About GNRC :

GNRC (formerly known as Guwahati Neurological Research Centre), is the


first super specialty healthcare centre in North East India.[1] It was
established in 1987 by neurologist Dr. Nomal Chandra Borah.
For more than two decades, GNRC Dispur has treated more than half a
million patients from Assam, otherNorth Eastern states and neighboring
countries like Bhutan, Nepal and Bangladesh.
At the genesis of GNRC, a will to make a difference in the lives of the
distressed, ailing people of Northeastern region of India ignited a noble
vision. The vision was so focused and powerful that it transformed the
Healthcare landscape in this part of the country.
Powered by the impassioned dedication of Dr. Nomal Chandra Borah and the
professionalism and selfless support of myriad stakeholders, Guwahati
Neurological Research Centre (GNRC) was incorporated in 1985 as the first
ever super specialty health care centre in this part of the globe.
From a humble beginning, GNRC has taken colossal strides ignoring the
hostile environment and emerged as a dependable and admired Health care
center extending its services to the people of Assam, the other states of
North East India and the neighboring south East Asian countries of Nepal,
Bhutan, Bangladesh and Myanmar, who lack super specialty, tertiary
healthcare facilities. Today, quality is the buzzword at GNRC and offering the
best value to the visiting patients to build their unflinching trust on brand
GNRC is at the core of health institutions DNA.
At GNRC, flawless round the clock patient care is ensured by a dedicated
team of 100 Doctors, 300 Nurses and 1000 employees. Presently GNRC has
200 beds including 110 ICU beds. Every action of the Hospital is steered
towards making quality healthcare available and affordable.
Along with diagnostic and therapeutic function, GNRC also organises
academic programmes like annual lectures and regular research
programmes so that its team always remain updated with latest

developments across the world and thus can pass on the benefits to the
people in need.

Global level, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has also
accredited this centre for Medical Research under ICMR since the year 2002.
It is also a recognised research centre under the Department of Science and
Technology, Government of India. This centre has also been supported by
WHO for a medical library.

GNRC Milestones

1984: Guwahati Neurological Research Centre, The First Neurology

Clinic in North East India was set up at Maligaon in the outskirts of


Guwahati, with EEG and Lab services.
17th October, 1985: Guwahati Neurological Research Centre was

converted into a Private Limited Company.


5th January, 1987: The First Hospital under Guwahati Neurological

Research Centre Private Ltd was opened to the public at Dispur.


9th February, 1987: GNRC installed the first CT Scan machine (Hitachi-

CTW 400) in the entire North Eastern region of India.


1989: GNRC Hospitals conducted the First Micro Neurosurgery in North
East India.

1992: EMG Lab was set up.


1992: The first ICU of the Northeast India was set up at GNRC with

eight beds and in the same year GNRC Hospital successfully conducted
the First Stereotactic Surgery of the Region.
19th April, 1994: Guwahati Neurological Research Centre Private Ltd

became Guwahati Neurological Research Centre Ltd.


21st July, 1994: The ICU of Institute of Neurological Sciences was

inaugurated by Honorable Late Hiteswar Saikia.


April, 1995: First MRI machine (Siemens 1 Tesla) of the Northeast India

became functional.
1997: Coronary Care Unit launched and Cardiology services started.
10th January, 1998: GNRC Heart Institute was inaugurated by Honorable

Governor of Assam,Lieutenant General S.K. Sinha.


25th April, 1999: Cardiovascular Surgery Unit and Fisrt Cathlab of North

East India was established at GNRC hospital.


1999: DSA Procedure started.
2000: First Open Heart Surgery was successfully carried out.
2000: Critical Care services were started.
2001: Joint Replacement surgery was started.
19th January, 2001: The Guwahati Neurological Research Centre Private

Ltd was registered as GNRC Ltd.


5th January, 2003: Free Ward facilities started.
26th June, 2003: GNRC was accredited with ISO 9001: 2000.
4th January, 2004: Regional Stroke Centre launched.
5th July, 2004: Asian Institute of Nursing Education was established;

affiliated to SNDT Womens University, Mumbai.


25th August, 2004: GNRC Medishop was established.
24th August, 2005: GNRC was accredited with ISO 14001: 2004.
19th January, 2006: The Life First Ambulance, the first Cardiac

Ambulance with all life support facilities in North East India was launched.
13th October, 2006: GNRC Epilepsy Clinic, the first dedicated Epilepsy

clinic of North East India was launched.


10th September, 2007: GNRC Swasthya Magazine was launched.
4th February, 2008: The Second Hospital under GNRC Ltd was opened

to the public at Sixmile.


11th January, 2011: GNRC Assure launched.
19th January, 2011: Comprehensive Epilepsy Care Centre launched.

17th December, 2011: GNRC Pain Clinic inaugurated.


5th January, 2012: GNRC Completes 25 years of its service to the

people.
21st March, 2012: GNRC medireach, a social initiative of GNRC Hospitals

opened for the rural people of Assam.


1st October, 2012: OPD services started in GNRC North Guwahati.
28th January, 2014: GNRC Hospitals signed a Memorandum of

Understanding (MoU) with Singapore General Hospital.


3rd February, 2014: Inpatient services introduced at GNRC Medical,

North Guwahati.
10th May, 2014: GNRC Launches New Scheme for Free Treatment of

Accident and Emergency Patients.


19th June, 2014: GNRC receives an award from India Development

Marketplace, funded by World Bank Group.


17th August, 2014: GNRC signs Memorandum of Understanding with
Pawan Hans for medi-chopper service. On the same day GNRC launched a
mass-awakening programme titled Swasthya Yatra.

Founder:
Chairman and Managing Director of GNRC, Dr. Nomal Chandra Borah is a
neurologist.[3] He received his medical degree from Guwahati Medical College
in 1975 and joined the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New
Delhi as Senior Resident, where he completed three years training
in Neurology, leading to DM degree. In 1984, to address inadequate
availability of quality healthcare in North East India, Dr. Borah decided to
return to Assam and set up a neurology clinic atMaligaon in Guwahati which
was known as Guwahati Neurological Research Centre (GNRC). On October
17, 1985 it was registered as Guwahati Neurological Research Centre
(Private) Limited. In 1987, the first super specialty healthcare centre in
North-East India[1] - Guwahati Neurological Research Centre was established
in Dispur. During this period, Dr Borah was guided by Dr. K V Mathai, wellknown neurosurgeon from Vellore,
who supported Dr. Borah in his
endeavour. Dr. Mathais presence helped Dr. Borah to consolidate the vision
of creating a Centre of Excellence in Neuroscience with the goal of providing
quality patient care, teaching, training and clinical research. In 1994,
Guwahati Neurological Research Centre became a public limited company

and on January 19, 2001, Guwahati Neurological Research Centre was


registered as GNRC Ltd.
Dr. Borah is a member of the Medical Ethics Committee of the Indian Medical
Council (Assam State Branch), Indian Academy of Neurology, Neurological
Society of India, Association of Physicians of India, American Academy of
Neurology, World Federation of Neurology and Indian Stroke Council. Dr.
Borah is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology (FAAN).

ISO: 14001: 2004: ISO 14001: 2004 specifies requirement for an environment
management system to enable an organization to develop and implement a
policy and objective which takes into account legal requirements and other
requirements to which the organization subscribes, and information about
significant environmental aspects.

GNRC Hospitals being a socially responsible organization is a


ISO:14001:2004 certified company which, follows specific protocols for
minimizing and /or eliminating the damage to the environment which
might occur during the day to day work process within the Hospital. We
have also set standards for reduction in power consumption and
optimum utilization of resources to minimize waste.

NABL: National Accrediation Board for Testing and Calibration


Laboratories uses criteria and procedures specifically developed to
determine technical competence. Specialist technical assessors
conduct a thorough evaluation of all factors in a laboratory that affect
the production of test or calibration data. The criteria are based on the
international standards called ISO/IEC 17025 or ISO 15189, which are
used for evaluating laboratories throughout the world.

GNRC Hospitals Laboratory has been found to be following


international standards for various processes and thus has been
awarded the Acccrediation by NABL. GNRC Hospitals assures you that
your laboratorys test or calibration data are accurate and reliable.
