day or so. The people
rejoiced in our good fortune.
1348
Our seers predicted that the hunters would find little game this
year.
A moot was convened to choose a new king. Both Enderos and
Kagradus were supported by many worthy sponsors. We kept our
silence until the other clans chose a candidate. Both candidates
proved their generosity. Kagradus was chosen to rule.

Kagradus, of the Peluski, got ready for the rites of kingship. We

sacrificed to the gods so that Kagradus might perform well in the
rite of kingship. Our priests said the gods were pleased with our
sacrifice. Kagradus completed the rites of kingship. The
celebration lasted for days.
He
was too bright, and his blindness could not be cured. He said,
Kill me if you must; I will not be deterred. The foreign god let
him pass. Jarnandar healed many storm people, but was then
confronted with Orlanth, who wanted to kill him. Jarnandar healed
his wounded judgment; he made him one of his attendants. The
Unholy Trio appeared in the world and caused trouble at Orlanths
court. Orlanths brother, Kolat, argued with them. So Malia first
used her terrible gift, the scar of disease, and made Kolat
unwell. Jarnandar defeated Malia without hurting her, and healed
Kolat. The Unholy Trio embroiled the world in war. Storm Bull
decided to kill all of them, starting with his brother, Ragnaglar.
They fought; Urox wounded Ragnaglar and was ready to kill him.
Jarnandar threw himself between the two combatants. Storm Bull
would not relent. He learned two important secrets, which allowed
him to confront Urox. Urox did not kill Ragnaglar that day. King
Heort was killed in the war against Chaos, and Humakt tried to
prevent Jarnandar from healing him. Jarnandar healed the scar of
certitude under Humakts tongue. He then healed King Heort, who
kept people alive while Chalana Arroy and the other gods went to
hell to heal Yelm and the world. Jarnandar returned to the land of
mortals from his successful quest. The rifts within our tribe were
healed.
Bolik, a hunter of the Hiord clan asked permission to hunt a great
white stag on our land. We said he could hunt it in cooperation
with our own hunters. Together, they caught the stag. It was a
magnificent beast indeed, and there was glory enough for both
clans.
A man with the face of a Tusk Rider came to our tula and claimed
to be Thadart. He said his disfigurement was a grim joke of the
Tusk Riders god. Our clan leaders sought to convince the people
that he should be allowed to return. Iskallis eloquent words
persuaded them that this was indeed Thadart returned, and not some
terrible monster. The people welcomed him back, and there was much
rejoicing.
Ingard was bullied and insulted by a pair of Orlundi weaponthanes
at their clan market. The ring said that Ingard should forget
their insults. They did not simply insult us! Ingard cried.
They said the gods despised us! We must punish them for this vile
calumny! We sent for shamans to curse them. Shamans came and said
they would curse the Orlundi for the low price of 15 cows. We

accepted the arrangement. The shamans said that the spirits had
entered the dreams of their targets, and rearranged the secret
places of their souls. Soon we heard that the Orlundi had
developed an unquenchable hunger for lichen, and an overweening
passion for the company of their sheep.
We were raided by the Beastfolk. We drove the Beastfolk from the
battlefield, striking them down as they fled.
We suffered a curse, and our children, both boys and girls, began
to grow beards. We conducted a divination. The spirits of our
ancestors said that the Blue Jays had paid shamans to lay this
curse on us. We sent for shamans to break the curse. Shamans came
and said they would break the curse for the low price of 30 cows.
We accepted the arrangement. They smeared foul-smelling ointments
on the faces of the children, causing some of the younger ones to
weep. They danced about and rolled on the ground. They then told
the children to wash their faces in the creek. They said the
beards would not come back.
The harvest was plentiful.
Bastakos and Eonislara got divorced. Eonislara made unreasonable
claims on him for a settlement. The ring stayed out of the matter.
Acting as our emissary, Iskalli sought information from the
Peluski. Do you know any secret stories of the gods? he asked.
Their chief, Kagradus, instructed his god-talkers to tell us the
story of Orlanth the Justice Bringer. It was a story we already
knew.
Acting as our emissary, Iskalli sought information from the
Orlundi. Do you know any secret stories of the gods? he asked.
They would not tell Iskalli what he wanted to know.
1349
The god-talkers heard whispers in a strange language, but could
not make out the meaning.
Tarkalor, a thane of the Wildcat clan, asked us for the details of
the Chalana Arroy Heals the Scars story. We told him what he
wanted to know. He thanked us and departed. After Tarkalor left,
our god-talkers said that our clan magic had suffered because we
aided the irreverent. They said that Korol, the chief of the
Wildcats, is so impious that the gods want nothing to do with him.
Warriors from another clan set fire to a stead, destroying it and
causing injuries to the people inside it. We performed a
divination to identify the culprit. The priests and priestesses
examined the signs and sat for a long time with leather sheets
over their heads. The Knowing God told them that the stead burners
were from the Hendart clan. They were sent by Eonislara, who
thinks she was wronged by us in her recent divorce settlement. We
decided to take action against the Hendarti. We demanded

compensation from them. The Hendart ring listened to our claim,

and weighed the evidence from the divination we performed. They
compensated us for the damage done to the stead, and for the burns
suffered by our people.
Aransanda began the Ernalda Feeds the Tribe heroquest. Daga, god
of drought, attacked Aransanda. Aransanda survived Dagas blows.
Aransanda went to the elves and asked for their help. Aransanda
couldnt persuade the elves that she was no traitor. The elves
agreed that Dagas drought might affect them, and gave her the
seed she needed. The seed burrowed into the earth and led
Aransanda to Maran Gor, who was keeping Barntar as her thrall.
Aransanda convinced Maran Gor to release Barntar by telling her
that without him, the people would starve. Aransanda found Esra
and Uralda in the halls of the dead, held prisoner by Ty Kora Tek.
Aransanda invoked their kinship, and Ty Kora Tek returned Esra and
Uralda to her. Aransanda tried to leave the tunnel in the earth,
but a terrible woman stood in the way. Aransanda invoked her
kinship with the terrible woman, who agreed to let them pass. The
people swelled with pride at thoughts of our fat, healthy, fertile
cows.
Our explorers found a cache of loot in the Dragonewt Wildlands,
and the dragonewts did not stop them from taking it. Our explorers
found a cache of loot in the Dragonewt Wildlands, and the
dragonewts did not stop them from taking it. Our explorers found a
cache of loot in the Dragonewt Wildlands, and the dragonewts did
not stop them from taking it.
Acting as our emissary, Iskalli sought information from the Narri.
Do you know any secret stories of the gods? he asked. Their
chief, Fantarl, instructed his god-talkers to tell us the story of
Issaries the Conciliator. It was a story we already knew.
A beautiful woman appeared in the woods. Some said that she
ensnared our men. We carefully questioned the menfolk to see if
any of them had been with her. Three men admitted to having been
with the woman, who they say had eyes that were impossible to
resist. We told them to use better judgment in the future.
Dragonewts came and threatened us. We promised not to offend them
any further.
The harvest was poor.
Korlmhy died of a terrible curse when plants sprouted from his
body. We cast a curse-lifting spell on all of the men of the clan.
3 carls died. One of them was married; so we knew that he had
committed adultery with the mysterious woman of the woods.
Acting as our emissary, Iskalli sought information from the Blue
Jays. Do you know any secret stories of the gods? she asked.
Their chief, Arkilla, instructed her god-talkers to tell us the
story of Issaries the Conciliator. It was a story we already knew.

Tarkalor of the Oak Tree clan offered us gifts. We gave Tarkalor a

reciprocal gift. He said we were very generous, and that he would
say so to others.
Minara was accused of deliberately spreading disease. We tried
magic to cure her madness. We found that she could not be helped;
the madness was too strong in her. We outlawed her. She left our
tula, muttering.
Ferena began the Uraldas Blessing heroquest. Ferena was unable to
enter the realm of the gods.
We were raided by the Undaroli. As the battle began, Orlaront
remembered a powerful dream he had the night before, a dream that
could have meant victory or defeat. He acquitted himself bravely,
saving the lives of several of our other warriors. We drove the
Undaroli off, and their survivors left without plundering our
tula. Derik the Praxian-Hater distinguished himself in the
fighting.
1350
The leaves of the oak trees fell off early, but nobody agreed what
this signified.
Second, she was attacked by
biting things with sharp teeth that cut flesh. Ferena withstood
the second attack of the biting things, but suffered further
injuries. Third, she was attacked by biting things that swoop down
from the air.

Over the next few days, people from all over
Dragon Pass brought us cows, thanking for having performed the
Blessings of Uralda heroquest, and bringing health and fertility
to everyones herds.
Borngold, a thane of the Orlundi clan, asked us for information
about Aslandar, chief of the Ernaldori clan. He said that as
tribe-mates, we should extend them a favor now in exchange for one
in the future. We endeavored to answer his questions. Borngold
asked us if Aslandar was a holy chief. Aslandar is very holy. we
said. Borngold departed, and thanked us for the information. Not
long afterwards, he returned to our tula to thank us again. Your
words gave us insight into Aslandar, and we used that insight to
greatly improve our relations with the Ernaldori. He gave us
gifts, and the people were happy.
A beautiful woman appeared in the woods. Some said that she
ensnared our men. We sent searchers to capture her. Our best
hunters searched long and hard, using their most powerful magics.
They brought the woman back to us, tied with ropes. She would not
speak to us. Our storytellers thought her some kind of kin to the
aldryami, or elves. We gifted her, and asked her to convey our
goodwill to her people. She warned us that our men had been
dangerously infected, because we had offended the elves. She told
us how to mix a potion to cure the infection before it showed
itself. She also said that the trouble with the elves would get
worse, if we werent careful.
We raided the Marsh Ducks and eluded their patrols. We drove the
Marsh Ducks from the battlefield, and were able to plunder their
tula.
A woman from the Peluski clan came to sell us thralls. We bought 5
thralls. Then we freed them to become cottars in our clan.
Aransanda led a caravan to trade with the Six Brothers.
The harvest was plentiful. All of the other clans in our tribe
suffered bad harvests.
Our explorers successfully skirmished with nomads in the harsh
plains of Prax.

Baranthos led a caravan to trade with the Isoltings.

Furthering a long-festering feud, young boys of the Isolting clan
came here to attack a boy of our clan. We took them back to their
clan. Isolting leaders said that we had acted honorably, and said
that they hoped this would be the end of the fight between the
families of Glendara and Rangarda.
Iskalli led a caravan to trade with the Isoltings.
1351
The god-talkers sensed the presence of disease spirits.
Enastarra began the Lhankor Mhy Finds the Truth heroquest.
Enastarra found herself in a strange and blasted place, where
something was wrong with the wind. There were other Orlanthi
there, dressed in an unfamiliar manner. She thought one of them
must be Issaries. Enastarra said to Issaries, I know you didnt
intend to sell the truth, so I will allow you to come along.
Issaries said, I have my own reasons for going with you. Then
Enastarra saw a fearsome warrior who looked like Storm Bull. She
said, This way! There is chaos to fight! Where? said Urox,
following along. Issaries took Enastarra and Storm Bull along a
short cut. Along the way, Storm Bull had to fight many chaos
beasts. The worst was a gigantic chaos thing, one whose name could
only be pronounced by the dead. Enastarra let Storm Bull fight
alone. Storm Bull defeated the chaos creature, slaying it utterly.
Issaries led the others through a short cut to the place where the
truth might be found. They were challenged by foreigners who asked
Enastarra to participate in a Meeting Contest. Enastarra tried to
win one contest and lose another. The first was a pain contest,
which the foreigner won. Enastarra then won the memorizing
contest. The foreigners gifted Enastarra with magic and allowed
the party to proceed. Issaries took Enastarra to the right place.
But then he got distracted, showing more interest in an argument
between mastodons and sabretooth tigers than in taking Enastarra
to the god that bought the truth. Enastarra said, The truth is
more important than squabbling animals! Issaries told her that
her words were wise. Issaries took Enastarra to find Grandbread,
the god who was going to pound the truth into meal and eat it.
Enastarra challenged Grandbread to a game of questions. The game
went on so long that Grandbread became hungry and tried to eat the
truth in its sharp and twisted form, but the truth poked a hole in
his stomach and fell back out of him again. Why did you do that?
Enastarra asked. Grandbread couldnt answer without looking
foolish, and thus lost the contest. Enastarra tried to put the
truth back into its pure form. Enastarra put a leather sheet over
her head and thought. But nothing came to mind. Then Issaries came
in and asked a foolish question. Enastarra scolded him for
interrupting. Enastarra tried to polish its surfaces. But any
polished area quickly tarnished again. Then Issaries came in and
asked a foolish question. Enastarra scolded him for interrupting.
Enastarra tried to untwist its loops. But every loop twisted up
again, worse than before. Then Issaries came in and asked a

foolish question. Enastarra answered his question. Issaries left.

When Enastarra looked at the truth, it wasnt twisted any more!
Storm Bull got bored and wandered away; Issaries bade farewell to
Enastarra. Enastarra returned to the land of people from her
successful quest. Our god-talkers suddenly knew more stories of
the gods.
Derik, whose family was slain by Sable Riders, became a
singleminded young warrior, unpopular with the older weaponthanes.
We sent Derik on a raid against Sable Riders.
Derik is back, triumphant. He led our warriors to a Sable Rider
encampment, where he slew many and pillaged their goods. None of
our warriors were so much as scratched in the fight.
Orstalor spoke for the warriors when he said that they were
stretched too thin, and that more fighters were needed. We sent
Iskalli on a mission to find the best warriors available.
Priestesses of Chalana Arroy said they would heal our sick and
wounded in exchange for a future favor. We declined their offer,
and offered them gifts in return. They declined our gifts, saying
that it was not yet the time. The priestesses said little else,
but the people saw that they were displeased, and so were
displeased in turn.
Acting as our emissary, Aransanda sought an alliance with the
Hiordlings. They were pleased with the generous gifts we sent.
Aransanda said to them, We are both blessed by the gods, and our
alliance would please them further. Their chief, Dorasor, agreed
that our two clans should be allies. The alliance we make today
is a tribute to Orlanth and Ernalda, said Dorasor.
An ill-omen vexed us when a young, unmarried woman of our clan saw
the shadow of a bird pass over her. We sacrificed to the gods for
luck. The god-talkers said the signs were good, and that the bird
shadow which passed over Minara should be ignored.
Aransanda convinced the Hiordlings to create a new trading route.
Humakti warriors said we should give them permission to enter our
tula and fight the undead. We granted it, and sacrificed to
Humakt. They praised us as a wise and honorable clan. They found
spectres and ghouls everywhere, and put them to the sword. We knew
that our lands were haunted, but had no idea just how much danger
our people were in. We were overjoyed, and so gave them gifts.
The Uroxi warrior Kenstrel the Keen tried to kill Kestalds
cattle, claiming they were broo-infested. Voskandora ritually
determined that Kenstrel was mistaken. Gruffly apologizing for his
error, he departed.
1352

The god-talkers said we would be blessed with many children this

year.
We were approached by Illator, a noble of Tarsh. He sought
mercenaries for a northern war.
When our warriors were serving as mercenaries up north, ducks came
and stole from our herds. The carls were alarmed. Enastarra
explained to them that these small losses would be more than
offset by the cows our returning warriors would soon be bringing
us.
Orlaront began the Elmal Guards the Stead heroquest. Orlanth left
on his great quest, and Orlaront stayed to guard the stead. A
Chaos creature called the Eater of Skin came and attacked.
Orlaront thrust his spear at it. The spear pierced the creatures
eye, and it screamed in anger. The creature ripped at Orlaront
with one of its seven mouths, and tore open Orlaronts chest.
Orlaront became bright, in order to blind the Eater of Skin. The
creature reared back, shrieking. It tore at Orlaront, tearing his
arm from its socket. Orlaront easily slew the sightless creature
with his other arm, and the people rejoiced. Our worshippers, back
in the ritual ground, had a chance to help Orlaront knit himself
back together. We gave of our tears, weeping and wailing, so that
our tears soaked the ritual ground. Orlaront knitted himself back
together and everyone, whether from the Espentil clan or the Storm
Tribe, rejoiced. More Chaos enemies came, including the Author of
Sores. Orlaront lanced her with a spear. The Author of Sores shook
and howled. Green muck oozed from the creatures body, and it fell
upon Orlaront melting whatever flesh it touched. Orlaront clubbed
her about the head. Her head came off, but leapt forward and tore
at Orlaronts chest. Soon the creatures head stopped moving, and
then the rest of her did, too. The Author of Sores was slain, and
the people cheered. Once again, our worshippers were given a
chance to help Orlaront knit himself back together. We gave of our
tears, weeping and wailing, so that our tears soaked the ritual
ground. Orlaront knitted himself back together and everyone,
whether from the Espentil clan or the Storm Tribe, rejoiced. Then
came the Maker of Bad Growth, another Chaos enemy. Orlaront threw
his spear into its ghastly mouth. The spear came back out through
its neck, and the monster writhed on the spear like a drunken
puppet. Then the Maker of Bad Growth turned the spear into a
serpent, and the serpent bit Orlaront, so that the poison of
growth ran through his body. Orlaront burned him with his
brightness. The creature caused Orlaronts face to swell until it
fell from the front of his skull, and writhed upon the ground.
Orlaront ran around the Maker of Bad Growth on a hallowed horse.
The creature became dizzy, and its brains turned to pink ooze and
dripped out of its ears. It jumped on top of Orlaronts horse,
smothering him. But when its head was emptied of brains, the
creature expired, and the people shouted in joy and relief. For
the third time, our worshippers were given a chance to help
Orlaront knit himself back together. We gave of our tears, weeping
and wailing, so that our tears soaked the ritual ground. Orlaront

knitted himself back together and everyone, whether from the

Espentil clan or the Storm Tribe, rejoiced. Orlaront was
approached by a lost love, who urged him to run away, and forget
guarding the Storm Tribes stead. Orlaront said, I cannot abandon
these people. His old love revealed itself as the Chaos creature
called the Teller of Lies, and said, Cursed Elmal, you always put
others before yourself, and we creatures of Chaos cannot fight
that! In frustration, it departed. A blind oracle told Orlaront
that Orlanth was dead, and that he should take the crown of the
Storm Tribe, in order to protect it. Orlaront said, I would not
be loyal to Orlanth if I believed him so easily defeated. Unable
to shake Orlaronts steadfast loyalty, the Teller of Lies could do
nothing but slink away. The next day, the Emperor came, but this
time Orlaront knew his visitor was the Teller of Lies. Orlaront
gave the Teller of Lies a magnificent horse, and said it housed
his soul. Orlaront promised to serve Chaos. Teller of Lies was so
pleased, and so hungry, that it devoured the horse Orlaront had
given him. But Orlaront had tricked it; the horse was not his
soul, but was also Orlaront in his bright entirety. Now Orlaront
was inside the Teller of Lies, and could see that inside the Chaos
servant was Nothing. Its ever-shifting forms masked only
emptiness. Armed with this knowledge, Elmal tore it apart from the
inside, using the sharpened edges of the shield Orlanth had given
him. And the Teller of Lies, revealed as Nothing, was destroyed.
The weaponthanes, proud of Orlaronts feat, were reconciled to the
clan.
Derik Single-Path told us he was leaving to seek new challenges.
We sacrificed to the gods to protect Derik on his travels. He
thanked us for our generosity. The things I will do, I will do
not only for vengeance, but to honor you and honor our gods, he
said. Perhaps one day we will meet again, and I will have
accomplishments to share with you.
Baranwolf

came to ask us for a gift of luck and divine favor,

us that we owed his clan, the Taralings, a favor. We
than the customary amount. Baranwolf said that the
were good friends, and that his people would not forget

Broyan attempted the heroquest of Orlanth and Aroka. He was unable

to enter the place of the gods.
The warriors returned from the campaign against the northern
empire. There, they saw King Arims magical twins drop a range of
hills on the chaotic foe. They gathered goodly loot, and brought
it back to us. Because all had sacrificed, all were rewarded with
loot from the war.

We sent Aransanda to the Zethnoring tula to try to exchange
treasures with them. Their chief, Ernaldness, agreed to trade the
Grey Net for the Flesh Man.
We were raided by the Trolls. We drove the Trolls off, and their
survivors left without plundering our tula.
1353
There were many swirling gusts of wind, but nobody was sure what
this meant.
Iskalli could not persuade the Rune Ducks to create a new trading
route.
The poem caused
the cube to crumble, and the Knowing God was freed. The Knowing
God agreed to make the Marks On Bark Clan part of the Storm Tribe,
so long as this new tribe had fierce warriors. Broyan found
Vadrus, who had decided to fight Yinkin and his Cat Clan. He
challenged Vadrus to a contest of strength. Vadrus accepted the
challenge. They arm-wrestled, and Broyan won. You have bested me,
so I am obliged to do as you wish, Vadrus said, I will seek a
foe other than Yinkin, and may even attend this confederation moot
of yours so long as that accursed cat is not among the
chieftains there. Broyan found more chieftains to bring their
clans to the confederation moot, but when they got there, they
fell to fighting, and blamed him for making contradictory
promises. He offered to fight each and every one of them. They
were quite ready to do this, and Broyan was preparing for the
battle when Ernalda brought him implements of tribal regalia. She
brought the Chest of Torcs, with which he could gift the clan
leaders. She brought the Hall of Understanding, where people would
settle their differences by talking them out. She brought the
Crown of Authority, which made people respect his sacral powers
and pledge allegiance to him. Most of the clans agreed to make the
tribe, but there were still some who were stubborn. Then warriors
of the Night Tribe came and attacked the quarrelling clans. Broyan
led the fight against the Night People. Everyone banded together

to fight these hungry enemies. After they defeated the night

warriors, they acclaimed Broyan as their king. Broyan returned to
the land of mortals, his quest successful. Broyan had splendid
items from the gods realm to add to our tribal regalia, just like
the items Ernalda gave to Orlanth when he made the Storm Tribe.
We received an offer of a magic charm from wandering spirittalkers, as a goad to action regarding Einarth Milk-Eyess
prophecy. We asked them to explain themselves. The older one said
that we were slow to heroquest. He pointed out that we were not
even king of the tribe yet. We accepted the charm and gave gifts
in kind.
A milk-white calf was born into Orendals herd. Orendal kept the
calf, and our herds increased. The carls were pleased by the
rings decision.
Broyan attempted the heroquest of Orlanth and Aroka. He was unable
to enter the place of the gods.
Illator of Tarsh came to pay us for our warriors mercenary
services, but tried to get us to take foreign coins instead of the
cows he promised. We insisted that Illator bring us cows, as hed
promised. He returned to Tarsh to do so.
The Orlundi sought our help when elves demanded the right to
worship at their shrine to Flamal. We told the Orlundi they should
allow the elves limited use of their temple. The Orlundi agreed to
consider this, if we could convince the elves to limit their use
of the temple. We approached the elves, and told them that they
were not entitled to take over a temple they had not built. We
urged them to agree to our proposal. The elves would not listen to
reason, and departed dissatisfied, the matter unresolved.
A moot was convened to choose a new king. Both Fantarl and Harmast
were supported by many worthy sponsors. We were among the first to
speak out for Harmast. He showed us the full generosity of clan
Turtle. Fantarl was chosen to rule.
Fantarl, of the Narri, got ready for the rites of kingship. We
celebrated with influential thanes of other clans. The thanes were
impressed by our generosity. Fantarl completed the rites of
kingship. The celebration lasted for days.
Baranthos came back from the mountains and told us that he had
found the lair of a wyrm. We sent Jarstakos to take the treasure
without killing the wyrm. Jarstakos found the wyrm to be quite
intelligent, although not quite intelligent enough. Jarstakos
taught it how to gamble, and beat it handily at dice.
Karendra of the Peluski clan gave us five fine horses, and asked
for our support in a matter that would soon come before the moot.
We gave a reciprocal gift. At the moot, we supported the Isoltings

cause. The other clans agreed with us, and the Isoltings won their
case.
Survivors of an unfortunate expedition to the harsh plains of Prax
returned to our tula. Some of them were wounded. 5 lay dead in
Prax, their bones turning to chalk under that lands baleful sun.
A group of tricksters offered us a gift; it was a banner with the
motion rune painted on it. We accepted the gift. The tricksters
capered away, singing a vulgar song about cheese and wine.
1354
The signs for calving looked bad.
Thadart, the warrior whose visage was made monstrous by the alien
god of the Tusk Riders, said that other members of the clan had
dishonored him, and demanded that the clan ring reproach them.
Iskalli sought to persuade the people to treat him with greater
respect. Enastarra sought to persuade the people to treat him with
greater respect. They agreed that they had not behaved properly
towards Thadart, and promised to mend their ways. Thadart said he
had much ale for them to drink, if they would do him the honor of
accepting his hospitality. The people drank long into the night,
and the matter was settled.
Stoically did Broyan take the ninety-nine blows meant for Orlanth.
Broyan gathered weapons, then other enemies attacked him. Gagarth
buffeted Broyan with the awesome Wind From Above. He returned a
punch that stunned Gagarth, and Broyan took the Wind From Above.
Broyan slew trolls with his klanth and took the Darkwind from
them, though he was wounded in the battle. Broyan blinded the Dark
Woman by spitting Widebrew at her. Broyan found another
heroquester, who proposed to take the role of Orlanths brother
Urox, saying it was his right. The Uroxi grumbled but came along.
When Broyan arrived to fight Aroka, he saw many Chaos creatures
swarming towards him. The Storm Bull told him to go fight Aroka,
leaving the Chaos creatures to him. But he stayed and fought at
Storm Bulls side. They defeated the Chaos creatures, but Broyan
received a wound that would not heal. At last Broyan found the
lair of Aroka, and fought the dragon. Aroka tried to destroy
Orlanth. The storm god released the Four Winds, blinding the
dragons eyes. He released the Upper Wind, which dried out the
enemys tongues. He captured Arokas breath inside the magical
Sack of Winds and threw it away. Then Orlanth seized its jaws and
tore the dragon asunder. Broyan successfully completed the
heroquest, and was cheered by all. He brought back the magical Bag
of Winds from the place of the gods.
Illator of Tarsh finally brought us the cows he promised. We
feasted in Illators honor. Although he was distant at first, our

fine ale eventually loosened the line of Illators shoulders. He

told us many wondrous stories of the Kingdom of Tarsh and its
campaigns against the cruel Lunar Empire. Half of the cows died
shortly after Illators departure.
Our cattle raid against the Vostangi was spotted. We managed to
withdraw while the Vostangi tried to maneuver their troops.
We reorganized as a Peace clan.
Aransanda could not persuade the Blue Jays to create a new trading
route.
We were raided by the Horse-Spawn. Orlaront led a flanking
maneuver against the riders, We drove the Horse-Spawn off, and
their survivors left without plundering our tula.
Jarnandar began the Chalana Arroy Heals the Scars heroquest. But
he was unable to enter the realm of the gods.
Trollkin were found in the grain bins. We sacrificed them. The
god-talkers said that the signs were good. Eurmal probably liked
our gift of trollkin.
1355
Orlanth said we would have good luck on raids this year.
Brandig of the Oak Tree clan came before us, bearing gifts and
seeking sponsorship for joining the tribe. We offered to speak for
them at the moot. The other clans listened to our praise of the
Oak Trees, and grudgingly agreed to let them join. They did
grumble about how much their own joining had cost them and how
little it had cost the new members.

The elves made peace with us, and gave us gifts,
including items made of cleverly woven twigs and finely-carved
wood.
Uralda cultists offered to perform a ritual to benefit our herds.
We let them share in our clan magic. They thanked us for helping
to make the cows of Dragon Pass fertile and happy. They gathered
up our cows and then walked around them seven times, whisking them
with the Holy Tail. After performing a lowing dance, they
pronounced the ritual complete. They departed, to the cheers and
good wishes of the carls.
We raided the Vostangi. Orlaront had the chance to fight like a
hero. He acquitted himself bravely, saving the lives of several of
our other warriors. We drove the Vostangi from the battlefield,
and were able to plunder their tula. We took 11 Vostang
auxiliaries captive.
We decided to free the prisoners.
Thadart, the warrior with the Tusk Rider face, implored us to find
him a bride. Clan leaders promised to find him a bride. After long
discussions with a number of friendly clans, we found a prospect
for him: Kistrald of the Taraling clan. She was neither lovely nor
clever, but when Thadarts set eyes upon her, both were filled
with love. The people, who had embraced Thadart and his cause,
rejoiced. They set about making a wedding celebration that would
be remembered in Dragon Pass for generations to come.
The harvest was poor.
Oranda, a trader of the Six Brothers clan, warned us to be wary of
another trader, Eonistaran of the Zethnoring clan. We promised to
be wary of Eonistaran.
We sent Baranthos with gifts to the Wildcats. They were pleased
with our generosity. They said that we were their friends, and
that we could call on them in the future if we needed to.
Mosdorl, Estavos, and Jotisan caused trouble at the Ernaldori
market. The clan ring scolded them. They said that they were only
having a little fun, and that the traders were exaggerating the
trouble they had caused.
Nobles from some of the clans of our tribe came to us, seeking
allies in their dispute with the king. We argued that they were
not giving the king a fair chance to rule. The thanes of the other
clans seemed satisfied by our arguments.
1356

The god-talkers learned that if we sent no more than a dozen

warriors, our first cattle raid this year would be extraordinarily
successful.
Jarstakos began the heroquest of Issaries the Conciliator.
Jarstakos found himself in a strange and blasted place, a place he
should have recognized but did not. He found Lhankor Mhy among the
Orlanthi there. Jarstakos pointed out to Lhankor Mhy that the
world would need travelling, talking, and trade, before being
remade. Lhankor Mhy refused to leave his studies behind to wander
the broken world on a fruitless mission. Jarstakos told Lhankor
Mhy that he would learn new things on this journey. Lhankor Mhy
was intrigued, and agreed to go along. Then Jarstakos saw a
fearsome warrior who had to be Storm Bull. He said, This way!
There is chaos to fight! Where? said Urox, following along.
Jarstakos searched for a very long time to find the worst part of
the problem. The problem is that people are enemies, and no longer
talk with one another, he thought. This realization led Jarstakos
to walk through the Stream of Silver Swords until all three
questers were bleeding from wounds to the legs. Someone let hatred
and mistrust into the world, and they must be tamed, he thought.
This realization led Jarstakos to dig in a hillside and uncover a
passageway. The group crossed the big water by walking down the
steps of the tunnel. Along the way, Storm Bull had to fight many
chaos beasts. The worst was a gigantic chaos thing, one whose name
could only be pronounced by the dead. Jarstakos let Storm Bull
fight alone. Storm Bull defeated the chaos creature, slaying it
utterly. Jarstakos found the Digging Stick People, who were
suffering because the Long-Noses and Big-Teeth were at war.
Neither Lhankor Mhy or Storm Bull were interested in helping
Jarstakos make peace between the warring peoples. Jarstakos said
to Storm Bull, A big important battle is coming up, and all
peoples must learn to unite, and to fight only their real foes.
Storm Bull agreed to come along, but Lhankor Mhy did not.
Jarstakos met with Oriska, the Long-Nose priestess, who said that
she had no reason to make peace with the Big-Teeth. He went
immediately to talk to the Big-Teeth. Jarstakos met with Paratur,
the Big-Teeth war leader, who also said peace was impossible.
Jarstakos asked the Knowing God for help, interrupting some
pointless thing that Lhankor Mhy was doing. Lhankor Mhy said that
Oriska was nothing but an overgrown cow, and Paratur just a big
alynx. Then Jarstakos knew to tell Storm Bull to romance Oriska,
and Oriska agreed to attend a peace parley. He told Storm Bull to
kick Paratur, and Paratur agreed as well. Then Jarstakos had to
decide what to propose to them. He said, The Big-Teeth must only
attack weak and sick Long-Noses. He said, The Long-Noses must
accept that some of them will be eaten. Oriska and Paratur made
peace. Through this talking, they made trade. And with trade,
traveling began again, and the world started to knit itself back
into place. Jarstakos had done his work, and prepared to leave the
realm of the gods. After the others left, Jarstakos was left alone
with the tiger Paratur. Paratur purred, Now, I never did promise
not to eat you, did I? Jarstakos offered to trade treasures with
him. Paratur agreed as long we did not offer him a Digging Stick

People treasure. Paratur gave Jarstakos a necklace of stones that

looked like tiger eyes and let him pass. The people celebrated
Jarstakoss successful enactment of the Issaries the Conciliator
myth. Explorers came from all around to show us their maps.
We learned that the Ernaldori had declared a feud against us.
We stole 27 cows from the Vostangi.
Arene, a young warrior of our clan and Marlesta, a young warrior
of the Ernaldori clan said that they had made themselves blood
sisters, and that we should follow their example and end our feud
with the Ernaldori. We decided to make peace with the Ernaldori
clan. The Ernaldori refused to end the feud.
Our expedition to Mount Kero Fin returned. There Sartark
encountered explorers of the Ernaldori clan, who so offended
Sartark with their lack of reverence towards the mother goddess
that Sartark scolded them for their impiety, and said that they
were lower than the dirt that lodged in the scales of slithering
snakes. They responded in kind with many harsh words about our
clan.
We approached the Ernaldori clan with an offer of peace. We
offered to lend them some of our magic. They were pleased by our
generosity, and we ended the feud.
Eonistaran, a trader of the Zethnoring clan, offered us ten cows
to perform trickster magic on a rival trader, Oranda of the Six
Brothers clan. We refused him, and then warned Oranda of his plan.
Oranda thanked us for our warning, and said she had a trick in
store for Eonistaran. She gifted us with some flutes and whistles.
Not long afterwards, word reached us that Eonistaran had been
maneuvered into a bad trade with Oranda, and blamed us for
alerting her to his plans.
The harvest was plentiful.
Aransanda began the Ernalda Feeds the Tribe heroquest. But she was
unable to enter the place of the gods.
While clearing a patch of forest, Salinarg was injured by an
unseen archer. To find who had done this, we performed an augury.
We saw patterns in the entrails. First, a seed. Then, a stalk.
Then, a man. Then, a man with an arrow. This meant the attacker
was one of the plant people called Aldryami, or elves. We stepped
up our patrols.
Aransanda began the Ernalda Feeds the Tribe heroquest. But she was
unable to enter the place of the gods.
1357
Our god-talkers saw blood on a wall, and feared for the safety of
our fighters.

The elves made peace
with us, and gave us gifts, including rare seeds and exotic gums
and resins.
A trickster came to laugh at us, and to offer us a blessing that
would help us on our next heroquest. We politely declined his
offer. He chortled through his nose and left.
We were raided by the Praxians. We were driven from the
battlefield and looted.
A son, Palagor, was born to Thadart and Kistrald. The people were
concerned, because Palagor shared his fathers facial deformity.
We conducted a ritual to protect Thadarts future children from
this curse. Our god-talkers said that they could not be sure, but
that they thought the signs were good.
We heard that the terrible Praxian hero Jaldon Goldentooth was
cutting a swath through Dragon Pass, and heading our way. We
prepared ourselves by laying traps for Goldentooths horde.
Goldentooths horde bypassed our tula, but ravaged our neighbors,
the Taralings.
The harvest was plentiful.
Ingard, a warrior of the Vostangi, wished to marry Brenna,
daughter of the chief. Orstalor, the Vostang Lawspeaker, came to
help plead his case. We left the matter to Brenna, and the eternal
attraction between man and woman took its course.
Yaransor began the Chalana Arroy Heals the Scars heroquest. But
she was unable to enter the realm of the gods.
Our traders saw that the Taralings had been devastated by Jaldon
Goldentooths raiders. We helped to rebuild their fortifications.
Our carls worked alongside theirs, and friendship grew between our
clans.

Shamans came to our tula and took credit for our prosperity. We
gifted them. They thanked us profusely, and said they would
continue to urge the spirits to aid us.
Derik Furman, now the leader of a band of nomad warriors, sought
our help in the battle against Jaldon Goldentooth. We gave him
gifts. You are generous, my old clanmates. With this we can hire
mercenaries from Tarsh. If Jaldon falls, you can take part of the
credit.
1358
The god-talkers feared for our barley crop.
Yaransor began the Chalana Arroy Heals the Scars heroquest.
Yaransor found herself in a strange palace, where foreigners
requested her healing aid. She healed them, and then went to heal
the wounded Storm People. She healed the foreign people. One of
the foreigners blocked Yaransors way and threatened to kill her.
He was too bright, and his blindness could not be cured. She said,
Kill me if you must; I will not be deterred. The foreign god let
her pass. Yaransor healed many storm people, but was then
confronted with Orlanth, who wanted to kill her. Yaransor could
not heal Orlanth completely. He made Yaransor one of his
attendants. The Unholy Trio appeared in the world and caused
trouble at Orlanths court. Orlanths brother, Kolat, argued with
them. So Malia first used her terrible gift, the scar of disease,
and made Kolat unwell. Yaransor defeated Malia without hurting
her, and healed Kolat. The Unholy Trio embroiled the world in war.
Storm Bull decided to kill all of them, starting with his brother,
Ragnaglar. They fought; Urox wounded Ragnaglar and was ready to
kill him. Yaransor threw herself between the two combatants. Storm
Bull would not relent. She learned two important secrets, which
allowed her to confront Urox. Urox did not kill Ragnaglar that
day. King Heort was killed in the war against Chaos, and Humakt
tried to prevent Yaransor from healing him. Yaransor healed the
scar of certitude under Humakts tongue. She then healed King
Heort, who kept people alive while Chalana Arroy and the other
gods went to hell to heal Yelm and the world. Yaransor returned to
the land of mortals from her successful quest. The rifts within
our tribe were healed.
Our cattle raid against the Orlundi was spotted. We managed to
withdraw while the Orlundi tried to maneuver their troops.
Derik Furmans warriors brought him into our clan hall, gravely
wounded. He had slain Jaldon Goldentooth. We tried to magically
heal Derik. He regained consciousness a few days later. Within a
week, he was able to stand. Within two weeks, he was able to spar
with his warrior companions.
Derik left us, but before he went he offered us a gift. We said,
You have given us enough of a gift already, by destroying
Jaldon. Tears appeared in the great warriors eyes. Clan of my
birth, again you honor me. He dried his eyes and extemporized a

song. He sang it in an unearthly voice, and it was about our clan

and his love for us. It was not long before clans throughout
Dragon Pass were singing this song. Most of them changed it so
that it was about their clans, but they still knew which clan the
song was really about.
Carls and cottars argued over grazing land. Ring members scolded
the carls. The carls said we unfairly abused them, and complained
that the ring was unjust.
Our expedition to Mount Kero Fin returned. There Sartark
encountered explorers of the Orlundi clan, and was moved by the
glory of Kero Fin to exchange promises of friendship and
cooperation with them. They responded in kind.
We sent Aransanda to the Tree Brother tula to try to buy a
treasure from them. She could not strike a deal.
Enjossi, a rebellious thrall belonging to the Brown Boar clan,
came to beg for our aid. He wanted us to protect escaped thralls
from outraged Brown Boar thanes. We offered to buy the rebellious
thralls from the Brown Boars. Aransanda was told that there were 4
rebellious thralls, and that they were worth five cows apiece. We
paid what they asked. We let them live free, as outlaws. The
people were glad; by rescuing unfortunate, mistreated thralls we
honored our ancestors and strengthened our clan magic. During our
absence, Enjossi slipped away and rejoined his group. He and the
other thralls soon melted into the landscape. We later heard that
they were so excited by this first success that they attacked a
troll caravan and were eaten, every one.
The harvest was poor. All of the clans in our tribe suffered bad
harvests, too.
Acting as our emissary, Enerin sought information from the Blue
Jays. Enerin asked, Aside from other clans, who should we fear
most? Arkilla, chief of the Blue Jays, told Enerin that we should
expect trouble from the Marsh Ducks.
Odayla cultists offered to perform a ritual to make the hunting
better in our area. We let them share in our clan magic. They
thanked us and departed, telling us that we would know when the
ritual had been completed when the forest filled with elk.
We spotted a cattle raid by the Orlundi. We drove the Orlundi off,
and their survivors left without plundering our tula.
We sent Aransanda to the Brown Boar tula to try to buy a treasure
from them. She bought the Hate Torch.
1359
The alynx spirits chased off the vermin spirits; there would be
few rats this year.

Argrand was caught with trade goods that he did not buy through
the clan ring. We confiscated the goods and let him off with a
warning.
The elves made peace with us, and gave us gifts,
including items made of cleverly woven twigs and finely-carved
wood.
Jarstakos began the heroquest of Issaries the Conciliator. He was
unable to enter the realm of the gods.
Once more, Mosdorl, Estavos, and Jotisan caused trouble at the
Hiord market. The ring confiscated goods from them. Soon
afterwards, they got drunk and set fire to a cottars hut while
threatening the family that lived there. The clan ring scolded
them. They said that they were only having a little fun, and that
the traders were exaggerating the trouble they had caused.
Weeping thanes of the Orlundi clan brought their dead chieftain
before us, hoping that our Chalana Arroy priestesses would revive
him. We said we would perform the resurrection, and would ask
nothing in return. The Orlundi were extremely grateful, and called
our offer most generous. Our priestesses performed the ceremony,
and brought the Orlundi chieftain back to life. The Orlundi
rejoiced, and said that we would be forever remembered in their
sagas.
A moot was convened to choose a new king. Both Garrath and Rana
were supported by many worthy sponsors. We nominated Aransanda to
take the throne. Garrath was chosen to rule the Sambari tribe.
Garrath, of the Peluski, got ready for the rites of kingship. We
celebrated with influential thanes of other clans. The thanes were
impressed by our generosity. Garrath completed the rites of
kingship. The celebration lasted for days.
Someone put a mud-covered effigy in the middle of the temple of
Ernalda. We dedicated the statue to Eurmal, moving it to its own
sacred hut. Jarstakos said Eurmal was pleased with his new shrine,
and would continue to overcome the skepticism of others for us, at
least for a while.

Jarstakos began the heroquest of Issaries the Conciliator.

Jarstakos and his companions were unable to enter the realm of the
gods.
1360
The god-talkers sensed the presence of disease spirits.
Jarstakos said that if
Lhankor Mhy would help him, he would help Lhankor Mhy search for
the Truth, which was missing. Lhankor Mhy agreed to this, after
scolding Jarstakos for losing the Truth in the first place. Then
Jarstakos saw a fearsome warrior who had to be Storm Bull. He
said, This way! There is chaos to fight! Where? said Urox,
following along. Jarstakos searched for a very long time to find
the worst part of the problem. The problem is that people are

suffering because the Long-Noses and Big-Teeth were at war.
He told Storm Bull to

with the tiger Paratur. Paratur purred, Now, I never did promise
not to eat you, did I? Jarstakos offered to trade treasures with

him. Paratur agreed as long we did not offer him a Digging Stick
People treasure. Paratur gave Jarstakos a necklace of stones that
looked like tiger eyes and let him pass. The people celebrated
Jarstakoss successful enactment of the Issaries the Conciliator
myth. There were Marsh Ducks there to welcome Jarstakos, and to
voice their esteem for us.
We were raided by the Horse-Spawn. We exchanged missile fire with
them, but never closed.
We reorganized as a War clan.
Umathkar of the Isoltings asked us to help slay a walktapus that
was stalking their tula. We did it in exchange for a treasure. We
sent Penterest, along with 16 warriors. They found the walktapus
hiding under some fallen trees. It made a weird screeching sound,
then burst through the logs rotten wood, hurling itself at the
hunting party. Our warriors fell upon it, hacking furiously. We
cut it to bits. Then Isolting sages carefully burned each of the
pieces, saying that the creatures were thought to be able to
regrow themselves. The sages made sure that no one breathed in the
oily smoke from the burning creatures meat. They gave us a
Garland of Reeds, to ensure friendship with the elves.
We reorganized as a Peace clan.
Orlev of the Undaroli clan offered us gifts. We gave Orlev a
reciprocal gift. He said we were very generous, and that he would
say so to others.
Foreign warriors sought refuge among us. Baranthos presided at a
Guest Ceremony, making them guests. They praised our generosity.
1361
The alynx spirits chased off the vermin spirits; there would be
few rats this year.
Our explorers met foreign warriors who rode on monsters shaped
like horses. We sought them out, and invited them to our tula. Sir
Ethilrists men seemed surprised and amused by our offer of
hospitality, and promised to take us up on it, one day.
Penterest began the Humakt the Champion heroquest. Penterest saw
Eurmal stab Grandfather Mortal with the new thing called Death. He
took the sword called Death from Eurmal through flattery.
Penterests family protested his plan to sever his ties to them.
Penterest said, I must cut myself off from kindliness and love,
for I have terrible deeds to perform. Penterest severed his ties
to his kin, becoming a stranger. Orlanth came to Humakt and
demanded the Death weapon. Penterest told Orlanth, You will never
rule Death. Orlanth would not give up the sword, and so the two
of them fought. Orlanth was not slain, but many of his thanes
were. Orlanth came back and treated Penterest like a cottar.
Penterest said that death was more important than safety and

shelter. Penterest refused to accept the cottars role, and so the

two of them fought. Orlanth was not slain, but many of his carls
were. Orlanth came back again, treating Penterest like a carl.
Penterest said that his severing of clan ties couldnt be
reversed. They fought for four days and four nights. Orlanth was
not slain, but many of his cottars and thralls were. Finally,
Orlanth and Penterest became tired beyond mortal reckoning, and
could not go on. Those slain in the battle between Penterest and
Orlanth became undead creatures and attacked. Penterest told
Orlanth that only he could be trusted to fight undead, but the
undead regrouped. It took a day and a night for Penterest to
destroy them all. Orlanth created a special position for him and
told him they were partners. Then Orlanth humbly asked for the
sword of Death. Penterest gave Orlanth the sword. Penterest
returned to the land of mortals from his successful quest.
Penterest brought back a treasure, Humakts Helm.
Angorri and his family came from distant Esrolia, to ask for
membership in our clan. We accepted them, and on that day they
became Espentil.
One of our carls, Robarth, was attacked by two Isolting brothers.
He slew one of them, who was named Burthalor. Robarths mother,
Domasa, reminded us that this was part of a long-running feud
between her family and the family of Isoltings who once stole her
mothers prize stallion. Our clan leaders sought the aid of their
Isolting counterparts in ending the feud. They said that they
would attempt to restrain Burthalors relatives, but could make no
promises that they would succeed.
Emissaries of the Blue Jay clan sought our support in the Orlanth
and Aroka heroquest. We sent many worshippers to the ritual. Our
worshippers enjoyed their lengthy pilgrimage to Orlanths holy
place. The Blue Jays Wind Lord returned from the Godplane, and
announced that he had become one with Orlanth, and had torn Heler
from Arokas belly. Scarcely had these words passed his lips when
the skies darkened and rain pelted down onto the hard, dry earth.
Once more, Mosdorl, Estavos, and Jotisan caused trouble at the
Hiord market. The ring threatened them with outlawry. They
promised to mend their ways.
Brandig began the heroquest of Issaries the Conciliator. He was
unable to enter the realm of the gods.
We sent Aransanda with gifts to the Rune Ducks. They were pleased
with our generosity.
Our shepherds took part in the fighting kite festival. We threw an
elaborate feast when the festival reached our own tula. The
shepherds of the Oak Trees won the contest.
Aransanda began the Ernalda Feeds the Tribe heroquest. But she was
unable to enter the place of the gods.

1362
The god-talkers forecasted that the pigs would give birth to small
and sickly litters.
Lismelder began the Uraldas Blessing heroquest. Lismelder was
unable to enter the realm of the gods.
Barngradus, a thane of the Narri clan, asked us for the details of
the Humakt the Champion story in exchange for owing us a favor.
We told him what he wanted to know. He thanked us and departed.
We stole 19 cows and 18 sheep from the Vostangi.
Lismelder began the Uraldas Blessing heroquest. Lismelder was
unable to enter the realm of the gods.
A trickster came to laugh at us, and to offer us a blessing that
would help us on our next heroquest. We took him up on his offer.
He thanked us for the goods we gave him, and said we would think
of him on our next heroquest.
Lismelder began the Uraldas Blessing heroquest. Lismelder was
unable to enter the realm of the gods.
Oak Tree warriors severely beat one of our carls, and hurt his
wife. The clan ring encouraged Enfrew to sponsor poetic revenge.
Enfrew gave fine gifts to a poet, so he would compose a satire
ridiculing his attackers for their stupidity and viciousness.
Soon, the poem was on everyones lips, and even the vengeancetakers kinfolk were laughing at them.
We raided the Vostangi and eluded their patrols. As the battle
began, Tarkala felt bursting with magical power. Tarkala would not
talk about what she had done, but our god-talkers said that she
had slipped onto the god-plane in the middle of the battle, then
come back with magic that blasted the Vostangi from the field. We
drove the Vostangi from the battlefield, and were able to plunder
their tula. We took 6 Vostang auxiliaries captive.
We were able to ransom the prisoners.
Jarstakos, the devotee of Eurmal on our clan ring, gave away a
herd of our cows. We asked the Orlundi to give the cows back. They
said that tricksters could never be trusted, and returned the
cattle to us.
1363
The god-talkers foretold that our cows wouldnt give much milk.
Jonrik, of the Taraling clan, asked us to
we were tribe-mates. They promised to owe
appeared desperate. We gave him more than
praised our generosity, and said that all

give him grain, because

us several favors. They
he wanted. Jonrik
the clans of Dragon Pass

would hear of it. Our carls were displeased with us; they said
that generosity had to be tempered with common sense.
Brangbane began the Lhankor Mhy Finds the Truth heroquest.
Brangbane found himself in a strange and blasted place, where
something was wrong with the wind. There were other Orlanthi
there, dressed in an unfamiliar manner. He thought one of them
must be Issaries. Brangbane said to Issaries, I know you didnt
intend to sell the truth, so I will allow you to come along.
Issaries said, I have my own reasons for going with you. Then
Brangbane saw a fearsome warrior who looked like Storm Bull. He
said, This way! There is chaos to fight! Where? said Urox,
following along. Issaries took Brangbane and Storm Bull along a
short cut. Along the way, Storm Bull had to fight many chaos
beasts. The worst was a gigantic chaos thing, one whose name could
only be pronounced by the dead. Brangbane let Storm Bull fight
alone. Storm Bull defeated the chaos creature, slaying it utterly.
Issaries led the others through a short cut to the place where the
truth might be found. They were challenged by foreigners who asked
Brangbane to participate in a Meeting Contest. Brangbane tried to
win one contest and lose another. The first was a pain contest,
which the foreigner won. Brangbane then won the memorizing
contest. The foreigners gifted Brangbane with magic and allowed
the party to proceed. Issaries took Brangbane to the right place.
But then he got distracted, showing more interest in an argument
between mastodons and sabretooth tigers than in taking Brangbane
to the god that bought the truth. Brangbane said, Without the
truth, there can be no reconciliation. Issaries told him that his
words were wise. Issaries took Brangbane to find Grandbread, the
god who was going to pound the truth into meal and eat it.
Brangbane challenged Grandbread to a game of questions. The game
went on so long that Grandbread became hungry and tried to eat the
truth in its sharp and twisted form, but the truth poked a hole in
his stomach and fell back out of him again. Why did you do that?
Brangbane asked. Grandbread couldnt answer without looking
foolish, and thus lost the contest. Brangbane tried to put the
truth back into its pure form. Brangbane put a leather sheet over
his head and thought. But nothing came to mind. Then Issaries came
in and asked a foolish question. Brangbane scolded him for
interrupting. Brangbane tried to polish its surfaces. But any
polished area quickly tarnished again. Then Issaries came in and
asked a foolish question. Brangbane scolded him for interrupting.
Brangbane tried to untwist its loops. But every loop twisted up
again, worse than before. Then Issaries came in and asked a
foolish question. Brangbane answered his question. Issaries left.
When Brangbane looked at the truth, it wasnt twisted any more!
Storm Bull got bored and wandered away; Issaries bade farewell to
Brangbane. Brangbane returned to the land of people from his
successful quest. Our leaders suddenly knew many more things.
We raided the Vostangi. We drove the Vostangi from the
battlefield, and were able to plunder their tula. We took 12
Vostang auxiliaries captive.

We were able to ransom the prisoners.

Bastakos, one of our senior weaponthanes, collapsed in the clan
market when confronted with the skull of a horse. A shaman had
once told him that he would die the day he was shown the skull of
a horse. Our followers of Chalana Arroy conducted a healing ritual
over Bastakos. He was sick for a long time, but finally recovered.
He rejoiced, considering himself free from the fate he had for so
long feared. The people cheered.
Enent Four Winds of the Vostangi came to plead for peace and to
offer us 27 cows as one-time tribute. We accepted their tribute.
We swore to Humakt and then to Ernalda to refrain from raiding the
Vostangi for at least ten seasons. Of course these oaths were
binding on them as well.
Acting as our emissary, Brandig sought information from the
Peluski. Brandig asked, Have you heard any prophecies that might
affect us? Garrath, chief of the Peluski, consulted with his godtalkers. He said we could expect starvation if we did not mend our
ways.
Jarstakos, the devotee of Eurmal on our clan ring, gave away a
herd of our cows. We asked the Isoltings to give the cows back.
They said that tricksters could never be trusted, and returned the
cattle to us.
The Estarelder sought to make peace with our tribe. Before the
moot, we said: Make peace if they give a treasure to each clan.
The other clans agreed with us. We were chosen to negotiate with
the Estarelder delegates. We reached an agreement, and made
pledges of peace between our tribes. They gave each clan a
treasure, a small tub of lotion called Heorts Balm.
Eonistaran, a trader of the Zethnoring clan, warned us to be wary
of another trader, Oranda of the Six Brothers clan. We sent an
emissary to Orandas clan to warn her of Eonistarans rumormongering. She thanked us for the warning, and gave us gifts.
Brangbane was struck by her honesty and proper manners.
1364
The god-talkers identified no omens, and this troubled them.
Aransanda was acclaimed a god-talker among god-talkers.
Brandig began the heroquest of Issaries the Conciliator. Brandig
found himself in a strange and blasted place, a place he should
have recognized but did not. He found Lhankor Mhy among the
Orlanthi there. Brandig pointed out to Lhankor Mhy that the world
would need travelling, talking, and trade, before being remade.
Lhankor Mhy refused to leave his studies behind to wander the
broken world on a fruitless mission. Brandig said that if Lhankor
Mhy would help him, he would help Lhankor Mhy search for the
Truth, which was missing. Lhankor Mhy refused, saying that he did

not trust Brandig, who lost the Truth in the first place. Brandig
told Lhankor Mhy that he would learn new things on this journey.
Lhankor Mhy was intrigued, and agreed to go along. Then Brandig
saw a fearsome warrior who had to be Storm Bull. He said, This
way! There is chaos to fight! Where? said Urox, following
along. Brandig searched for a very long time to find the worst
part of the problem. The problem is that people are enemies, and
no longer talk with one another, he thought. This realization led
Brandig to dig in a hillside and uncover a passageway. The group
crossed the big water by walking down the steps of the tunnel.
Along the way, Storm Bull had to fight many chaos beasts. The
worst was a gigantic chaos thing, one whose name could only be
pronounced by the dead. Brandig let Storm Bull fight alone. Storm
Bull defeated the chaos creature, slaying it utterly. Brandig
found the Digging Stick People, who were suffering because the
Long-Noses and Big-Teeth were at war. Neither Lhankor Mhy or Storm
Bull were interested in helping Brandig make peace between the
warring peoples. Brandig said to Storm Bull, A big important
battle is coming up, and all peoples must learn to unite, and to
fight only their real foes. Storm Bull agreed to come along, but
Lhankor Mhy did not. Brandig met with Oriska, the Long-Nose
priestess, who said that she had no reason to make peace with the
Big-Teeth. He went immediately to talk to the Big-Teeth. Brandig
met with Paratur, the Big-Teeth war leader, who also said peace
was impossible. Brandig asked the Knowing God for help,
interrupting some pointless thing that Lhankor Mhy was doing.
Lhankor Mhy said that Oriska was nothing but an overgrown cow, and
Paratur just a big alynx. Then Brandig knew to tell Storm Bull to
romance Oriska, and Oriska agreed to attend a peace parley. He
told Storm Bull to kick Paratur, and Paratur agreed as well. Then
Brandig had to decide what to propose to them. He said, The BigTeeth must only attack weak and sick Long-Noses. He said, The
Long-Noses must accept that some of them will be eaten. Oriska
and Paratur made peace. Through this talking, they made trade. And
with trade, traveling began again, and the world started to knit
itself back into place. Brandig had done his work, and prepared to
leave the realm of the gods. After the others left, Brandig was
left alone with the tiger Paratur. Paratur purred, Now, I never
did promise not to eat you, did I? But I brought you peace!
Brandig protested. There is such a thing as too much peace,
Paratur said. Paratur leapt upon Brandig and tried to devour him.
Brandig was badly mauled by the Big-Tooth, but escaped and made it
back to the realm of mortals. The people celebrated Brandigs
successful enactment of the Issaries the Conciliator myth. There
were Marsh Ducks there to welcome Brandig, and to voice their
esteem for us.
Yanioth did nothing but speak out against the ring. We told her
that her words were harmful to the unity of the clan. She told us
that our poor leadership was harmful to the clan, and that her
honesty was the only thing preventing a violent revolt. The ring
did nothing to counter her cutting words.

The warriors warned the clan ring that many of the great and
ancient families of the clan were not getting their due
representation in the clan hall. Our clan leaders picked those
families who made the most trouble for them, and told them to
leave. They were angry and complained a lot, but those who were
staying were glad to be rid of them. They prepared to leave,
assembling their share of food, livestock and goods for the
journey. As they were the laziest of us, their share was not as
great as it might otherwise have been. People said that they would
have a hard time of it, now that they had to shift for themselves.
We split off our own tula, giving them some of our land. They
chose to call themselves the Blue Spruces, and said that they
would be good neighbors to us. Yanioth was among those who left,
and those who stayed behind were glad to see the back of her.
Aransanda began the Ernalda Feeds the Tribe heroquest. But she was
unable to enter the place of the gods.
Demure and lovely was our Yanioth, as she wedded Dunorl of the
Turtles.
A delegation of the clans leading men raised serious complaints
against the job Aransanda was doing as chief. The rings legal
arguments for Aransanda fell on deaf ears. When questioned, their
spokesman admitted that they were supporters of Broyan. Aransanda
attempted to defend herself, but the clan would not listen. The
clan ring reaffirmed their support for Aransanda. Olende said that
Aransanda was not the only foolish person on the clan council,
A moot was convened to choose a new king. Both Korol and Terasarin
were supported by many worthy sponsors. We nominated Tarkala to
take the throne. Brangbane spoke well, and Tarkala was chosen to
rule the Sambari tribe.
Tarkala got ready for the rites of kingship. We celebrated with
influential thanes of other clans. The thanes were impressed by
our generosity. Tarkala completed the rites of kingship. The
celebration lasted for days.
1365
The god-talkers heard metal ringing in the distance, but could not
tell if it was bells or swords.
Sartarks ability at animal husbandry was acknowledged to be of
heroic level.
A band of very strange musicians asked for permission to play at
our clan market. We accepted the offer. Bundalinis All-Skeleton
Band played, and people came from all over. We challenged members
of other clans to tests of skill and strength. We won the most
contests, and the others celebrated our prowess.
We hosted Sir Ethilrist and his Black Horse Troop at our tula. We
asked if they wanted to trade treasures.

Yet again, 0 spent much time speaking out against the ring. We
told her that her words were harmful to the unity of the clan. She
told us that our poor leadership was harmful to the clan, and that
her honesty was the only thing preventing a violent revolt. We
threatened her with outlawry. She laughed and said that such an
action would only prove our cowardice and lack of proper justice.
She continued with a threat of her own: the people of our clan
would rise up to defend her against such an unjust ruling.
Bandits attacked our exploration party in the southeast. Lismelder
attacked, but was wounded and had to return home.
A woman called Saraska Bright-Eyes came to us and said she would
unify the tribes of Dragon Pass. We conducted a divination. The
god-talkers said that the omens surrounding this Saraska BrightEyes were all bad. She did not have the favor of the gods; the
prophecies she speaks of refer to someone who is not yet born. We
told her to come back when she had won the support of other clans.
We sent Brandig to the Blue Jay tula to try to buy a treasure from
them. He was unable to buy the Kero Fin Kite.
Outlaws attacked our exploration party in the northeast. Penterest
and his forces killed and scattered them.
Yaransor began the Chalana Arroy Heals the Scars heroquest. But
she was unable to enter the realm of the gods.
Markalor, a hunter of the Hiord clan asked permission to hunt a
great white stag on our land. We said he could hunt it in
cooperation with our own hunters. Together, they caught the stag.
It was a magnificent beast indeed, and there was glory enough for
both clans.
Yet again, 0 spent much time speaking out against the ring. The
chieftain outlawed her. Although she had some supporters among the
people, surprisingly few of them argued against the chieftains
harsh decision.
A delegation of the clans leading men raised serious complaints
again about the job Valensta was doing as chief. The complainers
eloquently made the point that they spoke on behalf of the entire
clan. Valensta resigned as chief, but the ring refused to outlaw
her.
1366
The god-talkers identified no omens, and this troubled them.
Other clans came to the moot with Saraska Bright-Eyes, who planned
to argue for a unification of the tribes, with her as Queen of
Dragon Pass. At the moot, we said: She should undergo a test to
prove the strength of her magic. The other clans agreed with us;
Saraska would have to prove herself to us. I am prepared to do

so, Saraska said, because the prophecies say it will be so. She
strode confidently outside the tribal hall. It had been a clear
day, but now glorious dark clouds rolled up. All murmured that
this was a good omen indeed, that she had the favor of Orlanth.
Orlanth, I call on you to recognize my right to rule! Ernalda, I
call on you to recognize my bounty and goodness! Lhankor Mhy, I
call on you to recognize my love for the law!
It began to rain, and the people cheered for her. Then a lightning
bolt came from the sky, and hit her head. She shook in the bolts
searing whiteness for a very long moment. Then she fell to the
ground, wreathed in the smell of burnt flesh. Our healers rushed
towards her, but she was already dead. It was decided that the
omens surrounding Saraska were not so good after all. The other
clans thanked us for steering them away from disaster; they had
been supporting a ruler who lacked the favor of Orlanth.
Tarkala began the Storm Tribe heroquest. Tarkala was told by
Ernalda to make a tribe, so that she could challenge the Emperor.
But the Doubting Wheel rolled up and told Tarkala not to make a
tribe. She tried to catch the Doubting Wheel in a net. When she
threw a net over it, the Doubting Wheel shrank down and became a
tiny thing, small enough for Tarkala to put in her purse. Tarkala
found Yinkin, who said he would join the tribe if Tarkala could
defeat the champions of the Plant Tribe. Tarkala fought both of
them. She tore off the many feet of Rustling Veins, which gave it
sustenance. She blunted the many swords of Sharp Green, which gave
it power. The Plant Tribe was defeated, and Yinkin said that his
Cat Clan would join the Storm Tribe, provided it finds a way to
remember its good laws. Tarkala found the Knowing God trapped
inside a great cube. She recited a poem about square things
becoming round. The cube showed no signs of having heard the poem.
She hit the cube. The cube was broken, and so was Tarkalas hand.
The Knowing God, who hardly ever even smiles, could not stop
laughing. I might come to your confederation moot, he said, if
these tears of mirth ever end, and I regain my sight. Tarkala
found Vadrus, who had decided to fight Yinkin and his Cat Clan.
She challenged Vadrus to a contest of strength. Vadrus accepted
the challenge. They arm-wrestled, and Tarkala won. You have
bested me, so I am obliged to do as you wish, Vadrus said, I
will seek a foe other than Yinkin, and may even attend this
confederation moot of yours so long as that accursed cat is not
among the chieftains there. Tarkala found more chieftains to
bring their clans to the confederation moot, but when they got

there, they fell to fighting, and blamed her for making

contradictory promises. She offered to fight each and every one of
them. They were quite ready to do this, and Tarkala was preparing
for the battle when Ernalda brought her implements of tribal
regalia. She brought the Chest of Torcs, with which she could gift
the clan leaders. She brought the Hall of Understanding, where
people would settle their differences by talking them out. She
brought the Crown of Authority, which made people respect her
sacral powers and pledge allegiance to her. Most of the clans
agreed to make the tribe, but there were still some who were
stubborn. Then warriors of the Night Tribe came and attacked the
quarrelling clans. Tarkala led the fight against the Night People.
Everyone banded together to fight these hungry enemies. After they
defeated the night warriors, they acclaimed Tarkala as their king.
Tarkala returned to the land of mortals, her quest successful.
Tarkala had splendid items from the gods realm to add to our
tribal regalia, just like the items Ernalda gave to Orlanth when
he made the Storm Tribe.
Ferena of the Oak Tree clan accused Markalor of the Wildcat of
unfair trade; both asked Queen Tarkala to adjudicate the case. We
conducted a divination. The spirits of our ancestors said that
Markalor had in fact used a Listening Wind against Ferena. Tarkala
ruled in favor of Ferena. Ferena praised us for seeing with an
unclouded eye, and gifted us with half of the horses we had
ordered Markalor to turn over to her. Markalors face lost its
usual smile, but he said nothing about our verdict.
Bandits attacked our exploration party in the north. Kallai
attacked, but our forces were routed.
Priests of the Isolting clan accused tricksters of the Oak Tree of
using trickster magic to direct a plague towards them. Queen
Tarkala was called upon to adjudicate the case. We conducted a
divination. The spirits of our ancestors said that the tricksters
were guilty. Tarkala found in favor of the Isolting priests. The
priests said that the queens verdict was righteous. The
tricksters were dismayed, for the finding meant that they would be
beaten.
A delegation of the clans leading men raised serious complaints
again about the job Beneva was doing as chief. The ring reminded
the complainers of their obligation to follow chosen leaders.
The Peluski took some of our carls as thralls. We took the matter
to a tribal moot. The other clans said that the Peluski were wrong
to take thralls from their own tribe. They were ordered to return
the captured carls, and to pay compensation for stealing their
freedom and for mistreating them.
Valensta began the Ernalda Feeds the Tribe heroquest. But she was
unable to enter the place of the gods.
1367

The clan would see endless legal squabbles in the coming year,
according to the god-talkers.
Humakti warriors said we should give them permission to enter our
tula and fight the undead. We granted it, and gave them gifts.
They praised us as an honorable clan. They found spectres and
ghouls everywhere, and put them to the sword. We knew that our
lands were haunted, but had no idea just how much danger our
people were in. We were overjoyed that they vanquished the undead
on our tula.
Kestald began the Storm Tribe heroquest. Kestald was told by
Ernalda to make a tribe, so that he could challenge the Emperor.
But the Doubting Wheel rolled up and told Kestald not to make a
tribe. He tried to catch the Doubting Wheel in a net. When he
threw a net over it, the Doubting Wheel shrank down and became a
tiny thing, small enough for Kestald to put in his purse. Kestald
found Yinkin, who said he would join the tribe if Kestald could
defeat the champions of the Plant Tribe. Kestald fought both of
them. He tore off the many feet of Rustling Veins, which gave it
sustenance. He blunted the many swords of Sharp Green, which gave
it power. The Plant Tribe was defeated, and Yinkin said that his
Cat Clan would join the Storm Tribe, provided it finds a way to
remember its good laws. Kestald found the Knowing God trapped
inside a great cube. He recited a poem about square things
becoming round. The poem caused the cube to crumble, and the
Knowing God was freed. The Knowing God agreed to make the Marks On
Bark Clan part of the Storm Tribe, so long as this new tribe had
fierce warriors. Kestald found Vadrus, who had decided to fight
Yinkin and his Cat Clan. He challenged Vadrus to a contest of
strength. Vadrus accepted the challenge. They arm-wrestled, and
Kestald won. You have bested me, so I am obliged to do as you
wish, Vadrus said, I will seek a foe other than Yinkin, and may
even attend this confederation moot of yours so long as that
accursed cat is not among the chieftains there. Kestald found
more chieftains to bring their clans to the confederation moot,
but when they got there, they fell to fighting, and blamed him for
making contradictory promises. He offered to fight each and every
one of them. They were quite ready to do this, and Kestald was
preparing for the battle when Ernalda brought him implements of
tribal regalia.
Kestald led the fight against the
Night People. Everyone banded together to fight these hungry
enemies. After they defeated the night warriors, they acclaimed
Kestald as their king. Kestald returned to the land of mortals,
his quest successful. Our friends in the other clans said that
this heroquest would be well-remembered when our next king was
chosen.

We were raided by the Horse-Spawn. We drove the Horse-Spawn off,

and their survivors left without plundering our tula.
Yanioth, daughter of Leikan and Hindala, went missing. Her parents
thought she was at Clan Vanstatch, in the company of a former
suitor, Barngradus. We went to the Vanstatchi and asked Yanioth if
it was her will to marry Barngradus. She said it was, so we
allowed it, although it was contrary to tradition.
A delegation of the clans leading men raised serious complaints
again about the job Beneva was doing as chief. Benevas clever
oration reaffirmed her right to rule.
Brandig led a caravan to trade with the Blue Spruces.
Odayla cultists offered to perform a ritual to make the hunting
better in our area. We accepted their offer, and gave them gifts.
They thanked us for the gifts and departed, telling us that we
would know when the ritual had been completed when the forest
filled with elk.
We were raided by the Tree Brothers. We drove the Tree Brothers
off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. We took
12 Tree Brother auxiliaries captive.
We decided to free the prisoners.
Our weaponthanes said that the raid by the Tree Brothers violated
our peace with their tribe. We demanded compensation from the
Estarelder. They offered us fair compensation, and we accepted it.
Humakti warriors sought our help in a war party against walking
corpses. We let them share in our clan magic. They thanked us for
the aid in the battle to keep the line between life and death as
sharp as a swords edge, and departed.
1368
The god-talkers said any children born this year would have great
destinies.
We sent Brandig with gifts to the Blue Jays. They were pleased
with our generosity. They said that we were their friends, and
that we could call on them in the future if we needed to.
Lhankor Mhy agreed to go, after chiding Brandig for being
imprecise and using ill-chosen words. Then Brandig saw a fearsome
warrior who had to be Storm Bull. He said, This way! There is
chaos to fight! Where? said Urox, following along. Brandig

searched for a very long time to find the worst part of the
problem. The problem is that people are enemies, and no longer
talk with one another, he thought. This realization led Brandig to
dig in a hillside and uncover a passageway. The group crossed the
big water by walking down the steps of the tunnel. Along the way,
Storm Bull had to fight many chaos beasts. The worst was a
gigantic chaos thing, one whose name could only be pronounced by
the dead. Brandig let Storm Bull fight alone. Storm Bull defeated
the chaos creature, slaying it utterly. Brandig found the Digging
Stick People, who were suffering because the Long-Noses and BigTeeth were at war. Neither Lhankor Mhy or Storm Bull were
interested in helping Brandig make peace between the warring
peoples. Brandig said to Storm Bull, A big important battle is
coming up, and all peoples must learn to unite, and to fight only
their real foes. Storm Bull agreed to come along, but Lhankor Mhy
did not. Brandig met with Oriska, the Long-Nose priestess, who
said that she had no reason to make peace with the Big-Teeth. He
went immediately to talk to the Big-Teeth. Brandig met with
Paratur, the Big-Teeth war leader, who also said peace was
impossible. Brandig asked the Knowing God for help, interrupting
some pointless thing that Lhankor Mhy was doing. Lhankor Mhy said
that Oriska was nothing but an overgrown cow, and Paratur just a
big alynx. Then Brandig knew to tell Storm Bull to romance Oriska,
and Oriska agreed to attend a peace parley. He told Storm Bull to
kick Paratur, and Paratur agreed as well. Then Brandig had to
decide what to propose to them. He said, The Big-Teeth must only
attack weak and sick Long-Noses. He said, The Long-Noses must
accept that some of them will be eaten. He said, The Big-Teeth
must trade back the bones of the dead Long-Noses. Oriska and
Paratur made peace.
There
were Elves there to welcome Brandig, and to voice their esteem for
us.
Insterid, a member of the Peluski ring, came seeking help against
a gigantic wyrm. We tried to convince the wyrm to move along.
Aransanda sought out the wyrm and told it that it was unfairly
harming the people of clan Peluski. It agreed to go elsewhere, and
thanked us for our courtesy. You not as bad as humans dragons had
to eat, it said.
Bandits attacked our exploration party in the west. Kallai and his
forces killed and scattered them.

A bandit shaman named Hofstaring captured the carl Baranthos and

demanded an outrageous ransom for his return. We paid what he
asked. The shaman danced around Kestald with his rattle and made
unpleasant chortling noises. Then he returned Baranthos to us, and
we left his presence.
The Peluski chief accused the Jenestni chief of luring
weaponthanes away from his clan, and demanded compensation. Queen
Tarkala was called upon to adjudicate the case. We conducted a
divination. The spirits of our ancestors said that Garneneva had
wrongly induced the weaponthanes to leave the Peluski clan.
Tarkala found in favor of Terasarin. Terasarin praised the clear
sight and honesty of our queen, and thanked us by gifting us with
half of the penalty levied against Garneneva.
We were raided by an enormous force of Tusk Riders. Some people
blamed Thadart, the warrior with the Tusk Rider face, for
betraying us to them. Thadart denied this accusation, and offered
to ride out to negotiate with the Tusk Riders. We let him do this.
Our patrollers watched nervously as Thadart rode out. For a
moment, it looked as if the tuskers would ride right over him, but
then they stopped, and parleyed. We anxiously looked on as Thadart
gestured and snorted at the Tusk Rider leaders, and they gestured
and snorted in return. Finally they turned away, and the assault
was averted. Thadart returned to us, and everyone asked him how he
had convinced them to leave. I tricked them, he said.
Outlaws blocked our emissary to the Boskovi clan. Brandig stood
firm, keeping the outlaws from taking anything.
We sent Brandig with gifts to the Boskovi. They were pleased with
our generosity. They said that we were their friends, and that we
could call on them in the future if we needed to.
Rostalos approached us, seeking our support for his heroquest. We
did as he asked, and lent our ritual support to his quest.
Yaransor began the Chalana Arroy Heals the Scars heroquest. But
she was unable to enter the realm of the gods.
Outlaws attacked our exploration party in the south. Kallai
attacked, but was wounded and had to return home.
Strange explorers came to our tula. We gave them hospitality. But
they failed to behave properly. We put up with their bad behavior
until they went away.
Valensta began the Ernalda Feeds the Tribe heroquest. But she was
unable to enter the place of the gods.
1369
The god-talkers heard metal ringing in the distance, but could not
tell if it was bells or swords.

She cured the foreigner of his foreignness, and so he protected
Yaransor. He said his name was Elmal. Yaransor healed many storm
people, but was then confronted with Orlanth, who wanted to kill
her. Yaransor healed his wounded judgment; he made her one of his
The rift within our
clan was healed.
We caught Grivton of the Anmangarn clan sneaking into one of our
steads. We told the Anmangarni that they would have to pay to get
him back. We convinced them to pay more than the customary ransom.
Brandig began the heroquest of Issaries the Conciliator. He was
unable to enter the realm of the gods.
Bandits attacked our exploration party in the north. Kallai and
his forces killed and scattered them.
We found a very old cart with dragon insignia on it. We put it on
display. Clans who once cooperated with dragons admired our new
treasure. Those who had fought against dragons in the past were
displeased with us.
Outlaws attacked our exploration party in the south. Kallai and
his forces killed and scattered them.
Explorers encountered a bark-clad shaman who predicted that
hunters would trespass against us, and then warned against a
mysterious crop of spears. We decided to find the shaman and offer
to adopt him. They looked high and low for the shaman, but did not
find him.
We sent Brandig to the Boskovi tula to try to buy a treasure from
them. He bought the Iron Plow.

Uralda cultists sought aid in a great ceremony to prevent cattle

sickness in a distant corner of Dragon Pass. We sent Desrada to
the ceremony with heartfelt prayers and hopes for the rituals
success.
Robasart, a thane of the Wildcat clan, asked us for information
about Temertain, chief of the Old Owl clan. He reminded us that we
owed his people a favor. We endeavored to answer his questions.
Robasart asked us if Temertain was cautious or daring. We
answered, Temertain is very daring. Robasart departed, and
thanked us for the information. Not long afterwards, he returned
to our tula to thank us again. Your words gave us insight into
Temertain, and we used that insight to forge an alliance with the
Old Owls. He gave us gifts, and the people were happy.
1370
According to the omens, the forces of Chaos were weaker this year.
Our warriors were stricken by a strange palsy. We conducted a
divination. The god-talkers said that the malady was caused by the
Hendarti, who had hired shamans to send bad spirits after us. We
sacrificed to Chalana Arroy. The god-talkers said that the Healing
Goddess had banished the bad spirits.
We were raided by the Tree Brothers. We drove the Tree Brothers
off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula. We took
9 Tree Brother auxiliaries captive.
We were able to ransom the prisoners.
Our explorers went to the Orlanthi land of Tarsh. There they met
an odd fellow who called himself the Prince of Masks, and said he
would visit a magical catastrophe upon any clan in Dragon Pass we
chose, in exchange for a gift of silver. We agreed to his
proposal. The Prince of Masks said he would work his magics, but
we didnt hear about any catastrophes striking the Tree Brothers.
Our weaponthanes said that the raid by the Tree Brothers violated
our peace with their tribe. We demanded compensation from the
Estarelder. They offered us fair compensation, and we accepted it.
We persuaded the Blue Jays to let our raiders cross their tula.
We raided the Anmangarni. Tarkala had a chance to turn the battle
in our favor. By the time Tarkala could gather strong warriors to
her side, the Anmangarni had regrouped. We drove the Anmangarni
from the battlefield, and were able to plunder their tula.
They found jewelled hair combs in a cave. Trolls came to fight
them, but our explorers whooped and stomped, scaring them away.
Priestesses of Chalana Arroy said they would heal our sick and
wounded in exchange for a future favor. We asked them to heal all
of our sick and wounded. They did so, and the people rejoiced. The

priestesses departed, reminding us that they would one day return

to ask for a favor in return.
He tried to dull its thorns. But they quickly became sharp again.
Then Issaries came in and asked a foolish question. Brangbane
answered his question. Issaries left. When Brangbane looked at the
truth, it wasnt twisted any more! Storm Bull got bored and
wandered away; Issaries bade farewell to Brangbane. Brangbane
returned to the land of people from his successful quest. Our godtalkers suddenly knew more stories of the gods.
Jenesta sought divorce from Iskalli. She said he had taken a
mistress, and that she deserved to keep the bride price as a fine
for adultery. We conducted a divination. The spirits of our
ancestors said that the stink of adultery was on Iskalli like fur

on an alynx. We outlawed Iskalli and paid the bride price. My kin

will say that you are just, said Jenesta, as she left our tula to
rejoin her kin among the Narri.
Dragonewts eluded our patrols, and did strange things on our land.
We tried to communicate with them. The dragonewts glanced at us
briefly, then went back to their ritual. Two hours later, they
left our lands.
1371
The omens suggested that the crops might not get enough sunshine
this year.
A bold young warrior named Tarkalor sought a duel with a champion
of our clan. Kestald accepted his challenge. The two fought a
ferocious battle that seemed to go on for hours. Finally, our
champion fell to his knees and spoke the traditional words of
surrender.
We raided the Vostangi. Tarkala had the chance to fight like a
hero. She fought as if she was Vinga herself, slaying the enemy on
every side. We drove the Vostangi from the battlefield, and were
able to plunder their tula.
The Taralings challenged us and others to a cooking contest. We
used our magics to help us prepare food for the contest. The
tasters enjoyed our food, but we did not win the contest.
We found Isolting hunters poaching deep within our territory. We
offered their clan the chance to buy hunting rights on our land.
They agreed to our terms.
Jerernalda Earthkin of the Vostangi came to plead for peace and to
offer us 23 cows as one-time tribute. We accepted their tribute.
We swore to Humakt and then to Ernalda to refrain from raiding the
Vostangi for at least ten seasons. Of course these oaths were
binding on them as well.
The Peluski came to us and said that it was time our tribe made
war on the Beastfolk. We went to the moot to argue for war against
the Beastfolk. The other clans rejected our call for battle.
Our explorers met with Orlanthi of Tarsh. Like us, these people
came to Dragon Pass after an invader conquered their homeland. In
their case, the homeland was to the north of Dragon Pass, and
their conquerors were the chaotic Red Empire. The customs of these
Tarshites were different from ours, but they still knew the most
important Orlanthi laws. An expedition went to Tarsh and learned
of military affairs in that land. King Ovartien Twinson had won
the love of his people by mounting frequent raids against the part
of the Lunar Empire called Sylila, thus enriching the Tarshite
thanes. He allied himself with our hated foes, the Horse-Spawn,
who the Tarshites called Grazers. The Horse-Spawn helped the
Tarshites on their raids against the Lunars. While in Tarsh,

Kestald and the others engaged in many gambling contests. They won
much more than they lost.
All of the other clans in our tribe suffered bad harvests.
Our exploration party was taken prisoner by trolls and presented
to their leader, Cragspider. Our explorers respectfully paid
homage to Cragspider. I have heard of your clan. You are no
better than the rest of the pink vermin. I liked Dragon Pass
better without you. Then she slew the entire party, with a sudden
blast of fire.
Enderos was attacked by skeletal, winged monsters in the forest.
Brangbane took weaponthanes out to do battle with them. We
sacrificed to Humakt to strengthen Brangbanes hand. The godtalkers said the omens were good; Humakt heard our pleas.
Brangbane and the four weaponthanes returned triumphant. They told
us how they slew the monsters.
Brandig began the heroquest of Issaries the Conciliator. He was
unable to enter the realm of the gods.
Jostharl began the Humakt the Champion heroquest. But he was
unable to enter the place of the gods.
1372
The god-talkers feared for our explorers.
Bandits blocked our emissary to the Old Owl clan. Brandig
attacked, but was wounded and had to return home.
The Issaries priestess Sora Goodseller came to our clan and asked
if we had any white horses to trade. We had no white horses.
Embarrassed that we had no white horse, we gave her a feast
instead.
We raided the Squat Oaks. We drove the Squat Oaks from the
battlefield, and were able to plunder their tula.
Priests and thanes from the Turtle clan come to request the right
to adopt a baby, one they said would grow up to become a great
hero of the Knowing God. We granted their request. They were
grateful, and said that all of Dragon Pass would one day be
grateful to us, too.
Branbrig, a thane of the Orlundi clan, asked us for the details of
the How Things Began story. We told him what he wanted to know.
He thanked us and departed.
A trickster came to laugh at us, and to offer us a blessing that
would help us on our next heroquest. We rudely declined his offer.
He made noises like a bird, removed his boot and smelled it, and
then departed.

Tarkalor of the Blue Spruce clan offered us gifts. We gave

Tarkalor a reciprocal gift. He said we were very generous, and
that he would say so to others.
1373
The omens foretold good fortune this year.
Brangbane tried to polish its
surfaces. But any polished area quickly tarnished again. Then
Issaries came in and asked a foolish question. Brangbane scolded
him for interrupting. Brangbane put a leather sheet over his head
and thought. But nothing came to mind.

Ragged outlaws demand hospitality, and threatened us with a rain

of hail sent by Gagarth, the outlaw god. We refused them entry.
They left, shaking their fists and repeating their threats. Even
their children threatened to kill us.
Jostharl began the Humakt the Champion heroquest. But he was
unable to enter the place of the gods.
We were raided by the Tree Brothers. We twirled the Bull-roarer,
and the enemy mounts became uncontrollable. We were driven from
the battlefield and looted.
Our weaponthanes said that the raid by the Tree Brothers violated
our peace with their tribe. We demanded compensation from the
Estarelder. They offered us fair compensation, and we accepted it.
Harran accused his wife, Instarya, and Ordag, his young nephew, of
adultery. We conducted a divination. The spirits of our ancestors
said that Instarya and Ordag were blameless, and that we would
suffer if they were outlawed. The ring asked their kinfolk if they
could have done it. No one could believe what Harran accused them
of. He has been drinking too much, driven by baseless and
unthinking jealousy. They were exonerated. They thanked us for
being wise enough to see the truth.
1374
The god-talkers said we would be blessed with many children this
year.
Intagarn said he had been given poor hospitality among the
Turtles, and that they were deliberately slighting us. We sent a
delegation to protest the Turtless poor hospitality. They
apologized for insulting Intagarn, and gave us gifts to show their
sincerity.
Jostharl began the Humakt the Champion heroquest. But he was
unable to enter the place of the gods.
Garnath, a warrior of the Arnorings, wished to marry Hindala,
daughter of the chief. Tonalang, the Arnoring Lawspeaker, came to
help plead his case. We left the matter to Hindala, and the
eternal attraction between man and woman took its course.
The Uroxi warrior Orlev the Rowdy tried to kill Korols cattle,
claiming they were broo-infested. Desrada ritually determined that
Orlev was mistaken. Gruffly apologizing for his error, he
departed.
The warrior Sartark, outlawed from his clan, came to us for
refuge. We made him one of our weaponthanes.
1375
The god-talkers predicted good calving.

Spirit-talkers showed up and asked if we needed anything from

them. We asked them to sell us Spirit Fetches. We added the Spirit
Fetches to our treasures.
Dorasor came to ask us for a gift of luck and divine favor, saying
that his clan, the Taralings, would owe us a favor. He said that
as queen, we should be willing to help the clans in our tribe so
that they did not grow weak. We gave more than the customary
amount. Dorasor said that Tarkala made a good tribal queen, and
pledged his peoples political support for our clan.
The warriors warned the clan ring that many of the great and
ancient families of the clan were not getting their due
representation in the clan hall. We sought volunteers to split
off. Most were reluctant to step forward, but everyone knew that a
split in the clan was necessary for survival. Eventually a quarter
of our families stepped forward. We would not split off our tula,
so they had to find a new place to live. They said that we were
wanting in generosity. They left to look for empty land, where
they could make a new home. We heard later that they were calling
themselves the Anzarni clan.
Our explorers went north to Tarsh and found out that Ovartien
Twinson was still king of that land, still raiding the Lunars, and
still enriching our Horse-Spawn foes. Jostharls companions found
many temptations in Tarsh, and spent their time drinking and
roistering. They damaged items of value to the Tarshites, and
learned that manners were different there. Jostharl was forced to
compensate the Tarshites. He could not altogether restore our
clans good name among them.
Thanes from an Elmal clan came to complain that our thanes
disrupted their holy ceremonies and lobbed dirt clods at their
temple. We composed a poem of apology to them. Our poem only
offended them further. Slippery words cannot conceal your
contempt for our god! they cried. They said that they would make
sacrifices to Elmal, and that we would suffer ill-fortune as a
result.
A delegation of the clans leading men raised serious complaints
again about the job Beneva was doing as chief. The ring reminded
the complainers of their obligation to follow chosen leaders.
An expedition was sent to the north, but no one returned. The
warriors openly criticized the ring for sending explorers to such
a dangerous place.
We sent Brandig with gifts to the Anzarni. They were pleased with
our generosity. They said that we were their friends, and that we
could call on them in the future if we needed to.
The harvest was plentiful.

Jostharl began the Humakt the Champion heroquest. Jostharl saw

Eurmal stab Grandfather Mortal with the new thing called Death.
Eurmal didnt fall for Jostharls flattery. Eurmal would not reply
to Jostharls taunts. He tricked Eurmal into giving him the sword
called Death through politeness. Jostharls family protested his
plan to sever his ties to them. Jostharl said, I must cut myself
off from kindliness and love, for I have terrible deeds to
perform. Jostharl severed his ties to his kin, becoming a
stranger. Orlanth came to Humakt and demanded the Death weapon.
Jostharl told Orlanth, You will never rule Death. Orlanth would
not give up the sword, and so the two of them fought. Orlanth was
not slain, but many of his thanes were. Orlanth came back and
treated Jostharl like a cottar. Jostharl said that death was more
important than safety and shelter. Jostharl refused to accept the
cottars role, and so the two of them fought. Orlanth was not
slain, but many of his carls were. Orlanth came back again,
treating Jostharl like a carl. Jostharl said that his severing of
clan ties couldnt be reversed. They fought for four days and four
nights. Orlanth was not slain, but many of his cottars and thralls
were. Finally, Orlanth and Jostharl became tired beyond mortal
reckoning, and could not go on. Those slain in the battle between
Jostharl and Orlanth became undead creatures and attacked.
Jostharl told Orlanth that only he could be trusted to fight
undead, but the undead regrouped. It took a day and a night for
Jostharl to destroy them all. Orlanth created a special position
for him and told him they were partners. Then Orlanth humbly asked
for the sword of Death. Jostharl gave Orlanth the sword. Jostharl
returned to the land of mortals from his successful quest.
Jostharl brought back a treasure, Humakts Sword.
Markalor, one of our carls, was tarred and feathered by Leika, a
thane of the Vostang clan, because she said we were too friendly
with ducks. The clan ring encouraged Markalor to pursue private
vengeance against Leika. Markalor agreed, and set out to find
allies to attack his tormentor.
1376
Eurmal laughed during Sacred Time, and said that misfortune would
plague us until we replaced at least half of our clan ring.
Brandig convinced the Anzarni to create a new trading route.
Priests of the Isolting clan accused tricksters of the Turtle of
using trickster magic to direct a plague towards them. Queen
Tarkala was called upon to adjudicate the case. We conducted a
divination. The spirits of our ancestors said that the Turtle
tricksters were blameless. Tarkala ruled in favor of the Turtle
tricksters. The tricksters thanked us for our mercy, and gifted us
with a broken flagon, which they said would bring us good luck.
We gave gifts to the Blue Spruces so that we could cross their
tula.

We raided the Tree Brothers and eluded their patrols. We showed

the head of Markanth Margrainsson, and the Tree Brothers pulled
back in confusion. We drove the Tree Brothers from the
battlefield, and were able to plunder their tula. Sartark
distinguished himself in the fighting.
Strange foreigners were found defiling one of Ernaldas holy
sheds. Our women conducted a ritual of purification. We conducted
a ritual to try to divine Ernaldas desires. The divination
indicated mercy, so we simply drove them off.
Randalyar, a thane of the Estarelder tribe and a confidant of its
queen, protested our raid on the Tree Brothers. We broke off the
alliance. It is as I suspected, Randalyar said. You will hear
from us soon, dishonorable ones.
Humakti warriors sought our help in a war party against walking
corpses. We sent warriors to fight alongside them. They said we
were honorable, and then departed with our warriors in tow.
Our explorers went north to Tarsh and found out that Ovartien
Twinson was still king of that land, still raiding the Lunars, and
still enriching our Horse-Spawn foes. Unfamiliar with subtle
Tarshite customs, Brandig gave inadvertent offense to some of
their thanes, who turned out to be half-crazed by recent warfare.
Our explorers were ambushed by these Tarshites and their swordmates, and a pitched battle was joined. Half of our explorers were
wounded, and one was slain.
Our expedition to Mount Kero Fin returned. Valensta had a wondrous
tale to tell. She and the others were exploring the snowy reaches
of Orlanths mother, when they found themselves swept away to
participate in an ancient battle, fighting against the forces of
Lokamayadon, the traitorous priest who sought to eclipse Orlanth.
Valensta and the others fought against berserkers who opened
doorways to the underworld with every blow they struck. Despite
the confusing circumstances and difficult odds, our explorers
fought well. Another great gust blew them back to Kero Fin, where
wind spirits rewarded us. They pledged to come to our aid and
fight on our behalf against any other clan of Dragon Pass. They
would fight one battle only, but would come whenever we called.
One of our carls was found dead, a victim of secret murder. We
conducted a divination. The spirits of our ancestors groaned, and
said that Yanioth was murdered by bandits crazed by bad wine. We
blamed outlaws for the crime. We sent a war party to punish the
outlaws. We did not find any outlaws to punish.
Horse-spawn women came to tell our priestesses that they had a new
leader, a woman with earth powers who was called the Feathered
Horse Queen. We gave them a treasure. They said that the Feathered
Horse Queen would be most pleased by our generous gift. After they
were gone, the warriors said we should not have given such a
valuable thing to an enemy.

Illator of Tarsh came and told us to hand over the Lunars wed
been hiding. We told him we hadnt seen any Lunars. Before he
left, Illator composed a short poem referring to our dishonesty.
A delegation of the clans leading men raised serious complaints
again about the job Marlesta was doing as chief. The rings legal
arguments for Marlesta fell on deaf ears. Marlesta attempted to
defend herself, but the clan would not listen. The complainers
eloquently made the point that they spoke on behalf of the entire
clan. The clan ring reaffirmed their support for Marlesta.
Rastoron said that Marlesta was not the only foolish person on the
clan council,
1377
Our seers had a vision of a fence falling down and our tula
covered with strangers.
We were able to attract 20 new carls to the clan. They brought
with them 20 children.
The spirits of our ancestors appeared and offered us a blessing to
help us fulfill our destiny. Make our queen wiser still, we
asked. A wise request begets wisdom, said our ancestors, who
surrounded Tarkala, our queen, then disappeared. Our queen
appeared to swoon, but when she awoke, she declared that herself
stronger and more clear-headed than ever.
Our explorers went north to Tarsh and found out that Ovartien
Twinson was still king of that land, still raiding the Lunars, and
still enriching our Horse-Spawn foes. Brandigs companions found
many temptations in Tarsh, and spent their time drinking and
roistering. They damaged items of value to the Tarshites, and
learned that manners were different there. Brandig was forced to
compensate the Tarshites. He could not altogether restore our
clans good name among them.
We raided the Tree Brothers. We were driven off and had no
opportunity to obtain booty.
Jerernalda of the Turtle clan accused Vastyr of the Orlundi of
unfair trade; both asked Queen Tarkala to adjudicate the case. We
conducted a divination. The spirits of our ancestors said that
Vastyr had not used his Listening Wind against Jerernalda. Tarkala
ruled in favor of Vastyr. Vastyr thanked us for our wisdom.
Jerernalda said nothing, but was clearly angry.

Rostandos and his family came from distant Esrolia, to ask for
membership in our clan. We accepted them, and on that day they
became Espentil.
The day of the battle against the Estarelder came upon us. We
conducted a divination. The god-talkers said we were likely to win
the battle. We fought boldly.
The battle was joined. Priests from both sides rained thunder down
on the battlefield. We charged our foemen boldly, our battleshouts
ringing in their ears. Their line broke, and we fell among them,
driving the enemy into the mud. We suffered only light losses.
Ernaldness surrendered, and paid reparations to us. Our clan
claimed a royal share of the loot.
An expedition to the chaotic place known as Snakepipe Hollow
recovered some goods of value.
We were raided by the Anmangarni. We twirled the Bull-roarer, and
the enemy mounts became uncontrollable. We drove the Anmangarni
off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula.
The poem caused the cube to crumble, and the
Knowing God was freed. The Knowing God agreed to make the Marks On
Bark Clan part of the Storm Tribe, so long as this new tribe had
fierce warriors. Tarkala found Vadrus, who had decided to fight
Yinkin and his Cat Clan. She challenged Vadrus to a contest of
strength. Vadrus accepted the challenge. They arm-wrestled, and
Tarkala won. You have bested me, so I am obliged to do as you
wish, Vadrus said, I will seek a foe other than Yinkin, and may
even attend this confederation moot of yours so long as that
accursed cat is not among the chieftains there. Tarkala found
more chieftains to bring their clans to the confederation moot,
but when they got there, they fell to fighting, and blamed her for
making contradictory promises. She offered to fight each and every
one of them. They were quite ready to do this, and Tarkala was
preparing for the battle when Ernalda brought her implements of
tribal regalia. She brought the Chest of Torcs, with which she
could gift the clan leaders. She brought the Hall of
Understanding, where people would settle their differences by

talking them out. She brought the Crown of Authority, which made
people respect her sacral powers and pledge allegiance to her.
Most of the clans agreed to make the tribe, but there were still
some who were stubborn. Then warriors of the Night Tribe came and
attacked the quarrelling clans. Tarkala led the fight against the
Night People. Everyone banded together to fight these hungry
enemies. After they defeated the night warriors, they acclaimed
Tarkala as their king. Tarkala returned to the land of mortals,
her quest successful. The other clans in the tribe were cheered by
Tarkalas great success, and the mood of our tribe greatly
improved.
Our herds dwindled, and the people grew restive. The ring members
told them that we would sacrifice to Uralda. The people accepted
this pledge.
Lismelder began the Uraldas Blessing heroquest. Lismelder was
unable to enter the realm of the gods.
1378
The god-talkers heard whispers in a strange language, but could
not make out the meaning.
Turtle warriors raided us, driving off a small herd of cattle
before we could even react. We sent a delegation to urge them to
cease their raiding. They said that they wanted to get along with
us, and would not raid us again. They returned the cows they had
stolen.
Lismelder began the Uraldas Blessing heroquest. Lismelder went
back to an ancient time, a time before Umath, before Yelm, and
long before Orlanth, a time where everything was good for her
four-legged people. But things were bad for the two-legged people,
who were hungry, and asked Lismelders bulls for help. She found a
high place in order to watch the two-legs as they left. The bulls
chased the two-legs away, and the two-legs yelled and shrieked
most piteously. The biting things came, and Lismelder could not
protect her children from them. So she embarked on a journey to
the home of the two-legs. First, she was attacked by large biting
things. Lismelder withstood the first attack of the biting things,
but was wounded. Second, she was attacked by biting things with
sharp teeth that cut flesh. Lismelder withstood the second attack
of the biting things, but suffered further injuries. Third, she
was attacked by biting things that swoop down from the air.
Lismelder withstood the third attack of the biting things, but
again her flesh was torn. Although it took every last bit of her
strength, Lismelder made it to the tula of the two-legged people.
Lismelder was glad she had watched for their trail when they were
chased away by the bulls. Lismelder attempted to enter the two-leg
camp, but the two-legged bulls tried to capture her and pen her
up. She made the secret sign to Ernalda. Ernalda noticed the sign,
and from the greeting Ernalda gave her, Uralda recognized Ernalda
as her mother. Life is almost good, Ernalda said. But my
children have found this new thing called hunger, and I do not

know what to do Lismelder said she had a plan. Lismelder headed

back to her people, this time with some of Ernaldas two-legged
bulls to protect her. She told her bulls to tell the herd to get
ready for a journey to the land of the two-legs. The bulls did not
want to understand why. They also did not want to be without cows,
so they followed her, all the way to the two-leg encampment, where
they lived for some time. The bulls saw the two-legs cutting up
and eating other cows, and were afraid. Lismelder said to them, A
little lost blood is nothing, when there is life to be given. The
bulls accepted what Lismelder said, and troubled her no more.
Later, the cows complained that the two-legs were taking their
milk, and Uralda explained that by treating the two-leg children
as their own, there would always be two-legs. And, wherever there
were two-legs, there would be fat and happy cows. This comforted
them. Lismelder returned to the land of mortals, her quest
successful despite her wounds. Over the next few days, people from
all over Dragon Pass brought us cows, thanking for having
performed the Blessings of Uralda heroquest, and bringing health
and fertility to everyones herds.
A delegation of the clans leading men raised serious complaints
again about the job Marlesta was doing as chief. The ring reminded
the complainers of their obligation to follow chosen leaders.
We raided the Vostangi and eluded their patrols. Jostharl struck
down a Vostang god-talker before the enemy was ready to fight,
then collected his powers for the battle to come. He struck down
several enemy warriors, but could have done more. We drove the
Vostangi from the battlefield, and were able to plunder their
tula.
Inganna Pine-Home of the Vostangi came to plead for peace and to
offer us 23 cows as one-time tribute. We accepted their tribute.
We swore to Humakt and then to Ernalda to refrain from raiding the
Vostangi for at least ten seasons. Of course these oaths were
binding on them as well.
Our expedition to Mount Kero Fin returned. Jostharl had a wondrous
tale to tell. He and the others were exploring the snowy reaches
of Orlanths mother, when they found themselves swept away to
participate in an ancient battle, fighting against the forces of
Lokamayadon, the traitorous priest who sought to eclipse Orlanth.
Jostharl and the others fought against dragonewts riding monstrous
lizards. Despite the confusing circumstances and difficult odds,
our explorers fought well. Another great gust blew them back to
Kero Fin, where wind spirits rewarded us. They pledged to come to
our aid and fight on our behalf against any other clan of Dragon
Pass. They would fight one battle only, but would come whenever we
called.
Brandig could not persuade the Squat Oaks to create a new trading
route.

We were raided by the Tusk Riders. We showed the head of Markanth

Margrainsson, and the Tusk Riders pulled back in confusion. We
drove the Tusk Riders from the field with a withering hail of
stones and arrows.
A plague of snakes came upon us, upsetting the cattle and
frightening the children. We sacrificed to Ernalda, the Earth
Mother. The snakes went away.
The harvest was plentiful.
Our holy people saw great scars appear on the surface of the
chaotic red moon. Harvar conducted a divination ritual to
understand what was happening. Harvar looked at the entrails of a
sheep, and saw in them the image of a great and terrible horseman.
This horseman had ridden to the moon, where he was destroying the
Lunar servants of chaos.
Orendal, a hunter of the Hiord clan asked permission to hunt a
great white stag on our land. We said he could hunt it in
cooperation with our own hunters. Together, they caught the stag.
It was a magnificent beast indeed, and there was glory enough for
both clans.
We were able to attract 11 new carls to the clan. They brought
with them 12 children.
We were raided by the Beastfolk. We showed the head of Markanth
Margrainsson, and the Beastfolk pulled back in confusion. We drove
the Beastfolk from the field with a withering hail of stones and
arrows.
1379
The god-talkers heard metal ringing in the distance, but could not
tell if it was bells or swords.
Tarkala attempted the heroquest of Orlanth and Aroka. Tarkala
became as one with Orlanth. Ernalda told him that his nephew,
Daga, was causing a drought and harming the people. Orlanth said
that he would drive off or kill Daga. Tarkala fought against Daga.
Stoically did Tarkala take the ninety-nine blows meant for
Orlanth. Tarkala gathered weapons, then other enemies attacked
her. Tarkala slew trolls with her klanth, and took their weapon,
the Darkwind. Gagarth buffeted Tarkala with the awesome Wind From
Above. She returned a punch that stunned Gagarth, and Tarkala took
the Wind From Above. Tarkala blinded the Dark Woman by spitting
Widebrew at her. Tarkala found another heroquester, who proposed
to take the role of Orlanths brother Urox, saying it was his
right. She told the Storm Bull to follow her. When Tarkala arrived
to fight Aroka, she saw many Chaos creatures swarming towards her.
The Storm Bull told her to go fight Aroka, leaving the Chaos
creatures to him. And that is what Tarkala did. At last Tarkala
found the lair of Aroka, and fought the dragon. Aroka tried to
destroy Orlanth. The storm god released the Four Winds, blinding

the dragons eyes. He released the Upper Wind, which dried out the
enemys tongues. He captured Arokas breath inside the magical
Sack of Winds and threw it away. Then Orlanth seized its jaws and
tore the dragon asunder. Tarkala successfully completed the
heroquest, and was cheered by all. She brought back the magical
Darkwind from the place of the gods.
A war broke out between the Aranwyth and Colymar tribes, causing
disruption of trade. We offered to broker peace between the
warring tribes. Brandig persuaded the king of the Aranwyth to
attend a peace parley. Valensta convinced the king of the Colymar
that it was time to stop the war.
An ill-omen vexed us when a young, unmarried woman of our clan saw
the shadow of a bird pass over her. We sacrificed to the gods for
luck. The god-talkers said the signs were good, and that the bird
shadow which passed over Umathkar should be ignored.
We served as intermediaries at peace negotiations between the
kings of the Aranwyth and Colymar tribes, Swen and Orlkarnth. We
told them, We should all build a town together, so all will
prosper. Swen was silent for a long time. Then he said, It is a
very strange idea, but for some reason I think I want to agree to
it. Orlkarnth was suspicious of his rivals quick agreement, and
said that we must be in collusion with his enemy. We said to them,
If one of you breaks the peace, our tribe will join your foe and
fight you. Swen seemed to take this threat with due seriousness.
Orlkarnth was likewise chastened. They agreed to make peace, with
our ready swords as guarantors.
Enent was accused of deliberately spreading disease. We tried
magic to cure her madness. We found that she could not be helped;
the madness was too strong in her. We outlawed her. She left our
tula, muttering.
Harvar began the Lhankor Mhy Finds the Truth heroquest. He was
unable to enter the realm of the gods.
1380
The god-talkers foretold few arguments within the clan.
Oranda, daughter of Kagradus and Dorasa, went missing. Her parents
thought she was at Clan Old Owl, in the company of a former
suitor, Orlaront. We went to the Old Owls and asked Oranda if it

was her will to marry Orlaront. She said it was, so we allowed it,
although it was contrary to tradition.
We stole 20 cows and 26 sheep from the Peluski.
Bandits blocked our emissary to the Old Owl clan. Brandig and his
forces killed and scattered them.
We sent Brandig with gifts to the Old Owls. They were pleased with
our generosity. They said that we were their friends, and that we
could call on them in the future if we needed to.
Strange foreigners were found defiling one of Ernaldas holy
sheds. Our women conducted a ritual of purification. We conducted
a ritual to try to divine Ernaldas desires. The divination
indicated mercy, so we simply drove them off.
Dorasas uncle found out that she was sneaking off into the forest
to speak with a spirit. We sacrificed to the spirit. Our godtalkers said that we had probably made a mistake, because the
signs were all bad. This spirit meant us harm, and now we had
given it strength.
A delegation of the clans leading men raised serious complaints
again about the job Marlesta was doing as chief. The rings legal
arguments for Marlesta fell on deaf ears. When questioned, their
spokesman admitted that they were supporters of Broyan. Marlestas
clever oration reaffirmed her right to rule.
She cured the foreigner of his foreignness, and so he protected
Yaransor. He said his name was Elmal. Yaransor healed many storm
people, but was then confronted with Orlanth, who wanted to kill
her. Yaransor healed his wounded judgment; he made her one of his

The rift within our
clan was healed.
We sent Brandig with gifts to the Brown Boars. They were pleased
with our generosity.
1381
Orlanth said we would have good luck on raids this year.
The Isoltings challenged us and others to a cooking contest. We
volunteered to serve as judges. We chose the deserving clan, the
Isoltings.
A couple from another clan offered to sell us the Winking
Sapphire. We paid what they asked. We put the Winking Sapphire in
a safe place.
We raided the Anzarni. As the battle began, Aslandar felt bursting
with magical power. Aslandar fought like a hero, but even heroes
fail. He drove the Anzarni about the battlefield, slaying as he
went, but in the end their swords and spears brought him low. We
drove the Anzarni from the battlefield, and were able to plunder
their tula.
Explorers encountered a bark-clad shaman who predicted a dispute
between neighbors and warned against a rain of fire. We decided to
find the shaman and give him a gift. They looked high and low for
the shaman, but did not find him.
Rangoron, a weaponthane of our clan, wished to marry Ostlana of
the Anzarni clan. Ostlanas clan demanded that Rangoron steal the
famous magical plow of the Jenestni for them. We asked the girls
ring to reconsider the terms of marriage. Over the objections of
Ostlanas mother, who was a member of the Anzarni ring, it was
decided that a normal bride price and dowry would suffice. The
marriage would go ahead, with no thefts or feuds.
We hosted the wedding banquet of Ostlana and Rangoron. We composed
a poem in honor of the Anzarni. They beamed with joy as we
improvised our verses.
Umathkar of the Peluski clan gave us five fine horses, and asked
for our support in a matter that would soon come before the moot.
We gave a reciprocal gift. At the moot, we supported the Narri
cause. The other clans agreed with us, and the Narri won their
case.
Survivors of an unfortunate expedition to the harsh plains of Prax
returned to our tula. Some of them were wounded. 2 lay dead in
Prax, their bones turning to chalk under that lands baleful sun.
1382
It was an auspicious year for heroquesting.

Valensta began the Ernalda Feeds the Tribe heroquest. Daga, god of
drought, attacked Valensta. Valensta survived Dagas blows.
Valensta went to the elves and asked for their help. The elves
accepted her, and gave her the seed she needed. The seed burrowed
into the earth and led Valensta to Maran Gor, who was keeping
Barntar as her thrall. Valensta convinced Maran Gor to release
Barntar by telling her that without him, the people would starve.
Valensta found Esra and Uralda in the halls of the dead, held
prisoner by Ty Kora Tek. Valensta invoked their kinship, and Ty
Kora Tek returned Esra and Uralda to her. Valensta tried to leave
the tunnel in the earth, but a terrible woman stood in the way.
Valensta invoked her kinship with the terrible woman, who agreed
to let them pass. The carls were reconciled to the clan again,
amid the relieved weeping of all in the clan.
We saw a rainbow; the people were cheered by this good omen. With
this blessing, we sought to build friendships. The chief and
thanes of the Hendart clan pledged their friendship to us.
We stole 23 cows and 19 sheep from the Wildcats.
Enastakos sought the support of the ring in a boundary dispute
with his neighbor, Hendrick of clan Peluski. We told Hendrick and
Enastakos to arm-wrestle for the disputed land. They did so. After
an epic day of matches and rematches, the two became inseparable
friends, and ended their dispute.
We stole 22 cows and 16 sheep from the Undaroli.
Endal, a thane of the Jenestni clan, asked us for the details of
the Ernalda Feeds the Tribe story. We told him what he wanted to
know. He thanked us and departed. After Endal left, our godtalkers said that our clan magic had suffered because we aided the
irreverent. They said that Garneneva, the chief of the Jenestni,
is so impious that the gods want nothing to do with her.
Explorers encountered a bark-clad shaman who predicted an ice
storm and warned against an attack by a giant spider.
Lawspeakers and warriors of the Estarelder tribe threatened us
with war and demanded tribute. We told them we had not offended
them. Their lawspeakers finally agreed that the so-called offenses
were all just misunderstandings. They said they would advise their
queen not to make war on us.
Fighting again broke out between the Aranwyth and Colymar tribes.
We conducted a divination to see who was at fault. The spirits of
our ancestors told us that both tribes were equally to blame. We
repeated our threat. Swen, king of the Aranwyth, laughed at the
delegates we sent to him. You come not with swords, but with
talkers, and we see how empty your threats are! We decided to
broker a different kind of peace between them.

We served as intermediaries at peace negotiations between the

kings of the Aranwyth and Colymar tribes, Swen and Orlkarnth. We
told them, We should all build a town together, so all will
prosper. Swen was silent for a long time. Then he said, It is a
very strange idea, but for some reason I think I want to agree to
it. Orlkarnth was also puzzled, but finally agreed. It is a new
thing, and we have learned to distrust new things. But you make it
seem as if there is little risk in trying.
The forces of cold and darkness attacked our land with snow and
wind. Our herds were threatened. We sought the help of Orlanthi
Wind Lords from many clans. The Wind Lords were driven back, and
the demons left only when they wanted to. Our herds suffered
serious losses.
Second, she was attacked by biting things with
flat teeth that crush muscles. Lismelder withstood the second
attack of the biting things, but suffered further, grievous
injuries. Third, she was attacked by biting things that lurk
behind rocks. Lismelder withstood the third attack of the biting
things, but again her flesh was torn, and the world swam before
her eyes. Although it took every last bit of her strength,
Lismelder kept on going. Blinded by pain, she passed the tula of
the two-legged people, and became lost. Lismelder was lost in the
realm of the gods. She looked for light, but found only darkness.
She gasped for air, but her lungs breathed only dust. She sought
warmth, but there was only cold. She used calm thinking to escape.
Lismelder found herself in the halls of the dead. When she tried
to leave, Ty Kora Tek barred her way. She asked Lismelder to
choose which of a number of tokens best represented her spirit.
Lismelder chose the horn. Ty Kora Tek said that Lismelder had
chosen correctly, and let her return to the land of mortals.
Although the people were disappointed that Lismelders quest had
failed, at least she had survived the ordeal.
Our shepherds took part in the fighting kite festival. We gave
gifts to the other clans. They expressed gratitude for our
generosity. The shepherds of the Narri won the contest.
With the kings of the Aranwyth and Colymar tribes at our side, we
embarked on the building of a town. We conducted a divination. The
spirits of our ancestors told us that they had heard whisperings
from the realm of the gods. Our little town was destined to grow

into a great city, one that would always be remembered in history.

The founders of that town were also destined for greatness, if
they made the right decisions in the seasons to come. Our next
challenge would be to settle a war between men and wolf-men. We
conducted a divination to pick a name for the town, which
suggested we call it Esradan.
1383
The omens said that Chalana Arroy would reward us if we refrained
from raiding this year.
Brandigs ability at bargaining was acknowledged to be of heroic
level.
Progress on the building of our new town continued. We sent
delegations to Heortland to find craftsmen and artisans to live in
the new town. Our missions found many people eager to come to our
new town and help bring about its prosperity. The clans of Dragon
Pass celebrated us for finding these people, and for creating
opportunity by bringing them here. The artisans themselves gave us
fine gifts, so that everyone would know of their skills.
Odayla cultists offered to perform a ritual to make the hunting
better in our area. We accepted their offer, and gave them gifts.
They thanked us for the gifts and departed, telling us that we
would know when the ritual had been completed when the forest
filled with elk.
Esradan was completed, and the people of the various tribes were
happy. We chose to embark on the Issaries the Conciliator
heroquest.

Oriska and Paratur made
peace. Through this talking, they made trade. And with trade,
traveling began again, and the world started to knit itself back
into place. Brandig had done his work, and prepared to leave the
realm of the gods. After the others left, Brandig was left alone
with the tiger Paratur. Paratur purred, Now, I never did promise
not to eat you, did I? But I brought you peace! Brandig
protested. There is such a thing as too much peace, Paratur
said. Paratur leapt upon Brandig and tried to devour him. Brandig
was badly mauled by the Big-Tooth, but escaped and made it back to
the realm of mortals. The people celebrated Brandigs successful
enactment of the Issaries the Conciliator myth. Everyone said that
Brandig seemed more confident, with an air of wisdom about him.
The god-talkers said that Issaries had blessed the town. People
from outside the clan thought we were odd to forego the benefit
for the greatest good in favor of smaller, personal blessings.
A dispute broke out between the pig priestesses and the grain
priestesses. We urged the pig priestesses of Clan Taraling to
preach humility. The Mralota priestesses of Clan Taraling agreed
to speak to our Mralota priestesses, and to urge restraint.
One of our exploration parties found gems in a cliff on our tula.
We spotted a cattle raid by the Wildcats. We exchanged missile
fire with them, but never closed.
Three young men all sought the hand of Enastarra, a young woman of
our clan renowned for her cleverness and beauty. We said that the
winner of a series of contests could have her hand. The people
were excited, and others came from miles around to witness the
contests. We conducted favorable trade deals, and were given gifts
by our neighbors. The contests were won by Orstanor of the Peluski
clan. He told us the story called The Great Darkness. Enastarra
seemed satisfied that she had the best man of the three. Our godtalkers were disappointed, as they already knew the myth.
The harvest was poor.

Arnbord, a thane of the Jenestni clan, asked us for information

about Swen, chief of the Squat Oak clan. He reminded us that we
owed his people a favor. We endeavored to answer his questions.
Arnbord asked us if Swen was cautious or daring. We answered,
Swen is very daring. Arnbord departed, and thanked us for the
information. Not long afterwards, he returned to our tula to thank
us again. Your words gave us insight into Swen, and we used that
insight to set up a favorable trade arrangement. He gave us
gifts, and the people were happy.
The Isolting clan offered us 40 cows worth of goods in exchange
for telling them our source of gemstones. We refused their offer.
Arkilla, the ranking Uralda priestess of the Anzarni clan, wanted
to marry our melancholy young weaponthane Minaryth, but he was
reluctant. We conducted a divination. The spirits of our ancestors
said that we had unnecessarily disturbed them from their revels in
the Halls of the Dead. Any fool could see that the clan ring had
the right to make matches for its young people. Marlesta spoke to
Minaryth, disputing his objections to the match. Minaryth admitted
that other marriages prospered despite great age differences. The
match was made, sealing an alliance between our two clans. The
people of both clans rejoiced.
1384
The omens foretold good fortune this year.
Beneva was acknowledged by all to have a green thumb.
We learned that the Culbrea and Estarelder tribes were fighting a
losing war with the Telmori. We sent a delegation to tell Hauberk
Jon we would make peace with the Telmori on his behalf. Aransanda
and a coterie of warriors made their way to Hauberk Jons last
known encampment. They hid behind rocks as Telmori warriors passed
by.
Aransanda found Hauberk Jon. Aransanda said to him, We might
fail, but you risk nothing by letting us try. This is true,
Hauberk Jon said, if you fail, I lose nothing. If you succeed,
perhaps this vicious war will end.
Brandig, accompanied by warriors, found the Telmori encampment and
entered it, interrupting their funeral rites. Brandig offered them
gifts. Tentatively at first, they accepted the gifts. Brandig
groveled like a junior wolf acknowledging the supremacy of the
pack leader. The Telmori growled at us. Some of their chieftains
and shamans ran up and bit Brandig and his companions, drawing
blood. But they did not kill Brandig. Slowly, Brandig won their
trust, and they said they would make peace with us, if Brandig
could revive their slain chieftain.
The Telmori took Brandig to the bier of their slain chieftain.
Brandig tried to magically revive Vraling. Vraling, whose neck was
broken, whose body was white from loss of blood, whose chest was

torn open, writhed and stirred upon his bier. His broken bones
cracked back together again. His body filled with new blood. His
wounds sealed up. He sat up on his death pallet and said, Who has
rescued me from the Howling Place? Brandig stepped forward and
claimed credit for the deed, and also claimed the right to make
peace. Vraling promised to meet us in our clan hall in a seasons
time.
We stole 26 cows and 17 sheep from the Narri.
The Telmori leader Vraling Creekleaper led a peace delegation to
our clan hall. We offered them territory. Vraling Creekleaper
said, Long have we wandered, as if under a curse. Your offer of
territory ends our curse, so we will make peace with you. The
people of our tribe were overjoyed to hear of this peace, and the
people of the Culbrea and Estarelder tribes were glad that the
Telmori war was finished.
We stole 16 cows and 24 sheep from the Six Brothers.
A creature we had not seen before came to talk to us. He called
himself Mathrania the Magnificent, and requested a parley with the
clan ring. He was sort of like a dragon, yet not a dragon. We
invited him inside the clan hall. Mathrania politely declined to
enter the hall, fearing that he would bump his head, but spoke
with us in the market square. Mathrania knew of our customs, and
asked us which of the Six Social Virtues was most important. We
told him that hospitality was the most important virtue. He
thanked us for our answer. He gave us an archaic form of the
Parting Words, and left.
As Esradan grew, the kings of the Aranwyth and Colymar tribes
squabbled over the right to demand gifts from its artisans and
traders. We said to the kings, We must create a town ring to
settle such disputes. They thought on this for a while and then
said, We are fighting because there is no one to make final
decisions in this new town. You are right; the only way to
preserve this town, which makes wealth for us, is to create a town
ring. And so the three tribes made a town ring, each of them
seating some of its own members on the ring. The motion rune on
our magic banner glowed, so we knew we had done the right thing.

was no traitor. The elves

agreed that Dagas drought might affect them, and gave her the
seed she needed. The seed burrowed into the earth and led Valensta
to Maran Gor, who was keeping Barntar as her thrall. Valensta said
that Barntar was needed. Maran Gor would not listen to her
arguments. Valensta convinced Maran Gor to release Barntar by
telling her love was stronger than hate. Valensta found Esra and
Uralda in the halls of the dead, held prisoner by Ty Kora Tek.
Valensta appealed to kinship, but Ty Kora Tek said this meant
nothing to her. She said that Esra and Uralda would be unwanted
life. Ty Kora Tek would not relent. Valensta told Ty Kora Tek that
the people would starve, and Ty Kora Tek relented. Valensta tried
to leave the tunnel in the earth, but a terrible woman stood in
the way. Valensta invoked her kinship with the terrible woman, who
agreed to let them pass. The people were disappointed that
Valensta failed to make proper peace with the elves; we would not
be able to go fearlessly into the forest.
Umathkar, a member of the Turtle ring, came seeking help against a
gigantic wyrm. We tried to convince the wyrm to move along.
Aransanda sought out the wyrm and told it that it was unfairly
harming the people of clan Turtle. It replied that people were
interlopers in Dragon Pass, and that we should count ourselves
lucky that the dragonkin confined their eating to a few farm
animals.
Horse-Spawn surrounded the town, warfare on their minds. Tarkala
offered to marry the Horse-Spawn King. At first, the Horse-Spawn
were angry. Then they laughed. Then something strange happened.
Their grizzled elders spurred their horses to the middle of their
formation, where their war leaders were. They consulted with the
war leaders, who looked surprised and confused. Their parley
lasted for a long time. Then their war leader spoke up, It may be
that there are certain prophecies. They make your strange offer
acceptable, so we will not kill you now. In one season, send
Tarkala and delegation to seek audience with our great king. Then
they rode off, their plans for war interrupted.
We spotted a cattle raid by the Jenestni. We drove the Jenestni
off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula.
1385
The god-talkers saw many ravens, and suspected there would be
battle later in the year.
Tarkala led a delegation to propose marriage to the Luminous
Stallion King, ruler of the Horse-Spawn. The king promised to stop
calling his people Horse-Spawn. From now on, the Luminous
Stallion King said, you must call us what we call ourselves
Grazers. Tarkala offered him gifts. Tarkala proposed marriage to
him. The Luminous Stallion King said that he would sponsor a
contest. In order to win the contest, Tarkala would have to pass
three great tests of Earth. The tests would be chosen by Ferena
Brooslayer, the high priestess of Maran Gor. The winner of the
contest would marry him and become Queen of Dragon Pass. Tarkala

would be one of several contestants. Tarkala agreed to these

terms.
Tarkala met the other contestants for the hand of the Luminous
Stallion King. Tarkala assured them of a fair contest. Yathanda
said she had heard of our clan, and that nothing she had heard was
good. If you were to tell me that water is wet, I would doubt
your words, she said. Ernaldness said, You are honorable, friend
Tarkala. Such an assurance is redundant, for the good name of your
clan is known throughout Dragon Pass.
Tarkala traveled to the Hidden Temple, where the crone priestess
of Maran Gor demanded that she prove that she was worthy enough to
learn of the three tests. Tarkala reminded the crone of our good
relations with the Hidden Temple. You are a liar and a fool! she
cackled. Tarkala chose to give her gifts. The crone said that she
was pleased by the gifts, but not yet pleased enough that she
could tell Tarkala from a cottar. Tarkala scolded her for
confusing kings with shepherds. The crone muttered something
unintelligible, and then said she would share with us the secret
of the tests. First, said the crone, you must tame a dragon.
Then, you must win the favor of the Brass Man. Finally, you must
be reborn as daughter of the mountain, and thereby win the
blessing of the goddess Kero Fin.
Harvar began the Lhankor Mhy Finds the Truth heroquest. He was
unable to enter the realm of the gods.
We stole 33 cows and 31 sheep from the Jenestni.
We stole 27 cows and 31 sheep from the Jenestni.
Eonislara, betrothed to Jorator of the Taraling clan, was seduced
by Korol, the notorious troublemaking poet of the Undaroli clan.
We went to the Undaroli and said that we expected Korol to marry
her. You mistake my intentions, Korol said. I meant not to eat
the whole cake, but merely to sample the dough. When our people
heard this, they were outraged. One of the warriors composed a
poem. It was about how galling it is to have to swallow an insult.
Brandig led a caravan to trade with the Rune Ducks.
All of the other clans in our tribe suffered bad harvests.
Enastakos was caught with trade goods that he did not buy through
the clan ring. We stood him up before his fellows, and held him
out as an example of disobedience towards chosen leaders.
We got word that a dragon was laying waste to the steads of the
Undaroli clan. Tarkala decided to engage the dragon in a riddling
contest. Alone, Tarkala went to the Undaroli tula, where the
dragon soon appeared. Tarkala approached it, and invited it to
join a riddling contest. The dragon seemed surprised at first.
Then it reached for Tarkala and grabbed her in one of its great

claws. Then the dragon said, By asking for a riddle, you have
answered one, and completed the first of your tests. I shall now
give you a puzzle in return, one which you do not have to answer.
It rubbed the queen up against its iridescent scales. The queen
was alarmed at first, but the gesture seemed to be a friendly one.
Then it disappeared, as if it had been nothing more than a dream.
Eonislara turned out to be pregnant. Her kinfolk were embarrassed.
The ring scolded her kinfolk for being unreasonable. The people
were happy that the clan leaders had said these things, for no
blame should attach to a woman for a child born outside of
marriage.
We spotted a cattle raid by the Wildcats. We drove the Wildcats
off, and their survivors left without plundering our tula.
We spotted a cattle raid by the Jenestni. We drove the Jenestni

Our seers had a vision of a fence falling down and our tula
covered with strangers.
A man of brass was seen walking about the footpaths of the Quivini
Mountains. We conducted a divination. The spirits of our ancestors
told us that the Brass Man would be a friend in disguise. However,
they warned, a queen should have warriors with her, even when
going to meet a friend. We sent Tarkala with gifts in hand. For
many weeks the queen journeyed through the mountains, until she
found the Brass Man. Tarkala offered gifts to this man of brass,
who raised his faceplate, revealing himself as a dwarf in brass
armor. The dwarf unrolled a scroll which he kept at his belt, and
squinted at it. Most useful materials, all criteria fulfilled,
said the dwarf. Very well, not shoot you. The dwarf kept
walking. Tarkala shouted after him, asking if she had gained his
favor. Yes, yes, said the dwarf. Not waste time! Schedule,
schedule!
Insterid of the Orlundi clan accused Harran of the Turtle of
unfair trade; both asked Queen Tarkala to adjudicate the case. We
conducted a divination. The spirits of our ancestors said that
Harran had in fact used a Listening Wind against Insterid. Tarkala
ruled in favor of Insterid. Insterid praised us for seeing with an
unclouded eye, and gifted us with half of the horses we had
ordered Harran to turn over to her. Harrans face lost its usual
smile, but he said nothing about our verdict.
The god-talkers said that it was time to become the daughter of
Kero Fin. Tarkala presided over a sacrifice to Kero Fin. The godtalkers said that the signs were good; Kero Fin had received our
sacrifice. Tarkala traveled to the mountain and found a cave
there. Tarkala recited the lineage of her people, mentioning the
things they had done to strengthen the earth. The mountain shook,
and Tarkala knew that she had become the daughter of Kero Fin,

granting her sovereignty over Dragon Pass. As she exited the

caves, she saw the ghosts of all of her clans dead carls gathered
below. The ghosts cheered for her, heralding this great turning
point in the history of Dragon Pass.
Tarkala approached the Luminous Stallion King to tell her he had
passed the earth tests. Tarkala said, I have tamed the dragon,
won the favor of the Brass Man, was reborn within the earth. You
do not need to tell us this, the Luminous Stallion King said. We
already know. He said that the wedding would occur when Earth
season next began.
The girl Voballa, adopted from our clan by the Turtles, told us
that she wanted to come back to our clan. She turned out simple,
not at all great hero of the Knowing God the Turtles thought they
had adopted. We demanded the right to adopt her back again. They
were reluctant to admit that Voballa was not the girl mentioned in
their scroll of prophecy. But when they did admit this, they could
see no reason to keep her, and returned her to her birth kin.
Tarkala married the Luminous Stallion King and became Queen of
Dragon Pass. The king of the dragonewts told her, You have taken
pieces of old things, and made them into new and powerful things.
You made things better by turning them into their opposites. You
stopped a war by turning it into stones and mortar. You made peace
by conjuring a wolf. You found ancient secrets of the earth, and
now use them to make another new thing, joining together the
people of cows and storm with the people of horses and sun. This
was the first day of a great new kingdom, a kingdom that will one
day take Tarkalas name. It will one day enter a desperate
struggle with a great empire, and its last queen will
