The report discusses inland and marine fisheries production as well as aquaculture production in Batangas province for the first quarter of 2013. Some species saw increased production while others decreased due to various environmental and economic factors.

Production of Inland Municipal grew by 22.13 percent compared to the same quarter last year, attributed to better catches of several species including Dugong, Maliputo, Arroyo, Tilapia and Bangus. Most fishermen were able to catch more fish due to good water conditions and fast reproduction/growth of species in Taal Lake.

Good water conditions and the fast reproduction and growth of several species in Taal Lake allowed most fishermen to catch more fish. Higher market value also encouraged fishermen to target some species like Tilapia.

PROVINCE: BATANGAS

I.

GENERAL SITUATION
Production of Inland Municipal grew by 22.13 percent for the first quarter equated to
last years same quarter. The significant growth in production was attributed by better
catch of Dugong, Maliputo, Arroyo, Tilapia and Bangus. Most fishermen were fortified to
catch more fish brought about by good water condition and fast reproduction and growth
of species along Taal Lake.

II.

AQUACULTURE SPECIES SITUATION REPORT

1.

Milkfish Decent appearance in the water and there is also an increase in the

2.

number of fishing activity.

Tilapia Fishermen are energized and eager to catch this species due to its

3.

higher value.
Freshwater Goby (Biya) There is a limited volume of catch due to less
appearance of the specie brought by the strong current of the water.
4.
Mudfish (Dalag) There is an increase in number of

5.

fishermen catching this specie.

Tawilis (Freshwater Sardines) There is a lesser number of catch in nets because
it was suspected that the fingerlings were eaten by larger specie such as dugong

6.

or arroyo.
Silver Perch (Ayungin) Less recorded catch because this species is making not
so abundant during the 1st quarter.
7.
Arroyo There is a swift reproduction and growth

8.

in this specie.
Dugong The fishermen have increased the number of nets they use to catch this
specie which is in fact have a fast growth rate this quarter.
9.
Maliputo This specie was greatly visible, also it has a great value in
the market.

1ST QUARTER, 2013
NARRATIVE REPORT
REGION: IV A CALABARZON
PROVINCE: BATANGAS

III. GENERAL SITUATION

Production of Marine Municipal slightly move up by 1.57 percent compared to last
years same quarter. The hasty change was noted in continuous operation by fishing boat
operators since there is a decent weather condition and good visibility of different species.
Fishermen used different fishing gears like gill net, hook and line, beach slime, bayakor
and spear gun to catch more fish. Meanwhile, fishermen who temporarily shifted to work
as construction worker and tricycle driver were now encouraged to continue being a
fishermen because of better income in catching fish especially during these days.
IV.

MUNICIPAL SPECIES SITUATION REPORT

1. Roundscad It was a peak season and an abundant catch using eminence nets.
2. Skipjack Few fishermen had caught this specie due to its blur visibility.
3. Yellow fin Tuna Improved fishing gear used (beach slime and hook & line) and
there are a lot of days which are fully packed with fishing activities.
4. Frigate Tuna More fish catch due to great effort by the fishermen because of its
high demand for this specie
5. Indian Mackerel Due to good weather circumstance, fishermen allotted additional

fishing trips.
Big-eyed Scad Less number of fishermen catching this specie.
Eastern Little Tuna No data gathered about this specie.
Fimbriated Sardines No specie gathered nor monitored.
Indian Sardines More catch recorded in Brgy. San Andres, Bauan and Salong,
Calaca because beach slime gears were used by the resident fishermen on those

landing centers.
10. Indo Pacific Mackerel Limited number of fishing boats doing clasp in this species
also because of its low visibility rate.
11. Squid Availability of nets and increase number of fishermen using new gear in
catching squid.
12. Blue Crab Lesser number of fishermen and not in season resulting to its lower
presence.
13. Threadfin Bream (Bisugo) Limited fish catch due to less artificial bait
(pain).
14. Anchoives Abundant fish due to continuous fishing trips and more fishermen who
catch this specie.

15. Grouper Lesser number of fishing activity and insufficient supply of

hooks.
16. Big-eyed Tuna No catch of these specie in Municipal Fishing Zone.

QUARTERLY COMMERCIAL FISHERIES SURVEY

1ST QUARTER, 2013

NARRATIVE REPORT
REGION: IV A CALABARZON
PROVINCE: BATANGAS

V.

GENERAL SITUATION
Production of Commercial was amplified by 16.82 percent compared to last years of
the same quarter. The significant growth was recorded in Private and LGU Managed
landing center in Wawa, Pier, Nasugbu and Balumbato, Calatagan respectively. There
were 6 operational commercial fishing boats in Wawa, Nasugbu, and they go fishing in
Palawan water. According to the operators, the increase on the fish catch was mainly
attributed by continuous fishing operations brought about by good weather condition and
non occurrence of destructive typhoons that affect their fishing activity.
Traditional landing center also recorded 0.71 percent increase compared to the
previous years data of the same quarter. The minimal increase was due to more fishing
boats unload their catch in Anilao Proper, Mabini and increase in number of fishing boats
that also unloads in Laiya Aplaya, San Juan from the municipalities of Lobo.

VI.

MUNICIPAL SPECIES SITUATION REPORT

1. Roundscad - Increased because of the high catches contributed by the commercial
sector and also because of the large landings of volume needed in the market.
2. Skipjack - The skipjack fishing industry is swiftly weakening, with the decreasing
fish-catching ability due to the higher temperature during the quarter which is
resulting to percentage reduction.
3. Yellow fin tuna Because of the boosting pressure on resource, the stocks of yellow
fin tuna was improved.
4. Frigate tuna The increase in the volume of catch was due to better price offer of
fish traders and dealers in the Batangas.
5. Indian Mackerel - There was decreased because of unloading for marine products
owing to reduction in fishing trips brought about by very hot

temperature in both

weather and seas.

6. Eastern Little Tuna Continuous increase because of the attention given by the
Fishermen due to its importance and high demands by the public.
7. Fimbriated Sardines(Tunsoy) - The fishing area allowed the sardine species to
breed and spawn during the period and eventually increase in population
significantly because it has a great need for local and export merchandise.
8. Indo-Pacific Mackerel (Hasa-hasa) It was observed that the specie is making a
less appearance and there is also a limited number of fishermen who are willing to
catch the specie.
9. Squid - This specie was greatly damaged owed to strong current of water in the
Fishing grounds.
10. Blue Crab There is no data recorded that correspond with this specie.

11. Threadfin Bream (Bisugo) - This specie was greatly damaged owed to strong
current of water in the fishing grounds.
12. Anchovies - This increase was due to higher anchovy catch for processing fishmeal
and fish oil.
13. Grouper There is an increase because of the great demand for this specie and
also because it has a high value in the market.
14. Big-eyed Tuna the increase was owed to the lofty demand for export that forces
the fishermen to focus to this specie.

QUARTERLY AQUACULTURE SURVEY

1ST QUARTER, 2013
NARRATIVE REPORT
REGION: IV A CALABARZON
PROVINCE: BATANGAS

VII. GENERAL SITUATION

Overall production of Aquaculture was increase by 5.25 percent if we are going to
associate it with last years percentage during the same quarter. Aquaculture production
includes brackish water fishpond, freshwater fish cages and culturing of sea weeds. In
brackish water fish pond, operators were culturing P. Vannamei in the municipality of
Calatagan. Production of Vannamei increased due to good management by operators,
stocking good quality post larvae, proper feeding and fast growth of this type of shrimp.
Production of tilapia and milkfish in freshwater fish cages slightly increase due to
regulated stocking rate implemented by BFAR to avoid fish kill. Also, proper feeding and
good water condition contributed to a more stable and rapid fish growth.
Seaweeds production recorded at 43 percent decrease compare to last years data
of the same quarter. Decrease in production was mainly attributed by melting of seedling
due to too tropical weather condition and other seedlings did not grow well because they
were eaten by siganid fry or Kuyog. Meanwhile production of a caulerpa or lato also
decrease due to the hot weather condition and temporary non-operation of other seaweed
farmers caused by financial constraint.

VIII. AQUACULTURE SPECIES SITUATION REPORT

1. P. Vannamei - Production of P. Vannamei grew 134 percent compared to last years
quarter due to a better quality of post larvae, proper feeding and good salinity of
water. Fish pond operators were encouraged to proliferate their harvest due to more
demand in the market.
2. Milkfish There is an increase in production owed to fast growth of specie and
sufficient feeds used by the operators. Less mortality rate and regulated stocking
rate also helps to the increase of production throughout the quarter.
3. Tilapia Production of tilapia increase due to regular harvesting of operators using module
system. Operators used nets to filter the size of specie they wanted to harvest and the
smaller the size is not marketable in terms of size. They continue culturing smaller species
then transferred those small species to the other cages for the smaller specie to get
appropriate attention for their growth. All the cages which contains specie which are already
reaped were prepared to stock new fingerlings. Availability of good quality fingerlings, less
mortality rate and fast growth of specie was all because of the regulated stocking rate
implemented by BFAR.
4. Cootonii Seeweeds production decrease due to melting seedlings caused by too hot
temperature. It was also reported that the growing seedlings were eaten by a specie called
siganid or known as Kuyog.
5. Caulerpa (Lato) Caulerpa or locally known as Lato also experience shrinkage in its
production which is instigated to slow growth of seedlings, evident hot temperature,
and momentary non operation of seaweeds farmers who experience big losses
before and some financial incapacity
