Introduction
INTRODUCTION: HOW TO USE THIS MANUAL
This is a reference manual on the design, detailing, and drawing of partition walls that are a part of any
building processed by the MBS software. A file is provided with this manual that contains the
processing of a building with six partition walls. This example is described in PE 9-00-8.
HOW TO USE THIS MANUAL TO PROCESS PARTITION WALLS
1. Make a sketch of the partition or partitions that you want to include in your building. The sketch
should be both plan and elevation views of the wall.
2. Read PE 9-00-3 on detailing partition walls. Set the desired detailing methods and detailing
parameters.
3. Read PE 9-00-4 on new marker for detailing data files. Add the markers and entries to the
appropriate files.
4. Enter the partition wall data. Please use the following guides.
- See PE 9-00-1 to view screens for data entry.
- See Plan View of six partitions on Pg H1.
(The H pages follow the Help, Files Tab)
- See a 3D drawing of the six partitions on Pg H2.
- See a framing drawing for each of the partitions on pages H3 to H8.
- See the input file for each of the partitions on Pgs H9 to H11.
- See the help file for the DESCTRL.IN file on Pgs H12 to H18.
5. As the program designs the partition walls, read PE 9-00-2 on partition wall design.
6. As the program prepares the erection drawings for partition walls, read PE 9-00-5 on partition wall
drawings.
7. To check the program output for your partition wall, see the partition wall examples, PE 9-00-6,
9-00-7, 9-00-8, and 9-00-9.
Part

2.1
This can consist of up to six unique partition walls. For each partition the user will specify the
layout, framing members, bay spacings, girts, panels, colors, framed openings, partial walls and
intersections. Each screen is shown below with a description for each item on each screen.
Clicking on each partition button displays the partition screen. Each partition screen has the
<F1> help key and <ALT><F1> graphics help available.
A. PARTITION WALL - Layout, Framing
The first screen is the Partition Layout and Framing. This screen is shown below.
The partition orientation can be either Longitudinal or Transverse in orientation. The start and
end distances are entered for the wall, along with information about the start and end adjacent
wall Id and tie-in option. The wall side vs. offset is specified as 2 characters. The first
character specifies to which side of the location the wall framing occurs. The second
character specifies which side of the wall is the outside of wall. CL = centered on location
with left as outside, CR = centered on location with right as outside, RL = wall is to the right
of location with left side as outside, and LR = wall is to the left of location with right side as
outside. The quantity and locations of this wall are entered where locations are as measured
perpendicular to the wall. For the quantity to be more than one, the wall framing and tie-in
settings must be the same for all locations. The column depth is specified. The column type for
2010 Metal Building Software, Inc
10
start, interior, and end are entered. The rafter information is then entered including rafter type,
rotation, and rafter framing option.
B. PARTITION WALL - Bay Spacing
The second screen is the Partition Bay Spacing. This screen is shown below.
This screen is the same as the wall bay spacing screen. Bay spacing for the six partitions is
entered by selecting each of the six partition buttons.
C. PARTITION WALL - Girts
The third screen is the Partition Girt. This screen is shown below.
11
This screen is similar to the wall girt screen, including the top girt type. It also includes the
base angle, channel, and trim information. Flange strapping is not available on partition walls.
D. PARTITION WALL - Panels, Colors
The fourth screen is the Partition Panels/Colors screen. This screen is shown below.
12
The partition can have a panel on one or two sides. Each side can be a different panel, screw
length, color, and height. The trim for each side can also be different, and the partition can
have insulation. Trim color and insulation are included on this screen.
E. PARTITION WALL - Framed Openings
The fifth screen is the Partition Framed Openings screen. This screen is shown below.
This screen is the wall framed opening screen. Each partition can have up to two framed
openings per bay with a maximum of twenty per wall.
F. PARTITION WALL - Partial Walls
The sixth screen is the Partition Partial Wall screen. This screen is shown below.
13
14
This screen is similar to the partial wall screen for the walls. There is a new format for both
screens which allows the Base Type and Full Load option to be different for each partition
wall defined. Previously, any partial wall along the wall had the same Base Type and Full Load
option.
On the next page is a screen capture of the Partial Wall screen from the Wall book.
15
16
The partitions can intersect each other and continue on through each other. When a column
occurs at the intersection, then the column type and tie-in option must be specified. For
intersections occurring at a rigid frame interior column location, enter '-' as the added column
type.
NOTE: Intersecting partitions that continue on through each other without an added column
specified are designed and detailed to continue on through each other. There are no added
columns and girts are designed based on the bay spacing.
There are two other screens that have been updated to include partition data. The Code/Load
screen and Deflection Limit screen have been updated.
H. LOAD - Code, Loads
The Code, Loads screen now includes a setting for partition wind. The screen is shown
below. This applies to all designed components of the partition wall. Designed components
include: columns, girts, and panels.
I.
17
18
The partition input screens can be understood easier by reviewing the example building
included, PARTN2.zip. The paper copies are included in the partition manual. The plan view,
3D drawing, and DesCtrl.in file are included in the last section of the Partition Manual. The
Building Editor menu is arranged in the same order as the DesCtrl.in file. In the last section of
the Partition Manual is a portion of the help file pertaining to partitions.
2.2
19
Partition design is much like endwall design. Features available in the partition design include:
1. LOADING: There is a single wind load, pressure and suction, entered by the user during
building data entry that is the wind load for columns, girts, jambs, and panels. However, the
user can edit any of these loads on any of the walls.
2. COLUMNS: Available columns include C, D, R, W, O and U. You can set the column
size or let the program determine the size. You can set the rotation and base elevation of
each column. There is no weak axis column design. No axial load is considered in the
column design.
3. RAFTERS: The rafters can be short between the purlins, short below the purlins, or
continuous below the purlins. Rafter types include C, O, or U. There is no rafter design.
4. GIRTS: Flush or bypass girts are available, same choices as for the exterior walls. The
top girt can be of a different type. Top girts are located at the top of the wall panels. If the
front and back wall panels are not at the same elevation, two top girts will be used. Girt
flanges attached to wall panels are considered fully braced.
The partition wall design reports are the similar to the endwall design reports. There is a
separate report for each partition wall. If there are wall panels on both sides, there is a
separate panel report for each wall panel.

are similar to the EWDWG and SWDWG input lines. The first line defines the Paper Size,
Object Offset, and Scale Factor. The second line defines the Drawing Option, Contents
Options, Table Options, General Notes, and Logo. The third line defines User Details to place
on the Partition Drawings. The new lines are displayed below.

For the partition walls there are two new items: Contents Option and Display Option.
Contents Option can be set to 'F' for framing, 'S' for sheeting, and 'I' for insulation. Any
combination of these letters is also available: 'FS', 'FI', 'SI', 'FO', 'SO', and 'FSI', which will
combine the desired views onto the one drawing.
Display Option can be set to 'P' or 'F'. The 'P' denotes a partial view, or partition area only.
The 'F' denotes a full view, which includes the building outline. Both will contain the same
information, but 'F' is a smaller view to include the building outline.
These lines Partition Drawing Size Factors, Partition Drawing Options, and Partition Drawing
User Details transfer to the PartDwg*.IN files, where '*' is numbers 1 through 6.
The erection drawings for the partition walls are similar to the endwall and sidewall drawings.
There are up to four different views shown on the drawing: framing plan, up to two sheeting
plans, and the insulation plan. The framing plan labels the column, rafter, jambs, headers, girt,
angles, and loose clip locations. The framing plan includes the member table, angle table, and
clip table. The sheeting plans will layout the front/left, and/or the back/right sheeting plans. The
panel lengths and trim locations are labeled, and a trim table is included. The insulation plan will
be included when insulation is called for on the wall. The cut lengths are shown on the plan
and a table notes the insulation roll that the cut is from.
There is not a utility program included to add these new lines to your DWGCTRL.IN file.
However, a DWGCTRL.NEW is included to cut and paste to your default DWGCTRL.IN

psf wind load is 16.67 * 10 * 23.952 / 8 = 11.95 ft-kips. The allowable moment in a W8X10
that has an unbraced length of 7.33' is 17.7 ft-kips.
The column deflection is 5 * 16.7 * 10 * 23.954 1.728 / (384 * 29,000 * 30.8) = 1.38". This
compares to an allowable of 23.95 * 12 / 120 = 2.40". Hence the W8X10 column is used.
B3. RIGID FRAME INTERIOR COLUMN
The rigid frame interior column is pinned at each end and subject to an axial load to support the
rigid frame. In addition, due to this partition wall, the column is subjected to a moment from the
wind load. From the rigid frame design a 6" by 6" tube column with 3/16" wall thickness was
selected. Member area is 4.27 in^2, section modulus 7.93 in, and radius of gyration 2.36 in. It
has a maximum axial load of 24.2 kips and consider the moment from wind on the wall to be
the same as the above column of 11.95 ft- kips. The column axial stress is 24.2 / 4.27 = 5.67
ksi. The column bending stress is 11.95 * 12 / 7.93 = 18.1 ksi. The allowable bending stress
are 0.60 * 46 = 27.6 ksi and axial allowable with an unbraced length of 7.33' is 24.3 ksi. The
combined axial and bending check is:
5.67 / 24.3 + 18.1 / 27.6 = 0.23 + 0.66 = 0.89 < 1.33, therefore okay.
C. PARTITION WALL DETAILING
Many parts of the partition detailing are the same as a typical endwall. Only those parts which
are unique for this partition wall be presented. Those parts include: length of girt G-55, length
of column PC-8, and length of girt G-59. These items will illustrate calculating member length
of members that frame into the rigid frame rafter and column and also detailing the girt
connection to a tube column.
C1. LENGTH OF GIRT G-55.
This girt connects to the hot rolled column on the right and to the rigid frame sidewall column

rather than the column length. The moment maximum resulting from the 10 psf wind load is
(10 * 10) * (7.333) / 8 = 0.67 ft-kips. The allowable moment for the 8X2CH16 that has an
unbraced length of 7.33' is 1.90 ft-kips.
The deflection of the 8X2CH16 column is 5 * (10 * 10) * (7.333)4 * (1.728) / (384 * 29000 *
6.373) = 0.04 inch. The limiting deflection is span divided by 180, which is (7.333 * 12) / 180 =
0.48 inch. Hence, the 8X2CH16 is selected.
B3. INTERIOR COLUMN DESIGN
Consider the first interior column from the left end of the wall. It is labeled PC-12 on the
drawing. Load width for the column is 20'-0". The column length is 24'-2" plus the rise in the
roof of 1.666' minus the 8" purlin depth resulting in a column length of 25.166'. The calculated
moment from the 10 psf wind load is (10 * 20) * (25.166) / 8 = 15.83 ft-kips. The allowable
moment for the W8X10 that has an unbraced length of 7.33' is 17.7 ft-kips.
The deflection of the W8X10 column is 5 * (10 * 20) * (25.166)4 * (1.728) / (384 * 29000 *
30.8) = 2.02 inch. The limiting deflection is span divided by 180, which is (25.1666 * 12) / 180
= 1.68 inch. Hence, the W8X10 did not work due to deflection considerations. The next 8"
deep column, W8X13, gives a deflection of 5 * (10 * 20) * (25.166)4 * (1.728) / (384 * 29000 *
30.8) = 1.57 inch. Hence the W8X13 column is selected.
C. PARTITION WALL DETAILING
Many parts of the partition detailing are the same as a typical endwall. Only those parts which
are unique for this partition wall will be presented. These include: length of girt G-62, length of
corner column PC-11, length of interior column PC-12, partition rafter layout & length for
rafter option 3 with 'D' orientation.
C1. LENGTH OF GIRT G-1
The girt connects to hot-rolled partition column on the right and the 'O' partition column on the
left. Detailing methods and parameters are shown below.

members being connected and the parameters required for calculating the distances to holes
and bends. Clips required for partition 1 are b2, c3, f1,and f4.
B5. ANGLES
Angles for partition walls can include base angle or channel, angle at the top of the partition
panel, and inside or outside corners. All angle items are shown and calculated on PART1_FO.
B6. TRIM
Trim is furnished at areas that may have a sharp panel edge. These areas include corners,
jambs, headers, base of panels, top of panels. The trims are specified using markers in the
DT_TRIM.SIZ file. Refer to P.E. 9-00-4 for available markers for the DT_TRIM.SIZ file. All
trim items are shown and calculated on PART1_SO.
B7. MASTIC, SEALANT, AND DIAGONAL BRACING
These are not available on partitions. Bracing is not included in partitions, and there are not any
partition markers added to the DT_MASTC.SIZ file.

wall 1.
B9. BOLTS AND SCREWS
The bolts and screws are separately calculated on two different drawings. The framing view,
PART1_FO, is shown for each calculation. The fastener.out file can be used for checking,
since each partition wall is shown separately for bolt and screw quantities.
C. PARTITION WALL 2 PART2_FS
Partition 2 is a longitudinal partition that includes rigid frame interior columns as partition
columns. The top of column are connected to an added rafter, with rafter option 2 and rotation
'R' for open side to the right. There is a 20'-0" high partial wall in the fourth bay. Girt heights
are 7'-4", 12'-0", and 17'-0". The program will add top girts for panels that do not extend to the
roof line. The panel height is entered as 0'-0" to represent full height with 'B' top of purlin for
left side panels extending to the bottom of purlin. The panel height specified is 18'-0" for the
right side. Colors for panels and trim are 'P2' for the left and 'P8' for the right. This partition
starts at the left endwall, intersects partition 3 at a rigid frame column, intersects partition 6
and 4, and ends at partition 5.
C1. COLUMNS AND RAFTERS
Members listed in this paragraph have shop drawings with sketches showing calculations. The
first column is an 'O' column with mark PC-2 and a 'C' rafter above with mark PR-3. The next
2 columns are rigid frame interior columns with no added rafter above. The next column is a
'C' column in partition 6. The fifth column is a 'C' column with mark PC-3 that attaches to the
underside of a rigid frame with no added rafter. The sixth column is a set of two columns with
mark PC-4 with one occuring on each side of the intersecting partition girts. The seventh and
eighth column are 'C' columns that attach to the underside of a rigid frame with no added
rafters. The last column is an 'O' column that attaches to the rafter from the intersecting
partition. The columns are labeled on the framing view, see PART2_FO.
C2. SECONDARY FRAMING
The secondary framing is similar to partition wall 1. The only difference is the end deducts
may vary depending on the column shape and rotation. Calculations are not included for this
wall.
C3. PANELS
Partition 2 has an 18'-0" top of panel height on the front sidewall side of the wall, and a full
height on the back side of the wall. The full height panels extend to the bottom of purlins as
specified by the 'B' top of panel value. Calculations are not shown since the lengths are the
same as partition wall 1.
C4. CLIPS
Loose clips for partition 2 are shown on PART2_FO. The clip shop drawings show the
members being connected and the parameters required for calculating the distances to holes

base plate for all the columns along the partition wall.
RAFTER SET DEPTH, (in, mm):
The desired depth for the rafters. If the program is to determine the rafter depth, set
to 0.
RAFTER TYPE:
Available partition wall rafters are:
'O' = cold formed Open Channel sections and
'C' = C sections
RAFTER ORIENT:
There are 3 directions available for the rafter. These are shown on reference
drawing PT1. Orientation is used to specify the open face direction of the C or O
section.
'L' is for left orientation, which is open toward the left endwall.
'R' is for right orientation, which is open toward the right endwall. Both 'L' and 'R'
are oriented with the rafter web vertical.
'D' for the downward direction for the open face of the C or O section, and the
web is horizontal.
RAFTER OPTION:
There are 3 rafter options available. These are shown on reference drawing PT1.
1 is for rafters at top of columns only, and the rafters are between the adjacent
purlins at the top of the column.
2 is for rafters at top of columns only, and the rafters are to the underside of the
adjacent purlins at the top of columns.
3 is for a continuous rafter the full length of the partition. The rafter attaches to
the underside of all purlins.
(58) PARTITION WALL PARTIAL WALLS:

The number for the partition wall, that is the label for the partition wall.
WALL HEIGHT, (ft, mm):
The vertical distance from the floor line to the top of the partition panel. For full height
panels to extend to roofline, use 0.00 and respond to the remaining questions in this
section.
TOP OF PANEL:
'T' if the panels extend to the top of the roof purlins,
'B' if the roof panels are to extend to the bottom of the roof purlins. This affects panel
length for both the longitudinal and transverse partition walls.
PANEL PART NAME:
The panel part name as designated in the DS_PANEL.SIZ file.
PANEL COLOR:
The first two letters of this four-letter code represents the color of the panel. The
second two letters represents the style for the panel (not used).
SCREW TYPE:
The first letter of this three-letter code represents the color of length of screw: 'S' for
short, 'M' for medium, or 'L' for long. The second and third letters represent the
screw finish as designated in the DT_SCRW1.SIZ file.
TRIM COLOR; CORNER, JAMB, TOP, BASE:
This is a 4-letter entry. The first two letters come from the DT_COLOR file and
represent the color of the trim. The second 2 letters come from the DT_TRIM file

BASE OPTIONS, CHANNEL:
'Y' to have a base channel along the length of the partition. The channel selected will
match the depth of wall girt.
BASE OPTIONS, BASE SEAL:
'Y' if the base seal (base trim) is to be included. The seal can be used with both the
base angle and base channel.
BASE OPTIONS, ANGLE/SEAL:
'Y' to use a special angle which serves as both the base angle and base seal.
(64) COLUMN INFORMATION FOR INTERSECTION OF TWO CONTINUOUS
PARTITIONS:
QUANTITY:
The quantity of intersections of two continuous walls requiring information. This
information is required for design of girts and columns.
FIRST/SECOND PARTITION:
Information about which two continuous intersecting walls that are being defined. For
the wall containing the column, define the column type and location. The other wall
should not contain information, that is, '-' for type and location.
PARTITION ID:
The number for the partition wall, that is the label for the partition wall.
COLUMN TYPE:
Available partition wall columns are:
O cold formed Open Channel sections,
C C-sections,
D double cold-formed C-sections,
R hot-rolled wide flange section,
W welded wide flange sections, and
U hot rolled channel sections.
TIE-IN OPTION:
The column option can be '-', '1', '2', '3', or '4'. See drawing PT20 for reference.
'-' = No column is present and tie-in option is not used.
'0' or '1' = Column is not attached to other wall and location is not adjusted.
'2' = Column is not attached to other wall and location is adjusted.
'3' = Column is attached to other wall and location is not adjusted.
'4' = Column is attached to other wall and location is adjusted.
