Echos of the Hebrew Scriptures in Ephesians 2:11-22

Rev. Dr. Michael H. Koplitz

(Eph. 2:14-16 NAU) 14 For He Himself is our peace, who made both groups into one and broke
down the barrier of the dividing wall, 15 by abolishing in His flesh the enmity, which is the Law of
commandments contained in ordinances, so that in Himself He might make the two into one new
man, thus establishing peace, 16 and might reconcile them both in one body to God through the
cross, by it having put to death the enmity.
(Isa 9:6) For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on
His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father,
Prince of Peace.
Looking for the Echos of the Hebrew Scriptures can assist in fully understanding the meaning of
the Scriptures. Here Paul is using an echo of Isaiah 9:6. He starts with the words For He Himself
is our peace. Jesus is the Prince of Peace who was predicted by Isaiah. The Messiah who would
come into the world to usher in peace. The first step of peace was to eliminate the barrier which
stood between the Gentiles and God.
As Paul indicates in this passage a task for Yeshuas was the eliminate of the wall between Jews
and Gentiles. That imagery alone gives rise to how cities were protected in ancient days. Thick
walls surrounded cities with a large city gate. In order to destroy a city the enemy would have to
breech the city walls or destroy the city gate. The most defended area of a city was the gate.
How can one person destroy the thick walls that history created between the Jew and Gentile?
The answer is God Himself in the flesh of Yeshua. The peace Yeshua brought to the world has
caused some pain and suffering by those who reject the notion that Jew and Gentile have become
one in the eyes of God. The Kingdom of God has no outsiders. Todays Christians and Jews need
to come to understand God intends us all to be one.
Looking at the church this division into denominations is 100% against the words of Yeshua. All
denominations are doing is putting walls up inside the Christian community. This fracturing is not
what Yeshua wanted and is destroying the church bit by bit. Even worse is the wall erected
between churches. Walls exist between churches in the same denomination and even in the same
town! If the local churches cannot work together for the good of Yeshua then it is logical that
denominations cannot work together. A sad commentary about how we follow the words of
Yeshua. We need to get back to the Scriptures in a 1st century way and relearn what Yeshua
wants us to do and how Yeshua expects us to live.

(Eph. 2:20 NAU) 20 having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus
Himself being the corner stone,
(Isa 28:16) Therefore thus says the Lord GOD, "Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a tested
stone, A costly cornerstone for the foundation, firmly placed. He who believes in it will not be
disturbed.
Zion is the mountain upon which the Holy Temple was built and Jerusalem which was the capital
of the Kingdom. It is a costly stone because of the history of the Jerusalem. It was taken by King
David from the Jebusites at a cost of human life. Therefore, blood was originally spilled to obtain

Zion so the House of God could be built. Later on Zion would be the place where Yeshua spilt His
blood to bring the peace of God to the Jews and Gentiles. This was a costly cornerstone which
became the foundation of the Kingdom of God on Earth.
Jerusalem has stood the test of time. It was destroyed in 587 BCE by the Babylonians and 70 CE
by the Romans, 135 CE again by the Romans but it was rebuilt each time. Jerusalem will not slip
into the past for it will always exist.
