Seniors fight
depressing
proposal for
funeral home
SHANNON MULLEN @MULLENAPP
JACKSON Of lifes two great certainties, taxes are
far more likely to trigger a march on Town Hall.
But, on rare occasions, death will draw a crowd, as it
did this past week when residents of the West Lake
adult community turned out in droves hoping to deepsix plans to build a funeral home directly across the
street.
This is not your garden variety parlor. The 19,000square-foot facility that the Oliverie Funeral Home intends to build on a six-acre site at Cooks Bridge Road
and Manhattan Street includes office space, an upstairs
residence and a catering hall where mourners could
hold their repasts.
In an eye-catching artists rendering, the facility resembles a rambling McMansion or a clubhouse at an upscale golf resort.
Except that its not.
Terri Barnaskas would be fine with either a McMansion or a golf course. But for her and many of her neighbors, the idea of a funeral complex so close to their
homes was D.O.A.
The site actually sits between two age-restricted
adult communities West Lake and Winding Ways. Together they total almost 2,000 households.

Scientists: Nasty
jellyfish washed
up on Shore beach
TODD B. BATES @TODDBBATESAPP

Box jellyfish spark fear among swimmers and deliver nasty stings.
Now Montclair State University scientists have confirmed that a dangerous box jellyfish washed up on the
beach in Bay Head last fall.
Im a bit surprised about this, said Jack Gaynor, an
associate professor of biology at the Montclair-based
university. This is kind of a nasty jelly and if this is in
our area now, thats a problem.
Stinging sea nettle jellyfish in the Barnegat Bay area
wont put anyone in the hospital, but this is a much
more serious jellyfish, this box jelly, Gaynor said. Im
kind of hoping this will not be a recurrence in New JerSee JELLYFISH, Page 7A

James Perri has battled a rare form of

rare, there was minimal funding to

So he and his wife started a foundation.
As an emergency room doctor,
Perri figured on support from the

He never anticipated the boost hes getting from

His Class of 1990 is celebrating its 25th anniversary

Everybody was just moved by the story of a
good guy from Manalapan, said Alison Finley, a

Perris story is one of resilience on two levels: his

for a generation.
The bonds dont break, Perri said. Its nice to
