The 370-E has the D.C. motor placed behind the drawworks,
connected to the input shaft by a chain drive. The 370 mechanical
drawworks takes its input from a diesel engine drive, which can be
mounted on the extended frame of the drawworks to make a single
package. Two transmission ratios and one drum drive result in two
speeds for hoisting and rotary drive.

Drawworks
National Oilwell offers four basic drawworks concepts from its Dreco
line which provide some of the most advanced drawworks in the
industry:
AC ELECTRIC DRAWWORKS
AC electric drawworks offer a unique compact three shaft design
ideal for offshore applications where space and weight are of
primary importance. Since AC electric motors have wider speed
range it is possible to eliminate one gear ratio from the drawworks
without decreasing the overall performance of the machine. Primary
and dynamic braking is provided by the AC electric motors thus
eliminating the need for an auxiliary brake. The regenerated power
is pumped back into the main power supply increasing the overall
rig efficiency.
SMALL FOOTPRINT
With less transmission parts and no auxiliary brake, the footprints
and weights of these drawworks are reduced by up to 30% when
compared to a conventional drawworks. Fail safe spring applied
disc brakes are utilized for parking and emergency only.
PSD DRAWWORKS
Power Shift Drive drawworks utilize a diesel engine and an Allison
automatic transmission to provide smooth mechanical power to the
drawworks. The drawworks package is small, light and easily adaptable to most small rig packages. All these drawworks are available
with mechanical catheads, sand reels, hydromatic brakes and
torque tube rotary drives. As another option, these drawworks can
be provided with a two speed chain transmission and a DC electric
drive.

FASTER SPEEDS
With the larger diameter drum, increased hoisting capacity and the
enhanced controls, this drawworks will improve operational performance. It will allow for faster tripping, running of risers and setting of
the BOP.

THE DISCS.
The system uses two hardfaced discs machined from alloy steel
with an internal water jacket.
Disc thickness is three inches. Disc diameter is normally four to five
inches greater than the band brake rim.
Both braking surfaces on each disc are hardfaced with a weld overlay.
THE HYDRAULICS.
The hydraulic power unit consists of:
valves.
sensitive environments.

UNIQUE CALIPERS.
THE MAIN SERVICE CALIPER ASSEMBLY.
Depending on the size of the drawworks, there are four to six
service brake calipers.
The cylinders are designed to operate at maximum system pressure however, the normal operating pressure is much less.
However, in the event of complete loss of hydraulic pressure, electrical failure, or by operation of a manual
valve, the springs extend and set the brake.
Not only do they act when pressure is lost unexpectedly, but they
may also serve as a parking brake when the rig is idle for extended
periods or while undergoing maintenance.
A crown protection device can be installed in the system, which
when tripped, activates the calipers.
21
ADDITIONAL BACK-UP.
The air-operated back-up hydraulic pump supplies hydraulic fluid at
approximately the maximum system pressure to operate the brake
in the unlikely event of a primary pump failure.
ACCURATE CONTROL.
The driller can control the main service brakes to a fine degree.
Sensitive operations are accomplished with ease.
The automatic drilling system is designed to relieve the burden of constant actuation of the
controls by the driller.
SYSTEM COMPATIBLE.
The National Oilwell electronic remote control package can interface with other rig floor systems to provide a reliable, safe and integrated system. With the installation of the National Oilwell electronic
drawworks controls, the driller can be assured the operation of the
drawworks is performing to the safe design limits and capabilities of
the equipment.
TOTAL PACKAGE.
With the addition of the Energy Monitor and Autodriller System a
complete package which provides not only operator interface, but
additional safety features to maintain safe and reliable operation in
harsh environments.
AN IMPORTANT OPTION.
To take full advantage of the benefits afforded by the Universal Disc
Brake System, National Oilwell offers an integrated PLC based
Energy Monitor and Autodriller System. This system ensures that
the maximum kinetic energy of the traveling equipment is not
exceeded, while monitoring the position of the traveling equipment
within preset limits of travel. It also provides precise control of bit
weight when drilling.
22
WIRELINE ANCHORS.
National Oilwell offers a complete line of wireline anchors to meet
every need. These field proven anchors are offered in a variety of
arrangements from mast leg mounted to floor mounted. Sizes can
match the single line pull rating of virtually any drawworks. Material
traceability and models built to API-8C are also available.
Special five wrap drums available for plastic coated wire rope on
models 100 and 150.

Below: Casing and tripping loads are carried separately from drilling
loads. They do not pass through the swivel stem, swivel bearing, or
API rotary shouldered connections. The Dual Load Path isolates
the main swivel bearing and stem from the high stresses, impact
loading, and fatigue that are associated with tripping and casing
handling activity.
All current design models have the following basic design features.
Features of specific models are found on page 27.

Power Swivels
NATIONAL OILWELL POWER SWIVEL ADVANTAGES:
IBOP ASSEMBLY.
PIPE-HANDLING ASSEMBLY.
Below: The four-position link kick-out allows for retracting elevators
while drilling. The handling ring assembly rotates a full 360 degrees
continuously and is lockable.
MOTOR MOUNTING.
The DC or AC drive motor is foot mounted above the washpipe and
mud lines, driving through a shaft with crown-tooth couplings. This
greatly reduces sensitivity to alignment, and isolates motor shaft
and bearing from over-hung loads.

Traveling Blocks
National Oilwell traveling equipment is available in a broad range of
models and sizes, to meet any rating or specific application. New
designs for direct couple to top drives and for motion compensating
drawworks have been developed to enhanced performance and
operability.
They are rated in accordance with the API yield strength method.
Proper, precise weighting ensures fast free-fall.
Streamlined, compact design means there is no interference
with mast or derrick components.
Metallurgy of sheaves, hooks, and other components are carefully matched to provide long, trouble-free service.

SHEAVES
All National Oilwell sheaves feature our unique Bearing Retention
System, a simple but effective method of preventing a sheave from
walking off the bearing. The system consists of snap rings which
are inserted into grooves machined into the bore of the sheave, one
on each side of the bearing cup. A thinner version of a standard
seal completes the system.
API #8C.
DnV approved for UKDOE, NMD and NPD requirements.
Fabricated from top quality materials.
Full penetration welds at hubs.
Rims compression fit to webs before welding.
All welds fully inspected.
Stress relieved after welding.
Grooves hardened to Rockwell C35.
National Oilwell bearing retention system.
Three coat epoxy paint system.
Common sizes stocked.

Swivels
SWIVELS FOR EVERY REQUIREMENT.
Choose from a full dozen swivel models with static load ratings for
140 to 750 tons. Several models are specifically designed for
severe drilling conditions and high mud pressures.
Swivel models are available for use with top drive units as well as
models that meet API 8C PSL-1 or API 8A specifications.
Pressure rating to 7500 psi.
The P-750 is rated for 7500 psi with a 4 inch washpipe opening as
standard.
Available for P-500 and P-650 is a high pressure gooseneck
arrangement which can upgrade from 5000 psi to 7500 psi.
National Oilwell provides parts for the following brands of swivels:

CERAMIC PLUNGERS
Choose Fluid King ceramic plungers for fluid environments that are
both corrosive and abrasive such as saltwater or chemical service.
Every application has its own unique set of factors which determine
the need for specific designs or materials. Whether your application
is exotic or general service, the correct packing should be chosen
with as much care as other fluid end expendable parts.
TUNGSTEN-CARBIDE PLUNGERS
For greatly extended wear life and corrosion resistance, or for
strength and durability at high temperatures and pressures select a
Fluid King Tungsten-Carbide plunger. Fluid King Tungsten-Carbide
plungers are available in either standard or premium TungstenCarbide coating. The Fluid King Premium Tungsten-Carbide
plungers offer additional durability in extreme conditions or when
used in combination with certain braided style packing arrangements.
Fluid King can assist you in selecting the packing from a broad
range of styles and arrangements that will best suit your pumping
requirements.

Without the restrictions found in many standard valves, the full bore
design helps to reduce the net positive suction head required by a
pump, and in many cases can reduce the possibility of pump
cavition caused by poor suction conditions.
The Nitronic 50 Stainless Steel valve and seat and Inconel spring
material help in prolonging valve life by offering superior corrosion
resistance in harsh fluid environments.

MOBILE RIGS
National Oilwell Mobile Trailer and Self-Propelled rigs are used for
all typical drilling, workover and well repair/service applications. To
fit this variety of applications, National Oilwell manufactures a full
range of rig capacities including 40, 44, 66, 88, 110, 138, 150, 165,
187 and 198 ton units. The drawworks, carrier and mast capacities
are matched to provide optimum performances. These rigs are
available with wheel combinations to suit customer and terrain
conditions.
Heaters for the engine, hydraulic oil and work areas are available
as options.
Rigs are designed in accordance with the applicable local standards, in addition to the American Petroleum Institute and
American Institute of Steel Construction Requirements.
Kremco K750
54
Mobile Rigs
Many of these rigs are equipped with heavy duty hydraulic systems
capable of providing power for hydraulic pipe tongs, tubing and
sucker rod tongs, hydraulic rotary tables, hydraulic hand tools and
hydraulic swivels. The hydraulic pump is driven from a power take off
on top of transmission rather than the more common method of
mounting the pump below the engine using a belt drive. This design
protects the pump from dirt and grime during rig transportation and
permits easy maintenance.
The Kremco line of masts, both stiff and telescoping, are manufactured from high strength cold drawn seamless square steel tubing.
Square tubing ensures maximum load carrying capacity and torsional
stiffness while minimizing mast weight. Square tubing also facilitates
easy field replacement of damaged mast members.
The Wilson line of mast are manufactured from high strenght low alloy
angle iron for design capacity and ease of repair or replacement.

SLANTHOLE SERVICING RIG
The slant-hole service rig design emphasizes reduced rig-up time
and a capability to function equally well in a vertical position.
The rig incorporates forward and backward, as well as side to side
adjustment to ensure proper mast alignment. Through the use of
hydraulics, the mast can be positioned perfectly over the wellbore at
whatever angle is required.
In the conventional mode, the mast rests on the back of the carrier
in the vertical mode giving stability and improved wellhead
clearance.

Our Dreco line of derricks and masts, as well as complete rigs can
be furnished to meet requirements of regulatory groups including
ABS, DNV, Lloyds and the Dutch Staatstoezicht. Material
traceability, data books, quality assurance programs, etc. are
available to meet the most stringent requirements.
National Oilwell engineers are familiar with special design
requirements imposed by automatic pipe and subsea B.O.P.
handling systems, motion compensating devices and riser
tensioning systems.
These engineers have developed a variety of rig mechanization
components and systems, such as complete rig skidding that
facilitates movement from a centrally located remote control
station. These components are integrated in the complete drilling
module to minimize weight while improving operator safety.
Packages utilize a modular design concept that allows assembly
using the platform cranes which substantially reduces the risk
and cost during installation. The modular concept can also be
designed to facilitate a one-piece single lift of the assembled
modules onto the platform in the event a heavy lift crane is
available.

The Horizontal Pipe Shuttle transfers drill pipe, collars and casing
between the pipe deck and the drill floor, and is especially suited
for applications with major elevations between the pipe deck and
the drill floor.
The machine consists of a horizontally slanted section, with a trolley running on top. The trolley is equipped with a pushing device in
the rear end, and a set of hydraulic operated support arms in the
front section to secure the pipe in the trolley.
When fed with pipe on the pipe deck, the trolley climbs the slanted
section, and with the pushing device, the pipe is delivered to the
elevator pick-up position. All sections of this pipe shuttle are made
for harsh marine environmental and operational conditions.

ERGONOMICS
The Drillers Cabin design reduces stress on the operators. The
flexibility of the operators chairs, line-of-sight, noise level and
optimal positioning of control and monitoring devices, minimizes
the risk of long term physical stains of personnel. The same
elements improves communication between operating personnel,
while providing an efficient control and monitoring environment.

CUSTOM REQUIREMENTS.
A National Oilwell Field Service Engineer changes parameters on a Ross Hill SCR Drive
equipped with Digital Control Modules.
83
DIGITAL MODULES.
Ross Hill Plug and Play Digital Engine Generator (AC) and SCR
(DC) Control Modules are a direct replacement for the existing
analog AC and DC modules with all the advantages digital has to
offer.
For example:
The system monitors the shaft angle of the mud pump to track
piston position. The controller, in turn, adjusts the SCR throttles to
synchronize the pump pistons.
DRILLERS CONSOLES.
The Ross Hill Power Limit Controller has become one of our most
popular retrofit features for operating SCR systems. The unit is
equipped with the standard KW and IT power limit circuits but
allows for adjustment of both KW and IT. Each function can be
changed independent of the other. The range of adjustment allows
the power limit to be lowered to 80% and increased to 110%. The
controller has an under frequency power limit feature which keeps
the rig operating when sudden engine problems or a load of bad
fuel would normally cause a rig shutdown. This unit is a pin for pin
replacement for the standard power limit board.
The Ross Hill PLC-based Drillers Console utilizes a small communication cable to communicate from the Drillers Console to the
SCR Power Control House, thus eliminating cabling and installation
material.

MAGNACHROME, MAGNUM XL AND
SANDMASTER PUMPS.
THE OPERATING RANGE OF THE MAGNUM FAMILY IS:
25 GPM TO 7,500 GPM
HEADS: 20 TO 1500 FT
Magnum offers the right pump for the application. The Magnum
family of pumps offer optimum pressures and slurry handling
capacities at low operating speeds.
The extra thickness built into the Magnum reduces the effect of
wear and cavitation on fluid end components. The wide full open
impeller design allows for maximum solid handling capability while
minimizing bearing thrust loads.
Magnum I Pump
The Magnum large shaft design allows for pumping of high Specific
Gravity fluids and continuous duty belt drive applications.
The Magnum Casings are concentric design to minimize the wear
areas at the discharge of the pump and minimize fluid turbulence
enhancing the performance of downstream equipment.
The Magnum XL design has a built in front and rear wear plate
allowing the user to have a highly abrasion resistant replaceable
surface on the impeller and companion components. This reduces
pump cost for highly abrasive applications.

Manufacturing
All Griffith Vector Drilling Jars (with the exception of slim hole 3 1/2
O.D. and smaller) feature our Mechanical Safety latch mechanism.
The mechanical latch firmly holds the mandrel in the neutral position in
relation to the jar body, preventing any unexpected jarring while making
connections, tripping in or out of hole, or when tagging bottom. The
latch is preset to release when either a tensile or compressive force is
applied to the jar which exceeds the forces seen during normal drilling
operations.

Hydraulic Mechanical
Drilling Jars
GRIFFITH VECTOR HYDRAULIC
MECHANICAL DRILLING JARS
This drilling jar is well suited for virtually all drilling operations. The jar
was developed to overcome the usual shortcomings associated with
purely hydraulic or mechanical jars, yet retain the advantages of both
concepts. This jar combines our mechanical safety latch with a
hydraulic delay sequence on the up jarring stroke. The down jarring
stroke is achieved mechanically. To jar upward, overpull is applied to
the drill string until the preset mechanical latch setting is overcome and
the jar enters the hydraulic delay sequence. The desired overpull
above free string weight is then taken as the jar continues to slowly
open under hydraulic restriction (delay) with the drawworks brake
applied. After the hydraulic delay, the jar enters the free stroke and the
mandrel accelerates to the fully extended position creating a jarring
impact. Simply lowering the drill string resets the latch. The jar is then
ready for another jarring cycle or to resume normal drilling operations.
To jar down, the drill string is lowered until the compressive force
applied to the jar exceeds the preset mechanical latch setting. The
latch releases allowing the mandrel to accelerate to the fully closed
position creating a downward jarring impact. Raising the drill string
until free movement stops indicates the latch has reset. The jar is
ready for another jarring cycle or to resume normal drilling operations.
Less restricted jar placement in the BHA. The jar can be placed

Double-Acting
Hydraulic Mechanical Drilling Jars
GRIFFITH VECTOR DOUBLE-ACTING
HYDRAULIC MECHANICAL DRILLING JARS
This jar combines the latch with hydraulic delay in both directions.
All features of the Hydraulic Mechanical Jar are available with this tool,
and operation of the tool is similar, but the hydraulic jar down requires a
slight change of procedure.
To jar downward, apply a compression load to the jar in excess
of the down-latch setting. This will release the mechanical latch and
initiate the hydraulic delay sequence. Following the delay period, the
jar will release, causing a downward jarring impact. Raising the drill
string will re-engage the mechanical latch ready for further jarring, or
to resume normal drilling as required.

Shock Tools
The Griffith Vector Shock Tool is designed to isolate the drill string from
axial deflections produced by the bit during drilling operations. This reduces
impact on the bit and drill string and increases penetration rates by keeping
the bit on bottom during rough drilling conditions.
FEATURES
Will not build angle, as it is well stabilized between barrel and
mandrel.

STANDARD EQUIPMENT:
The Griffith Vector Portable Service Center is a completely self contained drilling tool service shop designed for use in remote locations.
The units are available in a single width using the Griffith Vector
Mini Torque, or in double or triple width using the Griffith Vector
Torquemaster. All units are skid mounted structures, complete with
integral floor sumps, overhead crane rails, ISO container mounts/lift
points at the corners, insulated and sheeted walls and roof, full height
doors, and hinged/removable side panels as necessary. They require
an external power source (specified by the customer) only, as all units
are complete with a breaker panel and circuits for major equipment and
accessories.

TORQUE
The torque is produced by two hydraulic cylinders which rotate the
tailstock chuck through a 30 degree arc. Breakout torque is greater
than make-up torque at the same operating pressure due to the
differential areas of the rod and head sides of the pistons.
The Torquemaster requires no anchors or special mounting facilities
since the torsional reactions are resisted by the base frame.

HIGH TORQUE DRILLING DISCONNECT
The High Torque Disconnect uses a unique mechanism which eliminates the usual torque
dogs seen in most other disconnect assemblies. The disconnect was designed to withstand the vibration and torsional loading commonly associated with the use of downhole
motors and hammers, without disconnecting prematurely due to wear. The disconnect is
drop ball activated and incorporates a standard internal profile to facilitate retrieval of the
fish with the Specialty Tools Hydraulic Release Internal Pulling Tool. The tool is available
with customer specified connections.

The Hydraulic Bow Spring Centralizer utilizes hydraulically expandable bow springs. In a static condition, the bow springs remain in
the retracted state, flush with the tools O.D. Circulating differential
pressure across the tool expands the bow springs to contact the
side wall of the well bore. Being hydraulically activated allows the
tool to generate sufficient force in deviated or horizontal well bores
to lift the tool string off the side wall, centering it in the well bore.
The tool is ideally suited to be utilized as a stabilizer with a downhole motor.
