806/807 STEM Detector Install Guide

(GMS 2.1 onwards)

Before You Start

The InstallSTEMDetectorLibrary.gtk file is no longer used. This may be in your plugins folder if
left from a previous install. Please remove it before starting up DigitalMicrograph.

Adding Detectors

The STEM detectors are inserted and controlled via the STEM Detector Control Palette
(Window>Floating Windows>STEM Detector Control) :

To install or calibrate STEM detectors, you need to enter service mode (Help>User
Mode>Service, enter service password).

This will add an InstallSTEMDetector menu item. In addition, there will be a STEM Detector
Service palette added to the floating windows (Window>Floating Windows>STEM Detector
Service). Open this palette to add detectors:

Hit the

button to open the device set-up dialog:

To add a device, click Add... and specify the name, COM port and corresponding DigiScan signal

Note that the DigiScan signal field will be disabled for systems with no DigiScan present.

Once done, the detector will appear enabled in the STEM Detector Control Palette:

A second detector can be added for microscopes with more than one STEM detector system:

Detector Calibration

Once detectors have been added, you next need to calibrate them. This is required both
for the measured signal to be calibrated in primary electrons (e-), and also to allow the
auto calibration button to function.

You can calibrate the active device. Note that the STEM Detector Service palette will calibrate
the detector selected in the STEM Detector Control palette. The detector must also be inserted.
Insert a detector, and the calibrate buttons become active:

Note: It is ESSENTIAL that the DigiScan is correctly set-up for each DigiScan signal prior to running
the calibration routines. To do this, perform the following:
o Enter Service mode
o Start a Search view for the DS signal of interest with waveform monitor enabled
o Using the DigiScan Gain and Offset for the selected detector, ensure that
With beam blanked, the waveform monitor is close to the bottom of the
waveform range :

With beam unblanked and sample in FOV, set the detector Gain (%) to a high
enough value to saturated the signal. When saturated, the waveform monitor
should be clipping the max value of the DigiScan intensity range:

Typical values of Gain and offset are 4000 and 1200 respectively. If it is not
possible to get the signal to fill the full DigiScan intensity scale it may be
necessary to change the corresponding signal gain jumper in the DDC to high.

Run through the 3 calibrations one by one following the on-screen prompts. Each detector needs
to be calibrated individually.
o Note that Offset DAC and PMT Offset need to be calibrated once only for each detector
o Note that PMT Gain needs to be calibrated for each detector at each microscope HT.

Once calibrated, the auto button will be enabled and should allow auto-gain to be performed on
a live DigiScan image.
