PROBLEM STATEMENT
To develop and design a safe, comfortable, light and low cost multi-purpose
wheel-chair for the differently abled persons.

ABSTRACT

The general consensus among society is that being born disabled is an affliction
often associated with unhappiness, failure, dependency on others and
helplessness. People often look at those with disabilities and think to
themselves, what misery they must be in. But is that always true? Are those
who are afflicted with physical disabilities really less capable than the rest of
so-called normal society? Off-course not.
So it becomes imperative for us to make paraplegic people self-sufficient and
contribute to them. The person who cant walk by his own can suffer from
obesity because of his sedentary life. So the idea is convert this life to the
prolific one. Cant we develop something so as to make him earn a good-living
by utilizing his instinct and hands co-ordination together to accomplish a useful
task a daily chore or a service.
We can rebuild his Wheel Chair to a Earning machine by engaging it with a
grinder, low cost juice machine or can be anything. Here comes your ideas !!

THEME

Design a multi-purpose wheel chair which considers the ergonomics and persons
comfort. The idea should be new and should not be directly copied from existing
machines.
It must be light weight, safe and should require least effort. Reduce it as much as
possible by taking mechanical advantage as much as possible.
The person finds it difficult to stand while riding on this chair, so a mechanism can
be designed to support his torso. Also when he/she wish to get up from the bed,
he faces a lot of difficulty.
An exercising mechanism can be employed to it for the person to work-out
without going to gym. The ExerCycle are most common machines whose driving
mechanism if modified for disabled person can serve the purpose. The paddles can
be replaced by the wheels. Moreover a mechanism can be devised so as to move
the chair while doing work-out.
Electric motors can also be used for driving mechanisms.
You will find some reference videos in the links at the end of document, describing
the problems and ways to combat it.
The teams are free to use any mechanism for propulsion or any added utility.

Apart from above mentioned things, the running mechanism of chair if

disengaged from wheels, can be used to power a sewing machine, juicer or a
grinder. The teams are free to look at any angle.
The teams are required to prepare only a CADD Model of the Chair and the
running mechanism, on the basis of which they will be awarded marks. If
possible you can show the mechanisms by Kinematic Simulation on CADD
Softwares or with the help of some videos.
NOTE: If in case, its not possible to develop CADD Models , you can put
drawings to support your idea. The objective is to make the participants think
openly and come up with new ideas which can be developed in future. The
teams work will be evaluated on the basis of innovation, feasibility of ideas
and research they have done on topic.

JUDGING CRITERIA:
The teams will be judged on the originality of work, feasibility of applications
and the correct understanding of the problem statement.
