Digital Archive Project
History
As emerging scholars, you use digital spaces to access information
daily. As you research, you form your own unique perspective as you
analyze this information. When you compose, you must think of ways
to present your topic, angle, and purpose to your audience. In this
assignment, you will need to consider how to make your research
accessible as well as usable to a community of scholars like yourself
through the creation of a digital archive.
Create a Digital Archive: For this project, you will work in pairs on
a research project of your choosing over some aspect of Purdues
history. You may choose to focus on a specific person (Neil
Armstrong, Amelia Earhart, France Cordova, etc), a building
(Weatherill, Heavilon, Stanley Coulter, etc), a department (English,
Chemistry, Electrical Engineering), a myth or local legend, or even
sports. Be creative and pick an aspect of Purdue that interests your
whole group. If you have an idea but it isnt listed in the prompt,
meet with me and I will let you know if it is appropriate.
With the information you gather, you will create a digital archive to
tell the story of your research. You will be using any free website
builder you like to create (we will be doing a tutorial over Wix and
Weebly in class) and exhibit your research. Since this is a digital
archive, you will need to have photos, videos, audio, and any other
sources you can put together to make your archive dynamic as well as
accessible. In general, your archive needs to be as interactive as
possible.
Gather Sources: For this project, you will need to have 5+ sources.
They can be print, online, or empirical sources(although you may use
only 1 empirical source towards the requirement). We will be using
MLA citation. You will need to create an annotated bibliography that
will be due two weeks before the final project. I will discuss this in
class and give you an additional assignment sheet. This annotated
bibliography will also need to be incorporated into your website.
Write a Reflection: In addition to the website and other multimedia
you create, your group will turn in a 2-3 page extended reflection on
this project. This reflection needs to be an in-depth exploration of
your project. You should include background information about your
topic, the purpose of your archive, your approach to design, how you
structured and organized your site, how you used logos, pathos, and
ethos to inform your audience, how you created access to your
information, etc. You may also want to discuss aspects of the
rhetorical situation and how that affected your final project.
Present your Project: Your group will present your final project to
the rest of the class. You will need to prepare a short presentation (10
minutes) to discuss your topic as well as your vision of the project.
