Trace thy Strings

Once a person is born in this world, in his or her body possess strings, strings that
are connected to the essentials that built this world. These are the strings to
dreams, hope and love. Each day we live unknowingly, that we already are tracing
to meet up the end of the string. But this task could be a very difficult one because
there are millions of strings around us, they vary, there are long, short, vulnerable
or strong, and possibly, as we meet up with these varying strings, we dwelled with
these, we become intertwined, and in the strings we built knots. And these knots
could either make our tracing have its shortcut or unfortunately, the other way
around. And this makes our journey to it be longer and be tiring. And we may be lost
along the way. But what is great about these strings is that no matter how thousand
knots were built in between, it will find ways for you and the other possessing the
string meet, in the most magical and the most mysterious ways.
The latter scenario of the strings of world is what happened between two persons,
two persons with opposing personalities in the wavy coast of Thailand. Their twirl
tracing of the path towards their dreams, hopes and true love becoming the theme
implies in the movie Teachers Diary. Teacher Ann, a brilliant and smart teacher
with strong affiliation to her beliefs and principles to her actions and work which
becomes the cause of conflict between her and the principal, that assigned her to a
houseboat school as the punishment of her not agreeing to remove her tattoo which
is considered to be a taboo. Who would have thought that this punishment will lead
her to trace the string toward her dream and love? Teacher Song, the one holding
the string, a retired wrestler who applied to be a teacher and was assigned to the
houseboat school a year after Teacher Ann resigned, he showed to be an
incompetent teacher in math and at first a weak person. Upon their stay, I saw how
both of them not change and mature as person but also change their students view
to life, a very heartwarming and inspiring act any teacher could reflect on.
Aside from this platonic situation having been incurred by a very classical thing; the
diary, the movie also showed the realistic situation that happens to students living
in remote areas and teachers teaching in remote areas. Which adds to the beauty
and objectivity of the movie for its not just above love and dreams but it is about
the reality which happens in the field of education in rural areas. Which is also why,
as a pre-service teacher, have educated and inspired me about teaching; multi
grade teaching and about what a teacher should be. This multi grade teaching
which I consider still a novel practice here in the Philippines because I barely knew
information about it, before what I associate with this is that this is method of
teaching where a teacher is teaching in a class where students are in different
levels. And that his was designed to support the educational needs of students who
live in remote areas and having a difficult time in going to school which is far from
their home. Still, even if weve been taught of how the teaching will be like I cannot
grasp in my mind the scenario, I mean it appears to me very confusing and
challenging. I think it would be chaotic and I kind of like felt insecure to the
possibility that I could actually be a competent and effective multi grade teacher.
But then this movie came out and fortunately it healed me. It showed me the
answers to my confusions. And I realize and said so that what is it like. I realize
that in teaching a multi grade class you have to have initiative and patience. The
scene where it showed how to do the assessment where teacher Ann made the
students do a board work and since they are in different levels she made a table a
put the students name on each column and then place different math problems
corresponding to their grade level, that is one clever and practical assessment. I like
it, I never thought about that Im was able to watch the movie.
There are lot of scenes that I love, I tell about two of my favorite scenes here in the
movie, I adore them, it became an inspiration and an eye opener to me and to
others whom have watch or who will be watching. First, the scene where Teacher
Ann courageously dove in and gets the dead body that Teacher Gigi has seen. And
when she was asked why she did do that incredible act as lady she answered that if
she have not took that action their students will be very scared enough to lose the
motivation to go to school. Which is very true, she showed to the students that
there is nothing to be afraid, or you have to be act and stay brave even if youre
scared- that is courage. Second one is the scene where a storm came. That scene
made my heart skip a beat, it appeared amazingly realistic. But what teacher Song
did is more amazing, he hugged the kids tightly and protected them as much as he
could and even if he saw that the diary, that is very dear to him, is slipping away
and fell in the water he just stayed there hugging the kids assuring that
everythings going to be fine. I think that part of the movie is like a symbolism. In
teaching, there are things that you have to sacrifice no matter how important it is,
you still have to, for the sake of your students.
Teacher Ann and Teacher Songs experiences are the knots that help them trace
their dreams, their purpose in life and of the love that they are meant to have. And
Im glad as viewer, as a pre-service teacher whose confusions settled, I knew if this
could be true their students will forever look up into them and be guided of their
outlook towards education. And what I wish for is for my country to address school
problems and reach out more areas that have who have rights to be educated.
Moreover I wish for my country to have more teachers like teacher Ann and Teacher
Song whom are dedicated, passionate and brave ones who made a difference
among everyone else. Lastly I wish that all of us may successfully trace the strings
towards our dreams, hopes and love we are born with. For the people who have
failed to find and be attached to their soul mates are the people who will fail having
a fulfilled life.
